I got rid of sheath dresses, party dresses, formal dresses, heels, boots with heels. 2020 November I donated 16 garbage bags worth of clothes, shoes. Funny thing is I have never worked in an office. I ran a home daycare for 14 years and retired three years ago. My fantasy self was a corporate lady and someone who had tons of events to go to. 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈
When you said "Constantly in pursuit of my fantasy self" really resonated with me. And no matter how much I spent it never got me any closer to finding my real self. I usually gravitate to the same jeans and shirts despite having a closet full of clothes. So I'm going to go through my closet and declutter and start dressing for the real me.
I totally get the fantasy self thing. I bought an entire wardrobe (like 80 items of clothing) based on my fantasy self. Guess what? I always felt like I had nothing to wear! And nothing matched with anything else. I had been trying to go for a streetwear look, which doesn't really suit my body. Long story short, I sold most of my fantasy self stuff on Posh, took some time to figure out my style, and I now have a super and I mean SUPER small capsule wardrobe that I couldn't be happier with! I own 3 dresses, 4 nice tops/blouses, 2 pairs of jeans, and 3 pairs of slacks(the slacks are for my job). I also have one skirt. I own 4 pairs of shoes, and 2 purses. Honestly, I treasure all my pieces now and can't wait every time I get dressed in the morning. My style is SO far from the streetwear look I was going for. My entire capsule is from Doen, and I would best describe my style as a mix of Regencycore (think Pride and Prejudice/Bridgerton), and Cottagecore. I am not one for "aesthetics", but those terms are the easiest way to describe my clothes. All of my Doen pieces I purchased second-hand on Posh...trying to shop more ethically. I loved my declutter process. Once I was able to let go of feeling like I needed every "in" item in every color, I was so much happier. I also learned I can love a trend without buying it if I know it won't work for me. 😁 The only things I am still lacking in my wardrobe is loungewear and I would like to replace some of my shoes because they either are stained or don't match with a few of my pieces. I did still keep my black Doc Martens so that I can wear them with my Doen dresses...that gives me the streetwear look I love without me having to buy a whole new outfit or something that won't flatter me. Anyway, whoever read this LONGGGG post, thank you haha! 😅
I was always on the hunt for the perfect white tee bc that was what was on so many people’s “style must have lists.” But a few years ago, I realized that I don’t even like wearing tees most of the time and only really use them as under layers. Also, white is not my best color as I suit ivory and beige more. so I whittled down my tees to just 6 - white, ivory, black, navy, grey, olive- and I it’s perfectly enough for weekly layering, sleeping, exercising, etc. so sometimes, “fantasy self” is not even fancy things, just things that don’t truly speak to you, and you’re right- knowing that comes from knowing who you are.
The biggest revelation I've had in this whole process is that the only "wardrobe essentials" are what you love wearing and what work for your lifestyle. Period, the end.
I heard 50k and was shocked when I realized your subscriber count - as a passive subscriber I am shocked you aren't in 300k+ or half a million! Your quality of content is so nice and you are such a great content creator.
This video is so timely for me. I keep thinking I need to buy more clothes but none of them are really needed for my lifestyle! So refreshing to hear we don’t need to fit what society tells us to wear. I’m all about comfort. Thanks for a great video!
I was literally watching this and thinking ‘Uh, I need that blazer!’ Lol. And then I wad like ‘No you don’t!’ It’s a struggle, sister. I am doing a low buy this year and it’s not easy but it’s so inspiring to see your videos. Thank you!!
It’s always fun to watch (myself and others) finally getting rid of those things you just KNOW you’ll never wear but you’re keeping as a what-if. It’s so oddly liberating when you can let that go.
Oh man. This video resonated big-time, esp when you got to the part about the black boots that cost a lot but mostly stayed in the box. Oof. I've done the same thing. I still have a pair of Aquatalia black booties that I've had for at least 10 years, I bought them bc I was really into Kate Middleton's style at the time and she had the same pair...and I've barely worn them! Like maybe less than 10 times... 😬 whereas I bought a pair of La Canadienne tall black boots in 2013, which I still have and that I've worn to death, and those boots were worth the money.
Thank you so much for this honest video! I'm working on the same decluttering of fantasy self... she is very classy and polished, looks good in jewel tones, pink and white, loves officewear, and rocks blazers, feminine cardigans as well as sexy colorful sportswear. The real me is active and practical, always hands on dough/paint/potting mix, prefers black, navy and grey, hates layering and wears a pair of black joggers at the gym every time. So there is definitely still some work to do!
How about storing away the duplicates (like anine bing shirts and blazers) and shopping your own closet two years later? Just as Signe (from Useless) would say.
I am decluttering of most of the black items that I own. In getting older my hair has gotten very light and my complexion has changed and I just do not look good in black anymore. I’m slowly replacing with navy and gray which look much better on me. I have a jeans issue too, but I wear them literally everyday so I’m just gonna keep them for now.
I feel that way too. And even to have a sort of predictability to my wadrobe and the 'things' in my life whilst still not being boring. I think it requires a lot of discipline and intentionality to make sure each piece you add is something you love and will use till it's end as joyfully as you did when you first bought it.
I also never gravitate towards dresses. It looks so great on others, but just not for me :) I also don't really care for color or variety. To some people that's boring, and that's ok 😊 I like boring
It’s so funny that my fantasy self is your true self. I love and wear my slip dresses, color, blazer, button ups. My style formula is a dress with blazers. I love your style which is the black t shirts and jeans which I keep buying but never wear. I never reach for them but I keep buying therm because I want that style, but the truth is I never am really as comfortable than when I throw own a slip dress or a a patterned color dress and a black blazer or long cardigan. I have just started accepting this and starting to pack away my jeans and tshirts . It’s hard to let go of that fantasy self. Ironically, trying minimalism caused me to confused the movement with a certain type of clothes. A small wardrobe on you tube really helped clarify this. Thanks for a great video.
Three years ago, I retired from an office job where I wore a lot of dressier items. I decluttered most of the items but I hung onto the "just incase" for weddings, receptions, etc. (which hasn't happened). But what do you do once you get rid of these items, and have an event that you need something a little more formal than black trousers and a tee? You can see I'm still in the fantasy life stage. I was that gal that purchased clothing thinking my life would somehow become more exciting because I own a certain style of clothing...never happened! I love my casual lifestyle, just miss dressing up.
I love how you talk about not having to chase the exact t-shirt/shoe/sweater etc. to take inspiration from someone else’s style! I really need to work on that!!!
This was so encouraging....I'm having to learn to accept that my life doesn't require so many of these supposed 'basics'. I don't wear button up shirts, dresses (except a couple in summer), or blazers and like you don't wear ' beige'/ cream...I don't wear black generally. Only my motto jacket...but I don't like black pants or jeans. Weird how I'm somewhat 'conditioned' to think that just wearing jeans and t- shirts is somehow not 'good enough' and somehow I should be 'something else' that I'm not...so I'm glad I'm now aware and accepting myself and my life as it really is.
Her or him or they. My enby heart was double beating. Love a good declutter and I am so happy you want to know yourself more and cater to your personal style and life. You are amazing so go go go be you😍👌🏼🙏🏻
Your videos have been like therapy for me I myself got in debt due to shopping highs . And I’m finally tired of seeing so much clothes eating my house alive ! Haha also I love the way tan blazers look on others but not myself lol so I made sure I only ordered a blk and a white now that I’m creating my capsule wardrobe
The last pieces of fantasy self that I got rid of: - button-ups, I have only several colorful ones left because I wear them as open layer like cardigans :p - plain white tops (the plain white bottoms have been a thing of the past for 5 years already.) because they're too easy to stain xD - the little black dress because I just never choose that option when I would need one xD I prefer my print or colorful dresses
So true.. I also get caught up in think that I need certain things in my wardrobe like button ups or in my particular case a leather jacket(that doesn't suit me at all) . And then I forget what I ACTUALLY like to wear and what makes me feel excited without having seen it on someone on TH-cam or wherever first and then thinking that I need that. Btw blue looks very beautiful on you like the blue in your hoodie
I've been slowly and systematically decluttering my wardrobe. I did a major downsizing after I retired and got rid of lots of dressy work clothes. I now love wearing jeans, button up tops, t shirts, and comfortable footwear. I purchased my first blazers while on Covid lockdown. Most I bought at vintage and thrift shops and one I bought on major sale brand new. I want to wear blazers and think that I will once we can actually go out more often. At least I hope I do. I don't want them to be my fantasy self because they look good on me and I do like them. I admire you and all of the other influencers that are more "slow fashion" oriented. I don't watch any who do haul videos. Keep up the good content.
Last year I reorganised my closet really well. But I realize, that there could be far less of garments I hardly wear. But I realize as well, that probably some of my clothes can go in and "later" vox/bag, because life is continually changing. My oldest (disabled) son will move out soon, I will take more responsibility at work, all my children become more and more independent, I will do more sports, travelling, a new hobby maybe... So I could be sad later on, if I donate too much which doesn't suit my lifestyle NOW. BUT I also declutterd lots of stuff which I will never feel perfect in, no matter how expensive they have been ore how beautiful they are. It's a process, but too often in my life I declutterd too many stuff! (For example I declutterd sooo many kitchen items, plates or towels... BEFORE I had children! Then I got four wonderful kids and needed all that stuff back 🙈 - luckily my mother in law was a hoarder 🤣😜)
I got rid of the majority of my dresses, but now I am totally regretting it being 5 months pregnant and pants are crap 😅 Really enjoyed this video though! Thank you for sharing your process
This is your best video so far!! I could totally relate to this. When I started to shop more second hand, I made a lot of purchases to my fantasy self. And it turned out it was all a waste of money, because I never wore them. Straight leg jeans with a high waist is a good example of things that look awful on me, and I have gotten rid of. And blazers..hahaha! I never ever wear them. But it was a learning lesson,I now know my true style, and hopefully will avoid buying stuff I do not even really like.
I very much relate to shopping for that fantasy self or to complete an essentials list that aren’t really my essentials after all. I’ve decluttered a lot over the past year since covid but now I’m at a point where I don’t want to get rid of things until life goes back to “normal”. I might be working remotely until December of 2021 and I’m also pregnant so I will reevaluate my summer wardrobe after I give birth and see where I am with my body/style and same with work tops and blazers once I return to the office. In the meantime, I’m on a low buy, making myself wear what I own and barely used and trying to be intentional and realistic with what I really need. One thing that has helped me is adding things I want to a Pinterest board. I review the board every month or so and there’s a ton that I end up deleting and I think to myself how much money I would have wasted had I purchased all these things I was so sure I wanted but later I end up realizing I don’t really need them or like them really.
Congratulations Christina. Wow! you are so courageous to declutter that much and to share so much in public. I am sure you have and are still helping lots of people. I am also benefiting watching your videos because it keeps down my temptation to buy and has moved me to a very slow buy category. I have decluttered a whole house and moved to another state only with a car load of what I absolutely had to keep. It felt so liberating, and my closet is very small now. I am discovering how easy it is to get dressed at any time and still have fun with it. I only recently bought some necessities from a great Macy's sale to complete a capsule which was necessary due to moving to a different climate. Keep on making your videos. They are real therapy because of identifying with various parts of them.
Fantasy self 🤔 who knew i had one till now lol. I live in a very windy place, I also have way too many maxi sun dresses I'm not able to wear often, so one fav is enough so out goes the rest 👍
1. I love this inclusive Christina no matter how small the gesture. 2. I've let go of colors as well and patterns which means there went most of my blazers. I've also let go of blue jeans.😬 I found I'm my most comfortable self in black or grey pants.
Hands up to the button up shirt. I had a bunch of linen ones from J Jill - never worn. So cute, never worn. :( I am constantly decluttering as well - even if it's just one or two items a day. I still have too much. I don't even know what I have too much OF! I just have....too much. !!!!! One of the items of my fantasy self are these massive MASSIVE shawl-like scarves..like I'm going to be Lauren Bacall in a giant blanket wrapped around my neck. Never worn. Another one of my fantasy self declutters were these like Palm Beach-style beach/bathing suit cover-ups to wear lounging at the pool? What pool? I don't go to the pool. I go to the ocean and there I wear a pair of cut off jeans and a t-shirt. Who am I kidding. Apparently in my fantasy life, I'm quite the glamour-puss. Uh no. xoxo
I’ve decluttered clutch handbags. I never dress up and there is nowhere to go, even if I wanted to. It’s really great that u r peeling back the layers of your old mindsets, habits, finances etc...now. If u decide to have a child, if u think it’s hard to say, “no” to yourself for the things u want, wait until u have a kid. I’m 43, have 5 children, 22, 19, 17, 13 when I was 21 to 2 weeks before I turned 30. Got remarried at 36 and then at 41, had Baby #5 and my husband was 50. She just turned 2 on 2/12, and everything I wanted to buy for my other children when I was in my 20’s and couldn’t afford it, I want to buy for my 2 year old. There r advantages to having a child later in life. One, being that you r older, more stable, my husband’s done climbing the corporate ladder, our other children from previous marriages r older, working and get the “divorce perks” of 2 birthdays, 2 Christmas’s etc...and we just have more money. So now I need to get a grip on myself. Watching u has given me inspiration to not only keep what I buy for myself in check, which isn’t much, but what I buy for my 2 year old. Thanks for sharing your journey and process w/all of us.
For me it’s been work clothes. We have national and international meetings and I think it’s a bit of a fashion show. I realize now that I view it kind of like a wedding- an excuse to get something new. Now I plan to keep pieces I actually use and like. Like you I have a newfound perspective of what that is. And what I tended to pick was more about who I was with rather than it being authentically me. Done!
Thank you so much for this video. I really needed to see this today. For the first time in the new year I went “shopping” for a belt because all of mine are the wrong size. I didn’t find one but I did grab an armful of things and walked around the store for a half hour before aborting the mission and trying to remind myself that the stuff was not what I came for... and was not going to make me happy when I got home.... arg! So hard. Seeing this video really helps me to feel I made the right decision in turning around and reflecting before mindlessly purchasing. Your content is excellent.
Very interesting video. I can totally recognize some of my behaviours... Rompers and one-piece outfits are totally something I would like to wear but can never really fit into. I'm tall and curvy so they never really fit right and I never really wear them in the end. Bought two of them and ended up giving them to good will. I also don't really wear fancy dress pants (I work in scrubs 100% of the time). I just prefer to wear a dress or nicer jeans and pair them with something like a blazer, a nice button-down or a chic top. In the summer I also prefer dresses (especially knee-length or midi-length). They always make me feel comfortable and feminine and they kind of always look effortlessly chic. Shorts are sexy and cute on a lot of people but always make me feel self-conscious and uncomfortable so I just decided I wouldn't wear them. I litteraly do not own a pair now and I don't miss having them. I guess when you're in your late twenties or thirties, you kind of figure out what your own style is and what your body looks good in and you start playing the game by your own rules. In the end, not all the styles that we like fit our personality or lifestyle or body type and that's ok. Maybe it's a part of growing up and figuring out who we are?
GORGEOUS ladies who don't wear color UNITE! YASS! I seriously have no color whatsoever in my wardrobe. However, I adore color and try to soak it up in nature and all kinds of art. I love it in life, just not on my body :)
I feel you on the bike shorts! I use mine for wearing under dresses and layering when it's cold. The sometimes that I pull them out to actually wear I get very uncomfortable!
Well done! It seems like you've really had a mindset shift? I feel the same way, I've been decluttering over time and my "fantasy self" is on her way out of the door. It's freeing! Starting to accept my real self a bit more as a result :)
wow. I am currently going minimal as well and I am also guilty of following other people's style. I have gotten rid of over 150 clothing pieces and I am down to 75. Out of those 75 I only wear about 30 pieces, not including my workout attire. I am actually doing a clearout while I am watching this and I think I'm going to let more go tonight.
Everything that doesn't fit my new life. I used to live in the city and loved fancy coats, shoes, dresses etc. walking down the street felt like a runway, lol. Now I live in the countryside and I got a dog. My life is so different. Cozy, practical clothes are all I wear now. I LOVED the way you spoke about your 'fantasy self' in this video, it so resonated with how I've struggled to let go of my old life. I was hanging on to things because they made me feel connected to a previous me, but I will never wear them again and it's silly to hold on. Thanks for the inspo, can't wait for more fantasy self declutters! ❤️
What a great declutter! I think we can all relate to this kind of decluttering journey. The idea of fantasy self and tracking what we wear will reallllly help with letting go of those things we just hold onto but NEVER end up wearing. Loved this video so much
Hello from fellow Torontonian! That was brutal, lol! But I agree with decluttering fantasy items. My lifestyle changed over the past 10 years and I have perfectly good items I used to wear regularly. I still love them and they fit my fashion style but I haven't wear them for many years because they do not fit my lifestyle anymore. Seeing you declutter your beautiful fantasy items is giving me a push to declutter mine. The only thing I won't declutter are duplicates of things I actally still wear. I consider them replacements.
I've been following your declutters since 2019 and you've made so much progress! It's fun to watch your style identity evolve. Your closet looks exactly like YOUR style now. Congrats!
I love the bikeshorts not essentially as a stylish fashion piece but more of a work from home or quick run to the supermarket or my afternoon walk wear.
"or they" immediately subscribed and liked bc its the little things that are so simple and easy but most ppl don't even put in the effort so to see someone who is just casually and unexpectedly inclusive causes giddy joy to bubble out of my chest
I've gotten rid of a lot of my 'fantasy self." Down to 90 pieces (not including workout, sleep wear, or underwear). It's still a bit of clothing but I'm happy with it. I just moved to a new state so I'm sure it will change over this year.
Great insights! I TOTALLY have to declutter my fantasy wardrobe as well. I love your style, it's my ACTUAL style! My fantasy style is a bit colorful and more girly, which was my style in NYC (when I lived there). But since I'm not going back there, I don't need the majority of those clothes anymore.
So happy to hear I'm not the only one with a "fantasy self"!!! I've bought dresses I never wear and button ups I don't wear cause I don't find them comfortable!! The last "fantasy self" item I wanted to purchase was a high waste straight leg jeans to fit in my idea of classic minimalist style...but I'm a petite woman and they looked aweful on me so I had the clear mind too send them back!! Yep I'm learning!! 🙋🏻♀️
I had to get rid of so many millennial pink/salmon things that I bought for my fantasy self. And super light grey. Those colours/shades just look bad on me but for whatever reason I’m so attracted to them.
Love how you are so honest! You inspire me to face my pretensions as well. I gave up button ups a long time ago. I never found them to be comfortable and while others look so classic wearing them, I just look like I should be serving drinks and appies at a restaurant. 😅
Christina this is a fantastic video. You hit on so many stumbling blocks that we go through while finding our true selves, our true style - influenced by what others are doing, the original cost of things, the original lust for something, status... my God the list goes on. You are really digging deep and your honesty in your presentation is inspirational. I am going to my closet now and seeing what's there from my fantasy self. I have a feeling there is going to be a lot from a past version of myself that I'm clinging to having not introduced myself to my current self. Thank you for this.
Thanks for being real. I get so frustrated with myself for holding on to things prob a couple years more than I should. But it’s a long slow detox and I tell myself I am a work in progress. Thanks for reminding me to be kind to myself
OH MY GOODNESS ME TOO with the button ups! I always FEEEEEEL like I should have them but at this very moment I am not even sure why anymore and you saying that is so freeeeing! I have like 3 that I actually wear and LOVE they are vintage and soft and cute so after this video I an ousting ALL the others!
I am so happy to see your videos, they helped me a lot, it`s my first month of battling shopping addiction, I need a lot of motivation. Seeing you makes me think that I can do it too.
I felt the same for bike shorts! Thy were soo trendy and I bought a pair from Aritzia. I realized I would never be caught dead in public wearing those because they make me feel very self conscious and they also do not compliment my body shape... so I only wear mine at home now for loungewear lol. Also I realized that I don't wear beige pants either! I sit on public transit every day and I'm paranoid of staining white or cream coloured pants/skirts.... I have a few sitting in my closet I'm too scared to get dirty so I don't wear them
omg I will take care of your black cigarette pant problem I need a new pair as mine no longer fit lol LOVED this video - such a great perspective of letting go of the fantasy self!
Yess!! Declutter at your own pace! There’s no rush. Minimalism is whatever you make it for yourself, it’s not having the bare minimum of everything. I am so here for your journey and you’re doing amazing! I’ve recently decluttered patterned shirts. I have too many that I never wear and that never go with anything. My fantasy self loves patterns (tops and yikes... bottoms too) but my fantasy self doesn’t realize you can just admire something and you don’t need to buy it to do that 😅😅 still working on it but I’m trying to build up non patterned tops to get my wardrobe to be what I actually would like it to be instead of being “stuck” with all my patterns that can only be worn with one other clothing piece or it’ll clash 😆
My fantasy self was the sleek minimalist monochromatic thing. Good Lord, was I dying on the inside for so many years with that. Now I have fun with my florals, flowy and stretchy fabrics, and many colors, and most importantly...nothing that restricts my movements. It's a mix of hippie, Southern church girl, old lady...I don't know 😆
I’ve let go of my fantasy self because the things I like simply don’t fit my life style or work wardrobe...it still bothers me because I feel like I’m not fully expressing who I am and I do enjoy clothing. I’m trying to find different ways to get my fix such as through accessories. Maybe one day I’ll be living that life that enables me to wear all the fun things I see(and used to buy)
Thanks so much for this video! I have never even thought this way about dressing for my fantasy self. But you nailed it, and now that I’m aware of it, it can help me declutter and get rid of the things that I keep buying but never wear.
I am also wearing the same colors and happy with it..I have a purple coat that I never wear and need to declutter.. usualy I declatter stuff from my closet to the higher shelf and next time it will move from there to the 2nd hand shop or to a friend.
I agree with you on Acne boots... also totally influenced purchase. I don't think they are the most flattering style, but they have been one of my most practical purchases in the past couple of years. They come with me on every travel and almost every city walk. But I wish they were more tapered at the ankle, they just make my feet look so massive. I love how durable Acne boots are. I have another regret though, bought a pair of beautiful black mansour gavriel boots in black lambskin.... I know they would be fragile. I am literally so scared to scuff them and only wore these 3-4 times but can't declutter...
I feel like this video is talking right at me.....the button up shirts....the insane number of black blazers....so many "someday" items in my closet that I'm terrified to let go of and that I'll regret letting go of. I feel like I need to watch this on repeat because I totally relate to trying to be "that girl". Love your perspective on shifting your mindset and on having things that reflect it. It's hard for me to let go of my clothes, but going to keep trying.
This video is so timely. I have a big garbage bag of things for the thrift store and I have a whole bunch of meh things I just need to get rid of that I no longer wear. You are right, if I get something and wear it consistently it was a good purchase if not why am I hanging on it - its a sunk cost. I just feel so guilty but I am learning to let go of that feeling and I think being less overwhelmed with my stuff will help.
i used to think that i needed color in my wardrobe for "professional" occasions in the university and for work because i thought (maybe somebody told me?) i couldn't go all black. but honestly i love it and feel the best in black outfits which really helps when you want to be your best self. therefore the beige trousers need to go!
I wish we were the same size! I LOVE those aritzia only slip dresses! 😍😍😍 I only have one, and always wear it, and don’t think I need another. BUT STILL! Haha. I think I’m gonna spring for it in black.
You are so genuine. I feel you are able to articulate so well the attachment to clothes so many of us have, for so may reasons. I am late to coming to decluttering, though I have desired to for so long. You motivate me and should be proud of yourself. Thanks truly Kirsten
thank you for being honest (with yourself). i let go of 2 alexander wang bags i just wanted because some influencer had them. at least i bought them used! they were too big and heavy for me.
I love how authentic you are and the process how you changed. It's really inspiring and motivating. I hope to be in that place some day where you are right now :) Thank you for sharing
Great video Christina. What's wrong with me, I was not like this. Now I buy something and the next day I want something else to "complete" my closet., that seems to never be complete...
Less than 2 minutes in... I already know I'm going to like this advice. You're already commenting to a mindset that I have tried to break from, but I didn't know how to describe. Thank you!
After watching your video where you mentioned the clothing spreadsheet, I decided to create one for my wardrobe (I'm also a nerd and LOVE a spreadsheet). I update it it everyday with what I have worn and it is really interesting to see what pieces I actually wear vs what I thought I wore. I completely agree that I've also got a few pieces that belong to my fantasy self and will be decluttering these over the coming year! Thanks for your videos :)
This video is 100% relatable to me! When I first got started in exploring my style a couple years ago, I was influenced left and right to buy things that other people would say are a "staple", or that I thought were cool at the time and would ensure that I can "fit in" in some way. The only staples I have now are 1 white t-shirt, 2 black t-shirts, a grey tank top and one grey athletic top that's very comfortable. I also have one green button-up shirt, but none in either black or white. My style choices are more colorful than what other minimalist influencers would typically go for, but I've since learned to accept and be okay with that. Thank you for sharing your thought process on these items you're donating, Christina. Excited to see more content like this soon :)
I totally get your "same, but different" thing. I also have a lot of black trousers, jeans, and blazers. I also love colourful suits (which add to my blazer and trouser collection).
You are the most honest you tuber I think I've ever watched! It's refreshing and also slightly uncomfortable as I recognise some of my own habits/thoughts in what you say! X
I’ve been letting go of all my grey and black pieces. Some are lovely quality but I finally realised they don’t suit my skin tone at all. The next things to go will be my dresses. I wear jeans and tunic tops every day so I have some that have only been worn twice. I used to get ‘dressed up’ to do craft fairs but I haven’t done anything since the pandemic so getting ‘dressed up’ can go
I really liked this kind of decluttering videos. They are somehow helping me to to realize that whole Idea of self fantasy and how it affects my buying decisions. Thank you for making this video
Button up shirts were something I felt I needed to own but then didn't really like wearing them. I only own a light blue Levi's button up now and it's so versatile. I have more blazers to declutter too... it just doesn't reflect my style.
hard same on buttons downs, i just decluttered a few of mine, too. i reach for a boxy tee way more often. realistically i'd rather be comfortable in something with stretch.
What are some fantasy self bits you’ve let go of recently?
I got rid of sheath dresses, party dresses, formal dresses, heels, boots with heels. 2020 November I donated 16 garbage bags worth of clothes, shoes. Funny thing is I have never worked in an office. I ran a home daycare for 14 years and retired three years ago. My fantasy self was a corporate lady and someone who had tons of events to go to. 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈
I need to ponder this!!
Color lol
Skirts! ☺️
My fantasy J.Crew chambray/chunky sparkly costume jewelry/Minnie pants/ballet flats self 😜
Yes, me too!!!
capsule wardrobe definitely helps love your stuff
I decluttered most of my tops with prints, patterns and decor, I realized that I’m a solid color person and that suits me better.
That is a huge realization! I love it!
yes! i finally realized 2021 that there just is not a trenchcoat that flatters me in this world. parkas all the way!!
Thank you!!
You’re doing amazing! I’ve TOTALLY had the same dialogue you shared - recognizing it is huge!
It’s always fun to watch (myself and others) finally getting rid of those things you just KNOW you’ll never wear but you’re keeping as a what-if. It’s so oddly liberating when you can let that go.
It really is!
you are so right.
"It could add a lot to someone's wardrobe, it just hasn't added much to mine."
Letting go of our fantasy selves, to pave way for our comfortable selves.
I’m always down for comfies in all forms!
Yas for some more declutter. I have such a deep desire to let go and simplify more and more and more! ❤️
Yesss me too. It’s so nice to have less to worry about in life
I feel that way too. And even to have a sort of predictability to my wadrobe and the 'things' in my life whilst still not being boring. I think it requires a lot of discipline and intentionality to make sure each piece you add is something you love and will use till it's end as joyfully as you did when you first bought it.
You are really transforming to a real self. Well done Christina
I also never gravitate towards dresses. It looks so great on others, but just not for me :) I also don't really care for color or variety. To some people that's boring, and that's ok 😊 I like boring
If boring stands for classic and eclectic I'm all the way in.
My shirts are gray, white and black v neck t shirts and I don't care anymore!😊🤪🤗
You read me in this video! Button Downs, boots, jeans, same but different.. color I figured out I needed to let go of a while ago!
I hear you, I feel very similar. So glad to have found this video and realize that what I’m wearing is perfectly fine.
Her or him or they. My enby heart was double beating. Love a good declutter and I am so happy you want to know yourself more and cater to your personal style and life. You are amazing so go go go be you😍👌🏼🙏🏻
White pants cream pants bc they are coffee magnets! Dress heels, skirts, and I’m headed to go cull the blazer stache! I only wear one anyways!
The last pieces of fantasy self that I got rid of:
- button-ups, I have only several colorful ones left because I wear them as open layer like cardigans :p
- plain white tops (the plain white bottoms have been a thing of the past for 5 years already.) because they're too easy to stain xD
- the little black dress because I just never choose that option when I would need one xD I prefer my print or colorful dresses
Wow! That troublesome fantasy self has gotten me into some purchases that surely don’t match my real lifestyle. You’re not alone in this discovery!
🥰🥰🥰
Good for you to realize your style and let go of the pieces that are not, at such a young age...I’m just realizing this at 50!
Me too Sandi. I’m appreciating 50 because I’m accepting me and what I like.
You are a lovely Winter, and black and white are your natural colors, and lookie-that's what you are naturally gravitating to after all... 💖
I also love color, I just don’t love wearing it (small exception is red)! But I discovered that I quite like to have some color in home decor :)
Well done!
Loved this video so much
❤️❤️ it honestly helps me get real with myself SO much!
Yayyy TO!
That’s AMAZING!
So proud of your growth. I hope you truly realize the change in you. Wow! What you are wearing in this video is A+ and it’s totally you.
Seeing you makes me think that I can do it too.
you can do it! give it time
Love the reflection & thoughtfulness of each item you are getting rid & why they are parting your wardrobe
I love declutters. You did a good job explaining why you’re getting rid of these :)
I love the honesty of this video, great work! I’ve never been a dress/skirt person and always worry about not looking “feminine” enough.
"Fantasy Self" Lightbulb moment! A good 1/3 of my wardrobe flashed in my head. Time for a serious declutter. Thank you for sharing your journey.
I have a few sitting in my closet I'm too scared to get dirty so I don't wear them
omg I will take care of your black cigarette pant problem I need a new pair as mine no longer fit lol LOVED this video - such a great perspective of letting go of the fantasy self!
when you notice fashion inspirations of yours who are also their - each other's - fashion inspirations 💙😃✨
My fantasy self loves patterns (tops and yikes... bottoms too) but my fantasy self doesn’t realize you can just admire something and you don’t need to buy it to do that 😅😅
still working on it but I’m trying to build up non patterned tops to get my wardrobe to be what I actually would like it to be instead of being “stuck” with all my patterns that can only be worn with one other clothing piece or it’ll clash 😆
Omg, you are speaking to me. I am in the process of decluttering my fantasy self.
i used to think that i needed color in my wardrobe for "professional" occasions in the university and for work because i thought (maybe somebody told me?) i couldn't go all black. but honestly i love it and feel the best in black outfits which really helps when you want to be your best self. therefore the beige trousers need to go!
Me too!
Thank you being vulnerable. Your commentary really helps me think.
I love how authentic you are and the process how you changed. It's really inspiring and motivating. I hope to be in that place some day where you are right now :) Thank you for sharing
That is exactly my problem and why I am on debt - fantasy self! Thank you for being open and honest about this!
I used to get ‘dressed up’ to do craft fairs but I haven’t done anything since the pandemic so getting ‘dressed up’ can go
This makes me want to get rid of everything! But all in moderation... one step at a time!
Thank you for sharing your thought process. I need to do this. I am off to watch your 90 day log one.
Bikeshorts are active wear, I use them to do pilates just as leggings or sweatpants.
That’s pretty much the only way I’d wear them too!
hard same on buttons downs, i just decluttered a few of mine, too. i reach for a boxy tee way more often. realistically i'd rather be comfortable in something with stretch.
