  • In this video I open up the fuel pump from the Kohler KT17 out of my Bolens QT17, clean it, asses its condition, and discuss a possible option for rebuilding it. I was told that there is no rebuild kit available and the only option was a cheap Chinese plastic replacement fuel pump. I do not like cheap Chinese parts. Can I salvage this OEM metal fuel pump? Can I find parts to rebuild it? Let's find out.

Hello From Mark In Kentucky, Again. The suspected aftermarket fuel pump that I pulled from my 682 Cub Cadet also had the smaller spacing for all of the mounting screws which I think were 1,1/4 inch and I think that the OEM fuel pump is 1,3/8 inch spacing.
The reason that I know this was that I was on the @ISaveTractors site in which they offer a Kohler Fuel Pump rebuild kit that includes a diaphragm, spring and a gasket. On another video that I found here on TH-cam regarding rebuilding a Kohler fuel pump, The person stated that the fuel pump kit that he was using had come from I Save Tractors and made a point of saying that the diaphragm was much thicker than the one that was in question.
For my old fuel pump, I think my issue was the intake check valve was popping from out of the casing because I pressed down on the check valve and it popped back into the casing but still a bit loose while the outlet side was as it probably should be with no movement at all Actually the rubber diaphragm didn’t look all that bad as compared to the one that you were dealing with.

What is your parts cleaning solution?

I can't remember what I used to clean this fuel pump but my preferred parts cleaning solution is a mixture called Ed's Red. It's a bore cleaner for firearms but works great for engine parts as well. Ed's Red is equal parts of K1 kerosene, odorless mineral spirits, ATF dexron 3 and acetone. The acetone is optional. So if you think the acetone will harm whatever you are cleaning, leave it out.
