Good life lesson hidden in here. I caught Mike realizing even though he thought a flag or marker around the conduit riser wasn’t necessary, Melissa knew him (and most men) would eventually forget about it. Rather than dismissing her thoughts as unnecessary, he realized she was probably right and even if he didn’t think she was, he made her feel like her opinion was valued and appreciated. Might not be as idealistic as described but he certainly caught him self going down a hole and attempted to make it right. Props to you!

The only thing I can think of for me that proved useful when doing a new build was to add an outdoor hydrant. we put one in by our well and ended up putting our garden beside it. surprising how useful it is. If tractor or side by side gets caked with mud, I can pull out to the hydrant and wash it off in the yard rather than in the garage and have that going down the drains or on the driveway. If it is near the pool, you could use it to wash off feet and hands from fresh grass clippings before a kid jumped in and added all the debris to the pool.

Great use of the grading bucket. They can be really handy! Our daughter had her reception on our property last August, never enough hours in the day getting ready for that. When you have that Father-Daughter dance, you won’t remember one second of the time it took to get the place ready. Have a blessed year!

After 20 years operating my own landscape/irrigation business, I've had several shovels that looked like you "fav" shovel. Not very many though that were used by employees...for some reason theirs always had a defective handle and broke. Where I grew up, we called that a "south Georgia backhoe". If you didn't know where the start button was for it, we didn't have any use for you on our crew.

Great video. You probably know Tractor Supply has 3k & smaller tanks. I bought ours from Ferguson Plumbing Supply & it was $3800 1.5 years ago here in Hilo. Rumor has it one company has bought up the HDPE tank business nationwide so prices are much higher now. I was told to figure $1 per gal. Here in Hawaii many homeowners use Galvanized tanks with a cover, but I opted for the closed tank due to rodents, snails...getting into the tank & polluting the water. Our area of the Big Island does not have public water, we all use rainwater catchment systems. We get 85” of rain annually in our area so water is usually not an issue. You could supplement your well water use as well, if needed. Water delivery for County water is $250 for 4,000 gals here.
Good luck in your search, it will help to have your own extra water supply, adding to a self sufficient aspect.

Good morning from a rainy NC. The really severe stuff went about 20 miles S of us, but have we ever got some heavy rain!
Your decision to switch to the excavator with the grading bucket turned out to be a good one - things moved pretty quickly and the result was close to final finish quality. Probably a testament to operator skill though - I’d probably have had to stay with the tractor! Your drone shots on that were great.

When you showed moving gravel with the MX 5400 it appeared you don't have a cutting edge on the bucket, wondering why you wouldn't protect the bucket. Also regarding your cistern, I would consider checking out an area that has just hooked up to town water and there may be a good deal on a used one. It's not like they wear out.
Enjoy your show. Have a wooded acreage of our own and can relate to a lot of your projects and issues.

I agree. I’d be surprised if we’ve needed deeper than 18 around here for 30 years. Mine is three feet and more but if I was someone digging by hand, it ain’t seeing no three feet. As a snowmobiler and winter enthusiast, I wish three feet plus was necessary, but as someone who pays close attention to how “bad” winter is, I’m disappointed often enough that I would trust two feet even. Love the machines. Boys don’t grow up, their toys just get more expensive and their sand boxes get bigger👍😂

Mike I'm sure you've heard this several times, but you can ask Jimmy Mak the Plumber, your water line for western Pa should be 6 inches lower then the deepest recorded frost line for this area. Western Pa. is 36 inches deep on the frost line so you water line should be at a minimum of 42 inches deep. The last time we had a winter cold enough to freeze water service lines was 2013-2014, our winters are pretty mild compared to what they were years ago. While you have Jimmy on the phone ask him what "Loam-A-phobia" is...... lol

Tractor Supply has a 3,000 gallon, black polyethylene tank for $1,900 in Northern California. If you find one for less, I'd love to know, because I'm in the market. Oh, and though we get a couple feet or more of snow every winter here in the mountains, our water lines are less than a foot deep. It just doesn't get that bitter-cold.

With the number of viewers you have there's bound to be skeptics. Ever see a boat, RV, Motor Home etc, sit in a yard and some years not get used at all. When you get a piece of machinery it GETS used. Used in many ways even I wouldn't have expected. At 74, I've seen alot. I like the look of wood. I actually love wood. I worked in a furniture factory because I love the look and smell of wood. Have you considered maybe using old railroad ties to frame your back area? I think they look good especially if landscaped with, well, you name it.

I found it was cheaper for me as I could transport the smaller tanks with my trailer. The single larger tank needed to be delivered and the delivery was very expensive.

Hi Mike love your show. A few points I noticed that you did not put down Electric and Water notice tapes about a foot down over the pipes. I thought the water trench would have been a good job for Melissa to practice on the excavator. You could have been what we call in the UK the Banksman guiding the dig.

You would have to put a filter screen on your down spouts for the gutters of the building, but during the wet season, you could use a cleaned out IBC tote at each corner of the building to gather water. That would give you a 2000 gallon collection capability. Cheaper than paying for it to be delivered. Then as they fill up just use the forks to bring it to your tank and fill it up. I use this method around my stables to supply all the water for my animals which at its peak is about 1800 gallons a month. Granted I have to use alternatives if we have an extremely long dry spell.

Interesting solution! Thanks for offering it. I guess you empty before those totes fill completely? Or does your fork loader have capacity to lift them? They’d weigh a couple tons if full, wouldn’t they?

@@johnsadler8637 The ones around my stables stay stationary because the gather enough and any excess I drain off. The others I will usually only let get filled a third of the way before moving them over to drain into other stationary ones. For example I have one near my strawberry gardens modified into a drip irrigation, so it doesn't move, I just take the couple fed by the house gutters and when they get to 1/4-1/3 full will drag them over and fill up the drip system tote. But yeah unless you have a heavy duty fork lift or skid steer your not moving them full. Might be easier to put the totes on upraised platforms (likely concrete) and run gravity feed lines to the main tank. Different ways to do it depending on your exact needs and purposes.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Pretty good system you’ve built.

I had a barn about that same size with 1/2 of the roof downspouts piped into a 750 gal tank and never ran out of water. That was in Ohio. I would think the rainfall would be similar.

think about power pipe out to your water tank for a pump to get water back into the building .
