  • Taiji is a lot more popular than Bagua, but why?
    Maybe Bagua should be the top dog...

    Thanks for this Eli, you achieved your mission in this video - as a long time Tai Chi (Taiji) practitioner with shot knees, I was always envious of people learning Bagua. You have convinced me to have the courage to try Bagua. As a result I am now a member of your weekly classes and your instruction is absolutely marvelous. Thanks mate.

    This is a wonderful video. I always considered Taiji, Ba Gua and Xingyi to be related. Currently enjoying incorporating both Taiji and Bau Gua (Circular and Linear) Forms.

    Second video I've seen and your love for the art is palpable. The proprioception pointers indicate you've really digested the sub-plot. Thanks for the fantastic instruction, your students are very fortunate!

    Taiji is visually more pleasing (it was for me at the beginning ). After 8years and lot of knowledge I now appreciate beauty of bagua and will start learning bagua soon.

      That's interesting, most people usually find Bagua is more interesting to watch, as there is just so much more to look at. But I guess it's like a beautiful woman, I might think she's stunning and another guy might not think much of her :-)

    Thanx Eli. I Love bagua, I do bagua, xingyi a chen taiji.
    (Do you know about chen taiji 'practical method' made by Hong junsheng. I think it is very interesting
    Also, Do you not do xingyi for any reason?

    • @taichiworld
      @taichiworld  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I've heard the "Practical Methods"
      I do bits and pieces of Xingyi, but have never learnt a full system of it. My Dad chose Taiji and Bagua so I've always done those.
      I have a set of Xingyi forms called Waving Forms one for each of the 5 elements. Those are very nice, I also do the Wudan Qi Disruption forms, these have aspects off all three, some like form number 3 is almost all Xingyi based.

    I study and practice Wangs Water taiji which is XingYi bagua and yang style taiji in one my teacher has me practice XingYi bagua and water taiji. I respect them all and Wang Zhuang Hongs taiji form has elements of all in one.

    Not against either, just if there is "only 10%" difference what is in practicing both? Or, I misunderstood something ....

    • @taichiworld
      @taichiworld  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      10% of difference in the foundation principles of movement.
      The form postures are very different.
      It's like the principles in one taiji form are the same as another but we practice more for variety.

      I think it’s hard to empty yourself of chi because it’s like trying to throw away nothingness. Once you gain it; it’s hard to deny.

    Taiji is mainly Yang, Chen and Wu styles. Bagua is more adaptable with Cheng, Yin, Liang, Gao, Fu, and many other styles. It has fighting principles not often taught in taiji like footwork, circles, and changes.

    If you outstretch/exaggerate your movements, then move 'wherever the body takes you' - you'll end up doing tai chi moves... only with Tai Chi - the movements are more centered rather than too outstretched or too 'miniaturized'. They traditionally practice from big to small as you gain experience, but anyone (predisposed) following the above can learn correct Tai Chi movements.
    When Tai Chi is practiced and nothing happens because 'it's so easy for it not to happen' - that's why they practice exaggerated/big to begin with, so you get the effect as you stated with bagua because of it being more 'expressed'.
    If you get good at allowing chi to move your body without imposition of self-ego: the same happens, but it tends to be a muscular to chi rather than big to small transfer as advancement comes.
    I primarily do bagua-based methods, but I've done it so long in developing based on some key concepts adapted after the style itself taught me what it is.
    When you post-wrap: you learn many of the techniques and movements that are found in circle-walking, and you learn through practice. The art itself teaches you the art.
    The same applies for painting with watercolor or oil paints. When you use 'the chosen media' - you will learn what works because practicing will teach you through refinement.
    It helps to have a natural knack for it (whatever skill-set you're advancing in), but study THROUGH practice is always more important than practice through mimicry. Mimicry or being taught by another practitioner IS effective in expedition of learning when you're simply 'way off course' or don't know enough of the basic building blocks (art media being utilized - as it were).
    It's easier to demonstrate + explain, rather than just explain, but I hope this is found useful.
    Also, control behind the elbow from above if it's low or below is it's high: I can't express the importance of this enough. Explore it, and you'll see the importance and why I state this.
    Good day.

    • @sleepingdogkungfu9326
      @sleepingdogkungfu9326 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a lighter note: when you play around with the brushing-knee movement, you'll find that you actually slap/brush the fingers of both hands together before literally brushing the knee. You should practice the movements with different levels of expression - in this case: some correct ways to perform brush knee do not actually literally brush the knee, while others do.
      I have other levels of expression with my sense of humor as well, but this comment is legitimate humor. I'm being serious as well, what I said is true. It's funny kinda though. :)

    • @sleepingdogkungfu9326
      @sleepingdogkungfu9326 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more quick note: it actually should be trained from behind wrist to behind elbow to behind shoulder typically as working your way around the opponent (although staying inside is applicable, it requires more attention), but the behind-elbow control is really key to going from 'looking to make contact' to 'having a position of control and advantage'.
      The elbow thing is really a big deal. If I were to only give someone 1 single hand-to-hand principle (within a limited amount of time to explain something easy for practically anyone to understand) to explore techniques from: that would be it.
      I appreciate your style a lot Eli, and I appreciate the efforts of both your father and you in advancing the practice of these great arts and methods.
      I prefer the bagua too, but I think of hsing-i as 'tai chi along a line' and bagua as 'tai chi along a circle'... to me they are all the same, but tai chi doesn't follow the practice pattern restrictions (common, not static).
      Bagua is more fun for me because the techniques/applications and movement variations come out, especially through post-wrapping (which I do via many approaches, not just stuck close and slide/wrapping as commonly seen). It's so easy to get to a series of effective uses of movements for fighting via bagua. Fun stuff. Nice flow.

    • @sleepingdogkungfu9326
      @sleepingdogkungfu9326 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Practically every movement in tai chi or bagua (practically) is just slight variations of single palm change, which simplified is just going from a right to left fighting stance. Everything becomes so simplified conceptually if you consider what it comes from rather than the individual techniques - the core rather than the details. A house isn't a series of blocks or boards with mortar or nails: it's a shelter. It's a shield. It's a wheelchair. It's an umbrella. Know the core of what you do in martial arts.
