@Coaster_F59PHI The Amtrak Hiawatha has a maximum speed of 79 miles per hour (127 kilometers per hour). The Hiawatha is Amtrak's busiest line in the Midwest and its sixth-busiest route overall. It runs between Chicago and Milwaukee, with stops at Glenview, Sturtevant, Milwaukee Airport Rail Station, and Milwaukee Intermodal Station. @@icosthop9998 _“People do not have the Patience anymore…”_ People never did. It's in part because trains have become _stupidly_ long in Canada and the U.S.-nobody want's to be stuck at a level crossing watching a 2½-mile long train pass for several minutes. At a respectable 30 mph (~50 km/h) clip, a 2½-mile (~4'000 m) long train takes 5-minutes to clear a level crossing, if it isn't forced to slow for curves¹ or transition through switches (points). Here in Canada, max train lengths are between 3.7 km (2.3 miles or 12'140 ft) and 4.2 km (2.6 miles or 13'780 ft)-the latter max length is allowed for double-stacked intermodal. I would imagine max train lengths are similar in the U.S. In Europe, goods (freight) trains are limited to 750 m (~½-mile or 2'460 ft) in length and will clear a level crossing in 1½-minutes at 50 km/h (30 mph). At 120 km/h (~75 mph)-max track speed for freight in Europe-they'll clear a level crossing in just under 23 seconds (less time than it takes for an intersection traffic light to make a full cycle). -- ¹ The max speed (mph) around curves is determined by the formula: Vₘₐₓ = √((Ea + 3)/0.0007·d) where _Ea_ is the level elevation of the outer rail above the inner rail (a.k.a. _‘superelevation’)_ in inches and _d_ is the _degree of curvature²_ of the curve. ² _Degree of curvature_ pertains to the change in tangential direction, a train makes as it moves through a curve per 100 ft (30.48 m) cord length travelled. i.e.: a 3° curve with no superelevation limits track speed to 38 mph (~61 km/h); with a superelevation of 1" that max speed can increase to 44 mph (~71 km/h); a superelevation of 6" (max allowed superelevation) permits a track speed of 66 mph (~106 km/h). A 6° curve would limit track speed to a max 27 mph (0" superelevation), 31 mph (1" superelevation) or 46 mph (6" superelevation) respectively.

Once the train is put into emergency it takes a lot of time to release the brakes again especially on long freight trains. That is because there is s something like a hose (or brake line I don't know the correct word in English) that needs to be filled up with air again and that takes time depending on the length of the train
I don’t blame the engineer for putting the train into emergency, unfortunately when this happens and there is no collisions that happen, it can cause a crew to get in trouble. As stupid as that is, managers don’t care and neither does the corporate side. There’s an unwritten rule I’ve heard of which is “don’t shoot it until you hear the crunch” thankfully that guy got out of the way though because the emotional and mental effects of something like this actually taking a life is something no one can understand unless they go through it themselves.
Very true. "Don't dump until the bump" is a pretty general idea in the locomotive engineer business. could i also send a bill to every person who crosses the street in front of me causing me to step on the brakes? lol it's a massive greedy corporation, i think they can afford it, after all those crew cutbacks and doubling up of trains to 'save money' and all...
@@PC-bd3uh Different than with a train where the train clearly had ROW.
@@woodalexander ...and cars clearly have ROW on major roads
@@PC-bd3uh Except that they don't. People do.
@@woodalexander cars have the row on major roads in majority of states, but not at legit crosswalks etc - google is your friend, use it sometime ;)
lol charging folks bc they have to put their brakes on for safety 😅
I feel bad for that crew
Do you know how many times I just wanted to see that it in life was worth the wait.
Ik that engineer was about to have a heart attack
& his train is going to be late to its' destinations too because some idiot on a bicycle went around the crossing gate to try to beat it.
P@@KevinRichards-my5oj
@@KevinRichards-my5oj train was probably late anyways. atp the engineer does NOT care about how late the train is, all they're responsible for is getting it where it's going.
If you want to play with trains then create yourself a model railroad. DO NOT play with the real thing, they can kill ya.
Not to mention inconvenience a "bunch" of other people at the same time. All to try and cross the tracks ahead of the train. (shaking the head)
18th vehicle stopped on the crossing.

0:02 crossing equipment activated
0:15 gates down
0:16 oh, no, not a cyclist attempting to beat the train? !!!!
0:36 Train is visible to the camera clear of a utility pole at right of screen; and cyclist still coming
0:44 cyclist crashed (loses a hat?)
0:45 train horn
0:48 emergency application audible
0:52 cyclist and bike clear of train (inside the second) (37s from gates down to on the crossing)
1:22 brakes start to apply (34s and 7 vehicles after application across the crash location)
1:53 train stopped; 1 minute and 5 seconds to stop (3 locomotives +
15:16 train starts to move
18:00 train clears crash location (2m44s for rest of train to clear)
18:15 gates up (started rising at 18:09) & traffic moving
18 minute delay to everyone else for a FAILED attempt to beat the train. Something tells me that he has done that before without issue. If he had waited, a wait of less than (37s + 2m44s =) 3m21s of train movement to clear the crossing. Probably less than a minute without slowing down or speeding up.
Ew check out the rat scurrying away from the noise at 0:53 on the left side of the screen next to the building
We have the same problem here in Sth Australia, 🇦🇺, so far theres been about 18 fatalities in my state alone, not counting the other states
Should have put the Mt Dew and/or smokes on the rail before the train pulled out. Great visual if the guy comes back for them.
In loving memory of when everyone involved had clean underwear…
The bicycle guy was not familiar with crossing to make that big of a bungle.
I think the biker is okay
Definitely an oh shit moment
He escaped the shallow end of the gene pool
Very lucky. That Z could have been going much faster.
If it had he wouldn't of tried to cross the tracks because the train would already been going through the crossing..
"Z" is for Zippy!
Yeah those Z trains haul the mail. That's because most of them are priority trains so they really move seems to me that people just do not have any common sense anymore I mean they just can't wait a few extra minutes for the train to pass and live they would rather take a chance on beating a train. All a bunch of idiots.
Almost died for mountain dew and newports....amazing
Also, BNSF runs Z-trains, not UP. This is a high priority, but not the hottest on the road, as it has reefer traffic, but no UPS/FedEx/LTL traffic which is the hottest and under contract for delivery by a certain time.
UP also uses the symbol Z for their high-priority intermodals
@@MidIowaRails Interesting. I've never heard of them referred to that way. Regardless, that's a medium-hot train not an extra spicy-hot train like a Z train, as there's no UPS/FedEx/LTL traffic on it.
@@MidIowaRails If that actually is called a Z train on UP, then they're using it differently than BNSF where the Z trains are the hottest thing other than (maybe) Amtrak on the road.
@@woodalexander Z trains on UP are also the highest priority, just like on BNSF. Just because there's little-to-no TOFC, doesn't mean it's not hot traffic.
@@MidIowaRails Not TOFC physically, but UPS/FedEX/LTL. LTL is usually TOFC, but UPS and FedEX use both TOFC pups and 53' cans.
cops show up 20 minutes later to take a report. I'm guessing the closet Dunkin is 20 minutes from that spot.
oyu cyclist learned anything?
The dunking actually like 3 blocks down and the station 2. Lol wild .
Looks like a pretty typical homeless person. These people do not care about death and just blithely walk into the street in front of speeding cars. The casual way this bum dragged his bike back tells you what you need to know.
Never plug it unless you hear the thump.
Not anymore. The Michigan Supreme Court ruled recently that because the engineer and conductor had a two second conversation, they could’ve began braking at that point, but didn’t, therefore, they ruled that the family can sue the railroad.

bros so lucky
in the game of humans vs trains the trains always win
I've got a 50 that says he came looking for his cigarettes after he cleaned out his underwear.
(facepalm) 🤦♂
bro dont care about the bike let it go, the bike is not worth ur life 1:08
Wow ! Look how long it took the train to stop. People dont realize its not a car! And that smart ass punk on the bike should have been arrested.
Really?, DPU's 20 something deep? Just couldn't put all the power on the head end of that short train. SMH.
Oh a bicyclist! But you don’t understand rules don’t apply to bicycles…

Give that guy a Darwin Award.............
NO! He didn’t earn it.
The Darwin Award is presented to those people who improve the gene pool by removing themselves from it.
He didn’t die, nor did he appear to lose his ability to reproduce. He doesn’t qualify.
Нужно было ещё пару дней поснимать, очень короткое видео, ничего не понятно

Common sense is not so common
Some people have to try Hard to prove they are Stupid and it makes you wonder how they survived thru Childhood !
Why did the train stop if the bonehead wasn't hit?
The put it in emergency stop when they saw the cyclist on the tracks. Then they have to stop and recharge the brake system before proceeding.
😂😂😂Almost got a Darwin award!!!
The bike was probably stolen
Why did the train stop if he got up???
Once the train is put into emergency it takes a lot of time to release the brakes again especially on long freight trains. That is because there is s something like a hose (or brake line I don't know the correct word in English) that needs to be filled up with air again and that takes time depending on the length of the train
Darwin nominee
I would probably pee myself if i was the driver
I would think you would be more likely to pee yourself if you were the biker...
I definitely have if I was the biker
@@PowerTrain611 the biker shoulda known better, and I would still run but realize I did something dumb
Biker wanted to earn the Darwin Award. I’d be more annoyed by the delay than anything.
One of the reasons is that from the height of the cab you will lose sight of the object just a bit before the train gets to it and some people (like this guy) manage to get out of the way with a split second to spare.
First off, I'd never go passed activated gates, but if I did the second I felt myself crashing I'd be diving off the bike or rushing to get up and away as fast as possible, not just casually do it like the train is going to stop.
Bro chill
Darwin almost won
