The guitarist with the long blonde hair is Davey Johnstone who has been with Elton since 1971. Drummer Nigel Olsson has been with him since 1972. Along with the late Dee Murray they have been the core of his band throughout his career.

Where to start. This was FANTASTIC live. But really, you must listen to the studio version. In fact, you should do a special listen to the entire Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. Please. Maybe one side at a time? It’s one of those albums where you need to experience the whole thing. It is a masterpiece. A. Masterpiece. One of the greatest of all time. Period. Elton John in the 70’s was bigger than anyone. And he ROCKED. People today think of his quieter, softer songs from the 80’s. Easy listening. But nothing compares to the brilliance of the rock he put out in the early 70’s. “Madman Across The Water”, “Saturday Night’s Alright”, “Levon”, “Ballad of Danny Bailey”…… far too many to list. Jump down the rabbit hole. You will be blown away. And Bernie Taupin must also be mentioned. Elton John wouldn’t be who he is if not for Taupin. A genius lyricist.

He had it all. Concert pianist, composer, phenomenal singer, a great lyricist to write with. And, in a 70s time filled with colorful characters, he stood out as a colorful character. Captain Fantastic has been grabbing our attention for my entire life of music awareness. He'll break your heart, make you smile, cause you to get up and dance, get you in a fight on a Saturday night, and will generally keep you entertained any time you tune in.

What the heck just happened, you ask? Why, you just came across one of the biggest stars in rock/pop history is all. You’ve hit a morherlode, Salvo. As you read, THE biggest solo star in US rock history…. Snd I would imagine in his native land as well. MASSIVE in the 70’s. Knowing your taste, you should set yourself the marvelous task of delving into his discography. Start with Goodbye Yellowbrick Road, which this performance was from.

As soon as you started the video, I started mourning how you had missed a wonderful atmospheric intro that did a wonderful job of setting up the environment of being in a wind-swept graveyard.
Now that you've encountered the live concert performance energy of this pair of songs, I highly recommend that you listen to the studio version of it from "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".

Don’t pass up listening to some of the studio tracks. Elton’s albums were meticulously crafted and engineered.
Also, earlier live performances from his younger days are worth a look. He was a trouper who toured extensively in his, ahem, later years.
I’ve seen him 4 times, first in 1974. Massive talent.
I would suggest listening to Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy as it is an autobiographical reference to Elton and Bernie Taupin, who wrote all the lyrics. Bernie lived in the country, Elton embraced the limelight.

I loved when you said,"I thought Elton John was going to be slower"! The MAGIC of many 70's bands was that they made soft, melodic, elegant songs with extremely talented musicians and song writers. Better than any other generation or decade. The culture of the time wanted a lot of mellow, happy songs. But when it came time to ROCK and ROCK HARD, many of the "softer" bands and other genres like prog rock, stepped up and just SHREDDED! Much of this showed up in concerts. Eagles. Little River Band, Jackson Browne, Loggins and Messina, all made their way with wonderfully crafted ballads and "soft rock" songs. But when it was time to get the audience standing, dancing and screaming, they delivered with a powerhouse sound not unlike the hard driving bands like The Who or Led Zep.

I'm grateful you chose to listen to this one by EJ. At the same time, I'm disappointed you didn't start with the studio version. It's a sonic masterpiece and quite dramatic, but a lot of that is lost in subsequent live versions of it. I'd even detour & take a longer route home to listen to more of this classic. Got the album in my Vinyl collection. Elton grew up not far from where I lived & he was everywhere in the 70's & 80's. OH MY!! Welcome to the genius that is Elton John!! I've been following Elton since the 70's. You have no idea how deep of a rabbit hole THIS is!! Elton is a classically trained pianist, playing since he was a child - a prodigy actually. The coming together of lyricist Bernie Taupin and musical composer Elton John was a match made in heaven for the musical world. I don't even know where to start with making suggestions as to what to listen to - Elton has a VERY EXTENSIVE catalogue of music that spans DECADES! Since you started with Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (this performance was fire!) - I do suggest you listen to the studio version of this - it will blow your mind! Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a masterpiece double album. Tumbleweed Connection, which is vintage (1970) Elton John, is a masterpiece as well. There are others too. Might I suggest YOUR SONG (studio version, 1970) since it was Elton's first international top 10 charted single. It's a touching love song, with such a pretty melody and beautiful lyrics. There are songs that are bangers and songs that will make you cry...can't wait to follow you on your journey as you discover this brilliant music!!

Fantastic pick for your first listen to Sir Elton! Such an amazing artist with an almost endless catalogue. There are so many places you can go from here, madman across the water, levon, someone save my life tonight but hands down my favorite will always be burn down the mission. It's a deep cut that doesn't get enough love but is absolutely fantastic and one that I know Elton loves himself. I think that song would make a great reaction vid because it may introduce a lot of viewers to some of his lesser known tracks! Fantastic job as always, keep it up!❤

Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road is an amazing album front to back. Twice. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" "Tiny Dancer" are great ballads. But there are so many hits, and you can hardly do wrong with any of them.

Oh hell yes!! 🥳 Shout out to Robert!! 👊🏽
This is the way to start Sir Elton John!! ❤
Go earlier, Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across the Water albums to experience the Taupin/John masterpieces.
EJ spans 7 decades, so there isn't anything you won't like.
My bro would roll a doob, and we'd plug into this album. 🔥
Blonde, tall, thin, next to EJ-lead guitar is Davey Johnston and top drum, dark hair, no glasses is Nigel Olsson, I had such a crush on him. 😂
Both together with EJ from way back when...
Blessed to have seen EJ 4 times, absolutely 1 of my fav artists. ❤

Others will say this too, but listen to this as the original studio recording. You can really appreciate the original band.

His early stuff are still my favorites of his! He truly had a band with him and most of those songs were co-written with his lyrisist( poet) Bernie Taupen!

My favorite Elton John song! I saw him in 1975 at Dodger Stadium! We were in High School and loved everything Elton John did! He is and always will be one of the most talented Singer/ songwriter I used to crank up this song and just enjoyed the music so much!

Had the good fortune to see him twice at MSG in the 70s while I was in high school. This song was his opener.
Band much more electric live than on the studio recordings. Also, the second time I saw him was when John Lennon came on stage.
That was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
    They sang :
whatever gets you through the night, Lucy in the sky with Diamond and I saw her standing there.
I thought the roof was going to cave in.
Elton - one of the greatest live showmen of all time.

Maravilloso concierto. Aun así prefiero al Elton John de los 70. Sus canciones son maravillosas con su sencilla voz y su sencillo y alucinante piano.

The only reason I would watch a video of a live performance would be to see what the band/act looked like at the time it was recorded. Very few live performances compare with the recordings. Especially with songs from the '60s and the '70s. If this were Elton in 1973, I might had watched it.

These players in the band are the players that have always played on his songs. They are phenomenal.
Please go down the rabbit hole. It is like no other and it’s deep.
He did the soundtrack for “The Lion King”.
And played a song he’d rewrote at Princess Diana’s funeral. He’s kind of a big deal.
First, listen to his earlier stuff. It’s the best. “Tiny Dancer” is brilliant. Your best bet is to stick with the studio versions. For instance, the song you just listened to came out in 1973. Listen to the studio version. John was young. And his range will really blow you away.
