The above links to an article from the Australian Women''s Weekly dated Oct 16 1974, about the then new Torque program and Peter Wherrett.
"Torque began in 1974 and continued to rate highly in its evening timeslot for the ABC until it came to an end in 1980. Peter Wherrett always said he made the series with the public broadcaster because he wanted to be able to pull no punches about those vehicles that had safety or engineering problems. It was this forthright honesty that attracted the audience to Torque over the years." (Janet Bell - 'Australian Screen' NFSA) - บันเทิง
This was very good and informative.
Life was so much better for most people in the 80s. _
I remember this from decades ago. It didn’t stop me drink-driving (hey I was 18 in the ‘80s) but I always tried to be extra careful as I knew I was impaired.
So I guess it did some good.
Professor Starmer probably did as much for road safety in Australia as any other individual, if not the most. He was rightly considered the leading expert on the influence of drugs and alcohol on motor skills, and was given a good send off by his profession when he passed 3 years ago.
Ronan Rogers my Professor of Clinical Pharmacology. He gave us beers and then put us in the driving simulator.
Funny how he made a few bob on the side creating doubt for drink driving charges. Some worked, some didn't.
I used to love going to the wreckers with my father😅.
My dad and I would always go to the wreckers and the auction when I was a kid. Bloody miss those days.
Really good episode. Well done ABC. Not something people would do today. But the points being made are so accurate today.
I remember when -08 came in. People seriously arguing that they drove better after 3 or 4 beers
Please come back Peter. We need you!
A motoring program that covered conservation of the environment in 1980! Wherrett was indeed ahead of his time.
Just without the Globalist leftard wokeness we have now.
@@mb3558 I guess if being woke means not vilifying intellectually disabled people with abhorrent insults like 'leftard', then I'll put up with it.
@@gilesflower How is the term 'leftard' an insult to intellectually disabled people? Do you even know what the slang term represents...answer NO! Unfortunately people like you will always be insulted and or 'offended' if you choose to be offended.
The environmental movement began in the 1970’s.
@@mvfc7637 Earlier, in fact. My point was that Wherrett was one of the first auto journalists to consider environmentalism worthwhile.
Love the more respectful language use of the day...
Peter Wherrett was a very eloquently spoken motoring critic.
Very suave velvet Green sweater too.
thanks buddy awesome stuff to revisit the time!...yet still so bloody relevant!!
I want a green velour jumper now
Golden Breed Widcheater,
My sentiments exactly
That's the bloody trouble these days, everyone's in such a terrific hurry
They need to show this programme today. The only change has been a moderate reduction in blood alcohol level.
Sydney CBD looked more bustling and happening in 1980 and there was endless nice and inviting shops visible everywhere. It looks decidedly dank in comparison now. Yep haven't we come far.
V_ AP even the commercial stations gave us programmes with integrity. I saw an excerpt of a show with Phillip Adams discussing some intellectual topic on channel Seven in 1982. I immediately thought this standard would never be shown by them now. They are now run evil greedy corporate types. They used to care.
That beer looks like good Old fashioned stuff. Is it KB.?
No wonder Adrian's driving was so bad after drinking Kid's Beer!
An excellent series, Peter Wherrett is probably the best motoring journalist, unlike the loud clumsy baboon Clarkson.
The motorbike used i think it was a Yamaha RD250LC i could be wrong, great bike!
Clarkson was fine until TG, but that show changed into an entertainment programme around 20 years ago.
Forget drink driving, it’s much worse now. The fuckers aren’t even looking at the road to even make a decision to stop in time due to being buried into their phones.
Lot of that's pritty common sense that sadly is getting less & less common, but with the bike vs the car in braking in different conditions that's invaluable advice
A bit ironic that Wherrett was later convicted of DUI.
Good advice even for today's drivers.
There should be a law against wearing velour jumpers.
You made him drink KB Lager? No wonder his driving turned to shit! That stuff could've killed 'im !! 🤣
Nothing wrong with "Kid's Beer".
@@lundsweden ...or "sex on the beach"
To prove our point, we decided to get my mate Adrian shitarse drunk and run some tests on him...
Just one correction to the statement about motorcycle steering. It is not done primarily by the movement of body weight, it is primarily done by counter steering at speeds above 10kmh or so (ie once the front wheel is rotating fast enough for gyroscopic effect to occur, the fastest and most accurate way to steer left is to push the left hand grip forward, and to turn right push the right grip forward).
You have to lean to create the turn, and it takes more than 10kph to do the counter steer, you literally do turn left to go left with the handle at those low speeds.
KB was a good drop.
“ ... his later results don’t bear thinking about”. I’m imagining Adrian singing “My Way” off key whilst wearing a tu-tu and a comical party hat.
.08 BAC!? - No wonder there were probably so many road fatalities back then.
BAC limit was dropped to .05 in Dec 1980
@@adoz56 Probably after they watched this video lol
@Aussie Pom What's that got to do with the 0.8 standard back then? Obviously now it's changed reg. employers etc.
@@adoz56
Not everywhere in Australia
The Fiat X19 he drives at the start was an interesting car.
Fun to drive too. Pity there are so few left.
Everyone should get a 6pack with their P plates, and a braking test.
He could have been a Prime minster
Loved his stereotypes.
He really should have watched this video himself....
I remember something about that.
But, c’mon, who hasn’t snuck home slightly wobbly?
At least now, after 40 some years of policing levels of BAC or whatever,
not many young serious drivers accept doing it as “normal”.
Like smoking, it is socially unacceptable.
P.S. I’m a boomer, smoker, and I believe that as such for 50 years paying excise
$120.00, yes, DOLLARS per 50 grams(two ounces in old money) of rolling baccy
is a shit deal for us old cunts, soon to die anyway.
Fuck you Australian gubbermint. And Hawke; I shit on your grave.
KB! My grandmother used to drink it.
Mine too! By the box load.
In a steel tin.
With the Orange peel feel can@@gregorywall2479
Looks like i will never drive ,,,,
Warwick Farm looking a bit sad.
Ole mate didn’t like 3rd gear 😂 2nd to 4th
Top motorcyclist of the day? What were the other 7 like? 🤣
Would give them room if they didn't lane split to get ahead of the jam and waited like every other motorist around them
That last lane change test was totally "Set Up"...he either locked it up on purpose or pulled the hand brake On...you can see the Skid marks...Wherrett was notorious for setting things up!
Sadly Peter did not practise what he preached, and was busted for DUI...
Twice.
@@jeffveraart2695 no one is perfect
Didn’t put their seatbelts on
Was the man in the first scene an hirsute Edwin Maher?
A fruit way ahead of his time.😳
Love it but so unbelievably far out of date ... the entire series almost comically made.
