4 days bikepacking the wild west of Denmark
Some say the best camera is the camera you have with you. I might argue that it’s more about the lens, especially if we are talking video, and not the least if we are talking about filming bikepacking movies handheld, on the go.
But as my wife Becky and I were at the Larvik Ferry port in Norway waiting to get onboard the ferry, I realized I had the wrong lens on my Fujifilm XT-3 camera. Now what? - iPhone XR to the rescue. The next four days I filmed with my iPhone as we were cycling with our loaded Surly bikes through some of the wildest places Denmark has on offer on the west coast of Jutland, mixing it up with my Fujifilm XE4 and XT-3 for stills photography.

Bikepacking and snowshoeing to the wildest place
มุมมอง 3.1K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Back in the 90s, I had a few years as a triathlete. Well, my swimming was so poor compared to my cycling and running abilities that I actually enjoyed duathlons more. This morning, I was on my way on a rather special duathlon, involving a fatbike, snowshoes, a tent and a sleeping bag. The early bird gets the worm, the saying goes. Well, this bird wasn’t searching for a worm, but for the wild. M...
3 days bikepacking my local backwoods in autumn
มุมมอง 7Kปีที่แล้ว
Bikepacking my local backwoods in Norway with my pal Sverre in autumn, pondering about local adventures, camp fires and calm while we enjoy one of the last bikepacking trips of the season. How well do you really know your own backyard? If you look at the map, how many white spots have you yet to discover? How many of the lakes or rivers have you swum in, paddled on or fished in? How many of the...
6 days bikepacking in Telemark
มุมมอง 94Kปีที่แล้ว
Bikepacking along the Telemark canal, or Telemarkskanalen, as it is known in Norway, riding for a total of 6 days in Telemark. In late summer 2021, I had somehow convinced my editors at a newspaper magazine that it would be a good idea to write an article about riding the Telemark Canal, the more than hundred year old waterway linking the coast of southern Norway with the interior of Telemark c...
The Ride Back: Bikepacking 714 km in less than 48 hours
มุมมอง 52K2 ปีที่แล้ว
One day, I found an old map with a 700 kilometer long cycle route from my home in Oslo to Copenhagen. I remembered making the route as a young teenager, 30 years ago, dreaming about doing the ride in less than 48 hours. I never did it. I’m no stranger to the joys of bikepacking: The campsites, the sunsets, the wind in your face, the sound of the sea, the shifting seasons, the campfires. Still, ...
The sub-24 hour bikepacking movie challenge
มุมมอง 11K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The short bikepacking overnighter, this time with a little challenge. There’s no denying, I love the short, local overnighters, regardless whether you call them S24Os (sub-24 hour Overnighter), as Grant Petersen from Rivendell Bicycle Works, or microadventures, as round the world bicycle adventurer Alastair Humphreys call them. Short enough to squeeze in between weekdays, long enough to give yo...
6 days bikepacking across Denmark with our dog: Denmarks wild side
มุมมอง 41K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Follow along as we cycle coast to coast on a bikepacking journey across Denmark in search of Denmarks wild side with our Jack Russell terrier, Banjo the adventure puppy. Now, you might wonder, why leave the forests and mountains of Norway behind to ride bikes in Denmark? A whopping sixty percent of Denmark is made up of farmland. Only a minuscule 13 percent of Denmark is covered by forest. In o...
Winter bikepacking to a mountain peak: A fatbike adventure on snow
มุมมอง 22K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Can you bikepack to a snowy mountain peak on a fatbike? I don’t know what I would have done without the bike. The bike is my freedom machine. And the bike that gives me the most freedom, is hands down the fatbike. What other bike enables me to ride almost anywhere I want? Though, even the fatbike has its limits. You can’t just ride anywhere. Well, actually, under certain conditions, you can. At...
10 days bikepacking to the mountains of Norway
มุมมอง 146K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Family summer vacation 2021. In our family, summer vacation means packing the tent and heading outdoors. This year, we wanted to go to the mountains. The question was just how to get there. With the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus spreading rapidly through Norway, public transport didn’t really tempt us. Living without a car, we would have to get there under our own steam. Our goal simply b...
Bikepacking with Banjo the adventure dog

Bikepacking with Banjo, our adventurous Jack Russell Terrier, to one of our favourite bikepacking campsites in our neighbourhood while philosophising about what really matters in life. Can anything good come out of the Covid pandemic raging through the world? Does a Jack Russell Terrier have anything to teach us about how to live life? And what has biophilia to do with it all? Three day bikepacking and snowshoeing photo reportage trip

#bikepacking #photography Join me and my youngest daughter on a three day bikepacking and snowshoeing photo reportage assignment in Norway searching the old growth forest for that perfect tree to save the article: That cliché tent landscape photograph of a tent glowing orange in the dark blue night. Winter bikepacking to a local mountain in Norway
มุมมอง 26K3 ปีที่แล้ว
#bikepacking #fatbike Join me bikepacking on my fatbike to a local mountain in winter while I'm pondering about why I bikepack. … Do you remember that feeling way back when you learned to ride a bike? I had just begun school when I got my first bike. Day in and day out I would sit on the seat and push myself along the roadside curb with my right foot. My strides became longer and longer until o...
Absolutely stunning video, thanks for making the danish landscape seem so magicial. Great storytelling and recounting
Dane here - love the vid 👏😊
Great to hear, glad you liked it! 😊🙏
Do you have the gpx track for the trip?
I would recommend just following the official cycling routes and improvise from there 😊
So calming! Always very happy to see new videos from you, keep living on the fringes and creating beautiful films!! Thanks :)
Thanks for your wonderful comment, glad you enjoyed the movie! 😊🙏🏻
You are literally in my backyard
You’ve got a great backyard 😄👍
So enjoyed your video. The narration is beautiful. I could close my eyes and see in my minds eye what you were describing. Loved it.
Thanks for you kind words, great to hear that you enjoyed it! 😊🙏
Beautiful imagery and storytelling!
Thanks, happy to hear you liked it! 😊🙏
All of your videos are amazing. You have such a way of renewing my inspiration for bike packing, wilderness, living on the fringe, beauty of the earth and much more! Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks for your kind words, happy to hear that the videos resonate with you 😊🙏
Really enjoyed this.
Glad you liked it 😊🙏
Beautiful work. Many thanks. I toured around around Horsens, in mid eastern Jutland, which I found interesting, although much less dramatic than the north west Jutland coast and the heaths as seen in the film The Promised Land (aka Bastarden in Danish). I, too, was repulsed by Denmark's intensive warehouse-based livestock farming. I was struck by the lack of birdsong in Danish woodland: is this due to the escaped mink? 25 million were put down during the Covid pandemic as it crossed species, supposedly. Many have escaped and live in the wild, where they are efficient killers. I wonder whether what you saw in the water was a mink, not an otter.
It could potentially been a mink, but it looked bigger than mink I’ve seen before and the otter is known to be breeding in the area. The mink can wreck havoc in bird colonies along the coast, but I don’t think they affect woodland birds much. Woodland patches with more or less older deciduous trees can be pretty rich with respect to bird life, but the plantations are the opposite.
I am always glad to see you posting new videos. This was as all the others...spectacular. Really love the content and as a fellow bicycle tourist, I really appreciate having the place all to myself. Cheers.
Thanks for all the kind words, happy to hear you enjoy the movies 😊🙏
Holy Molly, I recognised the stone at 1:29 I checked my pictures for confirmation. I camped there exactly on the 23.08.2023 it was the most astonishing place. Thank you for the nice throwback
That’s funny 😄 I’m not that surprised as there weren’t many obvious spots to camp on the steep hill sides of the lake. Great spot 😄
Nice and calm video ❤. Next time you come by, you can sleep on the beach in Denmark, you just can't pitch a tent or stay for more than 24 hour. So if you tarp camp and only stay 1 night you will be good
Thanks for the tip! I know “cowboy camping” is allowed, and have thought about doing it a lot, but haven’t done it yet. One day! 😊
What kind of boots were y’all wearing? Also, are those carhartt overalls?
Those are indeed Carhartt overalls. My better half are riding in a pair of Lundhags boots. I can’t recall the name, but they have unfortunately stopped making them. I’m wearing a pair of Duckfeet Faaborg. I totally love those boots, but after 7-8 years of use, the natural rubber sole unfortunately have become pretty sticky, so I have had to retire them. Wish I had a new pair, though 😄 Good bikepacking boots are super hard to find, I think. If I can’t get my hands (feet) on a new pair of Duckfeet, I think the nearest alternative is a pair of Redwing Moc toes.
@@BackwoodsBikepacking Nice! Yeah I usually wear my five tens when riding. But for work I wear a pair of Carolina mic toes
I honestly had no idea that this snake can live in winter ice snow 😮
Vipers spend the winters hidden away in the ground underneath the snow cover. In spring, they seek out warm patches of vegetation and can move over snow to get there. They’d rather not be in the snow if they can help it, though 😊
Loved it…very well narrated ❤
Thanks, glad you liked it 😊🙏🏻
Vest Danmark er stedet vi lever og elsker ❤ tak for den fin film. 👌
Jeg har også definitivt tabt mit hjerte til vestkysten 😊
Funny, I slept in that very same shelter you two set your tent into two years ago. Great video, thank you.
That’s fun to hear. Definitely a nice location for a camp site. Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
A very nice story with beautiful pictures! I cycled this area myself in August but your video opens my eyes for an additional, different sight!
Glad you liked it! 😊🙏🏻 Fun to hear you rode the same place this year. We actually had a ride a bit further south along the west coast in August this year. I have ridden more or less the exact same trip route and still had two completely unique experiences. I guess that’s what’s so nice about being in the outdoors. There’s always something new 😊
As usual a great visual record of a fantastic trip and really informative commentary. Thanks for sharing these special moments with us. I’m 72 now but still love getting out on my bike whenever I can. Like you I love cycling and the freedom it gives you to go anywhere. Keep up the great stories.
Thanks for you nice comment, really appreciated! And happy to hear you still enjoy cycling at 72 😊👍
Great story. Well done.
Thanks, happy to hear you liked it 😊🙏🏻
Thank you for your amazing content . Sharing your adventures with us is very appreciated. Love tour content and your outlook on life and our environment. The absolute best to your and your amazing family
Thank you so much for your kind comment, very appreciated! 😊🙏🏻
Fantastisk video! Og helt igennem uimodståelige billeder! 👌🎉😍
Det var hyggelig at høre, tusind tak! 😊🙏🏻
nice colour grading
Glad you liked 😊🙏🏻 It’s the result of me messing around in Lightroom Classic combined with Fujifilms Eterna film simulation (or maybe Classic Chrome, I use both).
The danish authorities allow cars on the Beach because it´s practical, and it doesn´t bother anyone, and norwegian ,german, swedish Maybe even a few British tourists like it that way😊
I’ll have to disagree 😄 Practical with respect to what?
@ they wouldnt be able to park anywhere else, and then they would not be there.
To be clear, I’m not talking about fishermen driving down to their boats in the harbor, they obviously have a good reason to drive to the beach, but I can see no good reason to permit leisure driving along the beach. It ruins the kind of peace and quiet you can’t find anywhere else in a land like Denmark.
And just for the record: I’m a Danish citizen and have lived in Denmark for a total of 15 years 😊
Nå okay,-
Delightful film. As always 🙂 Thank you for making it.
Thanks, happy to hear you enjoyed it 😊🙏🏻
Thank you for your brilliant video (and stills) it has just given me some much needed relaxation in our over busy world. Please keep doing your trips and allowing us into your world. 🙂
That’s really great to hear, thanks for the feedback! 😊🙏🏻
I was delighted to see you drop a new film😊. Always a welcome surprise. Your filming and narration really draws me in🚲!
Very happy to hear that, thanks for your kind words! 😊🙏🏻
Beautiful video...thanks for sharing those moments..
Thanks for the kind words! 😊
Wow! Off the hook. Any GPX maps that you would share?
Thanks, mate 😄🙏🏻 I usually don’t share our exact whereabouts, but basically it’s all about just following the official cycling routes from Hirtshals to Frederikshavn via Skagen and the improvise along the way 😊
Lovelly to see you out and about on your bikes again! Great video! Thankyou.
Thanks! 😊🙏🏻 We have a few trips under our belt that I haven’t had a possibility to turn into movies just yet 😊
Beautiful shots!
Thanks, glad you liked them! 😊
Really nice, thank you. Do you have the route you took somewhere?
It’s more or less just following the cycle route from Hirtshals to Skagen and Frederikshavn and then improvise along the way as your mood and the weather dictates 😊
Such a beautiful journey.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊🙏🏻
I missed your stories! Love the video
Happy to hear you enjoyed the video! 😊🙏🏻
Beautiful trip!
Thanks! 😊🙏🏻
Yet another super nice film. Never disappointing. Absolutely loved it. It’s good to have you back (p.s: would love to see another sound harvesting episode one day too. I’m into field recording too and loved your first episode!) thanks for sharing such a cool little trip!
Happy to hear you liked it! 😊🙏🏻 I’m still working with nature sound recording, but mainly with drop rigs to get animal soundscape recordings that I’m using when I give public speeches. I have decided not to make any more nature sound recording videos for the moment as I can’t justify the time spent working on the movies as the time is better spent working on public speaking and other nature sound related projects.
Oh, these colors....! Totally magic.Thanks!
Glad you liked it, thanks for commenting 😊🙏🏻
No need to make it any harder than it really is :-)
It was pretty hard cycling up the hills, though. Just saying 😉
What superb film! Fine photography and a great feeling for landscape. In all of your productions I find inspiration.
Thank you so much for your kind words, glad to hear you enjoy the videos 😊🙏🏻
Beautiful film 🙂 Doesn't matter that much what you use for filming. Most people watch it on their phone anyway. And cellphones have come a long way with quite acceptable quality on both photos and video. Nice to see images from Denmark. I passed along parts of that route in 2022. Followed the westcoast to the north from just north of Esbjerg all the way up to Grenen. It was more beautiful then I would have guessed 🙂
I agree it doesn’t matter too much in a cell phone, and maybe especially for me as I don’t tend to spend as much energy on “massaging” the video footage as I do with photos. It’s not broadcast television what I am doing 😄 The west coast really has a special vibe to it. I have a video in the pipeline from this summer when we rode an elongated loop from Hirtshals and down to Agger and back along the coast, but we still haven’t been all the way down to Esbjerg. Good to have something to look forward to 😄
Lovely video, nice to see someone else using Carradice saddle bags
Happy to hear you enjoyed it 😊🙏🏻 I absolutely love my Carradice bags! 🥰
Truly enjoyed seeing you on this trip in my homecountry. With - or without - the right lens 🙂
Thanks, glad to hear you enjoyed it! 😊🙏🏻 It can be “langt mellem snapsene” in Denmark when it comes to nature, but it sure is beautiful in the right spots! 😄
❤❤🤗👍
😊🙏🏻
Beautiful video! Love your work! Cheers from Trøndelag
Thanks, happy to hear the movie has reached Trøndelag 😄🙏🏻
does Blackmagic camera app work on your iphone? maybe offer more control. the video looks really good. and its all about the vibe audio , last is the picture.
Thanks for the tip. I must admit I hadn’t heard about the Blackmagic camera app, but it sounds like the app to use on the iPhone. I usually film with mye Fujifilm XT-3 with an ND-filter to control the shutter speed and depth of field, so I’m not sure I’m going to use the iPhone in the future, but if I am, I think your suggestion could be a good idea to have more control over the exposure. Thanks again! 😊
@@BackwoodsBikepacking i just found out about that app like a month ago :D bu my phone was too old. but i have a pro mode in my Galaxy S20FE for some more control. but i come to find just having the everything on full auto is also pretty ok as loong as youre able to capture the moments :D
Yes, things often happen quickly while bikepacking, so a simple camera setup is definitely often advantageous. It’s all a compromise, I suppose 😊
Whatever the technology, a compelling storytelling is compelling storytelling, another great film
Thank you so much for your comment, happy to hear you enjoyed it! 😊🙏🏻
Outstanding storytelling! Your perspective and approach is such a breath of fresh air. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for your wonderful comment, very much appreciated! 😄🙏🏻
Another great video, putting smile on my face! Thanks ;)
Happy to hear that! 😊🙏🏻
outstanding content! thank you.
