Generators that produce AC (alternating current) for household lights and appliances must produce current that alternates at 60 cycles per second. That is the standard frequency of the national electric grid. To produce 60 cycles per second, that engine must operate at 3600 RPM (revolutions per minute). (60 cycles per second X 60 seconds per minute = 3600 RPM) The governor should be adjusted to hold a constant engine speed of 3600 RPM.
The condenser stores an electrical charge, like a battery. For electrical current to flow, the storage device (condenser) needs two points of contact - the wire to the points (positive), and the condenser case (negative). So the condenser case needs to make good contact with the ground. When the ignition points open, the charge from the condenser is released and jumps across the points, creating a spark.
@@texascottonfarmer thank you for the info! I was aware of what the condenser did, just was not sure if it needed to be grounded. I was pretty sure it did. Electrical stuff is my weak point.

What kinda watts? Things awesome
@@_changeyourself thank you. It's 1500 watts.
The generator started and ran well, it looks like a cool machine
@@GardenTractorBoy yeah I'm super pleased with how it turned out! I hate to sell it but I already have 2 Onan generators and don't need a 3rd generator.
It is hard work when you have to pull an engine that many times. Great job getting it to start and it run good now
@@GardenTractorBoy yes it was tiring. I'm still working on it. Lol.
It is surprising how many parts are fitted wrong on old equipment. Great job getting it running so well
@@GardenTractorBoy yes I have seen many improperly installed parts over the years. And thank you!
Great job getting the saw back together and running. I am not a fan of working on something that small
@@GardenTractorBoy thank you. I enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun.
1980 I was going to auto body repair school now retired. I have several 5 hp 4 hp some 3 hp several I got running re painted.
Good job bud. I've been working on small (and other) engines for about 40 years and if I could give you any helpful advice at all, it would be to get in the habit of using the manuals (look them up and work from phone, or print it out if using phone to record) and use the manual even though you already know how to tear it down and put it back together. It helps find stuff others may have missed, and helps you do the same. Great work though, way to be persistent! 💪 P.S. on the "job" thing, if this is what you enjoy doing, go hard and look for more equipment you can score for free online and get it in shape and keep selling. You may be broke for a few days but once you score and sell something you just got paid! You will spend half the week broke working for someone else too so you may as well do it YOUR WAY! Good luck man!
@@Viralvid2024 thank you.
Great job spotting the missing earth and getting it to run. I hope you find a new job soon
@@GardenTractorBoy thank you! Yes I am very pleased that it was just simple repairs and a fuel system cleaning and that it runs so well. And thank you. We are hopeful that something will turn up soon.
It does looks like a K-series twin. These are fitted to our Bolens HT20, HT23 and Wheelhorse D200. We managed to crack a head on one of our HT23's recently
@@GardenTractorBoy I knew they were used in some Bolens tractors but I don't know much about wheel horse. Yikes. Hopefully you can find a suitable replacement.
The drill press looks good, great job. You could always print a replacement depth guage on 3D printer
@@GardenTractorBoy thank you! I would but I don't have a 3D printer. 🤣
@@oldirongarage1962 We do not have one either but we have got a few things printed by people we know
The drill looks good. We are in the process of buying a very old one to replace our newish one which is not great quality. We bought a X-Y table for our drill press and that is very useful
@@GardenTractorBoy thank you. I got my eye on a small x-y table as well for this little drill press.
The parts cleaner looks good, we use ours all the time. Great job getting it running, the new pump and switch should last a long time
@@GardenTractorBoy thank you. And I agree. It's basically new now. 🤣
We need to tidy our workshop too. The cold does make it hard working outside in the winter. We use a diesel RV heater. It looks like you have created a lot of space. Thanks for the update

Did the control lever spring back or do you have to pull it back to center?

@@sabbath7081 awesome! Thank you for that information. I'm not as knowledgeable with the vertical shaft engines.
The wedding sounds exciting, congratulations. That is a very cool mower, I have not seen that model before. It looks in good condition. The Bolens book sounds interesting, we have some of that information in small files
@@GardenTractorBoy yes we are excited about the wedding. And the mower does seem to be in good condition for the most part. Really hope to get it running.
That looked fun. I hope you managed to get out ok

I’ve really enjoyed your series on QT 17. I need to replace starter on mine, any technical advise how best to get access to and replace the starter? Thanks
It's an engine out job I believe.
I'm glad you are enjoying this series.
How’s the Qt 17 project coming? To lift the motor up to replace the starter, is it just necessary to remove the 4 motor mounts and raise the motor attached to the bottom plate up as a unit? Thanks!
@@georgemosley8779 honestly I'm not sure. Haven't had to replace the starter on one of these yet.
And unfortunately I've been swamped and haven't had time to work on this project since the last video.
I love your energy, please don't stop.

Saying hi from Holmes County Ohio, I like your tractor and your shredder. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸%
Thank you! Glad you like it! And I have family in Holmes County Ohio!
Beautiful country there. I love how hilly it is. It's pretty flat where I live.
Good video. I have the same machine that has been sitting in the garage for a several years. Not having any success trying to start it. I am going to try cleaning the carb and see if that takes care of it.
@oldirongarage I just picked one up for my Bolens tube frame. It has obvious connection points to the front attachment on a Bolens tube frame, but the frame then narrows down to a point. Curious if you could show me how it connects under your G14.
What is your parts cleaning solution?
I can't remember what I used to clean this fuel pump but my preferred parts cleaning solution is a mixture called Ed's Red. It's a bore cleaner for firearms but works great for engine parts as well. Ed's Red is equal parts of K1 kerosene, odorless mineral spirits, ATF dexron 3 and acetone. The acetone is optional. So if you think the acetone will harm whatever you are cleaning, leave it out.
@@oldirongarage1962 Thank you Sir
These are both from the mid-1970s because of their TNT100 (Tecumseh) engines.
I’ve going through and enjoying your videos. Thanks for bringing us along.
No problem! I'm glad you're enjoying them.
Your twin cylinder Onan Genset will indeed make 220vac juice. Get the schematic diagram and you can see that their are two separate power windings L1 and L2. If you are goosey you can get all the schematics of similar 1800 rpm Onan gensets including the ones with 220vac and those with 110vac only. Then you will see that L1&L2 are series-connected in the 220v-only units but in the 110v-only each winding has its own pair of outlets. If you are super-cautious (and you should be) you can use a thing called a dual-trace-oscilloscope and watch the outputs of L1 and L2 in real time and see how they are phased. SPOILER I already did that with mine because my wife would die in the Kansas heat without the house's 16 amp 220VAC central aircon running. PS - Onan parts are available at Cummins Diesel dealers (they bought Onan to get their diesel-powered reefer unit-business. Post-post-script: Here in KC it is legal to run a standby genset on Natural Gas. I had to get higher compression cylinder (flat) heads for mine because they lose a lot of power on natural (because it is "bulky" and so it cuts down on your oxygen intake) but it is 120 octane-equivalent so squeezing the charge a little tighter works fine.
The Bolens and shredder are a great combination. We need to find a way to import one of those Mackissic shredders
If I see one I can let you know. But this is the only one I've seen for sale. And I was very fortunate to get out for only $60!
The generator is very cool
Thank you! Agreed! I love it. Do you have Onan generators in your country?
We are the same in that we hardly ever use air tools now we have a good selection of battery tools. You are correct, the manual says it should be filled with the unit mounted on the tractor and the tines on the ground. Great job
Cordless tools are so much more convenient. And thank you. I took an educated guess!
I have not taken a Bolens tiller apart yet so this was very useful. Great tip to use a radiator hose, thanks
This was a first for me as well! I had to learn as I went. I'm glad you found it to be useful.
Nice Tractor, Hope You don't mind My little Story.. I have a 1256-02 that My Moms Father bought new in 1970. After Grandpa Passed in 89 the Bolens sat in the Rabbit barn in Greenfield Wi for close to 4 1/2 Years till I told Grandma that I am taking the Bolens Home. The weekend that I brought it Home She was at out House in Wausau Wi . I got it started and drove it off the Trailer and I swore she had tears in Her eyes watching Me drive the Tractor around. Fast forward to 2019 after doing almost nothing to it, It sat covered up at the Old place. It was moved to My new Place. In 2022 I turned 62 and Retired, YES Free time to actually work on it. I did a basic cleaning just around the Engine area to clean off a lifetime of spilled oil and crud. Took the Carb off and did a Rebuild. I got it running and moving under it's own Power. You can see it on Jon Ritters Channel A Ritterbit will do. Titled "Built to last" Through the Years I have Ebay watch lists for the Bolens and Have acquired a lot of replacement pieces for It. I have a new in the Package Factory Decal kit. an almost prestein original Seat ETC.ETC. After all the Garden Tractors Grandpa Bought, Junked, Traded Etc. He always loved the Bolens because it was the Most dependable, Heavy and with the locking Axle, it rarely got stuck LOL.... I hope one Day to actually restore it before Passing it onto another Family Member... I hope this wasn't to long. Thanks Mike M...
Great story. Thank you for sharing!
Good idea to rebuild it, that was a lot of wear. Once you have finished rebuilding it, it will be good for the next 50 years
The seat looks good. I like the seat design on the 1253, sadly both our 1253's are missing the original seat
I like it as well. And didn't feel bad. This is my first tractor that even has a useable seat.
A Mackissic Mighty Mac is an attachment we would love to own. They were not imported over here so shipping one from the US is our only option. Do you often see them for sale?
Big fan of your Bolens projects from across the pond. I’ll be rebuilding a PTO clutch for my G14 soon.
Is there a conversion for the 1253 for the starter/generator on the side? Could I put a regular car alternator on one if I ran a car battery with it? Looking at one of these 1253s and its missing that part. I'd have to fabricate a bracket of course
I'm sure you could.
You caught my attention. I used to work at a feedmill hardware store and worked on Bolens tractors. I bought a 1254-01 that someone had traded in for a new model. I was so impressed that as soon as I was able to I bought another 1254. Had most of the attachments for them. A real garden TRACTOR is what they were. I actually used the one just for pushing snow up until 2013. It was still running when I sold it. Still amazes me that a 12 horsepower Wisconsin had all the power you needed when now it takes 23 horsepower. Oh well keep on keeping my memories alive 👍.
Great story. Thank you for sharing. Yes the Wisconsin engines were the best. These old Tecumseh engines were pretty great too.
Great job replacing the decals, they look good
Thank you. It was very satisfying to do!
I had one of these follow me home 2 days ago
Great tractors. Haven't even used mine for work yet but already love it.
Those carbs and push/pull throttle controls can be a pain. Great progress
Those carbs I don't mind. The push pull cables I don't like. And thank you!
I used to have one of those. Make more videos on it!
I'm planning on it.
