The name of the band Sixpence None the Richer comes from a book by C. S. Lewis called Mere Christianity.[5] A little boy asks his father if he can get a sixpence-a very small amount of English currency in use at the time-to go and get a gift for his father. The father gladly accepts the gift and he's really happy with it, but he also realizes that he's not any richer for the transaction. C.S. Lewis was comparing that to his belief that God has given him, and us, the gifts that we possess, and to serve him the way we should, we should do it humbly-realizing how we got the gifts in the first place.

I love this band. I first saw them on a Christian music video channel and bought their album and then a few years later I saw them in person doing a tour of Christian book stores with a short acoustic set. One of the songs they did was "Kiss Me" from their then, newest album. As soon as I heard it I thought this had hit written all over it. Sure enough, a few months later it was re-released to a wider audience and then put in a movie and it became as big a hit as I expected. The teaming of musician/songwriter Matt Slocum and singer Leigh Nash has made many wonderful songs but this one just has the best hook of them all. At the bookstore I was able to talk to Leigh and she was as sweet in person as her voice would make you believe. I got to see them a year or so later with the full band at a bigger venue and they put on a fantastic show. I'm so glad you got to this group and hope to see you react to some other Christian bands from the 90s that crossed over into the mainstream as well like Jars of Clay, Switchfoot, and Lifehouse.
This band (Six pence none the Richer) was considered a Christians band along the lines of (Jars of Clay) and those type of bands of late 90's early 2000's
A perfect song to follow up this one is from 1996 - "Lovefool" by the Cardigans. A similar vibe and voice tone in the female lead singer so it could be a Female Friday reaction!
Sixpence None the Richer (also known as Sixpence) is an American alternative rock band that formed in New Braunfels, Texas, and eventually settled in Nashville, Tennessee. They are best known for their songs "Kiss Me" and "Breathe Your Name" and their covers of "Don't Dream It's Over" and "There She Goes". The name of the band is inspired by a passage from the book Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis. The band received two Grammy Award nominations, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "Kiss Me" and Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album for Sixpence None the Richer (1997). Vocalist Leigh Nash described the origin of the band's name on the Late Show with David Letterman: It comes from a book by C. S. Lewis called Mere Christianity. A little boy asks his father if he can get a sixpence-a very small amount of English currency in use at the time-to go and get a gift for his father. Guitarist/songwriter Matt Slocum met Leigh Nash in the early 1990s. They recorded a demo, which circulates as "The Original Demos", with bassist T.J. Behling at Verge Music Works recording studio in Dallas, and eventually an album, The Fatherless and the Widow, for the independent label REX Music in 1993. After adding more members, the band toured in support of The Fatherless and The Widow. The band released This Beautiful Mess in 1995. In 1997, the group signed to Steve Taylor's label Squint Entertainment and released a self-titled album, which slowly began garnering attention from a wider audience in the mainstream industry. In 1998, "Kiss Me" was released as a single, propelling Sixpence None the Richer into the national pop spotlight. The next year, the band followed up "Kiss Me" with a cover of The La's' "There She Goes". Sixpence appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and numerous morning talk shows. The band had a follow-up album ready to release, but their label Squint Entertainment started to fall apart, leaving the band in limbo for several years. Finally, Squint Entertainment folded and that album, Divine Discontent, was released in October 2002. On February 26, 2004, Matt Slocum announced that the group had disbanded.
This song comes from the movie, “She’s All That” and Usher makes one of his first appearances. It’s a Cinderella story of a rich popular teenager who makes a bet with a friend that he can get Laney Boggs to get in enough shape to be invited to the prom by this popular boy. It’s a great movie and you should watch it on Friday. I love this song but there are some other great dance songs in it!

Great reaction, thanks. Other 90s bands with female leads (with beguiling voices!) that you should do are The Sundays "Here's Where the Story Ends" and "Summertime" and 10,000 Maniacs "These Are Days" and "Because the Night (unplugged)." (10,000 also did a great version of Roxy Music's "More Than This," which you recently did.)
@@DavidSmith-pg1ob I think a lot of those 90s bands had a very similar vibe. I was thinking The Railway Children (late 80s, actually) sounded very similar, too - "In the Meantime" and "Every Beat of the Heart." I like the Gin Blossoms, but all their songs sound the same to me. 🤔
This song might not have had 'a lot' but to me it does have the perfect amount of all the right things: mood, words, vocals, guitar, accordion, playfulness. The balance this song has is what makes it perfect. I love it.
I'm somewhat jealous of my older brother for having great songs like this coming out while he was in high school. I was never one to spend much time at school dances, but that might have been different if the playlists were filled with '90s music -- Matchbox 20, Savage Garden, Goo Goo Dolls, etc.
This was a great sweetly romantic little song. Nice choice. Their other mainstream hit, There She Goes, is just as great. BTW, the band took their name from a line in the CS Lewis book, Mere Christianity. Blessings ❤
oh, LOVE this band. they only had a couple songs get a lot of air-play, but some lesser known songs I really like are Angeltread and Within a Room Somewhere. they actually have a darker tone than this song
A rather overrated comment, because for some weird reason everybody is infatuated with the word “underrated” and constantly calling everything underrated, it’s annoying as hell
Kiss Me is featured in the teen comedy from 1990, “She’s All That” . Clips from the movie are in this video. Yes that is Usher, he is in the movie along side. the two actors sitting on the bench with the band. Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook. Thanks for reacting to Kiss Me.
LOVE This Song, and haven't thought about it in So Long. So happy to hear it again! Lovely Song, and So Glad You Guys BOTH Like it Also! Great Reaction, You Guys! :)
This song is evocative of magic! "Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance - kiss me!" Happy - Young - Full of possibilities - just plain FUN. I hope that at least once in everyone's life they have a magical evening like this song portrays. I've had mine, and they still light up my life! Great song - great reaction - Thanks!
Hey Amber, you asked us to leave a comment about how Sixpence None the Richer got their name. The band actually got their name from a passage in C.S. Lewis's book 'Mere Christianity.' In the book, Lewis writes about a scenario where a poor family gives their last sixpence to a child as a gift, emphasizing the idea of giving generously even when you have little.
Me and my buddy was driving to pick up another friend and his new girlfriend when this song came out. I remember it coming on the radio and my buddy and his girlfriend in the back seat started singing it to each other. Made me want to vomit.😂
So I won't reiterate the name that so many have already commented about apart that it comes from a place of humbly giving what you have to God in terms of talents and gifts because God was the source of your talent or gift in the first place. I started with their debut album back in 1994 called The Fatherless and The Widow which was rather folk, acoustic, coffeehouse type alternative (key song: Trust). Their sound was way different with a more rock and artsy alternative on This Beautiful Mess released in 1995 (fave songs on that album: Love, Salvation & the Fear of Death; Within a Room Somewhere; Disconnect). Many of these would make for some good "female Friday" songs. Kiss Me was one of a couple of big hits on their '97 self-titled album along with a cover of "There She Goes". They had changed record companies from R.E.X. records on the first two to Squint Entertainment, a record label started and run by musician and songwriter Steve Taylor in 1997. Steve Taylor would also be an excellent unusual Christian artist to listen to some songs/albums.
How about a new artist guys, Slade. You’ve reacted to their main rivals from the ‘70’s with the brilliant Sweet, now you need to hear Slade who were the 70’s biggest selling singles artist in the uk including 6 number 1s…3 of them entering at No.1. Apart from their Christmas hit which still makes the chart 50yrs later…Cum on Feel the Noize is one of their most popular ones
Its always been a song I liked and I liked the band too. The name of the group, as others have said, came from the writing of CS Lewis, the sixpence representing a small value coin. It was an interesting and much loved small silver coin. The old British currency system was divided into pounds , shillings and pence (the pence, being denoted by a d) So the sixpence was 6d. In 1971 a new decimal currency system, with new coins was introduced with 100 pence in the pound and new pence were denoted by a p instead of the old d. However the sixpence was retained and continued to be used in the new system until about 1980, but its value was 2.5p (£0.025). So the sixpence was 6d or 2.5p. Even although it was worth 2.5p in the new system, everyone continued to call it a "sixpence". I still have a few of them. 🙂
You commented on the accordion sounding beautiful in this song... One of my favorite songs with accordion is Marc Anthony's song "You Sang To Me". There are multiple versions of the song... The short "radio edit" version had much of the accordion part edited out. The longer versions have more. It comes in towards the end of the song.
A band that epitomizes the 90s for me -- with Harriet Wheeler's stunning voice and those jangly guitars -- is The Sundays! Check out "Good Bye"... "Summertime" ... "She"... and the haunting, lovely "Monochrome".. about a historical event (see if you can guess what it is.)
The band is from New Braunfels, Texas and broke up in 2004. They were an American Christian alternative rock band. The girl lead singer joined the band, 10,000 Maniacs apparently. This song is the main song in the movie, She's All That.
That's not an accordion, it is called a concertina, it is very easy to mistake the two but an accordion has the keyboard and the concertina doesn't. Also the accordion sounds harsher, while the concertina has a very airy sound. Also yes Jay that was Usher in the video, this song was featured in a movie called "She's All That" with a ton of actors who would go on to be very famous as well as one extremely famous musician name Usher.
OH MAN! This song IS my high school days. I feel young again! I was born in '80 so my childhood had ALL the glory of that era (movies, music, tv) and then my teens were so different and unique with all the 90s stuff (this song, Alanis Morrisette, Nirvana)... we were also the first generation to be 'latch key kids' - we had the tv as our babysitter. Movies/music/tv are my greatest passion; they molded me into who I turned out to be.
The 90's were the best time for women as singer-songwriters and lead singers in bands!! There's Shirley Manson in Garbage, Tori Amos, Natalie Imbruglia, this band, Verucka Salt, The Breeders, Natalie Merchant, and on and on!!
Sixpence started as a Christian pop/rock band from Texas before moving to Nashville. This was their breakthrough to a more popular genre. It was a huge hit. Beautiful song, so well put together.
I too love this song. Sixpence None The Richer was one of my favorite band in the 90's. They were considered a Christian band, and recorded a bunch of albums. They became known for this song, which was featured in the film She's All That. They had a couple other hits that were cover songs, including You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.
As a kid growing up in the 90s I was very lucky to do a lot of travelling to different countries for holidays, and if there was a Planet Hollywood in the area (global restaurant chain similar to Hard Rock Cafe, mostly all gone now) we would always make a point in going. They always had a playlist of music videos and while there were quite a few songs, the playlist was always the same. There are a few songs that every time I hear it always takes me back to Planet Hollywood in some corner or the world, having an amazing time with my family. This song is one of them. Off the top of my head I can think of a few more. ‘Lovefool’ by The Cardigans, ‘There She Goes’ by The La’s, ‘Just A Girl’ by No Doubt, ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ by Carl Douglas, and the Ghostbusters theme by Ray Parker Jr. But this song probably evokes the strongest memories.
Six pence is British change. I don’t know the exact value but it would be like saying I got fifty cents, but it doesn’t make me richer. A quote from CS Lewis. I actually saw this group many years ago at a Christian Rock Festival. It reminds me of my childhood chasing lightning bugs, concerts in the park, and jillions of stars against the moonlight.
one of my favorite bands, and one of my favorite songs FROM said band!! glad you enjoyed it.... strictly speaking, the fellar on the right end of the screen is playing an english concertina Concertinas are a group of instruments similar but distinct from accordions. The difference being that the buttons on a concertina operate parallel to the bellows of the instrument whereas the buttons of an accordion operate perpendicular to the bellows. The sound OF the concertina in the song is authentic (probably produced a bit in the study, but still).
This was HUGE when i was a teenager. I just have to close my eyes, listen to this song and i'm back in this era :D Music is the closest thing to a time machine.

Love this sign until this day
I love this band.
And more recently NEEDTOBREATHE.
Noooooo Christian bands please!
Too late. They've already done it.
Great choices, maybe Newsboys, too.
Also classic DC Talk
This band (Six pence none the Richer) was considered a Christians band along the lines of (Jars of Clay) and those type of bands of late 90's early 2000's
Song gives you warm fuzzy feels sprinkled with pixie dust. What a magical song ✨
A perfect song to follow up this one is from 1996 - "Lovefool" by the Cardigans. A similar vibe and voice tone in the female lead singer so it could be a Female Friday reaction!
I absolutely love this song…it has got to be one of the sweetest songs ever written…the lyrics are so romantic….love it❤❤️❤️
Their covers of Don’t Dream it’s Over and There She Goes are inspired
Leigh Nash has a simply magical voice and.............those eyes!
Vocalist Leigh Nash described the origin of the band's name on the Late Show with David Letterman:
It comes from a book by C. S. Lewis called Mere Christianity. A little boy asks his father if he can get a sixpence-a very small amount of English currency in use at the time-to go and get a gift for his father.
😂 I always like to point out how my prom used the same venue as the prom in the movie. We didn't have anywhere near the same budget of course.
The song was also included on Dawson's Creek's first soundtrack in April 1999, which is where i knew it from.
I don’t think I’ve seen you react to this but my favorite song from that era, by Anna Nalick “Breathe (2am). Definitely a great song
I love Sixpence but my favourite song by them (by far) is their cover of the La's song "There She Goes". It's well worse checking out.

I think Amber would like "She's so high" by Tal Bachman.
I met this band in their early years before they recorded this song. They were very down to earth and nice
You guys need to check out “These Are Days” by 10,000 Maniacs. The lead singer was Natalie Merchant who also had a great solo career. And you’d love her solo song “Wonder”
One of the most beautiful melody in 90's.Thank you guys for point out this masterpiece
This song also reminded me of "Hey Jealousy" by the Gin Blossoms, another 90s tune they may enjoy! Not a female lead, but a similar vibe.
+1 for the Sundays Summertime
YESSSSSS, love The Sundays - "Here's Where The Story Ends" is exquisite! They did an awesome cover of "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones, too 😊
@@DavidSmith-pg1ob I think a lot of those 90s bands had a very similar vibe. I was thinking The Railway Children (late 80s, actually) sounded very similar, too - "In the Meantime" and "Every Beat of the Heart." I like the Gin Blossoms, but all their songs sound the same to me. 🤔
Yes The Sunday is a must. Talk about voices.
"Lovefool" by the Cardigans is another great 90's pop song like this one. One of my guilty pleasures. Jay will love the bassline!
Leigh Nash (neé Bingham) has the most amazing voice and Matt Slocum on guitar is wonderful. Their album 'This Beautiful Mess' is a masterwork.
For a great almost-90s song. Sam Brown and Stop
This song might not have had 'a lot' but to me it does have the perfect amount of all the right things: mood, words, vocals, guitar, accordion, playfulness. The balance this song has is what makes it perfect. I love it.
Such an amazing song! A 90’s gem 😊
I'm somewhat jealous of my older brother for having great songs like this coming out while he was in high school. I was never one to spend much time at school dances, but that might have been different if the playlists were filled with '90s music -- Matchbox 20, Savage Garden, Goo Goo Dolls, etc.
"Here's Where The Story Ends" by THE SUNDAYS is a very similar song. Also from the Nineties.
Check out their other songs, “there she goes”, and “breathe your name”. Great reaction video. Yes we love our 90s!
“She’s all that” was a huge 90’s heart throb movie and this song was made for that movie which is why they played scenes from the movie in the video
This was a great sweetly romantic little song. Nice choice. Their other mainstream hit, There She Goes, is just as great.
BTW, the band took their name from a line in the CS Lewis book, Mere Christianity.
Blessings ❤
The 90's were awesome 👌
Love this song glad you covered it
Weird Al Yankovic and They Might Be Giants have both made great use of accordions.
Need to dive into some Weird Al for sure...
oh, LOVE this band. they only had a couple songs get a lot of air-play, but some lesser known songs I really like are Angeltread and Within a Room Somewhere. they actually have a darker tone than this song
If you are loving the 90s and the female artists from that decade you got to listen to Tanya Donelly's band Belly and Juliana Hatfield. Thanks.
A rather underrated band. Great song, beautifully arranged & love the bass line in it.
Great contemporary Christian band from the 90s. "Breathe" from the multi-artist "Streams" album is a great song.
This song came out my senior year of high school. My English teacher loved it so much that she would play it at least once a day during class
Beautiful in every way. So evocative: under the milky twilight. I am 75 and have loved this song for years.
"If you needed somebody" by Bad Company. Great powerful vocal and the guitar solo cries.
If y’all seen “She’s All That” then this song was a staple for it. It’s definitely a 90’s song. A instant classic
From the movie “She’s All That” with Freddie Prince Jr. And Rachael Leigh Cook. Total classic
Leigh Nash reminds me of a gorgeous little fairy, so pretty, such an amazing and ethereal voice.
Being smaller and handheld, it is called a concertina. Great song. Check out "There She Goes" next,
Correct. I was looking for a comment that mentioned it.
The 90's were the best time for women as singer-songwriters and lead singers in bands!! There's Shirley Manson in Garbage, Tori Amos, Natalie Imbruglia, this band, Verucka Salt, The Breeders, Natalie Merchant, and on and on!!
You can add Margo Timmins of Cowboy Junkies and the Wilson sisters of Heart.
This song was in the movie "She's All That" with Freddie Prince Jr. & Rachael Leigh Cook. Very sweet film!
This song was in the soundtrack of the movie "She's All That" Freddie Prinze Jr, Rachael Leigh Cook, Lil' Kim, Gabrielle Union, Usher. Among others.
THERE SHE GOES is a good one from em that really highlights her airy beautiful voice
There's this melancholic undertone to this song that I've always loved
I just love this song. Man, the 90's was just amazing for "alternative" music. It literally exploded. Love y'all and God Bless.
Amazing song!!
You've got to check out the band Toad The Wet Sprocket... start with "All I Want"
there is a simplicity and gratitude, like 2 kindred spirits meeting
Great song, and I've always loved her unique voice.
Hard not be happy after hearing this song. Been listening to this song for over 20 years and it still makes me happy.
1/40 of a Pound sterling.
I had an absolute crush on this singer when I first saw this. 😍
love "breathe your name" another sweet song by Sixpence None The Richer
one of my favorite bands, and one of my favorite songs FROM said band!! glad you enjoyed it....
strictly speaking, the fellar on the right end of the screen is playing an english concertina
Concertinas are a group of instruments similar but distinct from accordions. The difference being that the buttons on a concertina operate parallel to the bellows of the instrument whereas the buttons of an accordion operate perpendicular to the bellows. The sound OF the concertina in the song is authentic (probably produced a bit in the study, but still).
I've always had an appreciation for "well crafted pop" of all types, and this song is that.
This was HUGE when i was a teenager. I just have to close my eyes, listen to this song and i'm back in this era :D Music is the closest thing to a time machine.
