13PM user here, will skip the 14Pro this year. yes the display island is cool but I really dont think its a big of a feature for an upgrade.
14 PM cost 200€ more than 13PM in germany now (1449€ vs 1249€) and 14 Plus is 1149€ starting price same as last years 13 Pro. And no price cut for 13 line so it's same price with 1 year old hardware. EU prices are crazy.
Most likely due to inflation, Australia prices are also expensive as well

Lot of plusses to the 14 Pro but the downsides include 1) Lightening still lives, 2) WiFi 6 and not 6e. This really is a big deal longer term. 802.11ax does not reach its potential as it shares the 5GHz band with 802.11ac and earlier devices. 3) Pill or notch. This is still a "safe" area for software developers meaning that videos will not utilize the entire screen for example. It is still an eyesore for games or photos that are enlarged to take up the entire screen. We will still need to see if thermal throttling is an issue for various use-cases.
My guess is they'll go Wi-Fi 7 next year. But yes I agree, no update to connectivity or charging
For someone who uses his phone for 4 years minimum like myself, can you explain on difference between the wifi connectivity and the impact for the future please?
@@uz.f1746 WiFi 7 will operate in the 6 GHz band and be free of sharing the medium (air) with 5 GHz devices. There are great advantages in this regard with respect to latency, power consumption, and throughput. WiFi 7 has IoT in mind with respect to its architecture in addition to high throughput. However adoption will likely be slow so a four year time horizon is not a significant reason to hold off till next year in my view. Bluetooth 5.3 however is nice to see in the iPhone14.

This is why Apple still gets away with anything, because reviewers use quite a muted criticism for them. I mean just look at the way Thomas says "bit disappointed" at 6:01. I mean how is a 60 Hz display on a $700 phone anything but a "huge disappointment". Even $200 dollar phones come with 120 hz in 2022.

It's a beautiful smartphone, the dynamic island is actually a clever way to use the space of a notch. But can we talk about the European prices? Its absolutely ridiculous. I would rather spend that money on a foldable then paying €1300+ for a base iPhone 14 Pro with a 6.1 inch screen!

I hope that applies to the pro models also. Because my iphone 12 pro dims to about 50% brightness when warm. Can’t see who I am video calling and I can’t see the picture I am trying to take. Say, on a tropical beach.
Going to be a problem with eSIM only when travelling. Many countries still use prepaid SIM cards.
True - although you can often get prepaid eSIMS.
eSIM is US only for this very reason apparently. Good luck Apple getting eSIM to be a thing in places like India. Its just not happening because of how cheap the tariifs are on prepaid sim cards
This is again Apple pushing needless technology when it's not necessary still. Even if eSIMs only model is for US, it is based on the assumption US residents would not be travelling to regions using SIM cards. We need to point out Apple follies and not blindly accept what they push out.

The regular 14/14+ should have been called 13S/13S plus for it being a tock update. The pro models though are a good upgrade. Got the regular 12 2yrs ago cause its not that much different from the pros (60hz, identical cameras, same chip). This time tho thats definitely not the case. Im picking up a pro max by december 🤞

That dynamic island looks like it’ll take about 20 minutes to become super annoying… banner notifications and incoming calls are a bit annoying anyway, but now most ~EVERYTHING~ will utilize that island/hub? I’m not sure I like the idea of the visual distraction it’ll create as it alters its shape and size constantly
That floating slot that’ll exist while watching stuff in landscape mode will be annoying as well for me

I like how they made the front camera an interactive UI element. However I agree with you that a better zoom option is needed on the main cameras. Satellite connectivity is the most useful feature I think. Not enough for me to jump ship from Android though.

Apple really aren’t trying hard enough when you look at the competition. The only reason I have an iPhone is for the security and transparency of the App Store.
Ridiculous prices here in the uk. Especially as an English reviewer I feel like you should be covering the fact that every new iPhone starts 150 pounds higher than last year. Especially bad when the 14 is essentially a 13 in all but name
In the US, Samsung are being very predatory, trying to kill the competition (RIP LG), and that means Apple has subsidised US iPhones. So great trade-ins and prices remain the same. If Apple gets beaten up by Samsung then we lose in Europe as lower economies of scale means higher prices. Samsung's policy of destroying the competition is bad for consumers and they are partly to blame along with the exchange rate (dollar -v- Euro/Pound).

This is actually a very valid point, i didn't even think of this.
You do not touch the camera part as it is inactive. The notch expands left and right and up and down and the screen is where you will be touching.
And you always have to press the top of the phone, it will be impossible to use with one hand

No sim tray is definitely a big deal. It's so useful to put local payg sims in when abroad to avoid hefty roaming outside the EU.

So, yes, for travelling, I would just put a PAYG SIM in my secondary phone. it is not as if when I am on holiday that I am on the phone 24/7 and business people will def have two phones (personal and business).

Yeah, that's basically down to currency movements i.e. depreciation of the pound against the dollar. Unfortunately makes things more expensive in the UK and in the EU where currencies have devalued massively in the last year

I've just ordered an iPhone 14 Pro Max in Deep Purple on a 36 Month Contract through EE with 512 GB of Storage. Got Apple Music as a Smart Benefit included, only paying £1 a month more than I am now currently. Going to order the Mous Limitless 5.0 Aramid Fibre Case next week alongside a Mous wrist Strap in Orange. Going to stick a Spigen tempered glass screen protector on the wee beast to. Looking at investing in a pair of Apple Airpods 2 later in the year and a Mous Wireless Charger and dock later to.

The 14 Pros is very impressive in all aspects, especially how they find a very creative way to hide the face ID/camera punch hole with dynamic island, but the normal 14 is extremely underwhelming, seriously Apple?! A15? Still a 60 hz display? Only two cameras? Why wouldn’t we just buy the 13 Pros instead with the same performance, more camera, and 120hz refresh rate, while probably only being 100 dollars more expensive?
That is not case in every country. Here 13 Pro still costs USD 1199 and 14 Plus is starting from 899. So, If you want bigger screen and better battery life. Its better to pick 14 plus.
I think it might just be intended by apple the the 13 Pro, at a "slightly" higher price is still better so people keep buying it

It looks to me that the pill takes away more screen real estate. Yes it’s smaller than the notch but the space above the pill is completely useless so when you include that into the reduced screen real estate it makes watching videos worse.
Basically the pill drops down further than the notch.
I mean, there are limitations in placing every electronics crammed into that tiny space. If it was a notch people will end up countering with "the same old design" card.

yeah, i am not an apple user, but i simply despise the notch/pill stuff. i understnad they have hardware for face id which requires space, but it's now a few years, couldn't they just do a similar thing with the camera, as android does for so many freaking years?

No sim tray? I'm not so sure about that. What if I shatter my iphone? I'd have to live contactless for the duration of the repair when I could just swap the sim to a spare phone. I hope this feature stays in the US.
The benefits are improved water resistance and if your phone is stolen or lost you can easily find it as the bad people cannot remove the eSIM. Will be great when it comes to the UK, but we have to get the carriers on board over here.
As for if you shatter your phone, I assume that you will also have the option for a normal SIM for when you swap out.
Agreed. I was all in until I heard about the eSim. I keep old phones as a spare, and swap Sims occasionally. Now I have to get permission from my provider to swap eSims and do like 10 steps to swap. Creates another layer of control for Cellphone Companies and annoyance for customers.

Thingking to get 14 Pro max tomorrow, but i was wondering if they fix the screen dimming issue??? This is a huge drawback for me because i play games on my iphone and it is really frustrating while you're on the game and suddenly the screen will be dim and can't barely used you Iphone unless quit the game 😒😒😒.

14 Pro costs 35% more compared to the 13 Pro in Hungary (more than 1400 USD or EUR for the base, 128GB model). I'll stick to my 12 Pro for a few years.

@@jackwilson5542 Sure, but that is only one factor of it. Apple's pricing policy is to convert the net dollar value to euro with exchange rate risk, then do the same once again from euro to hungarian forint. After this, there is a special tax for Artisjus, THEN comes the VAT, which is 27% here.
The dynamic island on the 14 Pro is very nice. However it could have a fatal flaw...fingerprints and smudges on the front camera. I'd be really curious in how that would work out in the real world. Only time will tell.

Was waiting this year for the new iphone to be released. My iphone 6s is starting to give me trouble and I didn’t want to but the 13 if this was coming out soon. Glad I waited
3:10 The telephoto lens does not have an f/1.78 aperture, it's still f/2.8 like last year. Unless you mean the 2x telephoto using the 1x wide lens cropped which isn't actually the 3x telephoto lens.
One big plus for the 14 plus is the weight. I've found my 13 Pro Max uncomfortable for long periods of usage so that 35 gram difference with same size screen (more Vs the 14 Pro Max) could make it a nice option.

My initial response to the "dynamic island" was that's cool but I think that over time that will really start to bug me if I was using it. Plus it's ugly af if your viewing any content whilst not using the dynamic island notifications etc
The dynamic island has a pretty cool software implementation, but that extra dead space on top of the island is just that, dead space. I know it's the camera hardware that forces the phone screen to look that way. So it will be nice to see the teardown when the phone comes out.
Iphone known for their best front facing display so hard to get rid of that fat pill. They just need under screen display to hide it but it's not at that level yet because android had done it but failed.

Remarkably uncompelling evolution. The iPhone saga seems to have played out about 5 years ago. It's OK, Apple. I can't think of anything I want or need, either. And I see many tech item prices receeding. Should I be all aquiver that Apple has kept the same high prices?
I read that the average upgrade cycle for an iPhone is >4 years so Apple understands this, and spends more time developing than rushing a new feature to market. This is sensible and why iPhone sales remain high and the Galaxy S line had dropped 50% in 2.5 years. Business is business and Apple knows what it is doing.
As a iphone 13 mini user, and it truly being the best iphone i have ever used, i for one surely see no reason upgrading. I still wonder to this day how anyone would prefer a larger size to a 13 mini for daily use

Is blue colour is the same as sierra blue that 13 pro had?
So, essentially the 14 is very similar to the 13. Or will this be an upgrade? I was thinking about getting the 14, but feel more compelled to buy the 13, plus I imagine the 13 will be slightly cheaper. Haha this has now confused me 🤣
So now we have a "digital notch" but now called a "Dynamic island" that is more intrusive/larger cluttering up the main screen??? Its now larger than the notch cut out it is suppose to replace but now its highlighted instead of blending in to the bezel. As much as I love the flavor of the Apple koolaid this insulting and absolutely laughable.
I am not bothered with this notification widget being useful. I usually enable the notifications I want, and disable the types I want to check manually.

I love what they did with the pill hole punch cut out... But it honestly looks suuuper distracting and terrible when "Dynamic Island" isn't being used.. it looks so much bigger than any other hole punch I've seen before, and such an eye sore when it doesn't have the extra os info

@@Young_Dab i dunno man... Punch holes have been around for a while, I've been using punch hole screen phones for years, even when they were bigger (S10+), and using one now, so i AM used to it already, yet the iPhones version still stands out way more...

Apple puts function over form so they keep the notch and cut-out. I remember when the Galaxy S line had iris scanning, notification lights, dual cameras, etc, but I suppose Samung fans prefer less features to look prettier. For me a smartphone is for use not a piece of jewellery so I am happy for the notch, or pill.
Does the gold color on the 14 pro looks like the 13 pro gold or does it look slightly different?

I keep going back and forth... I love it, when it's active/being used, but when it's not, it's such a huge contrasting cut out just always floating there... Navigating through settings, and anything else Fullscreen, it just looks massively gross
The telephoto does not has a f/1.78 😅 that's on the main sensor (which previously had f/1.5). The Telephoto has no updates in hardware whatsoever.

@@JRods2 So far the only improvement I can tell is a little faster processor than previous 13, and the camera stabilization. As of know we dont know anything new yet in specific.

Most people upgrading to the iPhone 14 arer coming from the iPhone 8 or even older. The average upgrade cycle is >4 years. Very few people upgrade yearly so your point is very moot. If you want more features get the Pro models.
I own IP13 right now, upgrading to 14pro is bit more than the budget should I go for 14 plus?

Me. I go for 13 Pro right now. 25% cheaper in EUROPE and no important difference between these two.
