    my cousin comes from Hungary and we have had langos many times. I love it when it is just rubbed with a clove of garlic and then sprinkled with salt. :) I am also going to Hungary for the first time in August (from Australia)
    and cannot wait to see it.

    We visited Budapest in december and went to Krumplis lángos in Flórián tér - it was so nice and well worth the trip outside the city centre 🎉 Also tried lángos papi but it felt very subpar compared to Krumplis. Thank you for the great recipe btw, we followed it a few weeks ago and it was really tasty 👏

    The best langos I had is in Köbanya, 1250 HUF and the owner is always very happy to serve me even though my Hungarian is terrble. Fluffy inside, crunchy outside and she puts extra sajt and tejföl for me. :) It looked a lot like the one you showed at the market. All others felt like tourist langos. :)

  • @RuslanaRose
    @RuslanaRose 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Just wanted to add to the dis recommendation about the langos in the Central Market Hall, a simple langos with sour cream and cheese costs there 3400 HUF and a special langos with toppings costs 6000-6500. That's crazy. And also the langos in the budapest zoo is good, about 1900 HUF and very good.

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Absolutely. I love the Central Market Hall for it's vibe and how the building looks, but it's no longer a regular market hall, the prices are way too high for the average local.

    Yum! My nagymama would make lángos (but, in a pan with oil not deep fried) to go with gulyas on snowy winter days (My granddparents and mum emigrated to Canada in 1956). We would not add cheese - we would rub it with fresh garlic then add sour cream that had been warmed in a bit of butter. So healthy 🤣I make if for myself once in a while but everything was better with her ❤

    • @erzsebetkovacs2527
      @erzsebetkovacs2527 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do you know maybe why your grandma had adapted the lángos recipe that way? Gulyás (meaning the soup, not the meat stew) is usually eaten with a slice of bread in Hungary.

      @@erzsebetkovacs2527 We usually had gulyás with bread but, after skiing, she would make lángos too. I don't generally eat whilst skiing so I am always starved at the end of the day.

    • @malomkarom
      @malomkarom หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Dillbendy If you're already gonna fry it at home, might as well just make the dough from scratch. It's really simple and it's a great, filling and very cheap food option for a weekend or whatever.
      I'm Hungarian myself, my family is in the minority cooking traditional foods at home all the time, we just don't understand how lángos became such a big deal all over the world, it's just a piece of fried bread dough, most of the meal comes from the toppings. It takes some practice to make, as it's a higher hydration bread though than the usual and not easy to handle, but you just practice it a couple of times and you're good to go, not like an ugly lángos would be any worse tasting than a pretty one. It's really not that hard, I'm not saying that just for myself, it really is not hard, make it 4-5 times and you'll be frying street food quality lángos at home.

    First of all, thanks for your videos 🙏🏻😉 These are, in my opinion, the best you can get here on youtube to get more knowledge about Budapest. In the last 2 years i was 4 times in your beautiful city. And yes, in the small, non popular markethall near citycenter is a very tasty langos. My personal favorite place was the retro langos. Very nice staff and a huge selection of different toppings. The included bar is also nice where you can enjoy a drink. In the first week of march i will be back again in budapest and then i have to try this new one at gozsdu. Thanks for this tip. 👍🏻😉

    I've visited Budapest three times and I'm coming back for Easter this year. For my first visit five years ago, we stayed by the Dohány street Synagogue (which is beautiful, i highly recommend a visit) and around the corner we found Drum Cafe - it is definitely focused on tourists, but has decent prices and in my opinion, their langos is great. They dont skimp on the cheese, it's not too garlicky, and there are plenty of options for toppings. we have come back there every time we are back in the city, we go back and its just as good as it was the first time ❤

    Sajtos - Tejfolos langos is definetely my favorite but oddly enough I've never had langos in Budapest. I usually have it when I go visit family in the countryside. Last year I had it in Nyiregyhaza at the lake and it was quite tasty! I've always wanted to make langos at home but finding Trappista cheese in the states can be difficult and unfortuntately using a substitute just isn't the same.

      I read that perhaps Dutch Edam or American Monterey Jack could be perhaps a substitute for Trappista. But I can see why it's hard to substitute... 😮

    My favourite lángos are still the ones that my grandmother and my aunt Mariska made. Oh and the ones from the lángos stand on the beach of Alsóőrs … Talking about the 70’s and 80’s now. The only topping available in those days was salt-garlic (sós-foghagymás), all the other toppings came later and are a bit of a touristy thing to me. Though I love the sour cream-cheese (tejfölös-sajtos) topping. About the dough, that was much more fluffier in the days. With large air bubbles in it, creating very crispy bits alternating with softer bits, giving a much less compact lángos. I suspect they use less yeast these days and don’t give it enough time to rise. Or they may even use baking soda instead of yeast. I don’t know, but I always try to make it the old fashioned way that I learned from helping grandma. I think I come close, but in my memory her’s were better still. At least the kids (and adults alike) over here go crazy when I announce I’m going to make lángos …
    I’m not an expert on lángos stands in Budapest but the Ligeti lángos stand in the Városliget (Állatkerti krt. right across the street from the zoo) is the best in the opinion of my family, friends and me.

    In Croatia, langoš/langos is pretty widespread and seen on every festival, which comes as no surprise since we shared so much history together. In different regions it is also known under different names such as "placke", which is the only name I knew as a kid, so "langos" came as a surprise when I keep noticing it on every stall.
    I am mentioning this because "placke" I had in my childhood were less traditional Hungarian (more of a regional variety), slightly thicker, and you could top it with pretty much anything, sour or sweet.
    As a small kid, I absolutely loved placke with home-made jam and as an older kid, I loved eating them with pate . Yeah, that would probably make an average Hungarian mad :)
    My favourite langos today is true Hungarian one, the same thickness of the first one in this video, with sour cream and garlic. So much more traditional, and less triggering for Hungarians :D
    Also, when visiting Skopje, I've noticed that you could easily find Langos sold on stalls.
    EDIT: didn't watch the whole thing before commenting ,paused on the part when you asked us about langos. Good to know that jam isn't too weird :D

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think Lángos and the other similar items in the region - like the "placke" - are a great proof of our shared history and how each culture has inspired each other. As I noted in the video there are some interesting twists (like the jam, nutella etc.) and anyone can enjoy Langos the way they like, but sometimes it unfortunately just becomes a way to charge a higher price... like seriously, when I see Stuffed Cabbage on a Lángos at Christmas Markets, I do get "triggered" :D

      Hey, thanks for replying. Just this Sunday, I came back from 6-day trip to Budapest.
      Thanks for all the tips, they were useful.
      Probably wouldn't visit House of Music if you haven't recommended it, it was a blast.
      Funny thing is, despite living in a neighbouring country in a town not far from the border, I don't think I ever heard real spoken Hungarian (at least not knowingly), not counting one or two words I heard online while researching for my trip.
      EDIT: just remembered that I visited Hungary with my parents for shopping way back in the 90ies, but that was so long ago that I hardly remember anything from it.
      I was positively shocked during my visit to Hungary because I found the language beautiful and I quickly started to grasp basic pronunciation just by using the metro and reading the station names while listening. Somehow, it all made sense.
      For comparison, Czech is a Slavic language and it makes zero sense to me , I completely gave up on trying to understand it.
      But Hungarian...today I booked my first online lesson. Didn't train my brain for years :) time to learn a new language.

    Hi, first, thanks for the education of the langos 😊Will visit Budapest next week (coming from svedorszag) and langos is one of the first things to enjoy. But what about topping? Shrimps, ham etc. would be nice, almost like a pizza.

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there! There are indeed many topping selections, to be honest Shrimp isn't really common, at least I have never seen one, but Ham for sure is available :) While for most pizza they put the toppings on the dough before it gets cooked, in case of Lángos the dough is cooked first in oil and then the toppings are placed on top if it, but I can see why some people call it the Hungarian Pizza 😊 As we suggest many times in our videos the general way to enjoy Lángos is on its own, with some Garlic paste, or with Sourcream and/or cheese. But if you wish to have some additional toppings, go for it 😊

      I see Pozsonyi Vendéglő was also mentioned by Dusan, and I can second that, although I didn't have Stuffed Cabbage yet there but they have nice and simple Hungarian cuisine, I am sure they also make Stuffed Cabbage well :) I had stuffed Cabbage in Retek Bistro which is more modern next to traditional, but it was a very interesting way of enjoying it. I would say, Pozsonyi is nice to get oldschool experience and Retek Bistro is good for a contemporary vibe :)

    As a keen language learner it made me laugh the way the guy at Lángos Papi spoke to you back in English even though you spoke to him in Hungarian as a native speaker. Now you understand what foreigners have to face. I think maybe Lángos Papi is aimed at tourists and it's no surprise they weren't quite as nice.
    I also noticed his hand written sign 'mulled wine and hot tea' were in English only. That's always a red flag to me. If the signs are only in English I avoid them totally. So I'll give Lángos Papi a miss when I'm in Budapest in November.

The Great Market Hall or Grand Market Hall is the most famous and popular from all market halls, but its more of a tourist attraction these days then a place I would recommend buying food. This also applies to the Lángos there: Overpriced and not great quality. I used to eat lángos here in Czech republic. But there are less and less places selling it so i didnt have one since I was a child. Im going to Budapest on Monday, som Im really looking forward to eating it again!
    I really love the markets! I wish we had those in Prague. There are some, but they are not as big and mostly tourist oriented.
    Im really looking forwards to the visit!
    I have some questions about the baths - we want to visit Rudas and Széchenyi. But there is either none or weirdly formulated info on the websites. So sorry for maybe awkward questions :)
    -Can we get the tickets at the place or is it better to buy them online?
    -Is it worth to get the “private changing room” in Széchenyi or the lockers are good enough?
    -Does the Rudas “wellness-spa ticket” include the bath on the roof or do we have to get the “ALL IN ticket”? We dont need to visit the turkish bath.

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey there! Regarding Szechenyi, getting tickets online upfront is more of a convenience than a must. There is a different queue for the Online Booked tickets which is usually shorter, but the other queue only gets long in the most popular hours. So it's not an issue if you buy at the the door when you arrive. In all honesty, I never used the private changing room, the lockers arent huge but we could fit all of our stuff in them. I believe the private changing room perk is good if you do not wish to change in front of others. There is separate changing room with lockers for man and women, but some people still don't wish to change in front of others. Regarding Rudas: I am not sure however the wellness part of the building has the Rooftop pool, so I assume the wellness only ticket has access to that, as the Turkish bath experience doesn't really fit well with the outdoor bath experience. The Turkish bath has only a few days when its coed, most days its men or women only. So in short I believe the Wellness ticket is good for the rooftop pool :)

Not to mention how many of those are found in the trash once tourist find out that they hate them (especially when they are poorly made) so much food wasted :(

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there. Just note that Hungary isn't huge on steak. While we do have the grey cattle which is a local special kind of cattle, we tradionally aren't famous for steak so most steakhouses will have import stuff, though you may find Hungarian cuts here and there. I personally like Pampas Steakhouse, or there is Hot stone steakhouse which has this fun gimmick that you get to cook your own steak on a hot lava stone. This isn't for everyone as you will kinda smell smoky afterwards and you kinda need to do your own cooking though the staff can help if needed. I had fun I enjoyed it and food was nice but there are people who feel it's a gimmick where you pay but you cook your own food and that makes sense. So if you feel this is fun, I can recommend it, if not then pampas is nice, not super expensive but not cheap either... Steak isn't cheap around here. 😅
