We Spent 24 Hours With A California Firefighting Crew (HBO)

  • This morning, a contract firefighter died in Napa County. His truck rolled over the edge of a steep road as he rushed to get more water to battle the Nuns fire, one of 14 still raging in Northern California.
    It was the first death of a firefighter and the 41st death overall from wildfires that are among the worst in the state’s history. In eight days, they’ve burned more than 213,000 acres, destroyed close to 5700 structures and forced the evacuations of at least 40,000 people.
    11,000 firefighters are still battling the deadly blazes. VICE News spent 24 hours with a crew working around the clock on the northern edge of the Nuns fire.

    My daughter is a wildland firefighter based in Redding Ca. It's been a busy year for her and the crew. The Petersburg fire, the Klamathon fire, the Ferguson fire, the Carr fire, the Ranch and Mendocino complex, the Hirz fire and the Delta fire. Her crew along with hundreds of other firefighters from across the west are now in Florida to help aid in the relief after hurricane Michael. They are all amazing people.

      It's called "editing". Lots of fire work is waiting, which makes lousy TV.

    • @ToHarsh4blitz
      @ToHarsh4blitz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      madhatte73 I understand what editing is. I also understand the routine of a fire fighter. My father used to fight forest fires in lake county.
      I think all our concern is if they stayed with these firefighters for 24 hours and only got 4 minutes of usable video, maybe the film crew didn't do a good job.

    I just spent this past week in Sonoma County (my hometown and where almost all of my family is) working in evacuation centers and talking with countless strangers and friends alike who have lost their homes and all within, some barely making it out of their homes before the flames consumed the house. I cannot accurately begin to explain the depths of grief, nor the breadth of hope that is being shown there right now. Entire neighborhoods, stores, schools, blocks, businesses, ranches, wineries, etc. gone. All gone. In all the years of my family living where we do in Sonoma County (not far from the ocean, surrounded by rolling green hills and giant redwood trees), we've never seen fire like this. These men and women, all first responders, are coming from far and wide and going above and beyond, often without food, water, bathroom breaks, or sleep for long periods of time, many having lost their own homes. If not for them, the devastation of fires and fools would be thousand-fold. There's a whole lot of hurt in this world right now, and we could all use a hug, some tea, and genuine kindness and caring. Hug those you love, things truly do change in an instant.

    I fought 9 wildland fires as a class II guy, and I'm here to tell ya: that shit is rough work. I was young then, couldn't imagine trying to do it in my 40's now. Digging fireline and mopping up hot spots is a far harder day than bucking hay. Then do that for a couple weeks of 12 hour days without a break.

      I think that's a CalFire thing -- the rest of us in the wildland community are only allowed 16 per shift, and then are required to take 8 off. It is a safety concern. Deployments can last awhile. 14 days, 2 off, unless deployed with DoD -- then 30.

    Hey good move on cutting down the burning porch. I was there the same day in the beginning of the video before Cal fire with my hand crew from Oregon as an F2, and when we were about finished digging that line around the house a fuel tank for the generator was letting out gas from the heat of the fire. I seriously thought an animal was burning alive untill it continued screaming, and then the gas started feeding the fire which was when my crew boss pulled out our crew back to the DP. Which was when Cal fire took over. Then halfway down the hill we all heard the fuel tank explode. Good job to everyone who worked on any of the three fires. Too many homes were lost those couple weeks.

    • @skydiverclassc2031
      @skydiverclassc2031 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With 1 1/2" hose it's the easiest way to gather hose during structure protection. The engines have two hooks on the back on which to hang hose. You butterfly the 100' sections, hang i them on the hooks, and move on to the next problem.

    To those wondering why they're setting fires, it's called Backburning, it's when they set fires to go toward the first fire, it's meant to cut of oxygen supply to the fire and extinguish it, And yes this tactic may backfire and just join into the original fire.

    You would expect
    From the past fire when dry season
    They would be better prepared to prevent these hazards

      Rex Wort it’s pretty difficult preventing fires with high winds,low humidity, low water, dry land and idiots who don’t put out cigarettes

      Sure. And spend the money to prevent bed bugs. And drought. And earthquakes. And Santa Ana winds. And mountain lions. And...

      VST
      That understandable
      But shouldn't they start do daily or hourly irrigation during that season like we do with grass
      It going to cost money but it better than paying for new properties, medical bills, and lost lives.

      How do you plan on irrigating (daily) over 55 MILLION acres of Forest, Brush and Grasslands? You would need 1.5 TRILLION gallons of water A DAY. Where do you get that from and how do you get it there? And what do you do about the damage to the environment from drastically changing the plant life?

      Bob Robert its a very physically rigorous job. They get pretty much any capable man and woman they can get but its a lot of ground to cover. Some of these guys pull 48 or 72 hours with maybe a few hours of sleep here and there.

    Just drop fucking water from planes like russians seems to work pretty ok there

      The fires spread faster than they can put them out with water buckets. It's better to eliminate the fuel sources and then extinguish it when it can't spread any further.

      They also do that but it doesn't always work. Also there is only so much ground to cover in large fires. Fire fighting has an aviation element to it that is strong, but they can't always have helicopters and planes in the air its a multiprong attack.
