Not that it makes it any less of a loss, but if their shelters were significantly heat resistant they likely passed out from hypoxia before they ever felt the worst of the burns. Fires that intense literally consume all available oxygen in seconds.
I am an aspiring firefighter, and the respect I have for these men is truly unmeasurable. This story brought tears to my eyes. The fact that those men went in to a fire, knowing the risk, is inspiring for me to do better and to help make the world a better place. Their deaths were very tragic, but never forgotten. Firefighters will always remind me that there is still good and hope in this messed up world.
Find a good reputable local department that has close ties with DNRC, the forest service, or BLM. Sit down with the captains, learn all you can, and they'll point you in the direction you need to go.

I called a guy in Colorado, my home state, because he had a room for rent. As it turned out, he had been a Smoke Jumper for many years and just wanted someone to talk to. I don't remember his name,,,but I wish I did. He was a Great Man who had done many Brave things. These guys DESERVE our Ultimate Respect. They do this voluntarily. They're in my prayers,,,,and Hopefully in yours too
The final report of the accident indicated that the fire fighters had descended into the canyon and lost sight of the fire which had shifted towards them and the canyon .. giving them only minutes to prepare to shelter. Indications were that they were surprised to see the fire as it turned into the canyon. This contradicts what was reported in this video.

I had a calling for the last 8 months to go and see for myself where it all happened. I saw the movie Only The Brave, as well as reading the book Brandon wrote and felt the beauty in how to them it wasn’t just a job, they were all so close brothers for sure and family in more ways than one. When I got to Prescott,Az I went to the museum in the mall and donated a wreath that I had made by hand the gentleman who were there were in aww by the fact of all the effort I did in making it and one asked if it was ok to write a story about my calling, I said it would be my honor. So he took my picture standing next to Eric Marsh a true leader and in my eyes helped all of them to be family not just there Supt. It will be written in a news letter that the gentleman writes and I was in tears by that time. So as I left the museum I was one step closer to completing my calling. The next was to see the Juniper Tree that they saved in the Doce fire just outside of town, I have to say it was a hike but having a truck helped, I won’t say where it is you’ll have to do some digging yourself. Then came the hike up Granite Mountain,7 miles round trip with a 7% grade and switch back trails but I did it and along the way it was sad I cried a lot. But when I got to the top and looked down at the fatality sight it humbled me and brought me to my knees. I couldn’t do the Journey Trail as is was another mile down and back,then back down the Hotshot trail an it was 5pm. So I will be going back and doing it all again and completing the whole hike. Please if you want an experience of a lifetime,I would say do all that I did and more you will never see or feel anything like it ever.

Even if he had told them to get out, there still was not enough time... Usually in a forest fire with trees, they are walking in the fire, kicking, stomping and removing fuel. After all these years since this story - as someone that was born and raised in northern california and watched entire neighborhoods and homes i spent my growing up in, and my family lose homes, and lose family friends to wildfires - hotshots and smokejumpers are top tier heroes and it sucks to know that there's probably a lot of folks that fight fires and lose comrades and feel survivors guilt like that
Honestly the people who say he’s lying or that it was his fault you are all fucking ignorant I’m sorry. That fire was going 60 Miles per hour and spread over 8,300 fucking acres. He was on the other side of the entire thing and was saved before the fire killed him too. There was nothing at that moment he could have done, he couldn’t even run there or warn them over radio. He’s not lying.

I live in the uk i have watched the movie about this sad tragedy i have the up most respect for all hot shot crews i was in tears at the end of the movie because my heart went out to all the families much love and respect to all fire crews i will apologise for the bad spelling and grammar but I do have learning difficulties before anyone complaints about it
What have we done to prevent these kinds of tragedies. IE, radios, fire shelters, and a better manner of tracking our fire combatants as to aid us in aiding them!!!!!!! Have we forgotten???

It’s not impossible, to maintain an escape route, never, ever get circled. A helicopter is a necessary tool to be utilized for its observation ability…Never lose your position.

I did the hike to the site and it’s crazy how close it is to the town of yarnell. The ranch they were trying to reach was only a stones throw from where they got trapped.
It’s always weird to me that so many people loose their lives on days they shouldn’t even be there. So many pilots have died on planes due to mechanical problems, on days that they traded to work on. So many police officers have been shot on overtime. Construction workers get hit by cars when they are holding up traffic just one more time before heading home. And now all of these firefighters. They all died on their off days. They were just looking to make some extra cash, but then this happened.
Wow the movie adapted this very well As for what happened it’s almost impossible or very difficult to predict or fight against Mother Nature from Tornados, Hurricanes to even Wildfires.

That poor guy. He must have survivor guilt like no other. He's a good man and was looking out for good men. He did nothing wrong but he clearly feels deep pain for the loss of his comrades. I hope he is ok. I know about this as I lived in the lower elevation town of Wickenburg. Yarnell is also a place I know from friends and family I visited there. That was a serious day for us.

Best route is through the national guard. You get the certifications needed if you volunteer and you get experience.

Even if he had told them to get out, there still was not enough time... Usually in a forest fire with trees, they are walking in the fire, kicking, stomping and removing fuel. Arizona is a desert that usually does not burn. Its invasive grass that has fueled fires there. Every decision made that day was standard procedure. Anyways, your comment sucks!

I couldn't imagine suffering from survivor guilt! I am glad he had people around him as it would have so easy for him to give up on life after this due to the trauma

After all these years since this story - as someone that was born and raised in northern california and watched entire neighborhoods and homes i spent my growing up in, and my family lose homes, and lose family friends to wildfires - hotshots and smokejumpers are top tier heroes and it sucks to know that there's probably a lot of folks that fight fires and lose comrades and feel survivors guilt like that

Honestly the people who say he’s lying or that it was his fault you are all fucking ignorant I’m sorry. That fire was going 60 Miles per hour and spread over 8,300 fucking acres. He was on the other side of the entire thing and was saved before the fire killed him too. There was nothing at that moment he could have done, he couldn’t even run there or warn them over radio. He’s not lying.

I just cant imagine the terrible predicament they were all in! The firefighters, their families!!! Brendan! Just god awful! So sad! Im a firefighter from Chicago This story just make us appreciate how precious life is. You never know when that one day could be your last I hope to visit the memorial site one day and pay my respects.
i never imagined how heavy his guilt that all of his brother died in the same day and time.Those guilt that even you want to save them,you cannot go in the area to help them because of tremendous fire and the guilt that you expect that they will go home alive with you as a brother and with ther family after facing this wildfire......

I live in the uk i have watched the movie about this sad tragedy i have the up most respect for all hot shot crews i was in tears at the end of the movie because my heart went out to all the families much love and respect to all fire crews i will apologise for the bad spelling and grammar but I do have learning difficulties before anyone complaints about it
What have we done to prevent these kinds of tragedies. IE, radios, fire shelters, and a better manner of tracking our fire combatants as to aid us in aiding them!!!!!!! Have we forgotten???

This is the first I've heard of this particular story and I am so so very sorry for all of those 19. unbelievably brave, heroic, amazing men and their families and also for this 1 remaining unbelievably, brave, heroic and amazing man. To give your life to save others is insanely incredible, just as it is to risk your to save others. I hold ALL 20 of you in my prayers and all of the family members and friends. No-one deserves this and if anyone says, "If it were me, I would...." My reply would be, "Isn't it amazing how easy it is to be an armchair critic, oh, and if its a negative thing your saying against Any of these 20 men, your a fucking arsehole!"

To the amazing guy who survived, thank you for trying as hard as you did, for running towards and not away from that shockingly terrifying fire and I pray and hope you get all the support you need and you deserve support sweetheart, you did nothing wrong, you nothing to deserve what you experienced!

Didnt get to see this one but i saw the carr fire living here in Redding and was able to watch the camp fire on the news and knew people from Paradise

My son is a 24yr old Wild Land Firefighter, and i always hope and pray that when he goes out, he will return home safe. I worry the whole 14 days until he gets back home!!

really who are you to say that he didnt his job on that fire.the fire sweeped tby them to fast. he was in danger also. he did the best he could and crew did what was nesscessary. it was the way it was. I was at storm mt co in 94 where 14 brothers died it was just the way it is dont judge him on what happened
I did the hike to the site and it’s crazy how close it is to the town of yarnell. The ranch they were trying to reach was only a stones throw from where they got trapped.

It’s always weird to me that so many people loose their lives on days they shouldn’t even be there. So many pilots have died on planes due to mechanical problems, on days that they traded to work on. So many police officers have been shot on overtime. Construction workers get hit by cars when they are holding up traffic just one more time before heading home. And now all of these firefighters. They all died on their off days. They were just looking to make some extra cash, but then this happened.
Surivior guilt can be all consuming i hope he has friends and family watching out for him

As for what happened it’s almost impossible or very difficult to predict or fight against Mother Nature from Tornados, Hurricanes to even Wildfires.
Men that picture of the fire literally looks like hell come to earth, like actual flames rising from the ground about 5 stories high, how much of a badass do you have to be to look at that and just go "ok, lets get go work gentleman, this is a tuesday right now..."

That poor guy. He must have survivor guilt like no other. He's a good man and was looking out for good men. He did nothing wrong but he clearly feels deep pain for the loss of his comrades. I hope he is ok. I know about this as I lived in the lower elevation town of Wickenburg. Yarnell is also a place I know from friends and family I visited there. That was a serious day for us.

If anyone has seen how fast a wildfire can spread across terrain under a strong wind you'd realize how incredibly dangerous it can be.
