That match is overrated. The atmosphere and crowd really carried that match. Their 2013 raw, no.1 contenders match to fight rock at mania where he pulled out that piledriver was a way better match. and no one ever talks about yet. yet its casually one of the greatest raw matches ever and punk's best match ever.

Big thanks for putting this Omnibus together. I've been moving house via repeated trips on foot, so had a tonne of time to track back to all your early content I never came across before. Its fascinating how you guys all spotted the issues that would eventually become actual crises. Love it when Jim goes deep, using his old knowledge, like his explanations for spots or even locations. Keep it coming Like Mussolini!

one thing Punk and Tony Khan should consider when Punk's contract nears its close and/or he decides to retire from in ring activity is having Punk be AEW's head of creative. I think this company needs someone who can mentor and guide other wrestlers to understand what pro-wrestling should be and Punk has one of the better minds for it. i don't know if that's something he wants to do but it seems that from the freedom creative he's been given, he's pretty good at this. like i can see Punk being head of creative, Danielson being the head trainer and maybe even a lead producer/agent/whatever AEW calls it, Regal talent scout, etc. they just need a head booker so that Tony Khan can focus on the high level aspects of running the company rather than the creative.
I dont think he'd make a good booker. He's no politician or a person in position of official authority. Kinda goes against his persona credibility. But I might be wrong
That would be great, He would deal with All The Stars and Everyone under 40 has to watch ROH Punk Matches.
FWIW though I think he'd probably make a fantastic wrestling coach if he were up for it. Maybe he can try running some wrestling classes. But again, he might be a bit too antisocial to regularly engage with everyone no matter who they are. He seems a private guy who keeps a small circle of friends. I more imagine him as the Jordan-esque type person that quietly stands there in the doorframe watching a class happen and makes an occasional comment to whoever catches his eye.

Just listened to this now before going to the Punk’s AEW 2nd year Omnibus. It’s amazing how much seeds of EVP shenanigans were in these clips and how many predictions came to pass.
Not to mention there were so many potential stars that have been squandered in the past 2 years. Wardlow, Caster, even Daniel Garcia had an upside.
Can't wait for part 2. Everything up to his return at Survivor Series in Chicago.

It looked like an important ppv match with both men kicking out of finishers, Cena doing a hurricarrana, which was the first we seen in his career. And it felt like a mainstream ppv fight that we got on free tv

It’s not that Punk failed, it’s that his segments and programs were off on their own island and the rest of the show continued on as-is. They didn’t largely learn to let things breathe, or work better, and so on from Punk’s examples.
Not gonna hold Punk up as a sole paragon here, but it’s obvious that a lot of the talent could have learned more than they have so far.

I'm a 36 (35 at the time) year old man and I yelled and clapped in my lounge as if it was the Beatles lol
Such a trip down memory lane. Part of why I loved Punk even in the WWE is just... he's great at working the crowd. He's not the person that Vince chose for the audience. But he knew how to work the audience. He knew how to make good spots. Man could get pops out of even the most basic moves and promos because he knew how to work up the audience and it was infectious. It always felt like his status was a case of Punk rising to the top despite the fact that he didn't have what Vince (and others) really looked for in a wrestler.
It's the flip side of the coin from... dammit what was it, like Royal Rumble 2014 if I recall correctly? Where the crowd really wanted Bryan Danielson. They were salivating for him to come out in the Royal Rumble and win it. But well... Vince was never going to put him over when he had any other option. It was Roman Reigns coming out at 30 and winning the thing. And just the fans actively booing it. They were told who to like and everyone just rejected it, while Vince and company kept pushing him anyway.
CM Punk? It felt like they were trying to bury him but Vince had to accept "The fans love him" regardless.
And AEW gave him the recognition he deserved instead of always looking for some alternative.
Talking about that Dibiase Piledriver angle... that does remind me of something I've noticed in a lot of modern wrestling. Like really going back to the early 2000s. Basically no babyface on any show had any sort of friends or sense of justice.
I mean I do remember spots growing up where babyfaces would run out to break things up when the heels were getting out of hand. To save someone who was just getting destroyed, etc. But starting around then in the 2000s? No one has any friends what to speak of. Heck not even friends. Just people saying: "This has gone too far and I just couldn't stand by anymore". It's... bizarre. And I frankly missed it and kept wondering any time say, John Cena was getting destroyed by some 8 on 1 beat down or something "... where is literally any other babyface to help?" and wondering if someone was going to come charging down the ramp to make the save. Or when someone was about to get (by intention of the story) seriously injured in an obvious, deliberate attack like anyone coming to try to stop it.
I don't think the babyface save thing should happen all the time. But it should be more than a once in a generation sort of thing which is what it feels like anymore.

I like the idea, if only for the variety. The Cody omnibus was a series of huge ups and downs, Punk’s been a consisent high, and Jericho would be a terrifying plummet.
