My grandfather out of nowhere brought out a machete that he always kept by the register. To my surprise, the first thief almost lost his arm and the other was struck on the torso. Back in the triad days the local thugs would demand protection money but they really did protect the shop owners in a way from outside criminal elements because Chinatown was the local tongs turf. Back then there's money to be made in Chinatown because there was a real thriving community. The Chinatown gangsters will even chase the other groups across the bridges to retaliate and eventually there would be some understanding. Today those triad members are old men some either went to jail or and some simply grew up and moved into the suburbs. They had families and their kids are now law abiding professionals. There's no more tongs like in there old days. Just old left over people in Chinatown that never made it out of that hood.

Over 3 decades ago my relative who was a small business owner shot and killed a robber with a licenced handgun during an armed holdup. The family of robber came into business to threaten my relative. The criminals and their families have no values and moral standards, instead accepting the robber's immoral conduct and action but blame my relative's self defense. Finally my relative sold the business and move out of state to avoid further problems. Good people leave but bad people/criminals stay and do more harms. This is messed up. Three decades later nothing really change. There is no personal responsibility. The criminal system is totally broken.
