My first Miata... a '99 NB with 98k miles. Original shifter parts. Changed out everything using this video for reference and all I can say is... DAMN! No more play in the lever, no more engine smell or heat from the shifter boot, and so little noise it's scary. I thank you, sir!
For those peeps that have an NB... please don't forget the screw underneath the ashtray. I didn't realize there was one down there and "GINGER RAGED" the console out breaking that one...
I’m 5 years late but I just watched this video to figure out how to do it. I used a flyinmiata shifter rebuild but thank you so much. You don’t understand how much you helped me.
Parts ordered. Will get this handled soon. Thanks again for helping give me the confidence to do this basic stuff. It's terrifying when I'm working on my only car with no way to drive to the auto-shop if I'm missing anything, so I really appreciate these videos. Thanks :)
Missed 2 shifts in a recent mountain road video I was working on. Bought the shifter rebuild and then watched your video and found it extremely helpful! Well done! Definitely should have more likes on this. Now if I can only find the time to edit my shifter rebuild vid, lol. Totally lost it at 6:38 (silver back gorilla)! Well edited video. I'm subbed and following your build. Keep up the good work!
Fantastic video, I was half way through the overhaul and couldn't remove the small rubber plate, thanks to you its now as clear as a bell. Wow keep up the great videos cheers Steve from New Zealand
Not me. I love being the only one who can unlock the the trunk. I don’t lock my miata because people will just cut the top to get in anyway. This way my stuff is secure in the trunk.
Greg, I am a little late but thank you for making this video. You explain things very well. Also thank you for telling me and the meat heads to calm down on torquing every 10mm bolt into aluminum. I have learned the hard way many times. Thank you for what you do and the time you take to make these.
This is the best instructional Miata video next to the other five best videos from TheCarPassionChannel I am seen and I have only watched 6 of the channels videos.
@@TheCarPassionChannel now look at where youre at. Its awesome you did so much and taught us all very well. Beginner and then advanced introduction to the miata. Just overall workmanship and great lesson on just working around a car as well. We learned with you and I couldn't be any happier to watch and learn. I'm sad only on one part. The fact that you only have 100k subscribers when there should be way more. Especially being over 1 million MX-5s built, countless times they have swapped hands, you should have way more subscribers. Nonetheless, thank you. Please keep bringing projects, keep posting, the way you explain and put the video together both with smontage/time-lapse and stops in-between to explain. Just, perfect.
Picked up my 94 about a year ago. I was dealing with the smell, and a sloppy shift from day 1. It's so damn fun to drive though. So, it was easy to overlook. I finally got around to rebuilding the shift mech, using this video. Very straight forward , and to the point. When I started taking it apart, I found that there was no fluid in the turret. No pivot bushing, (not even pieces in the turret) and the key was busted into pieces. (that were in the turret) After all was said and done, what a difference! I'll be installing the timing belt/water pump kit, next. Can't wait to see what I find with that!
Thanks!!! This really helped my mom and I fix her miyata. We had a few bumps here and there, we had to drain the transmission fluid because we added way too much. But overall super helpful...thanks!!!
I recently discovered I wanted a miata. found you on youtube and have been binge watching your videos for the past 4 days! I love love love your videos! got a 1992 1.6l 5 speed miata yesterday! couldn't be happier :)
Dude my cap to ball point end of the shifter was cracked half up the neck of the point, definitely a needed upgrade and huge thanks for making a simple easy installation video, helped me a lot.
FYI the 6-speed shifter does not have a fluid reservior. Just grease up all the parts and throw them in! (Also seen in the end of my "hardest transmission install ever" video)
I really...rely on the instructions in your video's and just because you told me to turbo my 1990 Miata seems all your videos have me in mind. but right now the gear shift is locked up! plan to rebuild the shifter using your video as a guide and thank you !.
In ten years your videos are going to drive the price on na miatas way up. The amount of knowledge you can take from these tutorials and apply to miatas same day is unreal
You make without doubt the best most helpful vids ever and you make them fun I just got my intercooler on and bought a rb25 det turbo the other day I'm ready to go choochoo!!! And go choking down the roads after you make you budget miata series complete!!!

Just completed my shifter rebuild using your video, after realizing I left my computer with the service manual at home, and that the Moss kit doesn't come with instructions. I just picked up my 98K mile NA6 a month ago, and had NO IDEA HOW AMAZING THIS SHIFTER FEELS NEW! Thanks for helping me breath life back into my baby--I've never wanted to drive her more than right now! This will probably beat Friday's LSD swap and coilover install for most fun factor added to the car!
Hi Greg, huge fan from Kuwait! your videos are awesome and inspirational mate. The comment on the weel seemed really interesting and still waiting on more videos from the engine rebuild ; )
Thanks for all the videos I just got a 1990 mazda miata and have to replace the clutch and shifter and yes I am definitely ky and jealous of your trunk release. But great videos bro keep up all the hard work
I think the turret oil is isolated from the transmission fluid. E.G they are two different oils. I remember reading your supposed to use 75w90 for the turret and MTL for the trans, both from Redline ofc. So yeah don't expect to fill your transmission from the turret, because it WONT hold that much.
Hey Greg, I am a new sub and I am thinking of getting a miata before the end of the year. I have to say your videos are so informing and entertaining. Keep it up! p.s. I checked out the how to buy a used miata video and that was really informing :D

Im definitely gonna copy the intro on my Fiat short shifter making video. Thanks Greg. I'm really need a shorter throw because I'm always hitting my elbow on the seat trying to grab second gear 🥵 👍 btw I also used a toilet valve o-ring in my oil cap. Fiat🤝Mazda
Excellent yea I definitely need to rebuild mine I have about an inch of slop either way on my shifter and I was looking at the moss rebuild kits but I rarely miss gears so I wasn't sure if I needed it haha
Watch the video before doing it, just fitted the seal with the grove in place of the one without, just had to cut my new boot apart to get it off. Now waiting for parts.

More Miata tutorials please! I loved how in depth this was!
React Thanks man. They've been coming out a little longer than I want, but I try to keep it packed with information and details and cut out the fluff.
