- Bikepacking with Banjo, our adventurous Jack Russell Terrier, to one of our favourite bikepacking campsites in our neighbourhood while philosophising about what really matters in life. Can anything good come out of the Covid pandemic raging through the world? Does a Jack Russell Terrier have anything to teach us about how to live life? And what has biophilia to do with it all?

I watch a lot of cycling videos and especially like ones in Scandinavia, particularly Norway. It’s a wonderful place. I think Banjo 🐾 had the best time of all. I’d love to take my crabby Spaniel on all my cycling adventures but he cannot be picked up and I know he wouldn’t tolerate a trailer. A trainer evaluated him and told me to forget it. He isn’t appropriate. 🙁 He’s a rescue dog and has some issues. Maybe my next dog will work out. Be safe and keep pedaling 🚴and posting. 👍☮️🌞🚴♀️🐶❤️
I guess we’ve been lucky with Banjo in that regard, he’s basically put up with all our silliness as long as we let him try it out a bit first 😍🐶

What a lovely dog Banjo is. A long time ago we had also had a Jack Russell, called Albert and we tried taking him in a basket on our bike, but he howled and shrieked so much we had to abandon ‘dog-packing’!! By the way you make wonderful, inspirational videos!
Thanks for the kind words! Banjo was rather restless to begin with, he’d much rather run alongside the bike, not understanding that his little puppy legs wasn’t quite ready for that. He’ll do anything for a treat, so that helped us a lot when training him.

That is a sweet video and a great narrative. Plus I love Banjo and the surly;s. I have a troll myself and it is my favorite bike to ride. Your narration and the narrative is excellent. I rode across the US during the beginning of the pandemic from Vancouver WA to Portland Maine and it was very interesting to see how different people in different states looked at the pandemic very differently. I just binged all 3 of your videos over my morning coffee. Awesome and inspiring. Ive had a couple great trips to Norway, including some nice lake swims. Surly Bikes should sign your family up as ambassadors, your footage and their bikes tell quite a story. You ever get out to NW Montana in the US(I know you limit your flying), I'll take you exploring. It's very similar to Norway, maybe not as 'lush'. But big mountains, big rides, and big animals.

I went across the US in 2020 and avoided Montana because I am terrified of the grizzlies and the ones that I saw in the Tetons and Yellowstone scared me a lot but one of these days I have to come out and see the amazing Montana. It looks fabulous.

Hi just out of curiosity is the fat tyres on a peddle powered bike easier to deal with in all conditions and repairs very interested to know as your out there on the job kind regards Jessie ps i have a dog as well blue healer love your content 😊
Glad to hear you like the content! 😊🙏🏻 The fat tires help smooth out the bumps and coarse gravel. That’s extra important riding with Banjo. The wide tires of the fatbike is great on the trails and riding on compacted snow. On tarmac or smooth gravel, the fat tires are overkill 😊

How long days on the bike do you guys do when out with your dog?. I'm going to start bikepacking with my labrador but not sure how long he can stay in the trailer each day.
Apologies for a rather late answer! I think your best bet is to try out yourself and see what works for you and your dot. Starting with shorter trips and building up gradually is the best. Each dog is different. What I can say is that we try to get him down to sniff the ground at regular intervals, particularly near residential areas as they tend to have lots of interesting dog smells. Banjo is surely more interested in the smells than the vista 😄

You also mention that your a writer on the subject and I would love to read some of the published work on Forestry. Where can I find your publications and are they available in the UK. Hi Julian. Thanks for your comment and sorry for my late reply. It’s been a few busy days. Cool to hear that you work as a state forest manager. I have written a book about the state of the Norwegian forest, but it’s unfortunately only available in Norwegian. Many believe Norway is a country of endless wilderness, but the fact is that almost all our pristine forest is gone (there’s less than 0.5 percent left). Only about 1.6 percent of the forest has a structure and dynamic similar to pristine forest. So there’s loads of trees, but the different forest ecosystems are severely impacted and dominated by relatively young monocultures of trees.
@@BackwoodsBikepacking Its the same in the UK. Having woodland is good, but as you say, its not as good as it could be with the loss of the native old growth forest. Best wishes
Absolutely. It’s interesting to see how state forest workers in Denmark are actively distressing trees to speed up the process of establishing a more natural dynamic in selected forests. They haven’t got a lot of forest in Denmark, but they certainly have made an effort to get something done about the miserable state of the forests (from a biodiversity point of view, that is. We do of course also need forests to produce lumber). Here in Norway, it sometimes feels like the government is trying to do the opposite, speeding up the process of clear cutting the last areas that haven’t yet been clear cut :)
@@BackwoodsBikepacking Interesting. I thought Countries like Norway and Sweden where following more continuous cover principals and had been doing this for many years. UK has been clear-felling it woodlands for centuries but in recent years a move to Regeneration Felling and Continuous Cover Forestry has been the way to go for our native broadleaf woodland in particular. This has then started to improve the biodiversity within the woodland and has allowed nature to take its course through natural regeneration from the native seeds within the ancient woodland soils.
Cool, I didn't know that. About 93 % of the Norwegian forests being harvested are clear-felled. Ca 10 trees per ha are supposed to be left according to the environmental standard (the Norwegian PEFC standard, rather similar to the PFC, though with some differences), 5 per ha according to the law, but neither practice hardly counts as continuous cover forests. There is some lobbying going on to get a better balance between biodiversity and industry, but you know, money talks. The irony is that heterogenous forests seem to be more resilient to the negative effects of climate change than the extreme monocultures of planted spruce in particular.

@@BackwoodsBikepacking I'm going to ride the Pacific coast this summer again! It's going to be epic, 23 years after ridding it the first time! The following spring I will ride to main! My goal is to bike pack the distance around the planet! And the circumference of the planet is $24,901 Miles! I have $7,400 to go! So that's my personal goal!!

Is that a Carradice Camper with the side pockets removed up front?
Yes, you’re absolutely right! 😄👍 We removed the side pockets on the bag to make it fit drop bars a little better.
@@BackwoodsBikepacking Been thinking to do the same for a while but I’ve never be brave enough. 👏👏👏
Removing the pockets has so far not had an impact on the fabric of the main compartment, so though I can’t guarantee that it’s going to go well, I reckon you’ll be fine. We used a seam ripper to remove the stitches. If the bag is old, the fabric behind the pockets will be darker than the rest of the bag.

Thanks! The tent is a GoLite Shangri-La 5. They are unfortunately out of business, so I guess Mountain Laurel Designs different mids are what comes closest.

Ha-ha, didn’t think the video could come through as that. You know, as a biologist, it saddens me to see outdoor people that can’t see how our way of life slowly is degrading our planet. That’s science. What we chose to do about it, well, that’s politics. The gear comment is absolutely spot on. I’m painfully aware of how disconnected we humans have become from nature, even when we are outdoors 😄👍
@@BackwoodsBikepacking I actually don't take issue with the content, just the bait and switch. The title of the video had very little to do with the video itself, which was just background to a sustainability lecture. As far as contradictions, go everyone's a hypocrite. We're all guilty of saying one thing in doing another. Cool dog though!
@@kb1jki1 I appreciate that you take your time to comment, but I kind of have a feeling that this might have more to do with your own expectations than anything else when you use a term like «bait and switch». I can understand that you didn’t expect to hear any pocket philosophy from the video title itself, a title can only say so much anyway, but I believe I clearly stated what you might expect from the video in the video description. The video features bikepacking with Banjo from start to end, but bikepacking to me is so much more than just the act of riding a bicycle and sleeping outside. Some of that is what I wanted to convey in the narrating. Anyway, thanks again for commenting!
@@BackwoodsBikepacking Of course it has everything to do with my expectations. I support everything that you said except for the title of the video. I expected a dog bikepacking, but got a virtuous lecture and it was incongruent with what was on display. That's not a "paradox".
I can follow your critique to a certain extent, but still: The video features bikepacking with Banjo from start to end. My pocket philosophical «rant» is directly connected to the bikepacking trip. May I kindly suggest reading the description of videos in the future? As I wrote earlier, a title can only say so much and will always raise different expectations in different people. Cheers!
