Because it mattered more back then. Plus you needed commercials more then, then you do now. With virtually no internet. These companies had to do advertising like that more. Because that was there best way to sell their product.
My buddy Steve Henifin did the sound design for The Terminator Sega CD game. We called him Steve-bot as a nick name. He went on to do some great work for Silicon Knights back when they were in business. Sadly he's no longer with us. But I'll always remember hanging out with him at the Goth Clubs :)
Another Computer rpg port to Sega CD, Eye of the Beholder, also uses the mouse. It also got a soundtrack the computer versions didn’t, done by the composer of music from the Streets of Rage games.
Good topic. The Sega CD is an overlooked game system for sure, although having to spend three hundred dollars for the system in addition to the two hundred dollars for a Sega Genesis did not sit well with a lot of us.
I got in with the $229 Model 2 and was easier to stomach. I definitely got my money's worth out of the Sega CD. Got to experience Sewer Shark, Road Avenger, Hook, Snatcher, Panic, Secret of Monkey Island, Lunar, Shining Force CD, Jurassic Park all back in the day. As cheesy as some of those games are, it really felt next level back then. A Blockbuster two towns over carried Sega CD games as well and got to experience more that way.
@@jessragan6714 we got one used for christmas 1994 when they were cheaper. Awesome games Road Avenger, Lunar, Final Fight CD, Hook, Sonic CD, Time Gal and so many more games i bought them all used relativly cheap by then.
My friends and I were talking about how Sega missed out on a huge chance to sell more Sega CD units. Release both a cartridge version of a game and a CD version. The CD version though would cost half or less than half of the cartridge version since production costs would be insanely low. You end up saving a bunch of money in the long run with the Sega CD.
I was a senior editor for VGA magazine and I still remember stopping by one of our affiliate stores and picking up my Sega CD. It was a great day, Steve had it waiting on the counter for me. The Sega CD had so much potential, but Sega didn't utilize its hardware properly. There were a couple games like soul star that definitely showed what the Sega CD could do. Snatcher of course is unbelievably awesome. And there are several other wonderful games on the platform. I still play my Sega CD that I bought that day, but most of the time I emulate it on my steam deck. I love Jaguar xj220 on the go, the RPGs, and the shooters. Because of revisionist History by people who weren't even alive when this thing was out it's gotten a raw deal, it was a really cool platform and I'm glad I own it. Thanks for not going down the cliched revisionist history about the Sega CD causing Sega's downfall, it didn't. 🤦 Edit: Mickey Mania being too easy? 😂
If you like the Sega CD version of Final Fight, you should check out the fan port to the Genesis that's being developed right now. The music obviously isn't CD quality, but the graphics are arguably better, with more characters on screen at once. It's super impressive. This was a good list of notable Sega CD games. There are a bunch of other games worth checking out, like Battlecorps, the Lunar games, Shining Force CD, Thunderhawk, Rise of the Dragon, Popful Mail, Heart of the Alien, Dune, Eternal Champions, Earthworm Jim SE, etc. etc. Even though you covered the biggest titles, it might be worth doing a follow up video.
Oh, I've checked it out! It's going to be awesome and I will be downloading it the instant it's available (Capcom will probably take it down 2 seconds afterwards.)
@@GregsGameRoom Possible but I hope not. There have already been a bunch of public demos, so I'd think if they had a problem with it they would've done something about it already. It would be really great if companies like Capcom would embrace fan projects like that more often.
Any list that contains Panic and Soul Star is a good one. Challenge from the Dark Side and Thunderhawk are the two I'd use instead of Afterburner and Mortal Kombat, but it was great to see a list that wasn't just the usual standards.
Well I'll be skipping Afterburner 3 now that I know lol, the flashing of being blown up physically hurt my eyes damn. They put in a good effort cramming Sonic CD, Final Fight, Slipheed & Night Striker (amongst many others depending on region) onto that Mega Drive/Genesis Mini II way back when they released it which your video reminded me of, it's a shame we'll never see any of these commercially available due to Sega pulling pretty much everything "retro" from every digital storefront for whatever crazy reason they had.
Ninja Warriors is just fun. On PC Engine it looks more or less like this. It's just a very fun gameplay loop. But I don't remember there being a choice of character.
Ninja Warriors is miles better on SNES, also I would have asded: Android Assault... Robo Aleste... Keio Flying Squadron... Popful Mail... Shining Force CD... Eternal Champions... and Monkey Island
Sega CD has some great titles, the RPGS, Snatcher, Rise of the Dragon, Willy Beamish and a few you've named here as well. People shit on it, but it has some great titles. I have a soft spot for Frankenstein, it's a weird mix of genres.
Honestly those early cd based systems before Playstation got way too much flack To be fair, some do have understandable reasons why they failed I feel that alot of the multimedia cd based consoles before Playstation (in spite of their limitations and not alot to offer) are just way ahead of their time (in a way that it's released at the wrong time) Say whatever you want about sega cd, 3do, Amiga cd32, cdi, Turbo grafix cd, atari jaguar cd But they did break new grounds in different ways before Playstation came out As for sonic cd, it's definitely a divisive game but if you treat it as a side story before sonic 2 and after sonic 1 it might be enjoyable Honestly, if you want a bad video game console The tiger consoles such as the R zone and ljn video art are standing right there
Final Fight just seemed like a weird choice for Sega, given that Streets of Rage II had already blown right past it in terms of graphical quality and overall game play.
Greg i've been discussing this with pizzamonmario but What are your thoughts on people dismissing games such as kart racers and platform fighters because it ripped off a mario game I think its ridiculous yes mario revolutionized the gaming industry but the franchise never invented it I also understand that shovelware exists But even so hating on a game because mario did it first is a snap judgement opinion A video game may have its own problems that nobody would talk about Bottom line wouldnt it make more sense to judge a game on its own as a game
There’s a lot of cash-grab clones for sure. But lots of kart racers did it right and are legitimately fun. I’m partial to Crash Team Racing and Loony Tunes Space Race.
The add-on was a complete failure. I regretted buying it at the time. Apart from adding additional cutscenes, and CD quality music, it failed to ignite any real passion.
Sega CD was a lot of wasted potential thanks to the FMV craze of that era. It COULD have been great, with basically beefed up Genesis style games with CD music and more storage space. Instead while there were games like that.... too many shitty FMV "games" that are barely games.
I think it could have done much better if more games had used its sprite scaling abilities (like Soul Star and the Batman Returns vehicle levels). Although I just recently learned it was seriously hampered in that regard by a defect in some early production runs of the Genesis, where there was an issue with some of the data lines of the CD connector. Rather than recall those units, developers just weren't allowed to use those data lines, severely limiting how much data could be streamed between the Genesis and Sega CD (which made sprite scaling in particular very challenging). Such a shame. The games that used that technology effectively really stood out on the system.

Why was that commercial still better than any video game commercial in the last 20 years?
Definitely one of the most memorable commercials ever!
Because it mattered more back then. Plus you needed commercials more then, then you do now. With virtually no internet. These companies had to do advertising like that more. Because that was there best way to sell their product.

Animation and sounds are definitely better on Sega CD. Just wish the color and graphics were better.

I think Popful Mail is a great Sega CD game that could be added to this list as well! Great video!
Maybe I'll do an RPG video one day.
@ That be awesome! That’s a great RPG!
I loved my Sega CD, and I still have it. It was a decent machine, but competition was fierce back then.
Sega stood out though!
3:15 - there *is* a mouse for the Genesis/Sega CD, and this game is one of the few compatible ones.

Some of the reviews I read said it was an "easy game for kids." Some good games for the SCD and they're not all FMV like it's reputation!
I think the CD version of Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin is worth a look, even if games for him took a great big leap in the PS1 era onwards.

Funny thing about Snatcher. Not only is it the only English version, but it also was the only version that never came out in Japanese.
Silpheed and Lunar are missing must haves on the system
Had to choose between Silphed and Starblade for this video. Lunar… I’m not much for RPGs.
@GregsGameRoom Silpheed is much more impressive imo, looks like real 3D graphics.
I always loved AH-3 Thunderstrike myself. Cheesy rock soundtrack and blowing stuff up.
