I recently heard a theory that says Gyarados aren't naturally aggressive. Their rage is just the result of all the trauma and hate they received as Magikarp.
It's funny how similarly we think, to the point that back when i was actively having ideas on a fan region, Magikarp were loved and respected throughout the region, which caused them to evolve into Gyarados that were Water/Fairy and acted as protectors.
I would imagine that if Magikarp is so weak now but was once stronger, that would imply that for years only the weakest survived. To me, I imagine that what probably would happen is overhunting/targeted culling of the species to prevent stronger Gyarados from sprouting up and wreaking havoc.
Lore and theories are what got me back into Pokémon around sun and moon. Channels like yours have always been a treat, I appreciate the work you’ve put in over the years 💪
It's actually interesting you made the connection with the radio waves in Johto because that's how you're able to find rare Pokemon in Gen 2 and the remakes; it's like a combination of the radio waves and DJ Mary's voice changes Pokemon's physiology to compel them to show up in various places in Johto
That depends on when a Legends Johto would be set. If it's set before Lugias tower burned to the ground, that'd put it before roughly 1850, if we equate the Pokemon-worlds calendar to ours, while the settlement of Hisui by the Galaxy Expidition, according to real world time, would only have happened after 1870. So if that's when Legends Johto would be set, we could actually still explore Kamados village back when it was still around most likely. If it's set after, however, things become a bit more murky, I could easily see Game Freak deciding to put the game 20 years later just to get the Lake of Rage we know.
I would love them to do a movie about the lake of rage in a detective pikachu live-action style. Ethan and Lance taking down team rocket, battling the red gyarados, taking on Mahogany gym and more.
Johto has some of my favorite folklore in pokemon, there's so much to tap into there and little to no answers unless you dig deep. The radiowaves theory is really interesting. Once again asking for a Legends Johto hahaha
Awesome video! Love the IRL intros! In my headcanon, Kamado lost his home in the Lake of Rage incident and lost his wife in Galar. Their costumes in the picture seem more western than eastern and we do know he likely was in Galar (where he received the Galarian Armor). And what do we have in Galar? The Lake of Outrage. I believe he lost his wife there, maybe even to a Gyarados attack and named the lake himself.
Nice video. One note, Sanqua isn't necessarily an ancestor of Lance. Since Karen and Lance are cousins rather than siblings, it's very likely that someone married into the family to effect their genealogy. Most likely Sanqua's side married into (or at least back into) the Dragon Tamer Clan, given that she doesn't use any dragons herself.
Johto is definitely getting a remake/legends game and LoReEEee like the Lake of Rage will be present (hopefully not another let’s go or bdsp situation)
Yes I would definitely love to see Johto to get a remake or Legends game on the Nintendo Switch. It would be a great way to fix all the issues with Johto such as Gen 2 Pokémon availability in Johto such as Houndour, Murkrow, Magby, Elekid, Slugma, Misdreavous and Larvitar, fix Johto’s level curve and adding Johto Pokémon to Johto Gym Leaders.They could also add events such as Giovanni appearing at the Johto Radio Tower, Lorelei appearing at Seafoam Islands and Agatha appearing in Lavender Town outside the House of Memories. The Johto remake can use Raikou and Entei as version mascots.
If Kamodo's home was indeed destroyed by Gyrados, I don’t think Laventon is aware of that. As a professor, he would naturally cite the most direct source he had in his pokedex entries. It doesn’t make sense for him to mention ancient texts that don't even identify Gyrados by name yet NOT mention that he personally knows multiple refugees from a Gyrados incident that happened within his own lifetime.
This theory never gets old but its also one of those theories that gets richer as new lore and pokemon and world building is added in each gen. excellent job Toby and the editing was top notch as always! excited for more! ^_^
This is an interesting take. Gyarados are very vicious pokemon, so using radio waves to artificially induce evolution could have unforeseen outcomes, hence the RED Gyarados.
I wonder if the reason we can fly to the lake of rage is just because it's a leftover from the beta it would make sense, but this is a pretty cool theory non the less.

Hmm. I'd heard that the ScVi datamines indicated a convergent species to Magikarp/Gyarados, not a regional form... but in hindsight that could have been assumed because the datamines were tied to the Pokedex slots for the Toedscool line, which are a convergent species.
A lot of Johto love recently. Even a majority of the Kitakami dex is Johto-originated Pokemon (then Gen 4, Gen 3, and some Gen 5 & 7). I almost wonder if Kitakami is set in the actual Sinjoh area or slightly west of Johto and close to Hoenn. With the Switch 2 on the horizon next year 2024, will Nintendo launch the system with a Let's Go Johto game or a Legends Johto game before the big Gen 10/30th anniversary extravaganza in 2026?
If they ever make a Legends Johto it be cool to see if the theory is true and we get to see the town that existed there and/or watch it be destroyed by a Gyarados
Definitely a theory that makes a lot of sense, although I'm a bit hung up on Beni saying their village was "burned" to the ground. If it was simply burned to the ground, then how does that tie together with the Lake of Rages creation? Of course, the wording might just be not exact, might not tell the entire story, but if it is... then Kamados and Benis village couldn't have been located in the part of the Lake of Rage that dries up when it's not raining, because if there were no changes to the topology when their village was destroyed... then it should've still been flooded whenever it was raining. I definitely also think that the intention was to have their original village in Johto be in the area of the Lake of Rage, as I said, I'm just getting hung up on the wording there, and there IS always the possibility that they're talking of another village somewhere somewhat randomly in Johto. On the topic of the Goldenrod Radio Tower though, aside from the owner just knowing about how devestating the radio waves could be, lets remember that the Goldenrod Radio Tower also used to be a tower just like the Tin Tower in Ecruteak, maybe that location actually has more tied to it than we realize.

With Basculin, think about its design. This Pokemon looks vicious and would definitely be a formidable fighter against Magikarp. So much so that even if they couldn't kill the adults they probably ate the eggs, thus reducing the Magikarp population in Unova and expanding the Basculin one. And Unova doesn't have a lot of fish, in fact most of the water Pokemon are salt-water or need large expanses of water to swim and breed in-ie Alolamola, Frillish, and Jellicent. While Stunfisk would stay in marshes. So that's why in nature preserves, and only Black 2 and White 2 we see Magikarp in Unova. They had to be brought in and monitored(which I would love it if Unova got a Magikarp regional form that was more durable towards Basculin).
I just finished vicious by swab and it was soooooooo good. I found it to be predictable,which usually bothers me, but the story was so well told and worth reading that I didn't mind the predictability.

I've been looking into him a lot and i have a list of hints and mentions in game that suggest he was hired by Geeta whilst the gym leader in Hoenn. Which would mean he's the trainer that your Dad in Ruby / Sapphire replaces.
Him and Norman are the only trainers to give out the Facade TM, he's named after a Japanese plant and there are hints he's not native to Paldea, with him eating at a Japanese restaurant and using it as the gym. Obviously I think he's from Hoenn instead for my theory. He's also the only trainer to have a Gym in the game instead of battling outdoors, and he's the only Gym Leader who exclusively uses Pokémon of his typing, terastalising a Staraptor that's already part-normal, so he follows the conventions of classic gym leaders from Japan. This last one is the biggest stretch but I thought it was odd that his Staraptor only has 2 moves, both those moves were introduced in Gen 3, so it could be he taught his Staraptor those moves in Hoenn and then brought it with him to Paldea
I think Arbok and Bloodmoon Ursaluna are regional formes, but not regional variants. Regional formes are just aesthetic changes, while regional variants change to survive

Omega Ruby: When Magikarp evolves into Gyarados, its brain cells undergo a structural transformation. It is said that this transformation is to blame for this Pokémon's wildly violent nature. Mega Evolution also affects its brain, leaving no other function except its destructive instinct to burn everything to cinders and places a burden on its body. The stress causes it to become all the more ferocious. If a temporary transformation does that, what would a permanent change would do to it except go into a major frenzy. Yeah, the Toedscool line has files named Land Magikarp and Land Gyarados.
My theory is that it just started as a variation in color and that giving every Pokemon a "shiny" was an afterthought.
