The scene where Miles Teller (who played McDonough in the film Only the Brave) walked into the room of waiting wives and they all looked at him and realized he was the sole survivor they heard rumor about. Man. That tore my heart out. The film was beautiful and they did a fantastic job of portraying their brotherhood.

Actually got to this point from the movie, the way i look at it, not only did he carry the weight of the initial guilt of him surviving but he lost 19 people that day while most only lost 1.
robert moore yeah man i see it the same way..dudes got much more mental stability than i do..i dont know that i would have been able to handle that but then again noone does until they are forced to..
Exactly... Imagine losing 19 guys you considered your brothers, and wondering why you were spared. Imagine if you couldn't let go of that feeling of, "why me?" I am so glad he has recovered from this and is moving on to great things, but I doubt this guy will go through anything like this ever again in his life... It was for sure a very dark time for him. I didn't initially know about this happening years ago, for some reason (I live in Canada and it may not have been as widely broadcast here), so I had no idea when I watched the movie last night that this actually happened until I got to the end... Man I fricken lost it. I was really upset.

@@swoop-it4621it’s probably the same feeling soldiers go through when they lose their platoon in an ambush or a minefield. I’m willing to bet many of the guys in Mogadishu had to mentally go through that.
Then, dealing with the wives, possibly resenting him for being the one who took watch.
I watched the movie not knowing fully what it was all about, untill the end, man I lost it. R.I.P hotshots!!! 💪

Recently signed up to be an on call wildland firefighter for my state dnr(far and away from being a hotshot though). I knew the story when I watched it, but my fiance did not. She was not happy with me, needles to say. Still hit me pretty hard though, and what was probably the single most powerful point was hearing the words "prepare a deployment zone". Something you never want to have to do as a wff

I just watched it for the first time tonight. Not ever hearing of this event just watching because I'm a huge josh Brolin fan. This is one of if not the most heart wrenching movie I have ever seen. R.I.P too all those brave men.
Same... I live in Canada and I must have missed the news coverage years ago when it happened. I watched the movie last night, and when the fire started surrounding them, I got a pit in my stomach. I knew it was going to be a movie where someone we care about dies. When the fire started surrounding them and they had to get under their shelters, I turn to my boyfriend and go, "what if they all die?!" and he goes, "that's pretty unlikely". And then when they showed the burnt shelters I lost it and started to cry and was like, "THEY ALL DIED! YOU WERE WRONG! 😭" Then, when I thought I had chilled out and wasn't going to cry anymore, the end of the movie shows ther pictures and names and I was like, "THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED? OH MY GOD! 😭😭😭" and my boyfriend goes, "Woah... That fucking sucks." Neither of us had any idea. It fucking tore me apart, man.
That was a stupid ass question that reporter asked him "Do you feel like you're a hero"

My mom was pretty tight with that crew, she spent a lot of time at Whiskey Row with them guys. I had the priveledge of meeting Grant and Chris, true heroes. I still remember my mom being devastated when she got the news. May these gentlemen forever rest in peace.

I cried when i watched the movie. I have had close friends that were in the army in my unit committed suicide, that I tried to help. But to this day I still wonder what I could have done differently to have a different outcome. Brendan McDonough even though you might not see this comment I will be praying for you and the families of the 19 hero's.

I got meet Brendan McDonough when I volunteered at the granite creek cleanup .this was on April,21,2018.he is so cool and nice guy.i love in Prescott Arizona
Donut is one to remember just as much as those lost. Not many can tell his story and being able to do it is tremendously admirable. If you know his story, it's not hard to see why God kept him alive.
Watched the movie over n over and cried n cried like a baby .. here in New Zealand this tragedy was relatively unknown. Had no idea about the work, risks and sacrifices of USAs Wildland Firefighters until I saw the movie.
1000% Respect and Love for all Firefighters, Wildland crews, and particularly Granite Mountain Hotshots.

Words can not convey how you feel, and it has to be really hard for you. The consolation is that they all went fighting with your other brothers and the job they love. My heart goes to those family members that they left behind, and I commend you for your courage. Thank you.
As a lone survivor it can be hard. There are 19 angels watching over Brendan now.

This is truly a humbling story I am a hotshot in the mountains of NC and we have been charging into the inferno every chance we get this is true it is hard to lose a brother I have never had to go through that but my prayers go out to my fallen brothers

I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of guilt this man must have felt and still feels. Most people get horrible survivors guilt after loosing 2 or 3 but I can’t even imagine 19 people who were practically his brothers. He is extremely brave in the fact he kept it together because I don’t think I would personally be able to handle the guilt and would probably take my own life

They had no chance with the wind changing direction, high fast moving fire.
Kammers10 yeah there really isn't anything you can do when the fire is going a 1/4mile per minute, that's 15mph. They had no chance.
Well they did, they could have remained in the black but they chose to leave it. The winds had already picked up to 50 mph before they left the black yet they still chose to leave it. They knew they no longer had a spotter and yet they still chose to leave the black. An egotistical decision killed those 19 brave souls. Let this be a lesson to egotistical men who think they can overcome anything. Nature is beautiful, scary and unpredictable. The moment you believe you can control nature is the moment nature reminds you of how small and weak you are compared to it.
noobhealz402 they left because they were trying to get to safety, the fire was headed their way and it could have surrounded them, they left to get to the safe area but the 15MPH winds made the fire catch up with them and they died as a result, the decision he made wasn’t because of his ego nor, could he have controlled where the fire was going, it was just bad timing, don’t act like their chief got them killed cause he didn’t, don’t disrespect those heroes.

@ReddWolfe_Gaming marsh lead his men to their death. It was a very bad decision....they were safe in the black. In order to get his men in that situation many of the 18 watch outs and 10 standard orders had to be violated in order to do so. Even most fire fighters don’t understand marshes decision. That being said, the fire absolutely did outperform any of their expectations and experiences. Even heroes make mistakes.

Surviving makes him no less or more of a hero than those that didn't; they were all prepared to die for the sake of others.
As a trained firefighter, were not prepared to die. We do the best we can to help others, no matter what that looks like. But every fire company in the US has a widespread amd shared creed: "Everyone goes home."
Huge respect for these heroes. God has chosen you, to tell the story of the brave 20 who sacrificed their everything to protect others.
Ey have never watched a movie and feel my tears and choke from a cry on my throat wanting to burst out. THOSE ARE/WERE REAL SOLDIERS They left behind their beautiful families especially their caring and loving wives. CONDOLENCES From South Africa.
I really really hope they didn’t suffer too much. They were real heroes and didn’t deserve death.
Given the design of the shelters they likely didn't. The shelter would have failed surrounded by fire. Air under the shelter gets sucked out, replaced with fumes several hundred degrees higher than what the human brain can withstand. Would have flash-boiled all the fluid in their body.
Probably a second of the worst headache of your life, confusion, and then nothing.
I watch the true film about these very brave men, i cried i cried it broke my heart. RIP

Instant Equality 4U, you have no idea what has happened in MY home. I have lived in Prescott my entire life and we are not fucked. The members of such a group like the Hotshots were referred to as seasonal employees. This means during the season, they may work a full day and then some. They are not working 40+ hours a week year round. This is during the season where fire danger is at their peak. The seasonal employees hired on by the city do not pay into a benefit program. They are given the information prior to their induction to their future position. This is also in effect for coaches, referees, construction workers, tree trimmers, any seasonal employment of the city. They were much more than heroes to our town. They were family and we take care of ours. However, rules are put in place for a reason and BY LAW and the signatures of the individuals themselves, they fully understood the hazards of the job. We will forever take care of our heroes and their families.
God bless these guys..will be thinking of them and their families and friends and co workers during this holiday.. 19 extra angels will be watching over us this Christmas..hope all of us take just a few moments to remember these heroes.

In this show, a whole battalion of soldiers were killed but 1 member, its commander. They built up the whole battalion again but instead of white and red armor, they wore grey and white armor in memory of their lost men.
