  • Over the last two decades, General Motors LS and LT engines have gotten better, stronger, and even more efficient. But as the mechanical components have evolved, the Engine Control Module had to evolve too.
    One of the most frequent questions we get is how to tell the difference in these generations. In this Tech Tuesday, we'll give an overview based on our years of experience.

    I've been told that buick had a different fueling strategy than chevy. Pont, etc
    .
    I've also noticed differences when plugging in a scan tool or just working on the engine (I'm a mechanic)
    .
    Any truth to this?
    I'm sure it's to allow for a smoother idle for granny in her buick
    .
    I know the 3100 uses the 24x crank sensor to control timing at idle....to control idle rpm ( also has a 7x crank sensor that controls ignition....it will run with just the 7x, but iirc, changes to a batch fire injection versus sequential... or maybe that's if the cam position sensor goes out.... still I've had my 24x fail and it ran just fine off the 7X)
    .
    The 3.1 doesn't use the IAC as much as something like a 3.8 with only a 7x crank sensor
    .
    .
    But... again... my main question is what is the exact differences in feeling strategy between a Buick and Chevy ECU??

    As a dealer tech, which numbers are you talked by about for the PCM? Is this the service number? I don’t think this is a part number’s last 3 digits. I am swapping an 03 Tahoe 5.3L into a 67 C10. This my last major project and other than a cam upgrade and refreshing all seals and gaskets. (Son hit black ice) I already had the truck (C10) given to me.
    My main question is the MAF sensor. The hot-wire tube type is new and on it. Newer vehicles use a small bolt in with NTC thermistor is separate, but if using a cold air intake simply because I have few choices, is this something that is changed in tuning? Or not possible? I just verified customers concern then diagnose root cause and repair that! Every vehicle that hat left my stalls had my business card (Thanks Name) back of card was future repairs depending on use. Low pressure sales but heads up warning for future service. I can’t tell you ho many times the Buick guys where playing cards, sticking pickles on ceiling, I had 5 vehicles with “Ok” to fix now, and more outside! (I work on Different Brand/ 4X4’s).
    I am trying to learn these aftermarket parts for daily driver, get up and go but fuel economy!
    Do you have a thoughts and info on MAF differences as they fall into two camps outside Speed Density! Thanks. Interesting video as I learn. ASE Master Tech since 1978 + L1 Retired.

    What gen is a 06 GTO with a E40?

    • @SamuelBrownDPnetwork
      @SamuelBrownDPnetwork ปีที่แล้ว +1

      E40 are a hybrid breed between gen 3 and 4 ...we run 24x ..sensor locations are gen 4 but reluctor is gen 3 ...its fueling tables and ve characteristics more similar to gen 3

    Does your Gen IV class cover the E78?

    • @TheTuningSchool
      @TheTuningSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's covered in the GM Level 1 class.

    Wich ecu does the GM 1.4 and 2.0 use

    • @TheTuningSchool
      @TheTuningSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some quick searching shows E78s where used in some of the older 1.4L applications, and E39As are used in some of the newer 2.0L applications. If you find out more details of these ECU’s, feel free to share with us, as these are not engine platforms we specialize in.

      Being twin-turbo-boosted...might make for a good video, especially since the LF4 is living on in the ATS-V successor !
