I would totally drive this. And it doesn't even look like it was made in 1969. It looks like it was made 20 years later. Can't believe they only made one of these
Worked in Holden Engineering Dept well after this car was conceived but remember hearing stories from the the old tradies about how many tipped their own time into this cars being well after their normal daily shift had finished. Such was their passion for this cars existence . . . . that was Holden then . . . remember those times forever as the old Fishermans bend plant is pulled apart . . . Golden Holden memories
Brett Murray Did you work on the 3-LJ GTR V8 Prototypes in 1972 ? have you any Photos of them etc and do you recall who bought the Pink and White LJ GTR Prototypes, the Orange one was Converted back to a 6 Cyl and Tendered in Feb 1975 and Brewster and Maddern in Kyabram won the Tender.
Are they actually going to tear it down or will it be repurposed for something else?....something I worry about with the Elizabeth plant I worked at for 10 years...they just seem in an awful hurry to take away any chance of using them again when they have so much potential.
Very nice car it's like the Australian version of the Lamborghini and Ferrari people around the world would be saying bloody hell Australia knows how to build cars
I remember seeing this in the Holden Musuem in Echuca back in the early 90's It was just sitting in a corner neglected. I am glad they pulled it out and fixed it up.
Oh YES! One of my favourite concept cars ever, well done to the team. :-D I'll second the desire to see this in Forza 4, along with some other classic Holdens.
That's a gel coat with glitter added. Most commonly seen on speedboats from the early 70s, on cars, not so much. (glitter gel coating was invented in South Australia, btw)
Congrats, lovely to see it bought back to it's former glory.Must have been a wild time for you blokes back then.Doing the Hurricane, organising the Torana six and getting the HQ sorted.Opportunity missed however with the GTR/X Torana. I reckon.the punters would have gone nuts for it over the Datsun 240Z.Congrats again for the resto job.Be proud of yourselves for the original 1969 effort and the preservation of something special.
I remember this car as a 10 year old.It was an absolute incredible car for it's time and has aged wonderfully.Back then there was Lambo ,Ferrari,Ford and a few others that made cars like the Muira and GT40,wow factor cars. Then Holden brings out their Hurricane concept car , a home grown WOW factor car,how good was that. The Hurricane toured the Show circuit in each state and I got to see it.Thinking of it today, This car should have been put in production then with a 253/308/350 option, and a Repco 5000 motor for A Le Mans car.Today it should be produced in carbon fibre or alloy with a 6.2 n/a v8 with the 6.2SC option. It is still a modern design and not dated.
A current 6.2 v8 wouldn't suit this car if it was built today as the 6.2 is a pushrod v8 and is such old technology. They should have used dohc 32 valve v8s in the Commodores and that's what you would expect in a car like this
I freakin' LOVE the headlights! Not too big a fan of the back tires being covered up though, and I image getting inside would take some getting used to lol.
Please release one.. It looks so cool, todays cars are either super cars that look really boring or boring cars that look really boring.. Its cool af we need something like this
@TheKrcy 1. designed and built as a one-off prototype 2. Australian built, which automatically means RHD. 3. Holden already build cars for Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, China, America, England. You just don't hear about them because they wear different badges outside Australia
Okay, I am amazed but now I have questions too. Are the ignition switches still on the left side of the steering column and do they rotate counter-clockwise on Holdens? Were controls not in metric back in the late 60's Australia? I am surprised to see controls and gauges in fahrenheit instead of celsius.
@whatmarc The ignition switch is on the right side of the steering column on all the major brands in Australia and they turn clockwise. Australia did not adopt the metric system until 1974 although some manufactures used metric measurements to display engine capacity.
@beyondtheblackstump:wasn't the car your talking about labelled the "GTR-X" concept? I thought the XU2 was going to be a XU1 follow on but with a 5.0ltr engine but GMH wouldn't back the production of a "race street car".then there was talk of the SL/R 5000 being named the XU2 but obviously didn't happen.....I may be wrong....
What's that little tv in the center? Back up camera? Or is that for the navigation system they mentioned? How would a navigation system work in 1969? Or was that not operational?
'70s Holdens were pretty awesome, too, as were the early '70s Valiant Chargers.....fun fact about the Chargers for those who don't know, btw: It's most powerful engine....was a Slant Six.....with Hemi heads! Something you wouldn't have seen in America, I don't think. =D
@whatmarc No,Australia didnt go metric till the early 70's..and with the ignition switch, they must have set it up like that, because all Holdens ignition switches turn clockwise, same as any other car.
There were design rules in 1992 brought in that meant that the very large bongo an HK Monaro could belt out a rhythm on was no longer legal to comply to noise levels. Maximum drive by sound levels at 60km/h were 92 decibels. The average car alarm puts out 100-110 decibels. In the Hurricane's day, two stock hotdog mufflers would have probably been legal on a V8
The slant six was developed in the U.S actually (225 cubic inch). The Chrysler Valiant was made in the U.S and in Australia. The Valiant pacer was the Dodge Dart there. The 245 and 265 in line six was the Aussie super engines. They had the Hemi heads.
@MooreMaryKay Look at the back end and you will think otherwise. This car was a 1960s show car, and this style predated what Chevrolet was doing with the Corvette at the time. This was something Holden did "out the back of the workshop". Their best show car to date was the EFIJY in 2006, which hit the US show scene and cleaned up in awards wherever it went
Damn I'd love to see that outfitted with some modern tech. Xenon & LED lights, LCD panel in the dash, and there must be plenty of potential improvements to the engine and the suspension, etc. Realise the concept here in the future, rather than re-building it with parts that were before its time...
this was very ahead of its time and still looks good and a reckon its worth looking into a modern version as a holden supercar that not based of something american
look how fast the head light covers opened wow what a weapon . holden should of twin turbo charged it =super car ,the GTRX was more well known . but this is oh so sexy
My father is Donald Daharsh that helped with this car as well as many, many more. GO DAD!!!! So proud of you!!!! Your two daughters Love you!!!!!!!!!!
I would totally drive this. And it doesn't even look like it was made in 1969. It looks like it was made 20 years later. Can't believe they only made one of these
Love it...go Holden! The headlights, the rear blinkers, BRILLIANT!

THIS CAR IS AMAZING. i just wish it was a mass produced model. its fucking gorgeous. a modernized version of that car would be phenomenal
@mmciau The team were able to source those wheels from Dunlop in the UK. They are an exact match for the originals
Oh YES! One of my favourite concept cars ever, well done to the team. :-D I'll second the desire to see this in Forza 4, along with some other classic Holdens.
I sat in this car at the Lilydale Show back in 1969 or 1970 it was awesome had a TV camera for reversing we thought it was straight out of the Future.
the way those eyelids drop - dope!
they should just make a bunch of them and sell them
Also agree - angles in the front looks like the lambo , but the lights duping in ( priceless)
one of the first, if not the fist car to have a reversing camera
Mr Regular should check out those headlights
That's a gel coat with glitter added. Most commonly seen on speedboats from the early 70s, on cars, not so much. (glitter gel coating was invented in South Australia, btw)

Now its time for a all new Hurricane made with the latest and greatest Technologies and materials
@Gigsy63 Hi - we were able to do this through the annotations feature by creating the hotspots and just adding the links
This needs to be on Jay Leno's Garage.
Such a sexy piece of machinery and innovation.
This has to be one of the coolest things I've seen this year! Check out all those gadgets in the car not to mention the cool pop DOWN lights!
Those are some beautiful concepts.
100% would buy this. looks amazing and Aussie!!
@TheFeralHunter The Purvis Eureak was released in 1974, The Hurricane was built in 1969.
This car should have gone in production. I remember starting school and seeing it on TV
Then wandering for years what happened to it.
I love this kind of styling and wish it would come back in some form
all i have to say is this is one sexy car
@TrueBlueAustralian This is the original car - it had a ground up restoration
they way those headlights showed up out of no where was freaking sweet

Damn straight! I used to own a '69 LC XU1. Mighty fine pocket rocket :)
That thing is sexy. It's great to see another classic being cared for.
the real batmobile of the 60's
I freakin' LOVE the headlights! Not too big a fan of the back tires being covered up though, and I image getting inside would take some getting used to lol.
those are some killer headlights, love it
what a beautiful work of art!
Please release one.. It looks so cool, todays cars are either super cars that look really boring or boring cars that look really boring.. Its cool af we need something like this
i hate holdens, (i am a ford person) but this is got to be one of the best looking cars ever made
This might be the next home build hobby car. We can only hope. At least I want it here in the good ole USA too.
I wish this is what cars looked like today!
Id love to buy one of those. To bad they probably aren't going to be made. awesome car.
Holy shit, never saw much of this concept car before, looks awesome, and rare, too!!
THIS IS JUST AWESOME TO SEE! WHAT A CAR!
@TheKrcy 1. designed and built as a one-off prototype 2. Australian built, which automatically means RHD. 3. Holden already build cars for Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, China, America, England. You just don't hear about them because they wear different badges outside Australia
The backing track is as catchy as the car! Like Borat once said ..... "IS NIIIICE!"
about time they did somthing new like this .......
Those drop down light covers are very cool.

To me the body resembles the Nova kit car from England, sold in Oz as the Purvis Eureka and the Scorpion in Godzone.
what is the name of that type of paint job? so sparkly...
What's that little tv in the center? Back up camera? Or is that for the navigation system they mentioned? How would a navigation system work in 1969? Or was that not operational?
this is a cool car.. they should take the concept and merge it with modern technology and make a beast car
'70s Holdens were pretty awesome, too, as were the early '70s Valiant Chargers.....fun fact about the Chargers for those who don't know, btw:
It's most powerful engine....was a Slant Six.....with Hemi heads! Something you wouldn't have seen in America, I don't think. =D
If you build it, they will come...
I imagine Holden have a warehouse somewhere full of toys like this,
How did the navigation work? There was no GPS back then
this holden looks badass
WOW what a crazy car. Looks better then the current GM crap.
so if the battery dies how do i get out?
and if i get a rear flat tire how do i change it?
@whatmarc No,Australia didnt go metric till the early 70's..and with the ignition switch, they must have set it up like that, because all Holdens ignition switches turn clockwise, same as any other car.
Good to see that it is still shod with the Dunlop M Series tyres!!
mike
How about the engine? Whts its top speed and acceleration?
DEM HEADLIGHS
this car is fantastic...
The V8 in that thing sounds infinitely better than any SS I've ever heard.
If only I could buy one!
The slant six was developed in the U.S actually (225 cubic inch). The Chrysler
Valiant was made in the U.S and in Australia. The Valiant pacer was the Dodge Dart there. The 245 and 265 in line six was the Aussie super engines. They had the Hemi heads.
@MementoSai you really think safety was a concern in the 60's on a concept car?
looks like the styling of the Torana GTR-X and the Purvis Eureka mixed? both of these cars are form this era
@rgre1 break the glass or lower it down?
@MooreMaryKay Look at the back end and you will think otherwise. This car was a 1960s show car, and this style predated what Chevrolet was doing with the Corvette at the time. This was something Holden did "out the back of the workshop". Their best show car to date was the EFIJY in 2006, which hit the US show scene and cleaned up in awards wherever it went
It would look amazing and futuristic until you had the bad luck to flip the car and nobody was around to unflip it.
Can you guys now make a modern version ?
It may now be time to build a Hurricane MkII... Would be very interesting to see what Holden could come up with.
Dear Holden, I have a spare flux capacitor for sale...Would go awesome in this Hurricane..Make an offer!
NOW THAT IS STOKED
A car accident happens, you flip upside down. What do you do? How do you get out?
beautiful car..... has anyone thought of redesigning the door's + roof for the today's markets........I'll Buy it, only if it a Holden.
That thing is beautiful
this is fabulous. GM Make this car!
beast
Fark yeah!
Damn I'd love to see that outfitted with some modern tech. Xenon & LED lights, LCD panel in the dash, and there must be plenty of potential improvements to the engine and the suspension, etc.
Realise the concept here in the future, rather than re-building it with parts that were before its time...
So where is now ? Back in the same place before it go restord maybe?
@Samsgarden Yes. where are you going with this though? :l
still looks awesome today. great work.. too bad they never sold them.. like every other concept car people want to buy.
this was very ahead of its time and still looks good and a reckon its worth looking into a modern version as a holden supercar that not based of something american
thats pretty damn awesome
I wish they would at least make a DIY build kit of this car like they do with the cobra and that kind of car...
unreal.
OMG.. I'm long time big fan of Lamborghini Countach, and this car have same front as my favorite Lambo... I did not know that...
Congrats from the REAL ROCKY!!!
very nice!
@MrFlyUpHigh Some production cars in Australia in the 60s had them as optional for the passengers but standard for the driver
look how fast the head light covers opened wow what a weapon . holden should of twin turbo charged it =super car ,the GTRX was more well known . but this is oh so sexy
@fuzzjunky ...yeah...only a baby V8...I learnt to drive in a HQ Kingswood station wagon that was powered by a 253
