Nice video, great analysis of the tool. Thanks for taking the time to make it. No fanfare, no background music, just plain, straightforward demo; excellent work.
In the theme of 'go big or go home' I bought the Maxi Trac twin cylinder compressor for just over $100, it aired up my 40s in about 5-6 minutes using a 4 way hose setup.
@@zjty233 I wasn't making a comparison and you didn't need to be insulting, but I guess that's how you like to behave. It can still be had for about the same price as the Harbor Freight compressor, but it would still be a dumb comparison because they have very different beneficial applications.
@@MajorWeakness I loved it, but the advantage only shines if you have at least a 2-way hose, ideally a 4 way like I did. Using it as intended for one tire at a time, the size, weight, and amperage draw make it less desirable than the one you showcased.
I bought this unit to inflate my camping trailer tires. My small Pittsburg just couldn't handle making it to 65 psi. I like the Maddox but my only gripes I have is the proprietary fittings, no pressure control setting and no pressure gauge near the unit. When using the 40' extension, it's basically a 2 man operation, one to read the dial at the wheel and another to turn the unit off. If alone, you could easily overfill to a dangerous level by the time you run 40' to the unit to shut it off. A pistol grip at filling end would be ideal.
I have a 24v Kobalt inflator that is cleverly designed but poorly buil built. This looks like a good but pricey alternative. If I was still doing offroad stuff this would be a must have.
There is nothing like having a beefy, metal and aluminum compressor at the ready for emergencies or to air up after a trail ride. The only thing that would be better would be to have one made of iron and steel. How hot does it get after airing up one tire. My Ridgid cordless gets pretty hot after one tire and I have to let it cool down before I air up the next one.
Did I say Beefy.? the days of Iron and Steel are long gone. The days of Plastic and weakness are here! I'll measure the temperature and let the network know
I got one of these for a friend. I like the pump, but hate the seemingly proprietary hose quick connect. If you are only going to use this for a jeep/car tire, I guess it would be OK. If you are going to fill just about anything else, the tire inflator/gage hose is useless. For example, I could not use it to fill the inside tire of my dually truck. We had 4 golf carts that needed air in all of the tires. The job was painful with this unit because you had to screw on the filler. And by the time you unscrewed it, you let out a few lbs of air. My ARB and Viair made quick work of the small tires. Not because of the volume of air, but because I could use a standard air chuck like the Merlin pistol grip inflator. The ARB and Viair both use standard 1/4" connectors so I can use any inflator that I need to do the job. To fix this, I purchased a cheap ($9) coiled hose at HF and removed the standard 1/4 inch female end. I was able to unscrew the spring that clamps the female connector to the hose. Then I cut the female end off of the proprietary hose, leaving about 5 inches of hose on the proprietary female end. Next I connected the 1/4" female end on the hose that came with the pump. With this setup, I can use a good inflator. The only issue is that the pump will hit the pressure release when you stop the air flow. The ARB and Viar will shut down with the hit max pressure. Back to the cheap hose, I cut the male end off. I connected that to the end 5 inch piece mentioned above. That way, I can still use the proprietary inflator/gage if I want to.
No, It pulls too many amps to be hooked up to a cigarette lighter socket. That would either blow fuses or burn something up. Harbor Freight has a unit that works on a cigarette lighter
Both units are great. I have the Pittsburg 150psi 12V unit, and now I also got the Maddox unit as well (Pittsburg is now going into the family hauler, keeping the Maddox for my personal daily). The only thing I cannot stand are the screw on inflator valves. They're useful maybe if you're filling a completely deflated tire, however if you just want to air up a few PSI they are annoying as all hell. No idea why HF couldn't at least for the Maddox go with a quick connect style for the valve attachment...whether a lever lock, or other style. So god d-mn annoying having to screw that thing on and off. Also forces you to always put a few PSI extra, then come back with a separate gauge and bleed the tire down to exactly what PSI you want. Other than that they work great, and are very reliable. Especially when you can get them on a sale...I think I paid like $98 or $105 for the Maddox with a coupon (don't remember if it was 25% off, or 30%).
@@MajorWeakness Oh man thank you sooo much! This type of adapter is exactly what I've been wanting. I found something similar that Slime Products makes, but it has an extra bit of extension hose, so wasn't ideal. These are great. Thanks!
You need to start it blowing first or it may not start pumping at all, like when you hook it up to an E Range truck tire (80 PSI max.), at close to 70 pounds and you want to add 5 more. My dual cylinder pump, no name brand, made in China, and what isn't these days, bought through WalMart, would not start pumping and so, on my own, figured out that starting it first made all the difference. Re reading the scant single page "poop sheet"; shows to connect the air line first, but letting it run before hook up is best. I also saw metal fillings come off the one I have so I am wondering if it is now broken in or am I set up for preemie failure ? . I read the Maddox manual and like its bounty of info including the parts diagram. I had to add some 14 Ga. stranded wire to the one I have as it would not reach to the back of the Tahoe or the extended cab, full size bed, Chevy pickup. I may have to get a Maddox, for back up, when a sale comes on. Thanks for a spot on presentation. 🤠
To be fair the Maddox is "beefier" as you stated and larger than the Pittsburgh. That would also translates into a larger motor on the pump which would provide more air pumped per volume in the elapsed time given. So not really a fair comparison in my opinion.
That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to use a pistol grip inflator with a digital gauge and it doesn’t work because of the type of quick connect used on the Maddox.
Pittberg runs like it's more rpm & sounds stronger believe it or not. I bought I it last week and for the girlfriend and runs really nice when I got this one it does seem a lot heavier duty and I did buy another bag for it even though I didn't really need to but it does seem like it's more doggy sounding but I think it's just muffled better with the filter because it did fill up the tire faster. Did the Pittsburgh will stay running I like it better because it's a little smaller and lighter and it's just the all-around good compressor this one looks sturdy and heavy duty and it is a little bit heavier and I do like it I hope it works out okay 4:35
I needed a compressor for the sand buddy , kids ATV , and tire inflation duty ! but I hate the hose and air couplers you really can't connect your own hoses or couplers ! So it's going back for a refund ! When I buy something it should be ready to work period ! Very disappointed H.F.
I understand you might suggest that for a quicker air up, but is there any other reason ? I don't always have a valve core driver handy and have never had an issue airing up.
Im a roadside assistance worker .. i got this and im very happy with it
That's cool
How is it holding up since you probably use it more than most casual users?
How does it hold up?
@@robbydiesel9345 I use it every day . It's ok not bad . I would give 4 stars out of 5

I'm in the market for a portable air compressor and this video helped. Thanks!
I actually looked at the one Napa is selling that's getting alot of buzz but I didn't find it to be of any better quality.
Damn that Maddox is pretty impressive.... Its great that you have something to compare it to also..
Yes still working great!

Update i just bought so i need to know 😂
I worked great, sorry for the late reply. It took around 2min to get my tire from 48psi to 60psi where I normally run them. They’re rated for 80psi
That's the same as the Ironman 4x4 compressor I have and it's rated at 5+ CFM as stated by the company

Its a badass lil machine !
Yep
Thank you!
You are welcome
For the same price would you recommend to get Smittybilt 2781 or this Maddox? Are they completely identical?
I think they are very close so whatever is cheaper. HF is easy to go to if something is wrong
Is there any gage to see what the pressure is or you have to buy a separate set? auto shut off?
It comes with gauge. No auto shutoff

They make nitto adapters
Can the power cord be adapted to a cigarette lighter plug? Would prefer avoiding hooking straight to the battery, if possible…..Thanks!

I was just comparing Harbor Freight' s former top of the line to their new top of the line.
I totally agree with you. I demand that the Pittsburgh inflator be issued a ribbon for finishing the comparison. That should make things fair. 🏅
Great video, the maddox didn't need a break-in period?
It didn't say anything about that on the owners manual. Thanks for watching
NAPA air compressors?
No Harbor Freight
You think it’s possible to change out the screw on valve to a quick connect ??
Yes I think so
That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to use a pistol grip inflator with a digital gauge and it doesn’t work because of the type of quick connect used on the Maddox.
Do you think this unit would have enough air blow pressure to blow the dirt and grass of my golf shoes?
Only if you hook up an air tank

Does anyone know what size quick connect it uses? Its not 1/4".
I believe its called a "nitto" connection, they make adapters that will work with the ARB type compressors.

Probably. They all get hot
Hey bud, are the fittings and accessory connections all standard npt or proprietary to the Maddox ? Thanks
Not sure
They are proprietary. You need a nitro adapter if you want to make changes and alterations. Otherwise on its own it does the job.
Does this come with a three prong power plug along with the alligator clips?
No only the battery clips
