- Unfortunately, many racing venues across the globe have seen their final race. Among the historic racing venues that have been around for years, there are many more that no longer operate at any capacity.
The idea of a “lost speedway” isn’t a new concept. Dale Earnhardt Jr hosts a show that discusses defunct race tracks over in the United States, aptly named Lost Speedways.
Many people across the world have lost what may have been considered a home track or favorite place to race. There are likely more abandoned Motorsport facilities than we all probably realize, but there is one way to preserve these circuits.
Behold the power of computerized sim racing technology. Imagine racing on a favourite course of yours, but on a computer. That’s exactly what we are bringing to the table in this video.
We’ve put together a list of race tracks that don’t host actual races anymore, but have been preserved digitally. Games such as iRacing, TOCA Race Driver 3 and even CART World Series have some bygone venues stored within. We’ve got eight of them here, but let us know what else we may have missed!

I guess you can say North Wilkesburo was literally saved by simracing, as it's now back on the NASCAR calendar for both Cup and Trucks.

Jacarepaguá, also known as Autodromo Nelson Piquet. It hosted F1 in the 80's, Moto GP in the 90's and early 00's and CART on the late 90's, but it was slashed in half initially to create place for installations for the 2007 Panamerican games, and then completely demolished around 2012 for the 2016 Olympic games. Gladly, the track and its diverse layouts can be enjoyed on Automobilista 1 and 2.
Cleveland is also in Automobilista 2 now. And I think Oran Park was in some of the ToCA Race Driver games too.
It was in all 3 good Race Driver games (fuck GRiD)
And North Wilkesboro is making a return to the NASCAR Cup Series schedule this year as the venue for the All-Star Race. Definitely the best possible ending there

well North Wilkesboro is back once more, one track SAVED by sim racing
Indianapolis 500 Evolution. They had several tracks they recreated from 100s of archived photos and 8mm film from family and fans. Riverside International Raceway, Trenton, Hanford and Langehorne Speedway were recreated. Andretti and Foyt, among others, hones their skills at these tracks in the 60 and 70s.
This is one of the reasons I love racing games.
The 'classic' circuits was one of the reasons I bought Project Cars 2, especially the old Le Mans layout.
The immortal GPL has had some incredible tracks over the years, such as Targa Florio or Mille Miglia.
Seeing the comments about North Wilkesboro I'm not the only one watching this video closing on 2 years after its release :)) Just wanted to mentioned that in the meantime AMS2 has Cleveland. (and of course, just as I finished typing, I noticed that someone just mentioned it a few days ago LOL)

Just stumbled into your channel this morning with the sequel to this. Burke Lakefront in this video hit close to home (all too literally) so you've got my sub. I long for a day where iRacing might be able to scan the tarmac at Burke and let us enjoy that circuit once again. I miss the races there
Oran Park was also a circuit available in V8 Supercars 2 (the Australian version of Race Driver 2)
My dad and I were big CART followers in the 90s and as a child I could never comprehend cars racing around an airport like they did in Cleveland.
(This is despite some of the most iconic circuits, like Silverstone, being on former air bases.)
You should do a video like this including mods, there are dozens of abandoned tracks recreated as AC/rF2/AMS mods brilliantly

No mention of the old Monza, spa and Le Mans layout in PC2 ? The oval section of monza alone would be worth mentioning.

Great video! Love that simracing makes it possible to visit old tracks, sometimes some you've never heard of. Often leads down a rabbit hole about a tracks history.
If you're going to make a part two of this, be sure to include mods, because some like the old Fuji one or Bremgarten are so good they look like official content.
I go to Burke Lakefront Airport all the time for the Cleveland Air Show. I had no clue I was walkin on a former race track.
I'm sure I've raced at Rockingham in one of the Forza Motorsport games. It might have even featured in the 'RIDE' motorcycle racing sim series.

I used it in PC2 for a championship I organized and at first people were just complaining "what's this track? nobody knows this track!" But finally we held some very good races on there. It's very nice for old cars!
North Wilkesboro has been rebuilt and will host NASCAR in 2023 the All Star race

You could do several episodes of this about mods for Grand Prix Legends alone - that game is a treasure trove of extinct circuit history.

07:00 a race track that has never been fully built ( barriers, curbs etc) and on which no race has ever been held is not a race track.
It's sad what's happened to tracks like Oran Park, Myrtle Beach (South Carolina, USA), etc, and what looks to be set to happen to Burke Lakefront Airport from what I've heard. Racing circuits find themselves in a "bOoMiNg ReAl EsTaTe MaRkEt", and the writing's on the wall.
Granted, Burke Lakefront Airport is, well, an airport, but with the airport being on the water, next to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and FirstEnergyStadium (home of the NFL's Cleveland Browns), Cleveland city officials started discussing the possibility of closing the airport last year, and selling the property off.
It sounds likely it will go that way, which would be a big shame. At least we have the old Cart races to watch 😌
The Valencia circuit is called the Europe GP in the F1 game because it hosted the European GP when on the calendar rather than the Spanish GP. I don’t personally know why but F1 tries to claim that the Baku GP is now the European GP.
Only the 2016 GP was called the European GP, anyways Valencia wasn't the first circuit to host the European GP, Nürgburgring, Brands Hatch, Jerez also hosted it throughout the years before Valencia.

Road cars are so expensive now with insurance, being able to ever have a racing car is so unattainable, thank god for sim racing.

They gave us a TON of layout for Monza that even included the Oval

They Failed to give us EVEN ONE with the "Curva del Vialone" a single right hand turn that existed from 1950 - 1971 and Include the Oval in 1955, 1956 and 1960 and 1961

Top Gear raced on this track, Clarkson destroyed his tires and struggle to find spare tires (if my memory is good James May drove a Ferrari 458 Clarkson a Mercedes and Hammond a Porsche 911 GT3 during this episode). They met the mayor and had understading problems

Just a small correction, Valencia ran concurrently to Barcelona. It would be more accurate to say Barcelona kept running the Spanish GP while the European GP at Valencia was cancelled.
No wonder the Vietnam Grand Prix is no longer available for the 2021 Formula 1 season due to Hanoi mayor was charged for corruption.
