  • In this video I cover all the basic issues when it comes to aquarium fish: parasites, white spot (ich), fungus, bacteria and sicknesses as well as my favourite aquarium treatments to use.
    Let me know in the comments if you would like more in depth videos on individual illnesses and more in depth looks at the medications I use to treat my tropical fish.

    Thanks for this video. After watching this it dawned on me the stuff I had - in case - may not be safe for my shrimp and seems to probably not be. Checked NT Labs website on theirs and they say "working concentration of the product is non-toxic to snails, shrimp " thought it was an important angle to check. 👍🏻

    Such an important video!! THANK YOU Matt ❤️❤️ saved this one too 🙏 that type of medication seems easy to figure out witch use, since the names says it very clearly what its for. Medication is forbidden to sell to aquarium here in Denmark but we can buy some pond stuff, just not think it is quite so clear what to use it for.
    Also I have never seen medication for swimbladder issues. Normally people here just says it can not be cured. Wish I could buy that stuff in Dk.

      @@FishShopMatt Your fish videos have been wonderful with absolute perfect information given in a easy to understand manor. The two filter videos were excellent with the surface skimmer having me calling the company to tell them that I can not find one in the U.S. and asking if they were planning to bring them to the U.S. saying that I found them on your new channel. Then this one. I have kept fish since 1975 (Fluval was a baby company with AquaClear in the US) and from 1990-1995 I worked with three small importers. Rented and serviced 35 tanks all freshwater (My passion now called nano) the smallest 65 gal (240 ltr?) to 380 gal (around 1,500 lir). I had a small stint at doing importing as a small personal business. Currently I am enjoying the possible final tanks I will have before blindness removes the ability to properly care for them. I know what I am saying when I say that I wish I had a quarter the ability to talk about this hobby/passion you are able to show.

    Great video content 👌 informative, beginner friendly and fun. I have noticed in my years of fish keeping that treatment manufacturers don't really explain about water displacement and also how much water a filter holds so quite often people could easily be overdosing massively!
    Example: minus 20 kilos of gravel, 10 kilos of hardscape, 4-5cm below the rim fill line, etc. 🤔 Anyway, enough babbling! Thanks again for another great video and can't wait to see what's next. Don't know how you find the time with a new baby and working at the shop. Hats off to you 👏

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you ❤️ I'm not sure how I'm finding time either 🤣 yes you are correct with displacement I believe that a lot of companies take into account a bit of wiggle room with their treatments but it's definitely worth being aware of.

  • @rickbooher8224
    @rickbooher8224 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Like the video very informative however there is one more treatment which is a general treat that is aquarium salt. It aids in fin damage and some fungus. Helps to promote healing. I have used aquarium salt as my first line of treatment and isolation as the second. I try to avoid antibacterial mess as they also kill off the good bacteria that is so important in the nitrogen cycle. Quarantining new fish with salt is a good preventive for new fish and not as evasive as the chemical mods. However if you see fish that are quarantined show signs of continued issue you can treat with the appropriate meds. Also salt does not kill off all the good bacteria needed for the nitrogen cycle as chemical mods due. I like quarantineing fish before adding to tank as especially when getting fish or invertebrates online or places like big box stores. Plus using a smaller quarantine tank/container you won't need as much meds in the water to treat the fish because the volume is much less. Pretreatment and quarantine helps protect the fish you have already spent a lot of money on; also some meds can affect live plants and can cause die off. However this video was geared for meds use and med types I realize but aquarium salt is a good first level treat for most things and should have been mentioned. A lot of wild caught fish can have parasites so know if they are wild caught is an important piece to know as well to be more cautious and take more preventive measure before introduction into the final aquarium. Not all fish store are privy to that info nor take the care of the fish prior to customer purchase as you apparently do, and for that thank you for caring for the fish first to get them healthy and for the customer to help them have a better transition of healthy fish into their aquariums. Wished you were here in the USA near me. Like you store and the thing in your garden department outdoors for ponds.

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree, the issue I've always found with salt is certain aquarium issues are more tolerant of it than others. I have written down to do a video on salt and it's uses in the future on here.
      I've found that salt can be as much an issue for plants and filters as some chemical treatments. ❤️❤️❤️

    Ty for this! Love your videos as always with MD fish, question if 1 fish has fungal infection(white cotton stuff) and you reallllly don’t want to re-setup your quarantine tank or some bucket, is it more stressful and not worth it to use medication in your main tank for that 1 fish? Or is it harmless?

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you ❤️ I generally medicate the main aquarium, the stress of catching the fish and moving it can sometimes be worse than just treating the main tank. With some of these illnesses you may not be able to spot tiny infections that will become a bigger issue in the future, so easier to treat the whole tank in my opinion.

  • @heaven7360
    @heaven7360 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FishShopMatt I thought the bristlenose Male as he wont share his spot and we both know how derpy Cory's are lol. The 2 were quarantined and the Male removed from said tank and they seem ok now no further issues. Actually considering rehoming the pleco as its lashed out before at tank mates. So you think its possibly been a secondary thing?

      Another vote for Esha here...NT Labs treatments are also solid products.. Yet 30 odd years ago I just never had great success with Waterlife!..... But I just lacked the experience that time has brought.

    Hi mat, channels looking awesome👍.
    Just a quick question with the disease solve I see it has methylene blue in and it also says plant safe but I was always under the impression that methylene blue was not plant safe. Or shrimp safe could you shed any light on this please. I’m guessing it’s just that it’s got such a small amount in it they say to be safe. Your thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thank you

    Hi @fishshopmatt
    When I had my first tank many years ago, the treatments e.g. for whitespot turned the clear silicone green/blue - do the modern treatments still do that, or have they been modified to avoid that happening now?
    Cheers,
    Rich.

    Hi Matt, I've always wondered how to do a water change before using meds, since I have to add water conditioner to my water (to get rid of chlorine). Does the use of water conditioner (Easy Life Filter medium) during the water change impact the effectiveness of the meds? Thank you :)

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be fine to do small water changes just be gentle and careful around them. If it's their first spawn they normally don't get it correct first time anyway.

      Thanks Matt. Ive never seen eggs or fry from them before, but they do defend the same cave regularly , so I don’t think its their first outing, but i do now see about 20 free swimming fry and 2 very defensive parents. Here’s hoping for some success 🤞🏻

    I used the anti-fluke medicine around a month ago and it killed my Nerite snails but my Cherry shrimp, Amanos and Ramshorn snails were fine. Are Nerites more sensitive than my other invertebrates or did I get lucky with the rest?

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have found that certain inverts cope better with these treatments than others. With nerite snails being a varied group of snails it is probable that they were just a little bit more sensitive to the treatment.

    I want to ask.
    Do you think i can get red cherry shrimp in a 5 gallon tank with red phantom tetras.
    I know The tank is extremele small for tetras but i really want to ad some cherry shrimp.
    Do you think The tetras would eat The adults?

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooooo it would be a tricky one, I think it would be a risk as phantoms can be a bit nippy.
      If you got XL adults and created spaces that the fish couldn't get to, maybe something like the shrimp tubes you would probably get away with it.
