What a treat. Vividly remember as a young lad parking my push bike round the back of my mate Paul’s council house to spend afternoons listening to the Moodys. What a decade the 70’s were for incredible prog music.

Alaska toughened me to survive the cold and wind... But the music kept me warm... Actually, shivering to music was better than just shivering...

Sooo right Alan. Days through to Octave = prog rock classics. I see list of great bands, great albums and very rarely see the Moodies. The group that sang about the environment (Question lp) before it became fashionalbe. The group that sang about isolation and the need for a simpler life (7th Sojourn) before it became fashionable. Moodies again ahead of the curve.
Basically, the Moody Blues created the genre of progressive rock, yet they are consistently ignored in the lists of prog rock bands on the internet. I think perhaps they lost credibility with the move to synth-pop after Pinder left the group.
I always remembered the vocals in this song. They're insane. They used to give me chills as a small child hearing those backing vocals and wondering what hellish torture they were going through to sound like that. It's otherworldly to listen to on a cold, quiet, snowy winter night. Keep up the good work.
My brother brought them home and this was maybe late 80's or 90's, but all I knew at the time was what the local pop stations were playing and the 50's stations my parents listened to. Now, some 30 years later, this is what I remember.

Old guy here. The Moody Blues were huge. In 1971 grade 11 Creative Writing class in high school, my teacher made The Moody Blues album "A Question of Balance" a class project essay worth 30% of the course credit. Yes the late 60's and early 70's were that cool, the music was that great and when you finished high school you had the equivalent of a current first year college level education. I still have a playlist called The Moody Blues Best 7 Albums. Each one is a concept album. Consecutively, from "Days of the Future Passed" to "Seventh Sojourn", there is not one bad song and many outstanding ones. You can't go wrong with any song from any of them.
This is one of best love songs ever written! If this doesn't make one's heart full, there is something wrong. That moment where you laid your head on Rich's shoulder was priceless! Then when the symphonic elements slid in, the joy was Awesome!
I've just turned 66 and they were the very first concert I had ever gone to. I think I was 16. The next concert I went to was the Doors. Also saw Janis, Canned Heat, Quicksilver Messenger Service and will never ever forget my Hendrix concert. It's been a great life of music for me.
I guess I'm the young one in the room at 63. Isn't it amazing the musical journey we've taken simply growing up, growing older and hopefully wiser, with the music we loved in our youth. About the only constant in life is our music. Our generation had the very best music. Even kids today are saying what a great time that seems to have been, and we assure them it was.
One of the greatest progressive rock bands ever. I grew up with this music. Some of the best music ever made was between 1965 - 1975. Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, The moody blues. Crosby Stills and Nash and PINK FLOYD.

I first heard this on a very low-fidelity, battery powered, record player in 1967. It's been a favorite ever since. I saw them live in the '90's, with a full orchestra, on their Red Rocks tour. Kel's reaction brought tears to my eyes, just as the live experience did. The sonic wonderment can be overwhelming.

This was my Mom's favorite song. we did our Mother /son dance at my wedding to this . Dressed in a white tux. I kept it a secret until the music started to what we were dancing to. She started crying she was so happy. I miss you Mom I'm glad I was able to take you to see them play a couple times . Especially with the Orchestra.

Grew up listening to this song. Old transistor radio, an ear piece, on WGR 55 in Buffalo NY would sign off every night at 11 PM. This song would play, then the Canadian and American anthems. Learned 3 songs that way
I cry nearly every time I hear this song. It's eerily beautiful. The flute just adds that little bit of renaissance sound that gives me chills. Yes similar to my reaction when I first heard Nights in White Satin on radio Luxembourg in 1967 as a teen...Love that voice and the music is so enthralling like is that heaven and is that an angel singing....wow to that flute interlude....oh it sure is heaven...after that I bought the single....never really saw Justin Hayward until a few months later on TV...blinking heck it is an angel look at him...he looks as lovely as his voice....been hooked on the Moody Blues since.
I saw the Moody Blues in 1971. I saw them perform this song and others with Mike Pinder on his custom double keyboard Mellotron and a real double string quartet. When they did Nights in White Satin it was absolutely magnificent, majestic! We all had tears in our eyes afterwards. Nobody said a word all the way home. One of the very best concert moments in my life.
The Moody Blues are still my favorite group of all time. The back up band for this album was the London Festival Orchestra,which is why the live recordings aren't the same. You really need to listen to the whole album.
Btw, what Rich refers to as the "extended" or "full" version is wrong. The poem at the end (Breathe deep...) is actually a separate track called Late Lament. DJs started playing them paired together ages ago and it's just stuck in people's mind that it's one piece, but it's not.

I've always loved this song. I played flute while in high school, and kept at it for a while when I graduated. I told myself I would learn the solo flute part of this song, and I did. This is one of, if not the greatest father's day gifts I have ever received. When I was just a little kid in the 70's, my dad didn't like much music or entertainment, but he loved The Moody Blues, and his favorite song by a mile was Nights in White Satin. He had an 8-track tape player in his car, and the only tape he had or wanted was The Moody Blues Greatest Hits. We heard it over and over for years, and it never seemed to get old for him. He passed away twenty years ago last month, and seeing someone hear this song and enjoy it so much on Father's Day just brought back so many emotions for me. Thanks so much for posting this video!!!

That song is off of their first real album "Days of Future Passed" where they worked with an orchestra. That and their next 6 albums are pure gold. The 2-disc compilation "This Is the Moody Blues" is a great summary of those years.

It hooked me (though I didn’t discover The Moodies till 1982). Days Of Future Passed, as the title suggests is timeless. The days come and go in 2020 just the same as they did in 1967. Even though I was fifteen years down the line the music of this LP simply evokes many feelings and emotions I was experiencing as a twelve year old schoolboy.In my subconscious I feel I may have heard some of this at that time. There was so much going on musically and even your classmates would discuss the songs that appeared on Top Of The Pops the previous evening...oh what memories...thank God for the music and those who blessed us with it.
The first time I heard this, I was a girl who lived on a Place in Idaho. Our DJ at KEEP radio loved this music, and he was broadcasting this from the album Days of Future Passed in July 1968. That's 4 years before it became #2 to Stairway to Heaven. I love this one the most. So much so that I wrote my chapter 26 and listened to this over and over. It's Moody Blues mood music.

This was my Mom's favorite song. we did our Mother /son dance at my wedding to this . Dressed in a white tux. I kept it a secret until the music started to what we were dancing to. She started crying she was so happy. I miss you Mom I'm glad I was able to take you to see them play a couple times . Especially with the Orchestra.

Grew up listening to this song. Old transistor radio, an ear piece, on WGR 55 in Buffalo NY would sign off every night at 11 PM. This song would play, then the Canadian and American anthems. Learned 3 songs that way
I cry nearly every time I hear this song. It's eerily beautiful. The flute just adds that little bit of renaissance sound that gives me chills. Whoever wrote it was definitely psychically connected to me. It is so one of my stories. I feel as if I could just die during the chorus. Thank you for reacting to the long play version!!!

"Hauntingly beautiful" gets tossed around a lot, but this earned it.
I had forgotten about the spoken narrative, but as soon as it started, it all came back to me.
This is one of the songs that causes me to think of my mum. She turns 85 in a few weeks, and over the decades we’ve seen Moody Blues live together 2x. If I have the stamina, when that day comes, I will sing this at her memorial, and hopefully others will join with me.

Yes similar to my reaction when I first heard Nights in White Satin on radio Luxembourg in 1967 as a teen...Love that voice and the music is so enthralling like is that heaven and is that an angel singing....wow to that flute interlude....oh it sure is heaven...after that I bought the single....never really saw Justin Hayward until a few months later on TV...blinking heck it is an angel look at him...he looks as lovely as his voice....been hooked on the Moody Blues since.

I saw the Moody Blues in 1971. I saw them perform this song and others with Mike Pinder on his custom double keyboard Mellotron and a real double string quartet. When they did Nights in White Satin it was absolutely magnificent, majestic! We all had tears in our eyes afterwards. Nobody said a word all the way home. One of the very best concert moments in my life.
It did make me cry a few times, I've always gotten goosebumps and still do. Just so overwhelming.

The Moody Blues are still my favorite group of all time. The back up band for this album was the London Festival Orchestra,which is why the live recordings aren't the same. You really need to listen to the whole album.
On the Threshold of a Dream is my favorite by them. Great entire album. Powerful song!

Btw, what Rich refers to as the "extended" or "full" version is wrong. The poem at the end (Breathe deep...) is actually a separate track called Late Lament. DJs started playing them paired together ages ago and it's just stuck in people's mind that it's one piece, but it's not.

First time I heard this album I was with a bunch of friends sitting around a table smoking pot,passing the joint around. Reminds me of good times with friends long gone. Being a teenager in the late 60’s-early 70’s was a good time to be young. I’ve always loved the Moody Blues.❤️❤️❤️

I've always loved this song. I played flute while in high school, and kept at it for a while when I graduated. I told myself I would learn the solo flute part of this song, and I did. Soooo long ago, but brings back very happy memories. I shut my eyes, and just soaked it up. Thanks for doing this masterpiece!

This is one of, if not the greatest father's day gifts I have ever received. When I was just a little kid in the 70's, my dad didn't like much music or entertainment, but he loved The Moody Blues, and his favorite song by a mile was Nights in White Satin. He had an 8-track tape player in his car, and the only tape he had or wanted was The Moody Blues Greatest Hits. We heard it over and over for years, and it never seemed to get old for him. He passed away twenty years ago last month, and seeing someone hear this song and enjoy it so much on Father's Day just brought back so many emotions for me. Thanks so much for posting this video!!!

My favorite song from my favorite album of all time. This is the most beautiful classic rock song ever. The Moody Blues, like Jethro Tull, always make me happy. That song is off of their first real album "Days of Future Passed" where they worked with an orchestra. That and their next 6 albums are pure gold. The 2-disc compilation "This Is the Moody Blues" is a great summary of those years.

It hooked me (though I didn’t discover The Moodies till 1982). Days Of Future Passed, as the title suggests is timeless. The days come and go in 2020 just the same as they did in 1967. Even though I was fifteen years down the line the music of this LP simply evokes many feelings and emotions I was experiencing as a twelve year old schoolboy.In my subconscious I feel I may have heard some of this at that time. There was so much going on musically and even your classmates would discuss the songs that appeared on Top Of The Pops the previous evening...oh what memories...thank God for the music and those who blessed us with it.

The first time I heard this, I was a girl who lived on a Place in Idaho. Our DJ at KEEP radio loved this music, and he was broadcasting this from the album Days of Future Passed in July 1968. That's 4 years before it became #2 to Stairway to Heaven.
I love this one the most. So much so that I wrote my chapter 26 and listened to this over and over. It's Moody Blues mood music.
