On my 1rst try I did it in one day taking about 6-7 hours. I struggled hard getting the transmission back to the engine. I was too fatigued to lift it and balance it, but I will say using an impact gun helped alot. But on alot of my jobs I send soooo much time looking for tools and finding the torque specs.

So happy to see this video. You're a gift to the already very helpful Miata community. I replaced my timing belt a week ago, and the job went better than expected thanks to your t-belt replacement video. Also, I cannot describe how satisfying it is to finally remove an old oil seal when you've been working at it for 30 minutes in an awkward position. I could not find that information to save my life but I remembered that you did cover it in this video.
INCREDIBLE video. I'm really intimidated by transmission/engine work as I'm an absolute novice BUT this gives me a lot of hope, the goons at every mechanic's shop quoted me anywhere from 990$ to 1400$ for this job
This guy needs way way more support! I want to see him get big. He's already killing it. So much attention to detail. So much teachings, awesome content and filming too man! Keep this up!!!!! - excuse me posting this to an older video
Just finished installing my 6 puck sprung copper ceramic clutch and 10.6lb flywheel! What was supposed to be a day’s work turned out to be three, the studs on my exhaust broke off so I ended up pulling the whole exhaust out and welding the header to the mid pipe. And of course all the hardware stores were closed (Easter).... But now my car rips! Thanks for the guidance Greg, made the actual trans install a lot smoother.
Just wanted to say, your video was a HUGE HELP! Just 2 days ago I just change my clutch and if it wasn't for your video I think I would had a difficult time! Great video!
Did this this weekend, thanks a bunch for the tutorial! For the rear main seal, drill a pilot hole and run a big screw into it (careful not to touch either mating surface. When you screw it in the screw will bottom out and the seal will walk right out on the threads.
Upgraded my clutch on my nb ready for a turbo build a couple of weeks ago, used your video to help me, spent 2 days doing it all carefully, and all has gone well.. so THANKS greg, really helpful 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😁😃
love the video, Gregg. I'm having dejavo....exactly how I did it in the '70's. Under a 67 Camaro. On a gravel driveway. In the dead of winter. In the pouring rain. But the steps didn't change much. Thanks for posting. Now I can do the Miata with confidence, except I'll use my floor jack to carry the tranny, thank you.
excellent video Greg! This would have made my clutch job so much easier had it been out 2 years ago. One thing I'd like to point out though. Once the transmission is down check the bellhousing, if you've got anything other than clutch dust on the walls like oil for example, check the transmission seals/gaskets as well as the rear main. At 11:54 under the front transmission cover is a paper gasket, i had a bad leak from there!
this is my third time using this tutorial: 1st time I needed new clutch and also got a lightweight flywheel, 2nd time my SO got a new engine, and now this time I just finished building my engine with machined and forged parts and it's finally time to put this stuff on it I appreciate it and I'm sure I'll be back in 9 months to do it again for some reason

You seriously make the absolute best how to videos, for all us fellow miata owners, give this video a like for making backyard mechanics like us an amazing guide.
I have a 2007 ford ranger truck. I am thinking about buying a Miata, hopefully NA manual. The truck leaks oil profusely. It is automatic but I need to pull the trans and replace the main seal. This video (and others) have given me the confidence to get that done.
lmao... when you were just laying there at the end... i've found myself in that same position numerous times. awesome video. rear main replacement + flywheel + clutch project starting this week. you're the man!
Just seeing this video today. I replaced my clutch on the 97 Kia sephia with Mazda BP 1.8 engine a couple years ago around the 300,000 mark. Yes the original clutch lasted that long. I used the triangle pattern to torque on the pressure plate. I also was able to get a micrometer on the flywheel without removing it and found the thickness of still be in spec and there weren't any grooves so I actually pulled the pilot bearing with the old bread and grease trick since I didn't have a puller tool. To install the new one I used a socket the same size as the outer race with a hammer to seat it. I used some 600 grit sandpaper and a buffing motion to work a stack of dimes patterns to work my way around the flywheel without removing it. I didn't really have any deep grooving of any lipping and had to reason for remove the flywheel itself. I just put a light skuff on it for extra grip. My Kia uses the same engine as the Miata, but is front wheel drive and oriented 90° clockwise for how it is in the Miata with a different transmission. Shop would charge about $2000 to do my clutch as 2 CV axles, air box, battery tray, and 3 of the 4 motor mounts along with the slave cylinder have to come off to free up the transmission. That being said it was a pain in the ass and I had to support the engine with a jack, and also had to tilt it in order to slide the input shaft out of the pilot bearing in order to remove the transmission as well as reinstall it. That was honestly the worst part of the entire job. my rear main seal wasn't leaking either, not even after 300k. I use good oil, change it often, and I'm not boosted. I'm at over 340,000 miles now and that BP engine is still in good shape and doesn't burn a drop of oil.
I just performed the happy meal clutch upgrade as well as Delrin bushings for the rear diff. The only items that gave me trouble were the three nuts on the down pipe nearest the header. To get them off, I put kroil on them, then heated them up with a torch. I put the socket+extension on the bolt and gave them a few wraps with a mallet. After that they came right off. Beforehand I was using an impact wrench to get things off, but it wouldn't take 2 of the 3 off, so I had to use the heat/bump method to break them free. Thanks for the Video, I watched it a few times. Vroom Vroom!
I can't wait for the new build playlist. Makes it so much better when you don't have to pick and guess what order the build is going. Much respect, I'm a jeeper but the little Miata is growing on me lol.
Just did this on the floor!! Had access to a lift but it wasn't too bad. Bell housing bolts were solid. Your vid was great. Very little figuring out in the end up because of it. THANKS
Just wanted to add that you have to be super careful when reinstalling the PPF to avoid pinching your neutral switch wires. If you break a wire it is difficult to repair in place. Also, as someone else mentioned, you may need to jack up under the nose of the engine to align for reinstalling the transmission. Great video and super helpful!
Gotta say thank you for the detailed video! I decided to drop the transmission to replace a leaky rear main seal / oil pan seal by myself off of jackstands. Not the most comfortable job but it is definitely a learning lesson.
I just finished installing my new fidanza flywheel and stage 1 clutch and the car is completely different. Clutch is more grabby and the flywheel is more responsive. However the flywheel chatter is pretty loud but you know what.. race car. Without this video, I wouldn’t think I’ll even this clutch job by myself. Thanks again!
14:50 you definitely want oil on the seal. It helps with lubrication during installation and during the first start-up after repairs. If the seal surface is dry against the crank it *could* tear on initial start up.
Going to attempt this myself flat back in the driveway… in the winter, I’ve got a lightweight flywheel clutch and a new to me trans with half the mileage, new clutch master and slave and a shifter rebuild, should be feeling great after
Takes a lot of balls doing this job...even more doing it on your back. .watched the whole video...wish I had your knowledge. ..great job...would love to have you build my dream Miata one day..
Great video! FYI, you can remove the shifter and fill it there, it's much easier. You still have to remove the fill plug to see when its full. Also, it's easier to place the clutch disk on the flywheel and insert the alignment tool to hold it in place, then place the pressure plate. Nothing wrong with anything you did, just thought I'd share useful tips.
The shifter turret is not connected to the gearbox itself. so that is impossible, however i agree on the putting the clutch disk in first and moving the pressure plate over it.
I think your videos are thorough and accurate. But to improve your videos for better viewing try using a small led magnetic light when getting into dark areas. Most video cameras and phones have auto iris. Which means any light coming in from behind area to be addressed causes cams to iris down. Try a simple $3 light from harbor freight and see the difference. Thanks for your videos. They have helped my son and I to spend quality time together doing mechanical projects.
Killer vid. Clutch change is also a great time to rebuild the shifter turret...as you have everything off anyway. Cuz lets be honest, most 20+ year old miatas also have torn boots, and if you have a lot of heat coming into the cabin from the center console, its because of that. Great job, Greg.
Thanks to you i just replaced my first Clutch on my 1.6 90ps NA, its almost 0200am but i think im gonna continue till im done. Someday i want to install a 1.8 vvt with the maruhe 2.1 kit.... Gotta start somewhere Anyway, keep posting your awesome videos, they make working on the miata a breeze as long as you dont give up
Greg Peters, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, tHanK yOU...! I can not believe I ran into your video and you made it stupid simple changing my year one 1990 MX-5 clutch. I can see you are a bike nut with your Tioga shirt. I used to work for Tioga & Shimano back in the 80s. When I left Tioga I cofounded onZa. I own a 90 Miata that I simply fell in love with and trust no one to work on it, and my throwout bearing started to complain, so I figured I can do it my self and just replace the whole darn thing clutch rear seal and all. I give you a 110% excellent review. Dan Sotelo aka Mr. onZa! ( : FYI: I'm going to come back to you with a question that my MX is starting to complain about.
Thanks for your time and sharing this change out. Figure i will be doing this in the future. Have 82K on 91, 1.6 . Don't know how long the original will last. Not in any hurry . I think i will wear a cup to protect the jewels. I try to do all repairs myself, so this video was very good for me , and again thanks for sharing your experience with the Mazda Community. Dennis Oregon Coast.
@TheCarPassionChannel I just did a clutch job for the first time with the help of this awesome video! Thank you so much! Yeah we are stubborn and worked on it until we finished at 4:30am but it was totally worth it.
One thing I ran into while following these instructions was that the rear PPF bolts were frozen in place. They would not come off. It turns out that if you can get all of the other PPF bolts out, you can still maneuver it enough to get the trans out, but then you're really going to want to remove the shifter to give yourself more clearance up top. I also had significant trouble pulling the transmission off, because the pilot bearing froze onto the spline. I was able to get it to pull out by about half an inch but it would go no farther. I got past this by using two disc brake piston spreaders. I wedged them into the small gap I was able to make and was able to push the bearing free. Then removed them, positioned the engine, pulled and it came free.
hey @thecarpassionchannel / miatadad - I tackled this with the confidence that your video gave me. I'm currently stuck. I am reinstalling the trans and had a helluva time getting the input shaft into the pilot bearing and then the splines to line up. Tonight is actually my 2nd 2 hour event trying to do so. I have gotten the trans basically to within a 1/4" gap and even used some stock 100mm M12x1.5 bolts to help line things up once it all got close. That last 1/4" gap won't go away though. I've seen some lstech people recommending just using the bolts to pull it in the rest of the way, but I'm leary of that. I did however put the draft shaft on the back of the trans and spun the crank pulley while in gear and the drive shaft turns, so I'm like 78.3% confident I should just use the bolts to pull the bellhousing in the rest of the way. Thoughts? I'll buy you taco tuesday for the right answer!
Don't use the bolts to pull them together. Never a good idea! The trans will mate up to the engine by hand when aligned correctly. A couple things to try: use a floor jack and wood block to tilt the engine backwards slightly and try again, this makes it so you don't have to get the tail of the trans as high for perfect alignment. Also, you may need to realign the clutch disc. Since clutch alignment tools usually have some play, it's possible that the disc actually sits very slightly too low in the clutch, making it difficult to get the input shaft through. If you loosen the pressure plate bolts, push up slightly on the alignment tool (you'll feel the disc move) and then tighten the bolts back down. When you're trying to mate them, have a couple trans bolts in by a couple threads so it can't fall, and you can give it a bit of a shake as you pull the trans towards the engine. Hope this helps! It can be the most frustrating part of the job.
Dude.. Imagine doing this job in Norway. It's snowing outside (in May) and everything is rusted and bolts are impossible to remove. That would suck! :( But I'm getting closer and closer! Thanks for a great video!
For those who are watching. I HIGHLY recommend that you get the pilot bearing and fowl pins pressed in at a shop. It is extremely difficult to not damage the bearing while hitting it with a hammer and socket.
Reminds me of my first major car repair I've done. A clutch in a 2000 eclipse, some borrowed tools and a 20$ wal mart ratchet set in a open air apartment parking spot. Took two weeks but I got it done :). Also, F that car it was terrible.
What I love about this video . . . (?) Every bit still applies to this very day!!! (Good ol' Miata) Thank you (thank you thank you) !!!! So well put together, Easy to follow, Good stuff Cheers!
Red Locktight is definitely worth while on the flywheel and clutch housing bolts. Last time I did a clutch, a week in, the bolts backed out on the flywheel. They were torqued to spec and had blue lock tight, but still backed out till they were rubbing the clutch.
GREG! Thank you for more videos. Hopefully your real life job is going well. I know you can't post as many videos as you used to be able too. But we still love you.

I'm a simple man. I see a new CarPassionChannel upload, I like it.
Did this this weekend, thanks a bunch for the tutorial!
For the rear main seal, drill a pilot hole and run a big screw into it (careful not to touch either mating surface. When you screw it in the screw will bottom out and the seal will walk right out on the threads.
That feeling when you realize that even though Mondays suck, Mondays also mean a new Car Passion Channel vid is gonna drop!!
Just finished doing this on my 90 miata. You're awesome. Thank you for the detailed guide.
This video was a lifesaver. Subbed just for the quality and thoroughness.
Used this guide totday to replace and install a heavier clutch for a customer. highly recommend this video!
this is my third time using this tutorial:
1st time I needed new clutch and also got a lightweight flywheel, 2nd time my SO got a new engine, and now this time I just finished building my engine with machined and forged parts and it's finally time to put this stuff on it
I appreciate it and I'm sure I'll be back in 9 months to do it again for some reason
I'm back again and it hasn't even been a year 😭
I must've done something wrong last time because I haven't been able to get into gear since last time
Just replaced the clutch on my 2003 and this this video was a big help. Had more underbody bracing to remove, but otherwise pretty much the same.
I will surely read the article. Hey man I don't know anyone that works as hard as you do to get good, accurate information out to the viewers. I have watch more than a few of you video's and I learn good new info every time. Thanks Greg.
I love your format/how you make your videos it’s very detailed but quick and simple enough for my adhd ass to understand and enjoy as entertainment. Keep it up!
hi Greg, you know what In like the most? You put so much effort in everything, and its mostly not miata specific. because I dont even own a miata
keep it up greg
Greg, thank you. You explained everything perfectly and now I feel totally confident in being able to do this solo. Cant imagine how we miata enthusiasts managed before youre videos :P
Watched this countless times in preparation for my first clutch swap next weekend. Just gotta say what a sweet guide man. For some reason ‘I gots transmission on mah cheest’ always gets me haha
You seriously make the absolute best how to videos, for all us fellow miata owners, give this video a like for making backyard mechanics like us an amazing guide.
By far the BEST and MOST HELPFUL car channel for the Miata gang. thanks man!
I'm at over 340,000 miles now and that BP engine is still in good shape and doesn't burn a drop of oil.
best instructional on how to do this i've seen. Planning on doing it to my Spec Miata soon. Good work and thanks for the great video.
Only three mins in and I'm liking the approach already!
Used this video to put a 1.8L clutch in my MK1 1.6L turbo. Definitely harder than fitting the turbo kit!
A BUNCH of helpful tips, just got my transmission removed and the flywheel jamming trick is SUPER helpful. Thanks a bunch!
Just did this on the floor!! Had access to a lift but it wasn't too bad. Bell housing bolts were solid. Your vid was great. Very little figuring out in the end up because of it. THANKS
I feel like a beast. Prop and diff to put back in once I change the seals
This helped SO MUCH! Literally had zero trouble changing out my clutch thanks to you. You're the bomb!
Thanks for the video man! I'm about to replace the clutch on my NA miata and I find videos so much easier to follow than the service manual. Cheers.
This is easily the best how-to video I've seen for a clutch change!
Isn't the Fidanza flywheel so amazing vs. stock?? I loved the quick revs when I got mine.
Oh yeah! Completely changed the character of the car. I just took my Miata for a run at Palomar today and I was able to heel toe with ease.
14:50 you definitely want oil on the seal. It helps with lubrication during installation and during the first start-up after repairs. If the seal surface is dry against the crank it *could* tear on initial start up.
"That hairdryer that I keep in my car". So Mazda included it as part of the factory toolkit did they? How thoughtful.
Great video dude. Thankyou.
Is it sad that a NA Miata is my dream car? Also I love your content, im binging your videos instead of getting sleep for school tomorrow.
Going to attempt this myself flat back in the driveway… in the winter, I’ve got a lightweight flywheel clutch and a new to me trans with half the mileage, new clutch master and slave and a shifter rebuild, should be feeling great after
It's 2022 and this video still proves to be a very good resource. Thank you so much
edit: date typo
All the bolts are in the same place, confirmed!
I like how 3 years later youtube still puts this on my feed daily thanks algorithm
5 years old and still kicking. Used this for my NC today. Super easy!
They have helped my son and I to spend quality time together doing mechanical projects.
dude you re awesome. I HONESTLY believe that you deserve so many more subs...love from Greece man keep up the amazing work!!
I'm on my seventh transmission swap and I still watch this video every time. Thanks Miata Dad.
Gotta start somewhere
Anyway, keep posting your awesome videos, they make working on the miata a breeze as long as you dont give up
Gregs VVT Build AND CarThrottles Phil video on the one day, how could I ask for more😄
Greg Peters, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, tHanK yOU...! Dan Sotelo aka Mr. onZa! ( : FYI: I'm going to come back to you with a question that my MX is starting to complain about.
definitely these "The ULTIMATE" videos are really good, keep going !!
Dennis Oregon Coast.
love that "ill heat up the flywheel with the hairdryer i keep in my car" lol
@TheCarPassionChannel I just did a clutch job for the first time with the help of this awesome video! Thank you so much!
Yeah we are stubborn and worked on it until we finished at 4:30am but it was totally worth it.
What an impressive video! Perfect shade-tree procedures. Very clear and concise instructions; virtually impossible to get it wrong!
You are the man. Best miata videos in all the Interwebs. Blease neva stap
What I love about this video . . . (?)
Every bit still applies to this very day!!!
(Good ol' Miata)
Thank you (thank you thank you)
!!!!
So well put together,
Easy to follow,
Good stuff
Cheers!
Dude...you're the best! I was wondering how I was going to do my first clutch swap for my 1993 but now that I've come across this video Ima get to it this weekend. Very excited Very wow very thankful...
