I'm legally blind myself. I've had to do what I had to do make ends
meet when I was homeless for six months many years ago. Sometimes you
have to take jobs that nobody wants, in order to live and pay bills.
It's really tough out there, when it comes to a blind or visually person
getting a full-time job. Disabled folks have bills to pay and have to
live. It's really sad that we disabled folks have to live hand to
mouth, with or without a college degree or prior employment experience.
I've worked all my life and I refuse to work for sub minimum wage.
Everyday I feel blessed to have what I have.

Hi! Thank you so much for watching and commenting on this video! It is so nice to hear from you and meet you too! I love your attitude, you are so positive and you continue to work even though you were legally blind. You’re right, it is tough out there, but with a great attitude and perseverance we can definitely push through and do anything we want. Thank you so much for your comment on this video I really enjoyed hearing your story and hearing from you. May I ask, what type of work do you do when you work? Thank you again, I look forward to hearing from you! Matt

Hi, I wanted to say one more thing, just because we are blind that doesn’t mean we need to work for less money per hour or per job than what we actually deserve. I love how you say that you won’t work for minimum-wage or less than minimum-wage just because you’re legally blind. I completely agree, great point! I really enjoyed hearing from you and reading your comment, thank you so much! Talk to you again soon! :-) Matt

Hi Holly! I feel ya. I do work for trade items like clothes or food. Watching a dog or child. Odd jobs. It can be awkward to explain to new people. I am blind too. It happened while in college. I did get my degree, but with heart defects and illness that lead to my vision loss it has been tough to get regular work. I feel ya.

Thank you Katie, I completely agree with this entire conversation, it can definitely be very tough. The interesting part is that just about every blind or visually impaired person I have encountered wants to work and contribute so badly. I just wish that there was an easy solution and easy answer for all of us. But unfortunately, there’s not. I also do not work at traditional job, but I do as much as I possibly can to contribute financially. Thanks, great conversation! Matt

You’re right, I don’t need to explain to people how I make money since that is my own privacy. But, it seems that so many people are interested and ask 1 million questions about what I do for work and or how I make money. But just like you said, I definitely don’t need to tell people that. Thanks again for all the support! See you again soon, probably tomorrow, Matt

I'm legally blind from birth, and I'm 77 years old. I have actually only had two jobs in my life. The first at a retail store from which I was fired. Then I went to college and then taught elementary school for 30 years, retiring at the age of 52. I did a remodeling business for 8 years while owning and maintaining a rental property. I have remodeled all sis houses we have owned. Competing with sighted people is usually a losing proposition, so accept what you can't do and figure out what you can do and do it!!

Hey Larry, thank you so much for watching and commenting on this video. It is so nice to hear from you and meet you too. That is so cool that you taught elementary school for 30 years and were able to retire at 52. I also think it’s even more cool that you remodeled all six houses that you owned along with only I can I remodeling business along with maintaining a rental property. All of those things sound exactly like what I enjoy too. Did you actually physically go out and do the remodeling in the houses, or were you more of the general contractor for the projects? Thank you again for reaching out to me, it is really nice to hear from you. I look forward to talking and getting to know more about you. Talk to you again soon, Matt

@@BlindtoBillionaire Yes, I did do all of the work myself. Since teaching school gives you three months lay off and we couldn't afford to hire people, so was learn how to do it or it wouldn't get done. I also couldn't find summer jobs. Thank you for being a teacher. It’s one of those jobs that never can be thanked enough. Growing up I was blessed to have a lot of friends with disabilities. The greatest lessons I learned from my friends was persistence and the ability to adapt quickly. I believe that children have very open hearts and minds and having exposure to successful people that have disabilities is enlightening and teaches them empathy. Watching my friends grow up made me really want a environment that was accessible to everyone, and I’m sure that your students left your classroom with the same feeling.

    • @BlindtoBillionaire
      @BlindtoBillionaire  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I absolutely agree with you! A child growing up around someone with a disability or suffering from some type of affliction is going to make that child grow up to be a much more understanding and well rounded person versus the child who has no exposure to anyone who is different. I mean, everybody is different in their own way, but it seems that most people just fall into a cookie cutter form. Either way, I absolutely agree with you about teachers, a valuable skill set that is so necessary in so many ways. I don’t think enough people recognize teacher for all of the amazing things that they are doing. Great comment! Mad

I still work retail. I do not disclose my "impairment" when applying for jobs. I am in management. I work 40- 60 hours a week. I use my experiences and techniques I have learned to train others. Using strengths and acknowledging weaknesses and adjusting where needed. Here in the past year or 2 I have opened up to others (my supervisors) about the severity of my eyesight. They are very supportive and surprised. I am at 20/200 left eye and 20/40 in my right. I still have my license but have to test every year for it

I'm visually impaired and used to work at Goodwill. I am planning to work there again hopefully soon. One of the things that helped me was getting a feel for the place. Working in the back was a bit of a challenge though, because I had to work without my cane and had to be extremely aware of everything.

It’s great that they allow you to use your cane while out on the floor. It sounds like you were very skilled at what you do and they are lucky to have you! It is really great to have the opportunity to share my experiences related to this topic. I am a 37-years old man with a visual impairment from INDONESIA. Foer living, currently, I am working as a disability advisor in Center for Disability Studies and Services at a public university as well as a counselor at an inclusive school. I also work as a researcher in a collaboration program with Australian scholars called AIDRAN. I have married, and have one little girl. My wife work as a pharmacist in two places. I do think that having a higher degree of education will open a wider opportunity to a full-time job as well as better social-economics.

RP here as well. I always answer with "I'm a stay at home dad." It can be a bit interesting how people react. There is still a bit of a stigma to stay at home dad which is a shame, sometimes the conversation goes deeper and I'll explain my vision and they'll sort of "that explains why" like no normal dude would do it out of choice. I love it but it helps that I, like you, have a strong family support system. As for income, I do the eBay thing as well, often I'll sign up email newsletters of items that in hot demand, say watches, set an alarm, buy them on pre-order and flip them and other things like that. I live rural so transportation is always an issue. Digging the channel man!

Hello I'm legally blind. I have some vision, can see enough to get around in my town. I can see steps, curbs, etc. Due to health I had to stop working, so I'm at home. I'm mid 50s, but still active. Grandmother of 3, one stayed with me, 9yrs old. I am teaching myself to paint on canvas, and sketching. I cook, have a few recipes I'd love love to market, funds are scattered. My sister sings and in the process of putting a show together for one woman entertainer. That's a big project for our family. We love God and using the Secret to change old ways of thinking....

      @BlindtoBillionaire  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi, thank you so much for watching this video and for reaching out to us. In my opinion as a visually impaired person, it seems that the majority of people in this community would prefer to work from home if possible. Maybe some people in this community do not have the skills to navigate out on their own or just feel more comfortable at home working in a position versus reporting to a job. Not only that, sometimes it can be difficult to fit in at a workplace with our visual impairment as many of us in this community feel secluded and like we are left out in conversations because the majority of conversations are nonverbal versus verbal and we rely on what we hear versus what we can see, since we cannot see. LOL. I hope that makes sense. Thanks again for being here! Matt

Blind to Billionaire hi Matt, yes, it’s a good career especially if you have a spouse that can provide medical insurance. But to be fair, my husband was also a massage therapist and sometimes it is harder for the guys. Sometimes women feel awkward about seeing a male therapist and sometimes men feel awkward about seeing a male therapist. I am legally blind now but when I went to massage school I did have a lot more vision than I do now. Another side hustle I have thought about doing is pet sitting in our home but have not started that venture yet. Thanks for the great video!

On the other hand, I won't give up on it that easy! I didn't get at this stage of the game for that! I mean, I managed to learn English as a second language and overcame my visual limitations... Love your channel. I am not legally blind, but my brother is. We are a family that has LHON. My brother has alway owned his own commercial charter fishing boat business, and has done extremely well with it. A year ago he lost his vision to now being legally blind. He can not operate his charter boat business any longer, so he has decided to sell that business. We live on an island off the coast of MA, and working on the water has been his life (he is now 55 years old) so giving up his commercial captains license, he has found another way to continue to work on the water and make an income. He has filed for all the permits he needs to open and operate a oyster farm. It will be in a pond in the town he lives in. He will not be able to run it alone, but will be able to make the entire oyster farm be operable with just him and one other person. Believe it or not, there is a lot of money to be made in the oyster farming business. The best part is he will not be in very deep water to run the business. The one person he will hire will do the tasks that my brother can just not do. I'll keep you posted how it does.....hoping all the permits will be signed off in the next 90 days, then he is good to go! Even though he went legally blind so quickly, he refused to stop working on the water.....it's in his blood! I'll keep you posted how it goes this summer....."all the best to you"

This is a perfect example of someone who was doing what they love when suddenly losing their vision and now finding a way to adapt and still do what they absolutely loved and create an income. I absolutely love this story! Thank you so much for sharing, I love the resilience and persistence to continue with the business in a different avenue after the vision loss of your brother has experienced. Yes, please keep me informed on how it is going, I would absolutely love to connect with you and him a little bit more and learn more about the business! That sounds so cool, right up my alley!I read through your comment a couple times because I found it to be so interesting, I just love the creativity that your brother has to figure out a way that he can still do what he loves and what he knows even after not being able to charter his boat anymore. @@BlindtoBillionaire Your welcome! If you are interested, if you have an email address, I would be happy to email you a link to my brothers commercial charter boat business here on MV Island. Your wife can read and describe the boat and some of the pictures of his customers holding up some huge fish. This is the business he will be selling now, and gearing up for oyster farming. Will be much safer for him. Some of his charters were 100 miles off shore for overnight. Catching yellow fin tuna or swordfish. Now he will be working in a small pond. By the way, I just ordered him a pair of Heist 2.0 polarized sunglasses. In a way, he is very lucky, we were born and raised on this small island, he knows the little towns and streets well, and everybody knows him, so even now becoming legally blind, he can get around a little. With LHON, it is central vision loss. He does have some peripheral vision. So, I would love to email you charter fishing website....by the way, his name is Jeffrey.

That’s awesome that you have found so many revenue streams. I’m sighted and groom dogs for a living. One day I would love to own a salon of my own. I would love to hire people for different life backgrounds. I think that maybe a low vision or blind person could be a really good dog bather or groomer’s assistant. Most of the washing, drying and brushing is very hands on and doesn’t require vision and can be done by feel alone.
I’m -8.5 without glasses and at times with wild/splashing dogs I have to take off my glasses as I wash and dry. I just have to keep my workspace extremely organized so I can grab tools as I need them. Once you bathe dogs for a while you can quickly feel if a coat is clean or properly dried and brushed.

Good morning! Thank you for watching this video. Yes, setting up multiple sources of income is very important to me. I am actively setting up as many as possible at all times and maintaining them so that they continue to flow. As for your comment about dog grooming, that’s actually a really good come in because you’re accurate in saying that it is hands-on, I mean I’ve never done the job but I imagine it is very hands-on and probably something that a visual impaired or blind person could do. I am not saying it is an easy job by any means, but rather since it is such a tactile job, it is something that potential he a visually impaired person could do because you were literally using your hands, it is almost like massage, the stereo typical profession for blind people. But yet it would just be with an animal and preparing it’s for. LOL. It’s cool to hear that you keep such a clean workspace, I think that isn’t very important! Thanks so much for watching this, it has been fun learning more about you :-) Matt

I've been thinking of quitting my job for months now because this so stressdul and I feel it's not the most appropriate job for me as I work with people who have disabilities so it's not the ideal situation being that I have my own disability. After 3 years I was diagnosed with Sixth Nerve Palsy. In mid-2015 I got a floater in my right eye, I started seeing double vision, and a year later macular generation (early stages) in the right eye, glaucoma, and cataracts. My optic nerves have no blood supply now. I am 57. After several MRIs to rule out a brain tumor my Eye Specialist stated my vision loss was autoimmune related. My biological dad had Cerebellar Ataxia and so did my Aunt. I found out in 2000 that my Dad had been to Duke Hospital and had multiple tests done (Neurology) and there is a chromosome defect passed down due to his parents (my grandparents) being first cousins. The Specialists at Duke said this DNA chromosome could skip or not in the next generation but would never go away and is why I chose never to have children. I have many cousins and other family members who have various autoimmune diseases. My twin had to stop working in 2016. So with this being said I had always worked beginning at age 15 (1979) with a work permit and continued working in the public through the end of 2014. It took me 29 months to get my SSDI disability. I really miss working and earning wages because it is hard to live off less money even though I had more than enough work credits when your Insurance for Part B and D come out and premiums you bring home much less. I want people to understand that your health can be taken in an instant. I am so glad I found your page, Matt. Previously found you and your wife watching the Stimulus updates. Thanks for your insight and informative videos. P.S I live in NC but my husband was born in Minnesota and transplanted to NC in 1981.

It is called retinal Pigmentosa which means that the retina in my eyes are detached and I have cataracts in both causing me to be legally blind. I try to look for something to do as far as jobs under the table but it's hard for me because Social Security screws me over here in Texas. Plus I wasn't always legally blind. I was but my vision has gradually gotten worse over the years and there is potential that I could go completely blind. I'm covered in tattoos and I have somewhat of a criminal background which really screws me over and I have no idea what to do or how to make money. I really appreciate this video. I do not want to say that I know what you are going through, because I don’t, but I do have an idea of what it is like not being able to find it meaningful work or being lost on what to do for employment or income. Nobody understands what it is actually like unless they are blind or visually impaired like we are. Also, I feel bad that people judge you without giving you a chance. That is one nice thing about being someone who is visually impaired, we do not judge people based on what they look like, but rather what comes out of their mouth like I was saying in some of my videos. Hopefully you can find more helpful information from all of my other videos and future videos. I always want to do as much as I can to help everybody in this community and provide valuable content as well as serve people. Hopefully I can give you some ideas to help you out in someway. A very close friend of mine when I was in graduate school was totally blind. He had been an accountant, and when he suffered from detached retinas, he could no longer work in the field. He was in graduate school with me in a masters program in counseling psychology. His wife was a nurse and also in the program. My ex-husband and I became very close to them, and we double dated quite frequently. When my marriage ended, I talked to him, since I knew he was an exceptionally bright, great therapist. Unfortunately he was denied many jobs back in the 70's due to his disability. He was told a job was filled, and I was called in to interview for the same job 2 days after they denied it to him. That was so unfair, since he was a very astute, kind man and highly qualified for jobs in the field. I lost contact with he and his wife, after I moved to Florida from NJ, and I heard he died young from complications of his diabetes. That was so sad, he was such a great and loyal friend.

Hi! First of all, thank you very much for watching this video and for reaching out to me, I’m happy to hear from you and I am willing to do whatever I can to help you answer any questions that you may have. Thank you so much for subscribing to this channel, I’m very happy to have you here! As for your questions, you can start a TH-cam channel, but I have to say, it’s definitely a very slow process and initially it will not result in much income at all. It takes a long time to build a base of subscribers, views, and to get exposure. I have been hit on TH-cam here for about 14 months, and you can see where I am right now. My channel is not small, but it is not huge either. It is growing at a respectable pace which I am happy with. There are a few ways to make money on TH-cam a couple being ads, ads that are run before at the video and after the video which you may have seen when you watch this one. The ads pay very little, literally a penny or less per ad that is run. There are other ways such as affiliates from Amazon or other places, and selling them merchandise among other ideas. Again, in order to do all of this, a person would need to have an established channel with some type a following and trust along with rapport with the audience. So although I am an advocate for starting a TH-cam channel and I think it would be great, I just want to tell you that it is definitely a very slow process. As for some of the other skills that I talked about in this video, I’m not sure exactly which ones you’re referring to, but I would like to help if you are able to elaborate more specifically what you would like me to talk about. Thanks again, I really hope this helps even though I didn’t give a whole lot of information. Please feel free to ask more questions and I will answer in anyway that I possibly can. Thanks again, talk to you soon! Matt

They bought a house and decided they were going to replace the carpet in the entire upstairs. They got a bid from Home Depot to replace the carpet and it also included the carpet removal. We looked at the bed and I told him I would I would do it for 75% of the cost of Home Depot. They said sure, so I did it. Honestly, there aren’t exactly many skills needed, basically just cutting it in about five or 6 foot sections and then rolling it up. LOL. After doing that for them, I started advertising and started getting quite a few jobs. Over the last couple years, it has evolved into a pretty steady business that has evolved from flooring removal into interior home demolition. The majority of our work now is kitchen, bathroom, flooring, and other demolition inside homes and commercial buildings. We actually do a very little flooring removal anymore, the majority of our work is demolition of kitchens, bathrooms, and a variety of other demolition work. Once again, you don’t exactly need a whole Lotta skills to do this stuff, you just need to know how to break things. LOL. So I guess you could say learning the skills was somewhat of an accident. Well, I shouldn’t say accident, I should say I stumbled into it by helping a family member. And then I started advertising and found out that there is actually demand out there for the service I was offering and started picking up quite a few jobs. In fact, tomorrow we are going to demo our kitchen. We are tearing down the entire kitchen, everything in it goes. All the countertops, cabinetry, appliances, and even a couple walls, and the flooring. We will start tomorrow morning and be done in probably about five hours.I guess I just don’t let the low vision stop me from earning money. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely makes it difficult as we have far fewer opportunities than someone who is cited, but I also know that I do have skills, and that I am intelligent in different ways that allows me to send to still generate income. I just do what I can. I do know that there are a few things that I definitely cannot do, but I do as much as I possibly can and I love to stay busy, when I am not staying busy, I get very bored and agitated. I hope this explains in a little more detail. Please feel free to ask if you would like me to elaborate in more detail. Thanks again, I look forward to hearing from you again sometime soon! Matt

And on that note but different question, how would I go about learning, say, web development? I’ve been wanting to be basically in accessibility testing consultant but I assumed that I would need the knowledge on how websites work so that I can give companies advice on how to make their website accessible.

Hi, I love that idea, and great question. I have never investigated this, but I can give you a recommendation which I think would be worth checking out. There’s a website called Linda.com where you can learn just about anything. I’m not sure how Linda is spelled, but if you search around I’m sure you can find it very easily. It’s a website where you can learn like I said, just about anything and I think it is relatively inexpensive. Do some investigation on there and see what you can find. Otherwise another option would be you, start reading or listening to audiobooks that explains anything and everything discussing web development and anything else that might pertain to potential work that you would be doing in this field. I hope these recommendations are somewhat helpful. Please let me know if I can help in any other way. Matt

I have enjoyed watching your video. You have presented some insightful ideas to make an income as a visual impaired. I have low vision and one of the ways I make an income is testing websites and apps by voicing over my feedback by recording my screen activity of a prototype from an existing place of business. This is done by signing up with a testing service provider such as usertesting.com or userlytics.com as examples.

My dad usually gets all the credit and everybody thinks that he’s the one who started it and then he brought me on, but it’s actually the other way around. LOL, glad that you enjoyed the video! Matt

Thank you for the video.about four years ago I became completely blind in my left eye and I would say at least 50 to 70% blind in the right eye from glaucoma. I was a cashier at a convenience store before that. I had also started making jewelry at home. I would really love to work again doing anything at this point. My only problem is I live in the middle of nowhere and really don't have the help or transportation I need to find something to do.

Hi, thank you so much for sharing more about yourself. It is really unfortunate that you lost so much of your vision due to glaucoma. However, it is nice that you were working up to that point and that you started making jewelry afterward. It is unfortunate if you live somewhere where there are not as many opportunities to receive services, but if there’s a way that you can reach out to your local agency, there may be a way that you can obtain services. I hope this is helpful in someway. Thanks again for reaching out, you seem like a great person and I look forward to hearing from you :-) Matt

I was wondering because I know it’s disheartening to think about, but something that’s holding me back from pursuing a relationship with my blind friend is that I’m unsure of how we would make it financially. Hi, thank you very much for reaching out with these questions. Have you been in contact with a department in your state or country that helps assist blind and visually impaired people? That would probably be your best resource. They would be able to give you the resources and accommodations you need in order to work in the field that you would like. They may give you some specialized training or specialized technology that will help assist you in completing your job. That would probably be the best advice right now. Depending on where you were located, possibly do an Internet search for services for blind and visually impaired and your state or country and see what there is to offer. You may find a department they will be able to help you with all of your questions and concerns. I hope this is helpful. Thanks again, Matt

    • @BlindtoBillionaire

Hi! That is a great question and one that many of us in this community have been asking for a very long time. The majority of people who are blind or visually impaired do not work simply for the same reasons, we do not what know what we can do, or how we can do it for work. I actually do not work a traditional job for many of the same reasons, but I do a variety of other work and projects. I do some contract work where I do demolition of a variety of things, flooring, bathrooms, kitchen, and a variety of other demolition projects. I do not need my eyes in order to do this as I can feel what I am doing. It is not the ideal type of work, but it is something that I can do without vision. A lot of people in this community are continuously asking these questions about what we can do. I would recommend figuring out what you were passionate about and what you were interested in, and then seeing if there’s a way that you can earn income from doing something you’re passionate about or love to do. It may take some research and some digging, but there’s probably a way for you to do it. Also figure out and determine where you have a lot of skills, or education, and find a way to extrapolate those talents, skills, and education into income. I hope this is helpful! Matt

Hi, thank you for the for the explanation. It is nice to get to know more about you and the extent of your vision loss. I’m so happy to hear that you still have pretty decent acuity and you can still see many things except for it with distance. That is very nice! I’m glad that you’ve learned so much from my videos and found inspiration from them as well, thank you for that feedback! It’s so great to have you here in this community, I sincerely appreciate your support and look forward to connecting with you again sometime soon. Enjoy the videos and look forward to your comments.
