letterboxd truly changed the way i watch movies. i mean, now i can't watch a movie peacefully, without thinking about how many stars i will give it, or what my review is going to be, but it's totally worth it.
I started film school in fall of 2023 and I felt so confused when everyone was talking about their letterboxd since I didn't have one and no one I went to high school with was into movies. A lot of people at the college not in the film school made fun of the film bro stereotype of talking about letterboxd and so I was hesitant to get on the app. I finally caved in and downloaded the app in December and oh my gosh it is great. I love being able to see what my friends watch and keep track of what I watch. I like to be organized, and I previously just wrote all my favorite movies on my notes app, but to have an app where I can track and rate what I watch has been so much more helpful. The community around lettboxd is great, and I love reading reviews of movies, especially when people are making great jokes or just enjoying themselves. ALSO I can't wait for it to add tv shows, whoooo!
5:56 3 Paragraphs? Weak. Once wrote a review with over 30. Edit: today I just finished writing a 23 paragraph one with massive paragraphs, it never ends. I’m a nerd lmaooo
The shift I’ve had from having the app for at least 5 years now is crazy. I’ve watched nearly every kind of movie by this point and was always hesitant with high ratings. At one point i only had Birdman at a 5 star, and now like a third of the movies ive watched are at a 5. I didn’t even rewatch practically any of them but something changed where i was able to look back and also appreciate the new movies i was seeing even more.
Good video. Just one note: Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t even really use a critic’s “score” of a movie to determine whether it was positive or negative. They use some algorithm to look for how many “positive” or “negative” words/phrases the critic wrote in their review. So, it’s all about how much text was dedicated to elaborating on the positive vs negative. I’ve seen 7/10 reviews labeled negative, and 4/10’s labeled positive. In other words, Rotten Tomatoes is even worse than people think.
I use IMDb to simply check out movie casts, plot synopses, and maybe read some funny quotes. Rotten Tomatoes I use to look at their movie rankings (ex: all bond movies ranked, worst superhero movies, best horror movies, etc.)
You're so on point with RT. I have exactly the same thoughts after several years of looking at their scores for the movies. Def gonna check LB, never used it.
Oh yeah, I'm a big letterboxed enjoyer, I also forced all my friends to get it. issue is, none of them use it and I'm the only reason that some of them ever even watch movies
i disagree, as a person that lovesLetterboxd the main thing I love about it is that it feels like it is an app made exclusively for movie fans, it becoming more mainstream would in my opinion ruin the experience
I was just beginning to get into film, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to be fully engrossed in the art form, but when I joined Letterboxd, I discovered so much excellent cinema that I just went completely over the edge, and I still am.
"I've been on the app since 2018 and I've probably checked it every day since joining." Literally same. I mostly use it on the computer but yeah I almost always have a LB tab open. I really need to update my top 4 tho. Idk if using Letterboxd has really changed the way I think about films but I definitely have been able to discover so many more films, and particularly films that align with my taste and interests- mostly through finding and following people whose taste is similar to mine. I think that's one of the great things about it. Of course this is also the case for most other social media platforms, but on such an app/site, I like that my feed is a mix of activity from friends, creators I follow, and other random fans whose profiles I discover.
I love how you try and have these “shots” in a video like this, I especially love the one where you’re in a white spotlight with a circle edge around it, it just feels so much more grabbing even though it seems like a simple thing
Letterboxd & CinemaScore made me a cinema lover! I took multiple film classes when I was in High School & College! It made me appreciate the art form even more as I’m an aspiring director & writer!
Scream VI got a 76% on rotten tomatoes with 309 reviews and it has a 6.70 out of 10 Last night in soho has a lower score and it has a 6.90 out of 10. The score is what people should be paying attention to not the percentage.
this is not a 7000 sub channel lol. great video! hope you blow up big-time i also recommend you check out some more ghibli! maybe i’m just blind but it doesn’t seem like you’ve seen their whole collection just yet :)
That’s not how Rotten Tomatoes works though. It’s an aggregated score. So if a film has a 65% critic score, it means that 65% of the critics who reviewed the film liked it/thought it was good. Not saying I use Rotten Tomatoes as my barometer for whether a film is good or not, but this explains why a film that you might like has a bad RT score. For example, I mostly enjoyed Eternals, but it has a 47%. This doesn’t mean that on average the critics gave it a 47/100. Again as mentioned earlier, it means that 47% of critics gave it a positive review.
I like Letterboxd but it really is filled with some of the most painfully unfunny people on the planet. So annoying when you want to see what other people thought of a film but 90% of the reviews are the shittiest one liners you’ve ever heard of
Ik I already commented but I was just wondering if someone could recommend a list of “vintage” or 70s-esk movies, cuz I’ve seen some of the more well known ones, but I want to see more
Here are some of my favorites from the 70's: House (1977) Eraserhead (1977) Stalker (1979) The Ascent (1977) Fantastic Planet (1973) The Holy Mountain (1973)
The Critical Drinker and Nerdrotic MOSTLY get it right (aside from Civil War and Fall, off the top of my head). And of course my other fellow TH-cam critics. Would love to get you on a livestream! Shoot me a message 😃
Multi of Madness wasn’t a good example. The scores weren’t even ridiculously high, and Elizabeth Olsen did slap. Overall really appreciate your breakdown but I keep having to rewatch how you breakdown the RT score dynamics. It’s all BS to be honest and Siskel and Ebert were able to analyze films with the more scientific and more human use of their thumbs 👍🏼. You don’t get into how so much of that is them grading its wokeness and how many colors they can count.
letterboxd to me is what candy crush is to my mom
letterboxd truly changed the way i watch movies. i mean, now i can't watch a movie peacefully, without thinking about how many stars i will give it, or what my review is going to be, but it's totally worth it.
This it’s too hard!!!
I am not the same person I was after discovering letterboxd
dude, the editing is immaculate

This dude is definitely going to blow up if he keeps this up. Its insanely high quality
Guilty of abusing the 4 star button on letterboxd 😔
Letterboxd has corrupted me as a person. I used to be an innocent little guy, but now? I logged around 500 movies last year.
5:56 3 Paragraphs? Weak. Once wrote a review with over 30. Edit: today I just finished writing a 23 paragraph one with massive paragraphs, it never ends.
I’m a nerd lmaooo
The Wii Sports vinyl in the back goes hard
beyond excited for this channel a year from now, the potential and the quality is off the charts

I didn’t even know letterboxd existed, will now convert all my friends to have it. Dope video!
I was thinking that rotten tomatoes isn't that bad when watching this, then remembered I only use it to read really bad opinions
You're so on point with RT. I have exactly the same thoughts after several years of looking at their scores for the movies. Def gonna check LB, never used it.
I had a list of like 50 movies i wanted to watch before i downloaded letterboxd a year ago. Now my watchlist has 2,300 films on it lmao
Real
Oh yeah, I'm a big letterboxed enjoyer, I also forced all my friends to get it. issue is, none of them use it and I'm the only reason that some of them ever even watch movies
Letterboxd should be the way to go, and I hope it becomes more mainstream like rotten tomatoes. Cause screw rotten tomatoes.
i disagree, as a person that lovesLetterboxd the main thing I love about it is that it feels like it is an app made exclusively for movie fans, it becoming more mainstream would in my opinion ruin the experience
I was just rewatching the physical media video and took a nap an hour and now a new video is up😁
2:00 the Black Phone slander 😢
facts
Yeah I agree rotten tomatoes feels the worst of the movie reviewing sites
Metacritic > Rotten Tomatoes
I was just beginning to get into film, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to be fully engrossed in the art form, but when I joined Letterboxd, I discovered so much excellent cinema that I just went completely over the edge, and I still am.
Relatable comments on Letterboxd :D Sound exactly like my experience!

this is why i trust the peeps on letterboxd
Damn, that's what I call a genuine old-school aesthetic between the furniture color and the projector.
By the projector, I mean the one used in the video, not the promoted one.
Little late to it but another great video.
Your presentation is definitely my favorite quality from your videos.
DUDE YOU DESERVE SO MANY MORE SUBSCRIBERS, LIKE WHAT THE HECK?? 😮... YOUR CONTENT IS BETTER THAN MOST OF TH-cam CONTENT I'VE SEEN
Letterboxd & CinemaScore made me a cinema lover! I took multiple film classes when I was in High School & College! It made me appreciate the art form even more as I’m an aspiring director & writer!
Love the videos, man. Keep it up. Keep it up!!!
Black Phone and Smile were great
It amazes me that nobody talks about Metacritic being way more reliable than Rotten Tomatoes.
Scream VI got a 76% on rotten tomatoes with 309 reviews and it has a 6.70 out of 10
Last night in soho has a lower score and it has a 6.90 out of 10.

Fantastic planet is such a great film! Love the soundtrack to it

I'm a Trakt user with Letterboxd brain that refers most to IMDb ratings, ak I weird?
that's a sick title
Now I must know why you don’t like The Black Phone. Yeah it’s a low budget horror but it’s not as bad as those other movies you listed with it!
I like Letterboxd but it really is filled with some of the most painfully unfunny people on the planet. So annoying when you want to see what other people thought of a film but 90% of the reviews are the shittiest one liners you’ve ever heard of

Letter boxes turns movies into content. Read cinema books if you're so curious

Legendary
8:50 me😅
You kind of look like a young Steve Buscemi
Nice to see someone perfectly describe the effect Letterboxd had with me.
If anyone wants to see my 1 line reviews Thunder21
