    Opening 2D Animation By:

    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured via the Mega SG/SD.
    2. There was no Japanese Mega CD release of this.
    3. Clockwork Tortoise went tits up after this release in 1996.
    4. While Spencer Nilsen did the score for the animation bits, Burke Trieschman did the music for the gameplay.
    5. This was released even later in Europe, in December of 1995.
    6. Despite its quality, this one still commands north of $50 on the grey market.
    7. Like many Sega CD games, this one is a true exclusive. It has no version on any other gaming platforms.
    8. This was among the last releases for the platform.

It's like the developer were told "People love the SNES game, because it's closer to the cartoon, and they loved the driving sections of Batman Returns. We want you to half-ass both of those ideas."

@@MrSerpico145 I thought the same thing till I smoked (more of a smoker than a drinker) and my bro in law drank... Perfect duo and had total fun. Its all about patterns... But not impossible... But certainly takes a dump on how much they've softened the edges of the gaming experience for us nowadays by a longshot hahahaha
Couldn't even dream to beat even a Contra game till I cracked open a can of booze myself... Something about it just eases the brain and helps w/ focus for someone like me. Lol
But that's only because I have not personally had the time or patience to master it without the 'help'.. Lol.... Growing up and such.. I only use gaming now mostly as means of stress relief.. Instead of an adventure to take on as a goal.. Don't have as much time anymore.. Sadly.
Be responsible. As I'm not obviously trying to influence anybody here.
Because besides: true gamers don't need substances to do what they love most anyways! :)

@@MrSerpico145 i just started playing it on genesis, and it felt unplayable at first, but as with many games from that era, you just have to keep playing and get better, and you'll get a little further each time until you finally beat it.
it may seem a bit tedious now, but that's how they made games last back then. nobody wanted to pay $60 for a game you can beat in one sitting.

The emulators (PicoDrive and GenesisPlus being two of the more common ones) work quite well for Sega CD even on a lower end PC. Sure -- it's not a 100% authentic experience -- but neither would a Sega CD mini provide that given it would likely just run using emulation too.
If you go that route and like Gauntlet-stylw action RPGs, I'm always down for partner in Dungeon Explorer.

It's often surreal to think just what a weird, short lifespan the Mega CD/Sega CD had. I can't remember many retailers or rental stores even stocking anything for this in 1994, let alone 1995.

    • @lazarushernandez5827

In 95 walking in to certain stores you were faced with a Sega section that had Genesis, Sega CD, Game Gear, 32X and Saturn software all around (some places still sold Master System games). Hardware wise you had the Genesis 2, the Sega CD 2 (clam shell), the 32X, the Saturn, then you had the WonderMega (which combined the Genesis and Sega CD in one), the Nomad (portable Genesis), Game Gear, the CD-X (portable Genesis + Sega CD in the form of a Discman) plus attachments to one companies Laser disc...
Sega spread themselves way to thin in this era...

This game is a technical tour de force for the Sega CD but it was just too hard for its own good. A Road Rash game using this engine would have been amazing. A version of Night Striker for the Sega CD or even sequels to Space Harrier, After Burner, and Out Run using this engine would have been a reason to buy the system. Too bad for what never was :(

I experienced similar disappointment initially but stuck with it because I really wanted to love it, and was a huge fan of the animated series. The gameplay did grow on me but it couldn’t touch the first few brilliant driving/combat levels of Batman Returns, however the gameplay did remind me of those end level batski boat through the maze like sewers of Returns that were not my favorite part of that game. I could complete this game, but the batski boat on harder settings required drawing a map of the freaking sewer just to make it through the ridiculous time requirements! 🦇

When I first started actively collecting for the SEGA CD back in the early 2010s this was one of the first games I wanted to play. I grinded my way through this slog of a game and it wasn't satisfying in the slightest even though I thought the cutscenes were fantastic. I didn't enjoy the driving sequences in Batman Returns so to find out this game was entirely driving stages was extremely disappointing because I wanted an upscaled version of what was in the Genesis or SNES versions. Thankfully, there is a cheat code to let you watch the cutscenes.
I own complete NA SEGA CD and 32X collections now and I can honestly say there are only a handful of games in both libraries that I am either nostalgic for or consider good games but the preservationist in me does find values in collecting the turds.

I suppose you say this simply because of the lack of playable Robin or the fact that he hardly appears at all. All in all, it's just a licensing matter that had to be done that way. Actually the SNES Konami game was going to be branded Batman the Animated Series, same as the Konami Game Boy game. There's a prototype of the Konami SNES game which still follows the old branding. However, at the time of release the series has already moved to the new branding so they had no choice but to switch to that in order not to sell and outdated product. The Mega Drive, Mega CD and Game Gear games by Sega didn't have to switch anything, they were already licensed to the new branding of the series when they were developed (in fact, the Mega CD game was a bit late in its release).

How is it even possible that they didn't port Outrun to this thing?

Reminds me of a lot of Traveller's Tales' games. TT games usually had impressive visuals and innovative mechanics that pushed the hardware to it's limits, but the gameplay itself was often mediocre.

Yeah! Its very difficult but.... who cares? Full scaling graphics for the sega cd. I don' t need anything more. Sega lord X can you take a look to Soul Star? Great as always! Saludos!

Its too bad they didn’t just add the cart version to the Sega Cd version, and tweak the difficulty of both games it would have been a pretty great experience!

Couldn't agree more with the ending line, re-release the Genesis version with the cut scenes as a special edition instead of this game

Such a shame, I loved the driving sections on Batman Returns. Technically so good but what were they thinking? A fast and thrilling race and chase in the Batmobile would have been fantastic, but no drive carefully through heavy traffic... hmmm damn shame :) ! Great review though !

Huh, not even a Jesper Kyd soundtrack on this one? Now that's unfortunate. While not bad per se, the one in this got nothing on Kyd's glorious score for the Genesis game.
But an interesting game still, even in its flawedness. Feels like a quarter-muncher arcade game from the early 90s that got its first release _way_ past the time it might have made something of an impact in the arcades robbing kids of their quarters. If it dropped the extensive FMV segments and was put it in a flashy, loud arcade cabinet with some suitably gimmicky batmobile styled control columns, it would pass as an arcade gamen from around '92~93.
