IMHO, the GREATEST intro to an album EVER!! Elton John, Bernie Taupin and the Elton John Band ... UNBELIEVABLE piece of music. Loved it back in the day, and still LOVE IT!!
I am a big metal fan but an older guy and I cry when I think of the great songs of the seventies. This one and recent Who song, Love Reign over me, I listened to countless times as a young man. Elton John is a genius. Few artists like him in the world. I remember buying Good Bye Yellow Brick Road. It is a kind of sad that many young people do not know this song. Thank you for bringing to life today. It was special.

@@Kel.N.RichReactions So spooky that you did this classic on the same day as Love Reign O'er Me. The two best double albums of all time were actually released in the very same month, October 1973. "I've seen that movie too" is my personal favourite from this album - Bernie as well as Elton at the peak of his powers.
Still play this song nearly every day when I am setting up for the next days theatre cases...alone and music turned up loud. Thank you for the priceless reaction to this masterpiece...
Oh God, and she's a PAINTER, too. You are not worthy, Rich! ;-) Some of my best musical memories were from when I went to Art School in York PA, '73 to '77 and had a half hour commute each way with a close friend at the same school. His tiny green VW Bug had a great stereo, and we pushed it to the max each way, every day! We'd each bring a newly recorded Cassette and treat each other to our newest 'finds'. Best way to 'learn' music. My daughter is a blues singer in Nashville, and the leader of her own band. You can only imagine the 'bedtime music' I shared with her 'back in the day.' Winston Woof, First of His Name, Master of Stuffed Toys. Well played, indeed! ;-) My own Tink (wrongly named Tinkerbell, as he was the only short-haired male in a little of six, like his sister and mother), likes the name, but also likes 'Psychokiller', due to his absolute love of showing his worth in that regard. I have a drawer-full of squirrels' tails, and he's a full Ace with bats.....
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is one of my five "desert island" albums. I'd recommend ANY song on it. However, one of the lesser known songs that I'd like to suggest is Have Mercy On The Criminal from "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player". The lyrics are a little dark, but the arrangement is fantastic.
@Kel n Rich back in 1975 my high school was putting together a Halloween play but really did NOT have a good beginning. I suggested this song & we began the play with the Opening music & some other special effects. It was awesome*
When I received my degree in music, my friend and I played these songs at graduation. We put a band together after that and rode the wave. Great times.
Such a great song. I think it's hard to expect someone to appreciate this kind of song fully the first time you hear it. I have no recollection of when I heard this the first time but I am certain that there are grooves is my brain that every note of this and hundreds of other songs fit into like well-worn paths when I encounter them. Love it!!
One of the very first concerts I ever attended was Elton John in 1976 in Charlotte NC ♥️💙♥️ I’m telling you now, one of the best shows EVER!! Happy Anniversary guys 💜💜 Love your channel 💕
I saw him in 1989 at the age of 20 and was so excited to finally see him after listening to him throughout my childhood. He's still rockin and so happy you and many others are doing reaction videos to this fantastic music.
I saw Elton and his band in 1974 on the tour in support of this album. The band took the stage and the crowd was nuts in anticipation. Elton was dressed as outrageously as the photos suggest but his manner was very subdued and somber. They opened with this opus, slowly building through 11 minutes (as you note) to the rocking "Love Lies Bleeding." Ultra-tight band playing very well together. I was far too young (16) to consciously understand the juxtaposition of raw pain and jubilant rock as art imitating this brutal, beautiful life. Privileged to be introduced to live music of this quality.
smilerpink I saw the same tour in Vancouver and have photos I took of Elton opening with this song... covered in fluorescent balls... remember he encored with Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting when it was a new song being introduced... wow!
I went to the Detroit show at Olympia and it was fantastic. My brother smuggled in a 35MM camera and he got a lot of great black and white photos.....he had a telephoto.
I saw Elton in 1974. Goodbye Yellowbrick Road Tour. They opened with this song. They started with heavy fog enveloping the stage and a spiral staircase emerged out of the fog and down came Elton in full regalia as the eerie organ music played. He was wearing a very large and flowing cape and as he reached the bottom and headed toward his piano he shucked the cape while at the same time he produced a magnum bottle of Southern Comfort (this was when he still drank). He place the bottle on the piano and over the course of the 2 hour show, I'll be damned if he didn't drink that whole thing. Several times during the performance he picked up his bench and threw it into the crowd. Absolutely amazing show. I was a junior in high school and it was like my 2nd or 3rd concert and made quite an impression on me. Thanks for the reaction. Brand new subscriber.
Summer of '74? Elton John already had another album by May 1974 called "Caribou". I remember buying the Yellow Brick Road album in the fall of 1973. The radio stations didn't discover the hits on Yellow Brick Road until about March 1974 and for a while there he had a list of songs they were playing on the radio. "Bennie And The Jets" "Saturday Nights' Alright For Fighting" "The Bitch Is Back" "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" "Pinball Wizard" "Philadelphia Freedom" "Bad Blood" (with Neil Sadeka) and "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" (with John Lennon) were all hits in 1974.
@@ldchappell1 You're right. However, I was 13 when I heard the album in its entirety over the summer of 74 at my neighbors. I'm going off of my memory.
@@richardmodglin3900 Now that I think about, (without the internet), nine months seems about right to discover a new album in those days. If you didn't hear it on the radio or at a friend's house, chances are you didn't hear it at all. Like you, I heard most of my music in those days from my friend's collections.
Such a great moment getting to watch Kel discover this song!!! When I purchased this album I qued up this song and over an hour later I started to discover the rest of the album... This was one of my top ten ever first listens and to hear it here just brought it all back... Classic!!!
Something I didn't know until fairly recently is that Love Lies Bleeding is actually a droopy red plant. "During the Victorian era, specific flowers had different meanings. Love-lies-bleeding stood for hopeless love or hopelessness in the Victorian language of flowers." It was also popular in 18th century America and in England. When I learned that it kind of changed the meaning of the lyrics for me a bit.
I'm glad they played the original version of this song and not some recent live performance of it. Elton's early songs are best heard in the same time period they were released when Elton still had his original amazing voice. I was in my early teens when this album was released. What great memories this brings back!
Thanks for sharing details about seeing Elton live show, and of course, adorable Winston Woof! Rock on, Kel-n-Rich! Happy One Year Channel Anniversary!
Yeah, but use the "Madman" demo version with Mick Ronson on guitar, released as a bonus track on the remastered Tumbleweed Connection CD. th-cam.com/video/SwzSFwUNO_Y/w-d-xo.html

He was on fire and his band was right there with him! I got this album as a teenager and was fascinated, and this song(s?) was certainly a crown jewel of the whole thing. Amazing production. Everybody plays so expertly and plays to the song, and the songwriting does a great job of featuring all their talents. Tremendous accomplishment from some VERY talented (and, aside from EJ, largely unknown) musicians.
Happy Anniversary Kel & Rich. Its been an Amazing Adventure watching you and your reaction to so many great songs i grew up to. Im 60 years old and listen to you'll react to songs like this is outstanding. Seeing Kel's reaction is priceless and such a joy. Happy Anniversary and many more to come.
Watch some of his stuff from early on back when it was a 3 piece band and he was just Elton before he became ELTON! Handstands on the keyboard and you could actually understand the words. Nigel 'so many drums he couldn't possibly miss' Olsson and Dee Murray on bass. Epic stuff. My father somehow got me in to see the 11/17/70 radio concert, I was way too young (just turned 16), but he was in the biz so ... me, my father and my older brother along with about 100 others got an almost private show. Blown away! I still have that now worn out LP that came out later.
One of my first concerts. 1976 madison square garden. The show opened with the stage covered in fog. Elton came out dressed in a duck suit and opened with this song :)
This whole album made me cry as a kid, reminded me of my grandparents i'd lost and many other... so wheneveri woould listen to this, i would cry my eyes out, almost any song... Yellow Brick Road especially...lol... great job guys...

Good luck to ya - how come you've never heard this before - almost like saying one's never heard a Beatles song before? Best Elton album; Captain Fantastic - pure gold. Blimey you've got a lot of amazing listening ahead.
gerry greene I might’ve been there! If you mean the Forum in Montreal. The stage was dark, then the fog and the whole, fabulous mood for this epic piece. Won’t ever forget how deep, how wide, how high it stretched our souls!!✨ (This was the concert that I’d waited in line with a friend from 3am, camping out on the sidewalk, until the doors opened at 10am to sell tickets-was almost crushed to death!😲And yeah, we got great seats!)
One of the most stunning instrumentals ever and it came at a time when the competition was tough with Yes, Genesis, Mike Oldfield etc. Really amazing arrangement and the way it slips so well into the next song is sublime. without doubt its Elton and the band at their very very best. love lies bleeding sure as hell kicks some major ass..wow! nearly fell off my seat when you said 47 years ago..just seems like yesterday.love you dudes ya soo cute..respect from the UK !!
Interesting question. Gowan, on tour for his first album in 1985, (AKA Lawrence Gowan of Styx fame) paused in his show to declare that Beethoven was the first Rock n Roll musician. He told us that from the point of view of musical structure and compositional style, Ludwig was a Rocker. And then Gowan played a couple of minutes of a Beethoven piece on his piano, and whipped up his audience into an absolute frenzy. He rocked so hard that he easily proved his point.
OronOfMontreal : In 1986, I saw Gowan at the University of Guelph. He played the Maple Leaf Rag (think ragtime piano like Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer). He played a crazy, sped-up, rocked-out version of this 1920’s tune and it was absolutely amazing. Really showcased his piano chops.
I love the new intro - it does a great job of telling the tale for all three or you. Also love little Winston, although at this stage my four catz probably eat his weight every day. ;-) I remember staying awake all night, with the headphones on, on my parents couch, the day I bought this now landmark album, and it still contains some of his best remembered songs. I saw him in about '72, in the Ice Stadium in Hershey PA, when the new album he was promoting was 'Don't Shoot Me; I'm Only the Piano Player.' It's funny; my brother and I 'shared' many of the same groups, each buying different albums to share. So his was 'Madman Across the Water.' Likewise with Jethro Tull, where he bought 'War Child' while I had 'Songs from the Wood.' It was only later that we each had to 'fill in' our collections.... I envy Kel for discovering all this incredible music for the first time! ;-)

Still play this song nearly every day when I am setting up for the next days theatre cases...alone and music turned up loud. Thank you for the priceless reaction to this masterpiece...
Marriage does work!
You can only imagine the 'bedtime music' I shared with her 'back in the day.'
Winston Woof, First of His Name, Master of Stuffed Toys.
Love it!!
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Candle in the Wind, Bennie and the Jets---one of the greatest album sides ever.
No lie, I forgot those were all together. A real best of!
Truth!
Harmony
The best of all time
The greatest side. and then Goodbye Yellow Brick Road the next track! I love the Captain Fantastic album even more.
I am hearing for the 1st time again through this... and that's making me cry....
Every time I’ve listened to this song for 45 plus damned years the music still makes me cry. Every time. So moving and beautiful. Gah.
Great song. I saw Elton John September, 1980, in Madison, Wisconsin. Old school Elton, awesome.
Happy Anniverserary! So glad you kept at it and came back.
Love you guys! Great, timeless choice.... stay safe!
Yep. Summer of 74. Will never forget! Great reaction.
@@ldchappell1
You're right.
Classic!!!
I don't know if Elton still opens his concerts with these 2 or not, but when he does it's transporting!!!
Opens the 2nd half of the show with them...
He does
Another awesome choice Rich! My fav Elton song....and Kel brings back the joy of music for me! Thank you both....oh, and Winston too!
Something I didn't know until fairly recently is that Love Lies Bleeding is actually a droopy red plant. "During the Victorian era, specific flowers had different meanings. Love-lies-bleeding stood for hopeless love or hopelessness in the Victorian language of flowers."
It was also popular in 18th century America and in England.
Almost every song Elton sang/played, the lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin and Elton John wrote all the music. I really do appreciate you guys!!
Thanks for sharing details about seeing Elton live show, and of course, adorable Winston Woof! Rock on, Kel-n-Rich! Happy One Year Channel Anniversary!
Try"Mona Lisas and mad hatters","madman across the water","burn down the mission","tiny dancer","Levon" all classics by"sir"Elton John" ☮️
Yeah, but use the "Madman" demo version with Mick Ronson on guitar, released as a bonus track on the remastered Tumbleweed Connection CD.

"The Greatest Discovery" !!!
yes to all.
Wow, congratulations on your 1st year, keep em coming!!!! My wife and I just celebrated 32 years of marriage! Yea us!
This is my favorite Elton John song!!
Davey Johnstone is one of the most underrated guitarists ever.
Holy Cow!! I thought I was the only one who knew this song!! from one of my most favorite albums ever!!!
Me too !!
Forgotten classic
Song got tons of airplay
You thought you were the only one that knew a song I've heard on the radio many times.Huh?
YOU GUYS ROCK! I just found you and I LOVE you! Big smile!!! I was a teen when this came out and purchased it immediately. So many good good memories from that era. Thank you for reacting.
PLEASE react to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
I forgot how epic the bass playing is on this!
Wow I'm glad y'all are back. Looking forward to catching back up and watching new videos. Y'all always make me :-)
I remember hearing this as a kid , sitting at my mom's friends house. All the adults trying to write a drum corps show to it. *Sigh* the good ole days.
NOW these 2 are at mt speed! I've seen Elton doing this LIVE in L.A. 20 years ago and IT NEVER GETS OLD!!!
Love this song!
My only request is for this to play at my funeral truly one of my favorite E J song an eight track for the ages...
Mine will be Nilsson's 'The Most Beautiful World in the World', but I get your feeling. ;-)
Good couple and nice persons, glad you guys like this wonderful music we enjoyed day por day
Regards
Carlos
Dream theater covered this song on their ‘’change of seasons’’ album.
I wish they'd stick to ruining their own songs rather than infringe on others who actually had originality.
Stevedrums, I definitely do not agree with that. Dream Theater did a really good cover of this and they are an extremely talented band.
@@Schnorgldorf Yes, absolutelly gorgeous version.
@@stevedrums1675 lol hey guys I just said "DrEam THEaTEr ISn'T ORiGInaL" #CLOWN
Was Perfect cover
One of my first concerts. 1976 madison square garden. The show opened with the stage covered in fog. Elton came out dressed in a duck suit and opened with this song :)
This whole album made me cry as a kid, reminded me of my grandparents i'd lost and many other... so wheneveri woould listen to this, i would cry my eyes out, almost any song... Yellow Brick Road especially...lol... great job guys...
man you are doing all kinds of classics from my day-keep it up-i don't know if kel has heard someone saved my life tonite-one of his top 5 for sure-one of those tear in your eye songs!-saw elton live at foxborough stadium where the patriots play on our nation's bicentennial [ 7/04/76] .best concert i've ever seen and i have probably been to 200-3 hours of bliss-and of course the encore was philadelphia freedom-he wore a glittered red white and blue uncle sam suit with shorts and a tall stovepipe hat-no recordings of that concert-too bad-no cell phones back then!
Good luck to ya - how come you've never heard this before - almost like saying one's never heard a Beatles song before? Best Elton album; Captain Fantastic - pure gold. Blimey you've got a lot of amazing listening ahead.
Progressive Rock stations played epics. Love you guys and Happy Anniversary.
Elton Open his early 70s tour with funeral. I saw it at the Forum. Quite a concert.
gerry greene I might’ve been there! If you mean the Forum in Montreal. The stage was dark, then the fog and the whole, fabulous mood for this epic piece. Won’t ever forget how deep, how wide, how high it stretched our souls!!✨
(This was the concert that I’d waited in line with a friend from 3am, camping out on the sidewalk, until the doors opened at 10am to sell tickets-was almost crushed to death!😲And yeah, we got great seats!)
Rionholdt Once And Future Boats Ltd Forum Los Angeles, I’m certain Elton would open with Funeral for one tour.
Hey MGG!!!! I get that. So great on so many levels. Yep...47 years ago. That means I’m 50 very soon!!!! 🤨
When I listen to this, I wonder if Mozart had a guitar, would he have created something similar....
Jean, he would have been justifiably blown away, Immediately learn how it was done and then blow us away. Cool thought!
...we would cruise around and play this non-stop...ahhh, the 70's were amazing :)
Dream Theater did a fantastic cover of this song on their Change of Seasons EP
That EP got me into Dream Theater.
Yog-Sothoth me as well. Great ep
I envy Kel for discovering all this incredible music for the first time! ;-)
Right? Incredible gifts each time I hit play.
Winston sleeps 11 hours per night since we got him at 8 weeks. Small miracles!!!!
Thank you for the compliments on the intro. We worked a bit on it to tell the story as succinctly as possible.
Hey Kel!!! Classically trained pianist turns into one of the greatest rock stars ever. Now its your turn. Go buy a couple thousand pairs of glasses n take on the reaction world!!!!
Hell yeah! Mark! Great suggestion! I can see it! I will go see it!! Peace, Phil
Hey Kel n Rich. Happy anniversary. I love your channel. I also love how you both love to be with each other. That is wonderful to see. I am also glad you got to see him. I have seen him many times in Philly. He is amazing. I love Kel's reaction to all of his early costumes from the early to mid 70s. That is the Elton that I grew up with. I need Bill and ted here. Rich and Kel if you want to see him and his "Liberace" best see Elton live at the Hollywood Bowl around 72-73. Great song. BTW his opening song at every concert I ever saw him at. I loved both your reactions. Happy Anniversary. You both should check out the movie Rocketman. You really see the early Elton. The crazy Elton of the 1970s. Great Reaction.
