First time I heard this was back in the day when I was watching 28 Days Later when it came out. That's how I found out about this band and this genre of music. Probably my favorite track of theirs and also one of my favorite live concerts.

As someone who lives in Vancouver, the song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of East Hastings

From 8:28 to 8:50 in the song ( 10:05 in the video) there's a very quiet vocal part in the background. That part is new for the CD version of the album, and not present on the vinyl version (along with a LOT of other differences).

F#A#∞, interesting choice. If I were to pick anything from Godspeed You! that would be cool for Halloween, this album would be it. The thing about F#, and the thing that makes it one of my favorite albums of all time, is the atmosphere. And I can tell you're more into the more energetic side of music as a whole (Your favorite aspects of various Godspeed tracks being the active energetic sections), I can understand that. F# is not a very loud album, it utilizes silence as an instrument, and is meant to be enjoyed all in one session. In all my listens of F# I have very rarely just picked out a song and went through it, it was always an all or nothing type deal. What that means though, is you're only really getting a segment of what makes this experience what this album is.
F# loves to meander, it loves to take you on little side paths, always taking the longest route it possible can to let you really take in your surroundings, it doesn't talk much, not out of some desire to leave you barren on content, but more so to make what it does say more impactful. F# is not minimalistic in the sense that it doesn't have a lot, more so it's geared towards the quiet side of music, building the environment and sound it wants to build slowly but steadily. And that's rather unfortunate for a music review channel LOL, the material you can review with F# is more so about the atmosphere and what you personally feel or envision around you as you listen, and less about concrete music dynamics. And I know from a personal standpoint how hard it can be to really build an atmosphere or a landscape in your head when you're concentrating on the concrete aspects of the music. I can understand why this was suggested for the spooky month, it is very atmospheric, and me personally, I see dark and gloomy buildings, streets, and towers, all with a tinge of dust on top of it, but for it to truly work you would have to change up how you look at it.
The best possible way to experience F#A#∞ is to go in with no real expectations, not expecting any sort of beginning or end point, just floating along whatever landscape starts to build itself in your mind.
    ...
If it helps, drugs definitely enhance the experience.

I think I say this every GY!BE video, but they were a big favorite when I discovered them back in the 00s because they were the first post rock band I'd heard (back then it wasn't even called that), but eventually I gravitated towards other bands in the genre and then away from the genre in general. Haven't listened to this album in a good while because of that, but even back when I was listening to them I preferred their next album, Lift Your Skinny Fists... This certainly isn't a bad track, and I enjoyed it if just for the nostalgia. I do think it's a good selection for the week's theme. It's very eerie and unsettling... maybe more of a "psychological thriller" than, say, a slasher or more traditional horror film.

Such a great album. I got the vinyl about 15 years ago and opened it to look at the insert art along with the fattened penny (flattened by a train). I sealed it back up and it’s been sitting in my parents’ house since. I honestly enjoy the first and third tracks over this on (cd version). Thank you for listening

I really liked the atmosphere and was afraid to increase my volume because I thought there was going to be a jump scare. There were some creepy moments. Overall, I really liked it. I don't recall ever listening to Godspeed You! Black Emporor. But I've seen the name.

Love yr continued tackling of this band and they're admittedly difficult material
If I had one suggestion it'd be to watch live performances of their stuff, imo they're even better live and i dunno if you ever noticed or were told they're often using screwdrivers to play some of their guitar parts

Finally something from the first album :) I think it's different from all their other works because the songs change so much, and they use samples heavily. Other albums have more structured instrumental compositions while this one feels more like a collage or a collection of movie scenes with the screen turned off. It's barely coherent, neither it has any specific message for any particular track. When I listen to F♯ A♯ ∞ , it's more like being on a ship and slowly drifting past post-apocalyptic landscapes. It's on you whether to construct a narrative from these scenes or not - but you can't escape this kaleidoscope of impressionistic pictures they put you in.
About the message, though - GYBE are _very_ political, very far left (the anarchy gang), and very critical of the USA, capitalism, etc. in many ways. I didn't dive deep into in but I feel like Noam Chomsky's stance is what they might relate to. So yes, bitter, hostile sarcasm is what I hear in how they use all these samples.
One more thing: if somebody wants to hear a huge buildup with a huge payoff, try their song “Static” off their _Lift Your Skinny Fists_ album. This one could also easily be a soundtrack to Silent Hill or some other gnarly horror, one of the most visceral "scary" pieces of music I heard.

Proper comment, good job, now I don’t have to type this all out 😂 The only thing I will add, is that I think this song, and the album in general is a Lot more coherent if you listen to it from the beginning. Tbh I can’t believe this got recommended instead of dead flag blues

Interesting seeing this track come up today! I was actually on East Hastings yesterday, because the Rickshaw theatre is there, and that's where most of the metal bands play in Vancouver! (Ne Obliviscaris was amazing!) Not a place I like to spend much time, unless I'm on my way to the Rickshaw. A pretty sad place, covered in homeless people, and drug paraphernalia. One of my buddies accidentally stepped on a crack pipe when rounding a corner.

Going through your Godspeed reactions, some of the choices on which tracks to cover surprises me. Namely that only two of the tracks you have covered are from the albums "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists..." and "F#A#infinity". These are generally seen as their two strongest works (although I love most of what they've done throughout their career). If you do come back to Godspeed again I would highly recommend covering the tracks "Static" or "Moya" . "Sleep" is also one of their more notable tracks.
Love your videos and analysis, not just for Godspeed but for all the videos I've seen.

As far as GY!BE songs go, yeah, they're pretty much all long and drawn out. They have a few 6-minute tracks, and like two 4-minute-long tracks. They do use vocals a bit but it's always samples and spoken word. East Hastings is one of my favorites, Mladic, The Dead Flag Blues, and Motherfucker=Redeemer are probably my other top songs of theirs.

I think I've checked out all 4 of those except for Dead Flag Blues. So yeah, if those are the best they have to offer then I think I have a strong grasp on what they're doing. Though they find a bit of nuance to keep every experience different from the others.

@@CriticalReactions I'm not him, nor do i think it's their absolute worst. In fact it's pretty good, but some things about it have always bothered me. The intro is cool with the woman spreading her gospel and a thematic recall to the previous track on the album. The guitar melody and tone has always felt amateurish. From there the song builds quite nicely, but then the violins come in. This part is definetely the most goofy sounding. The melody sounds like a lullaby and the drums are dragging like crazy. That rock_1 simple groove is terribly generic and misplaced, then followed with a faint whisper of the melody, the second time we hear it. From there the song is great, but those back to back missteps have always annoyed me, since they drag an otherwise incredible album.
