Most of y'all, when you think of a train, may envision huge high-horsepower locomotives, 15 feet tall and 70 feet long pulling trains up to two miles long across the country. However, the cars that these big trains pull eventually have to end up to small customers, small customers that may not have the space or money to be using conventional train locomotives for their operations. And when a switcher isn't available to do the job, where do these businesses look to? They look to the little engines that can, the tiny railroading machines that still pack enough punch to get the job done. And today, we'll look at some of the most common ones. Hope you enjoy. :)

Hilariously, I later discovered (after I was done editing) this video from Wabtec about the advantages of having rubber tires (it’s more than just being a hi-railer), and in the video they legit drew animations of the TrackMobile being obsolete. So, just more emphasis to the fact that the Shuttlewagon and the TrackMobile are NOT the same thing. 😂

Awesome. I use a track mobile to move hopper cars at work. I also use a mid range aircraft tug.
There is a shuttlewagon that switches this beef tallow plant in the old Chicago stockyards along this NS industrial lead. I have seen it pretty far outside of their property struggling to wrangle cuts of tank cars back into their yard. It will have the crossing gates activated sitting there slipping its wheels lol. Those crossing gates protect a 4 track mainline(maybe 3 and a yard lead) and the industry lead that branches off. You will think a train is coming, and its just the shuttlewagen struggling with 10 loaded cars lol .It has been doing it apparently successfully for atleast 15 years though. I once saw them drive it around the corner to a truck stop to fuel it up too lol

I worked at the Tyson plant in Gainesville that you videoed that little guy. I watched ghat little guy move cars for months. Never thought anyone would want to know about them.
There is also a small locomotive called a tp56 made by tractive power corp thats pretty neat.
