Just finished a throwback session of watching Broke and Boosted episode 6. For my NA-T budget SC300 build I was planning on using a CX Racing turbo manifold, and watching that episode made me reevaluate manifold choice for the 50th time since putting together a build outline, so naturally I type in "cx racing manifold test" and of course first comment I see is you. Wherever turbo Miata is mentioned I halfway expect to see you around, but the coincidence was still funny.
@@TheCarPassionChannel I know you probably get this a lot, but even though I don't own a Miata, just the ability to apply information and ideas from your videos to other vehicles is super helpful, especially because of how detailed they are. And the improvement over the last 5 years in video quality has been incredible. You have inspired me to try to make a similar channel documenting detailed forum information in video format but for NA-T conversion for 2jz cars like the SC300, IS300, and GS300 since 2jz-gte's are getting too expensive to swap into them. The only car I know of that gets more undeserved hate than the miata is the Porsche Boxster. Both get called "hairdressers cars" or "secretaries cars" by people who have never sat behind the wheel of one and realized that they are street legal go karts. I spent a decade in the highline car sales industry, I have lots of seat time in 6 figure price tag cars. Do you want to work the hell out of your Miata transmission or do you want to never get your 911 GT2 out of 3rd gear?
Chiming in. I've had a CXRacing kit on my 97 MX5 since 2018. I daily'd it for a while, ran it hard on weekends, and basically every time i take it out.. and a few hundred mile road trips. The ONLY things Ive changed from the CXRacing kit, is the exhaust manifold gasket (new OEM multilayer is better), dremmel'd out the WGA hole to fix boost creep (Thank you Greg AKA CarPassion) and made my own turbo flange gasket. The Downpipe fit perfect, the manifold was welded nicely and has had no cracks. Its been on 15PSI this whole time, and everything has still held up (knock on wood) around 250whp/240wtq. The "V2" kit (mine) was definitely WAY BETTER than the original they put out. I heard nothing but bad things on the version 1.
Hell yeah austin glad it wasnt a year before i saw you again!!!! But may i say the miata sounds better then i ever thought it would!! Keep the good work up man!!
I had a very similar rig so sharing my experience: the vent holes in your front bumper are actually creating less flow through the intercooler. I tried that also but found it was venting air OUT instead of IN. Weird aerodynamics. When I was driving track days, the intake temp would rise and EMS would retard timing. After installing a shroud over the holes to help direct air in, the temps dropped significantly. Contact me if you have any questions. Great job on the build. 👍
I have cxracing turbo kit 3years on my dc5 ..made 435hp first dyno session stock k20a2 then 1year later I upgrade to k24/k20 and make 560hp stock engine... And I have had no issues almost 4yrs and still counting.... Good kits for the buck or for a budget build...
Hey man I’m looking into boosting my 02 dc5 really been considering this kit happy to read that you’ve had no problems. Have you ever had any problems with the manifold, turbo or intercooler I hear the manifolds cheap the turbo is not name brand so can’t be trusted and the intercooler had an inefficient design also what size turbo did u get I’m thinking about there gt35. Thx if u reply really looking into this kit
Austin, first and foremost I like the look of your miata. I just purchased a gas saver miata, and Ive wanted another turbo car to play with so I have been looking up turbo kits and this video pretty much just makes me want to buy the CX racing kit opposed to the MK turbo kit.
I have a 1.6 turbo kit for sale in Central Florida $1600 comes with a megasquirt pnp 2 ecu as well. Cx racing manifold and turbo, hood exit exhaust, complete piping and intercooler, GM IAT, BMW VTPS, tapped oil pan etc.
For everyone asking about engine management, my advice is buy a used MS2PNP ecu which you can find for around 500 bucks. I then spent another $500 on a dyno tune. But its awesome
This is a great video. For me, u covered the most important part of the kit which was the manifold. I actually plan on doing what u did and buying a better turbo rather than sporting the shitty CXracing's turbo.
do you remeber the bolt size for the oil feed and oil return lines when they connect to the turbo. That’s the last thing i need to do on my car but i don’t know what size they are
I am in the process of installing this same exact kit on my miata. Did you tune the ECU yourself or did you take it to someone? If you did tune it yourself, how hard was that and can you make a video on it?
Thanks, and yes I went with a AEM X-Series one. Also, the wiring is super simple in a Miata. I installed it in the eyeball vent and used the cigarette lighter for power, ran a ground to the engine block, and the O2 signal goes to the stock O2 wire.
What turbo size and brand is that ? Since you said in the vid you’re running a different turbo. I have the same kit but for a 1.8L but the turbo that comes with doesn’t spool very well
Dont have this kit but building a similar setup. Curious to what ecu you are running and if it is a completely stock motor. My setup is isr2860, megasquirt pnp and gtr r35 550cc injectors im super pumped to get it running but also worried at the sametime any feed back is appreciated!
It's E36 all day, I love a Miata but they just have too much chassis grip. At the end of the day an E36 wants to drift and Miata you have to force to be a second best.
Just found this video because I've been seriously contemplating this kit for the longest time. One question I do have is did you get different lines and fittings? I saw that the fitting for the oil pan needs to be done by dropping the oil pan (Donut Media). I wanted to see if that could be avoided. Also what different turbo are you running?
Hey dude - did you get it dyno tuned? can you share the dyno sheet? I'm considering getting one vs. a kswap, but wanted to compare mid range torque for the fun of daily driving...
Hey man I’m really happy you made this video cause I’m looking to get this kit for my 1.6. I have a few questions about it. What turbo did you put on it? Does it fit with all the A/C stuff? And do you have injectors?
I'm glad to hear that! As for your questions, it has a t04e with a .60 turbine housing (I'd recommend searching for the .48 version though) and I'm not sure about A/C because my car never had it (I'm not sure how it's laid out in a Miata). The car also has 420cc yellow RX8 injectors, which are cheap and one of the most popular options.
So how does the downpipe fit as far as clearance with the little shelf under the break booster? Or did you have to cut off the half inch there is on the edge before the bulkhead underneath it?
It clears perfectly, so there's no need for any cutting. It also has a flex joint in it which helps line everything up and prevent stress cracks. I hope this helps.
Is that turbo the ole Turbone? 😂 my buddy runs one on his e30. And I was thinking about getting one for my 318ti as I’m going to be turbocharging it around spring time. Spooling at 4K is very impressive for the little 1.6!
Hey what kinda ecu are you using, I would like to see more about how the car has been turbo’d and what kinda power the car is making, also has anything been done to the motor, is it completely stock or at least studs and a good head gasket?
I'm running a DIYPNP2 I built, and the engine is completely stock. I plan on making more content about the specifics and progress of everything as I mess with it. Thanks for the video. Definitely looking into this kit. What do you think is a realistic budget to have for turboing a completely stock miata , (including whatever supporting mods you think are necessary such as the radiator). Thanks!
Long time no replies might not help anymore but honest to God you're looking at anywhere from 4-6k on the reasonable end. Depends on what kit you go with, what supporting mods you choose etc. But that's about what you're looking at. Keep in mind you'll need a better clutch, radiator, standalone ECU, a tune, heat wrap if you're gonna do it right, factor in labor cost if you're not gonna do it yourself, things of that nature. If you're not already on a wheel and tire you're REALLY gonna need that too. I'm on 225s rn no turbo and I will be going to at least a 245 before I turbo my car. (Running 15x9s no spacers, rolled fenders if that helps). Maybe go to 16s and do spacers or something of the nature for tire availability and options.
It's completely stock, the only thing I really plan on doing is pulling the head for a refresh. I'm going to just throw in a new oem headgasket, lifters, and valve seals.
