Staggering to think that back then, that '54 Packard was only as old as a VR Commodore is now. These are fascinating videos from the past, thanks for these uploads.

I remember watching it in 1979 when I was 15, to me it was the best thing on tv at the time, quite an anomaly even then, amongst the drivel. Wish I could find the 6 other programs on vhs on eBay, but unlikely. Maybe ABC will release it on TH-cam as part of its archive series. I've noticed they've put up some torque excepted. Glad you like the program!

Great to see these posted in TH-cam. They bring back memories.
0:55 - Not sure Ferrari (back then) were synonymous with engineering excellence.
In later years and perhaps now they may be, but many early Ferrari's were poorly designed and built.
Some even used rear indicator lights that were available for trailers, and their interior design/reliability was poor.
The early Ferrari V8 and V12's also suffered from concerning reliability issues that (aside from some of them having their root cause as parts clearance and/or machining tolerance issues, they) were associated with eye watering costs.

I wonder if the owner of the 300sl gull wing knew that Peter was going to fang the car around like that!

The 300SL and the Ferrari might be part of Lindsay Fox’s collection.

The Mercedes Benz 300SL is meant to be driven hard. They had a fuel injected engine and 4 speed manual transmission. At the time, they were the fastest production car in the world. They had a top speed in excess of 160mph. Most family cars aren’t even that fast. Bear in mind that the Mercedes Benz gullwing had a six cylinder engine and was naturally aspirated. If it had a supercharger fitted, it would have been a very scary car.

  • @ronanrogers4127

The Mercedes Gullwing 300 is one of the most beautiful designs ever. They’re worth around US$5m now.
Those were the days, when an automotive journalist from down under could get to drive cars worth, literally, tens of millions of dollars today , and do so all in one episode.

I don't know where the o.p. got that idea. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️ (Probably some dim memories, from rheumy-eyed glances back at yesteryear. Y'know - when all old things were undoubtedly better than any new! 👴👴)
Expensive foreign cars are frequently driven by Strayan motoring journos (+ some hacks) on track and Australian public roads, for multiple Australian publications.

That’s a 1955 C1, just a couple of years after the first “prototype” model in ‘53. These were the first V8 corvettes, but they weren’t really popular until they started getting the fuel injected V8 and side flashes in ‘57.
