  • Warhammer Quest: Cursed City is a cooperative, campaign based, dungeon crawler for 1-4 players that plays over approximately 15 missions, each taking about 2 hours to complete.
    SPOILER TIME STAMPS
    Begin Spoilers: 18:47
    End Spoilers 19:47
"Radukar the Wolf saved the city in its darkest hour, but his benevolence didn’t last. Claiming the Ebon Citadel, he surrounded himself with fiends, lackeys, and fellow creatures of the dark, forming his Thirsting Court. For a time peace reigned. Then came the Shyish Necroquake, and the Wolf found himself infused with dark power.
Sallying forth from his castle, Radukar and his court embarked on a murderous rampage. Some were deemed worthy of the Blood Kiss and were turned into vampires themselves - countless others were left as corpses strewn across the streets. The city now stands on the precipice of total doom. Are there any that would risk their lives and their very souls to save it?"

Very thoughtful and well-presented review; glad I stumbled.on it. Thank you for posting it. I think yours was the first review where someone had played through the entire game.

Glad you enjoyed it. I am hoping the expected expansion this year takes some thoughts and time to make this game as good as it can be, thanks for watching!

Have you seen the massive amount of material Peter Cooper has created to support and expand it? Look for his "The Beast Returns" at BGG. Bonus: if you click through to explore his Google docs, you'll find another expansion in the works, featuring.....well, you like surprises, I hope. Have a great week!

This was the most well reasoned and well explained review of an admittedly schizophrenic game that exhibits both the highs and lows of Games Workshop’s design. Really appreciate your insights. Great review.

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated!
Cursed City hopefully will evolve at the end of this year with an expansion, at least that is my hope!

I also had the feeling that some missions are a cakewalk. What do you think of giving the enemies a Defense roll as well?
    Cheers!

    • @OffTheShelfGameReviews
      @OffTheShelfGameReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Giving the enemies a defense roll I think would cause problems for a few future adventures that would also need to be modified (avoiding spoilers). I honestly think that giving all enemies extra hit points is the aesiest least paperwork fix. I am going to try taking highest level hero divided by 2 round up in additional hit points for every none named enemy might be a really good base start.
      Thanks for watching!

now that the dust has settled I guess you've tried unofficial content expansions and rules changes by Peter Cooper. what did you think of those?

    • @OffTheShelfGameReviews
      @OffTheShelfGameReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I have heard of them but have not tried them out to test them yet.
If the expansion this fall is lackluster I will definitely check out the homebrew, thanks for watching!,

    I just feel like this.
Not every trip into a dungeon needs to test your strategic limits to their max. Lots of people need a game that constantly provides a barely surmountable challenge. I don't need, want, or even enjoy that, personally. Sometimes, just tearing through a bunch of minions for some easy loot or xp is fine. Other times, a challenging boss battle is fine. It shouldn't be all in on one style of play. If you want it different, house-rule it. It's your box of stuff. Change it all you want. But don't cry about how you "have to house-rule it to make it good." You chose to house-rule it to make it different. It was already fine.
The enemies in this game are mostly skeletons and zombies. So, yeah they just kind of rush at you en masse. What else would they do? They are skeletons... and zombies.
Many people seem to judge a game based on what they wanted it to be, or what they think it should be, rather than what it is.
I get that it isn't for everyone. But I haven't really seen any complaints that resonate with me. It's pretty much exactly what I wanted it to be. Now that expansions are confirmed, maybe we will get some more interesting enemies and the game's one arguable weakness will be resolved.

You bring up extremely valid counterpoint and would this be a game called Dungeon Slaughter, using a totally made up 2 seconds ago name, then you would have a wonderful counterpoint that would be worth exploring more.
I think most expected more due to the pedigree of the name alone. Much like any kind of medium you grow to expect some things with certain names.
For example with CMoN I expect a mindless hordes dice chucker, with Gloomhaven I expect a time pressure dungeon crawl where movement is generally a key to victory.
When it comes to Warhammer Quest you expect old world where it was/is common for heroes to die. In the old world 2 Tzangors were enough to kill a party of heroes if luck was against them.
I think that is why challenge level and enemy AI is a strong criticism of the game. People expected more and are taken aback when it doesn't feel like a warhammer game. Look at the prior game in the Warhammer series Blackstone Fortress which comes with storage bags for the heroes as they die, which is a distinct opposition to Cursed City.
Now of course if GW wants a CMoN style loot crawler I would be happy to see their interpretation of the mechanic but it shouldn't be called Warhammer quest unless they heavily advertise it as a loot grind style game.
Thanks for the well thought out feedback and thanks for watching!
PS if it helps I'll add in you expect a truck to be a truck, a sports car to be a sports car and a minivan to get good gas mileage, hold a family of 8 and be full of stuff every soccer mom needs, when it doesn't fall under the standards it's either a new twist on an old idea or its a bad execution. GW didn't mention a new path so us reviewers are puzzled.

@@OffTheShelfGameReviews Brings me back to tempered expectations. I've been playing GW games since 1988. Played almost all of em, many many times. The specialist line and all the normal stuff. And this idea that they only make good, balanced, fully supported games with flawless rulesets is absurd. That has never been the case. The complaints you are making now are the complaints of someone who wants this game to simply be a different game than it is. The guys who made the stuff all what it was back in the day are gone. They don't work there any more. The kids who work there now have mostly destroyed GW. I don't buy almost anything from them any more. No value, most of the time. But Cursed City is fine, and a good value. Not perfect. But nothing is, so that doesn't matter.

@@leadbones on this comment we are about 99% in agreement. As someone who has been enjoying GW since the 80's (check out the video I just uploaded showing an original Advanced Heroquest and original Space hulk) I agree with you that it is sad that the old guard is gone.
I miss the classics and their design choices but even going all the way back to Advanced Heroquest the challenge was always there for the heroes.
I am glad you are enjoying Cursed City it's a great game system but I still disagree with the design of the enemies.
P.s. I do not like CMoN games at all. I have not played one I really felt I enjoyed long term and that does temper my opinions.
Thanks for the even tempered and friendly counterpoints they were enjoyable to discuss and read, thanks again.
