I’m glad I clicked on this because my friend and I were talking about how terrible it is that movie trailers give away so much right before going to see Late Night With the Devil. They showed a Long Legs trailer and I looked at him and said “now THATS how you do a movie trailer.”
I love mood trailers or teaser trailers that just have no dialogue or explaining the plot. I rarely watch the full trailers because of these reasons. A24, Neon and some other boutique labels know how to cut a trailer to keep that mystique alive.
We gotta let the directors direct their own trailers. That “Wild Robot” trailer from Dreamworks recently was beautiful and told me just enough to get the movie in my mind without telling me anything from the plot. Now it’s the movie I’m the most excited for this year, since Dune’s already out :)
The teaser trailer for Alien (1979) is still the greatest movie trailer of all time. No plot. Just terrifying vibes capped off with silence and the iconic tagline at the end.
I've stayed away from movie trailers ever since the Dune Part 1 trailer spoiled the shot of the Sandworm leering over Jessica and Paul, that would've been astonishing to see for the first time in IMAX. Honorable mention to the first Asteroid City trailer spoiling the funniest joke of the movie when Scarlett Johansson asks Jason Schwartzman if he wants to see her next movie's nude scene in person
To this day I still think about when I went to see Into the Spiderverse in the Cinema with my family and they played a trailer for "A Dog's Way Home" That was... Essentially just a short film. They showed the dog getting home at the end.
A good example of a great trailer is Barbarian. The trailer makes you think will be on a certain subject matter but if you’ve seen the film, you know it totally doesn’t. Also a movie that should be seen without knowing anything about it
I think the iron lung trailer was really great because it shows us basically nothing about the movie, but still makes you very interested and makes you want to see more
I noticed the phenomenon of “trailer lines” not being in the film with a lot of movies in the last year or two. Sometimes, it’s due to production hell and re-shoots, but sometimes it just feels extremely cheap
This all reminds me of part of a Simpsons episode where Homer was in a video rental store watching part of a movie on a TV hanging from the ceiling. The clerk then asks him if he wants to rent it and Homer says "Why would I rent it? I just saw the best part!".

About the 'not seeing any promotional material before seeing the film' bit, I had that with the absolute master piece move Everything Everywhere All At Once. I actually found it at the store and remembered I really wanted to watch it after hearing how good it was, and was insanely curious about the googly eyes, but knew nothing of what the film was about. Ended up completely awestruck, and with a new favorite movie of all time 💖 and yes ofc I cried
Thumbs up for the cat chaos alone. It's funny that you mentioned Sponge Out of Water cuz I didn't want to see it based completely on the CGI versions of the characters, because I thought it was the whole film. Still haven't seen it but maybe someday I'll do a SpongeBob movie marathon
Honestly, I do the same A LOT. I tend to close out of them when I get too into it so I don't see too much, I get more excited for movies that way. I did that recently with Love Lies Bleeding and when I left the theater I couldn't stop smiling.
I actually NEVER consume any of the movie marketing precisely because of spoilers. I mostly only watch movies on TV, and I even avoid the movie adverts. And if I watch trailers, is only ever AFTER I watched the movie. I think the experience is so much better this way. I like to be surprised. Some movies throw plot twists at you that hit much nicer when you watching blind. Open Dusk Till Dawn comes to mind, but there's so many others.
My absolute favourite trailer of all time is for Alien. The whole composition of it with the haunting track in the background and little to no view of the actual alien builds so much more anticipation than most modern horror trailers where the 'monster' is shown in the first few seconds. Also, love the vibes of your videos! The title cards and editing are lovely :)

I absolutely hate when a trailer just spoils the entire plot of the movie. I learned my lesson to avoid these spoilery types of trailers with the Mario Movie because the trailers revealed so much that I felt like I already saw 75% of the movie when I went to theaters and left them a little bit dissatisfied. Kung Fu Panda 4’s first trailer is one of the worst examples of spoilery trailers in my opinion too, that 3 minute trailer revealed like the entire plot of the film in concerning detail with so many unbelievably shoved-in dialogue lines also, it was insane. I clicked off that trailer like half-way through and just waited for the movie, and thankfully had a solid-enough time
I'll never forgive the Thor Ragnarok trailer for spoiling the reveal of Hulk being there; after that I almost never watched an entire trailer ever again

Probably the worst trailer I’ve ever seen is the trailer for Terminator: Genisys, where it tells you what was definitely intended to be a huge plot twist. Of the course the movie was bad, too, but that’s another discussion.
A dialogue of Ruby Gillman teenage kraken where Ruby Gillman says “it’s time to go big” was cut from the movie even some scenes with ruby being trained by her grandmamah was cut as well

Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning really fell victim to over advertising in trailers and tv spots. Loved the movie but they showed the motorcycle jump off a cliff in way too many ads. Really took some of the awe away. They even showed a behind the scenes of a car chase right before the movie started in theaters!!!
If I can choose to do so, I usually only watch the teaser trailer, or the first released trailer. When I go to a movie theater, and I can tell that they’re showing a second or third trailer, I’ll close my eyes for the entire trailer
A lot of trailers for TV shows do a great job of hiding what’s to come. Best examples I can think of from recent memory are Barry, The Cruse, and Better Call Saul
The last movie I went in completely blind was Aftersun, and that movie has changed me. It was one of my favourite movie experiences ever, and surprisingly I was the only one in the theater. God I love that movie

Trailers have a hold on me just because I would always turn on the movie trailer channel direct tv had as a kid and just sit and have movie trailers playing in the background all the time. As I grow up tho I’m much more fond of teasers. A great example of this is the alien movie teaser that released today. Doesn’t show you anymore than you need to know or should know it’s perfect and did just enough to get me excited for the movie. Also shout out to activate windows. It’s burned into my pc’s monitor lol.

If you thought the Black Christmas (2006) trailer was bad, you haven’t seen the Black Christmas (2019) trailer. That trailer spoiled EVERYTHING. I wouldn’t be surprised if that trailer was why that remake got underwhelming box office results.
With a lot of movie delays recently I think studios r just trying to revamp their marketing to remind ppl movies r still coming out. The trailers don’t need to be over three minutes tho 😂
I couldn't agree more. I just watched Late Night with The Devil and I hate to say it but if you saw the trailer you saw the whole movie! Which is disappointing because I wanted to be surprised or shocked at the events that unfolded in the film. But a good example of well cut trailers are the first 3 teasers for Daniel Craig's Bond movies. Short, sweet and to the point. Made you excited and interested without giving away too much.
I saw you on my recommend for the movie posters vid & I loved the editing style. Then I see you again & the quality is just the same if not better. So refreshing to see a you kept the quality up definitely gonna subscribe.
I'm autistic and it's difficult for me when a film isn't what I thought it was going to be, so if a film is completely different to how the trailer portrayed it, then I don't feel great. But if a trailer isn't misleading but vague, I think that can be good. If a film trailer shows an upbeat comedy and the film's first half is an upbeat comedy but then there is a tonal shift to something unexpectedly darker, I think I don't mind that, as long as it's executed well. If the entire film's tone is misrepresented, I think I'd feel shortchanged and uncomfortable

While I agree with most of what you’re saying, I will have to disagree on the matter of movies having multiple trailers. I think there’s a very strong argument for a film having two trailers. The first, commonly known as a teaser trailer, is designed to be just that: a tease. It shows audiences a glimpse of the concept, or perhaps even less, just to get people talking. Think of it as a trailer version of a movie poster. The second trailer should show more, likely showing the protagonist, usually the villain, and explain the basic idea of the conflict. In short, the visual equivalent of a blurb. This is the sort of thing that results in more specific analyses, but shouldn’t spoil the entire thing. No big plot twists, maybe one big shot to develop hype. I think a good rule of thumb is to keep anything from the third act to a minimum, but even this rule can be broken if the moment works differently in context.

If you could believe it, I managed to go into Oppenheimer pretty much completely blind other than knowing generally who/what the movie was about and some of the cast, never saw a trailer once and it was an amazing experience seeing it for the first time like that

I think the "Final Trailers" are the most unnecessary. They pretty much give everything away. If you want to avoid spoilers but watch trailers, I think just watching the teaser trailer is your best option.
The best movie I saw in a theatre blind was napoleon dynamite. Hadn't seen a trailer or even ma movie poster. Expected a drama lol my favourite movie theatre experience ever
I recently discovered your channel and it's really good! I'm from Brazil and I have a problem understanding some parts. If you want a subtitler to translate into Portuguese, you could expand your audience further. I'm sure Brazil will love your channel like I did! If you need me, I'm at your disposal.
I prefer knowing something about a movie for example i watched both Poor Things and I.S.S with little to no information about either movie and was either bored as all hell or confused and disgusted
The best trailers were for some of the 1990s Disney animated movies. When you go to the movies and one of the trailers playing is just the full sequence of “The Circle of Life” song, you don’t need to see anything else from the film to know you have to go see The Lion King. Same with “Colors of the wind” from Pocahontas (even though the rest of the movie isn’t great). Disney can’t do this again because the songs in their latest animated movies aren’t as epic anymore, they’re way too pop inspired.
i stopped watching trailers when three movies in a row were spoiled to me just because i watched those stupid trailers, tbh i love going into movies without knowing anything about it, makes it way more enjoyable.
i don't watch horror or comedy movie trailers cause yeah those usually use the best footage other trailers i watch one or 2 i do try to watch all the trailers after ive watched the movie. and show the best one (imo) to people that i want to convince to watch the film
i realized this 2018 when i watched an indian tamil film called 2.0. watched all of the trailers which ended up spoiling all the twists of the last 20 minutes. i mean who defok markets their twists
If a new movie is coming out, especially if I am excited to see it, I will watch the trailer ONCE and then add it to my Plex watchlist (it's the most convenient way to track things IMO) and when it comes out I'll see it in theatres without rewatching the trailer at all because whatever grabbed me 5-6 months prior will surely grab me again and because I've forgotten a majority of the beats of the trailer, the film surprises me. This works I'd say 90%, because somewhere in that last 10% I've left a film being disappointed, like when I saw Wonka. Not saying the last 10% is awful movies, I've just been disappointed with what the film gave me when I saw it, and I'm left wondering what captured my interest in that first trailer. Edit: Crazy that I mentioned Wonka, and you said that stuff about the movie 😅 Edit 2: I actually had that moment where I was anxiously awaiting the TERRIBLE line about the trapped bridge in the DnD movie, but the line they used in the theatrical version and the delivery was WAY less stilted and was written WAY better.
Nowadays I go hardcore avoiding not just trailers, but also film descriptions, reviews, anything. The only metric I have in going to a film is if the reception of it was "good enough." I obviously know the title and the poster but that is as far as I try to go. Even Dune 2 stills I saw because they were unavoidable annoyed me, like the 3 worms one or the worm reveal. It's just cooler for the first time. But it is not just the shots or spoilers, seeing generally how a film turns out is interesting and gives you more to think about. I can name several I've seen recently where it is just fun to figure out what is going on: May December, Four Daughters, Monster, Poor Things. I knew next to nothing about these and some would definitely be in the description or given in the reviews which would make the experience less fun. Yes, sometimes my impression of a film is different from how it turns out, but if my impression is just based on a name or a poster it will hardly be very strong. And even if it is, I can just rewatch it knowing what it is and I will get used to it, but I can't undo not knowing things.
Adding examples. Zone of Interest I found out the premise and it would have been more shocking had I not, but I didn't see the trailer. Killers of the Flower Moon also I think had a small mystery aspect to it (obvious from a reveal) so I didn't realise something until some point in the film. Later I see conversations prior to film had this out in the open. It it is just a shame. Obviously reveals aren't the only important thing but again it adds to the experience and I think also people are less likely to concentrate if they have a grasp on everything.
This is a good video. And I subscribed. Novel and mind opening take on Weinsteins tho…showed a lot of bravery there…ban and burn every ‘90s Miramax movie I say. Not.

But a good example of well cut trailers are the first 3 teasers for Daniel Craig's Bond movies. Short, sweet and to the point. Made you excited and interested without giving away too much.

I saw you on my recommend for the movie posters vid & I loved the editing style. Then I see you again & the quality is just the same if not better. So refreshing to see a you kept the quality up definitely gonna subscribe.
I'm autistic and it's difficult for me when a film isn't what I thought it was going to be, so if a film is completely different to how the trailer portrayed it, then I don't feel great.
But if a trailer isn't misleading but vague, I think that can be good.
If a film trailer shows an upbeat comedy and the film's first half is an upbeat comedy but then there is a tonal shift to something unexpectedly darker, I think I don't mind that, as long as it's executed well. If the entire film's tone is misrepresented, I think I'd feel shortchanged and uncomfortable

While I agree with most of what you’re saying, I will have to disagree on the matter of movies having multiple trailers. I think there’s a very strong argument for a film having two trailers. The first, commonly known as a teaser trailer, is designed to be just that: a tease. It shows audiences a glimpse of the concept, or perhaps even less, just to get people talking. Think of it as a trailer version of a movie poster. The second trailer should show more, likely showing the protagonist, usually the villain, and explain the basic idea of the conflict. In short, the visual equivalent of a blurb. This is the sort of thing that results in more specific analyses, but shouldn’t spoil the entire thing. No big plot twists, maybe one big shot to develop hype. I think a good rule of thumb is to keep anything from the third act to a minimum, but even this rule can be broken if the moment works differently in context.

If you could believe it, I managed to go into Oppenheimer pretty much completely blind other than knowing generally who/what the movie was about and some of the cast, never saw a trailer once and it was an amazing experience seeing it for the first time like that

I think the "Final Trailers" are the most unnecessary. They pretty much give everything away. If you want to avoid spoilers but watch trailers, I think just watching the teaser trailer is your best option.
Yeah I’ve stopped watching trailers since High School. If I’m really interested, chances are I’ll watch the film just by name and crew.

Honestly with Sponge Out Of Water the 2D segments were WAY better than the 3D ones, so I definitely wouldn't say that I felt ripped off.
The best movie I saw in a theatre blind was napoleon dynamite. Hadn't seen a trailer or even ma movie poster. Expected a drama lol my favourite movie theatre experience ever

I prefer knowing something about a movie for example i watched both Poor Things and I.S.S with little to no information about either movie and was either bored as all hell or confused and disgusted

The best trailers were for some of the 1990s Disney animated movies. When you go to the movies and one of the trailers playing is just the full sequence of “The Circle of Life” song, you don’t need to see anything else from the film to know you have to go see The Lion King. Same with “Colors of the wind” from Pocahontas (even though the rest of the movie isn’t great).
Disney can’t do this again because the songs in their latest animated movies aren’t as epic anymore, they’re way too pop inspired.
i stopped watching trailers when three movies in a row were spoiled to me just because i watched those stupid trailers, tbh i love going into movies without knowing anything about it, makes it way more enjoyable.
i don't watch horror or comedy movie trailers cause yeah those usually use the best footage other trailers i watch one or 2
i do try to watch all the trailers after ive watched the movie.

i realized this 2018 when i watched an indian tamil film called 2.0. watched all of the trailers which ended up spoiling all the twists of the last 20 minutes. i mean who defok markets their twists

If a new movie is coming out, especially if I am excited to see it, I will watch the trailer ONCE and then add it to my Plex watchlist (it's the most convenient way to track things IMO) and when it comes out I'll see it in theatres without rewatching the trailer at all because whatever grabbed me 5-6 months prior will surely grab me again and because I've forgotten a majority of the beats of the trailer, the film surprises me.
This works I'd say 90%, because somewhere in that last 10% I've left a film being disappointed, like when I saw Wonka.
Not saying the last 10% is awful movies, I've just been disappointed with what the film gave me when I saw it, and I'm left wondering what captured my interest in that first trailer.
Edit: Crazy that I mentioned Wonka, and you said that stuff about the movie 😅
Edit 2: I actually had that moment where I was anxiously awaiting the TERRIBLE line about the trapped bridge in the DnD movie, but the line they used in the theatrical version and the delivery was WAY less stilted and was written WAY better.
Nowadays I go hardcore avoiding not just trailers, but also film descriptions, reviews, anything. The only metric I have in going to a film is if the reception of it was "good enough." I obviously know the title and the poster but that is as far as I try to go. Even Dune 2 stills I saw because they were unavoidable annoyed me, like the 3 worms one or the worm reveal. It's just cooler for the first time.
But it is not just the shots or spoilers, seeing generally how a film turns out is interesting and gives you more to think about. I can name several I've seen recently where it is just fun to figure out what is going on: May December, Four Daughters, Monster, Poor Things. I knew next to nothing about these and some would definitely be in the description or given in the reviews which would make the experience less fun.
Yes, sometimes my impression of a film is different from how it turns out, but if my impression is just based on a name or a poster it will hardly be very strong. And even if it is, I can just rewatch it knowing what it is and I will get used to it, but I can't undo not knowing things.
Adding examples. Zone of Interest I found out the premise and it would have been more shocking had I not, but I didn't see the trailer.
Killers of the Flower Moon also I think had a small mystery aspect to it (obvious from a reveal) so I didn't realise something until some point in the film. Later I see conversations prior to film had this out in the open. It it is just a shame. Obviously reveals aren't the only important thing but again it adds to the experience and I think also people are less likely to concentrate if they have a grasp on everything.
Another example is Iron Claw where all I knew was it was about wrestling
