Joost Klein dedicated this song to his father, who died when he was 12 years old due to cancer. His dad taught him that the world has no actual boundaries. His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision. He has gone through so many challenges in life, and it is a true inspiration to see how he deals with them.

@@annia2960 Yes, he wasn't making fun of cowboys. The reason why everything is cartoonish is because he sees the world through the eyes of a child. Notice how he becomes a cowboy in the video game he is holding when he was little...He was still a child when he lost his parents and he wants to travel to see the world, have fun, and forget all that pain. Joost is very clever actually. He combines many artistic elements with the costumes, the beat, the backgrounds, his mix of 80s and 90s vibes, and the powerful message in the end that applies to everyone regardless of background and culture.

The story (briefly) is: his parents died when he was 12-13. His father always said: the world has no borders. So he said: then I want to be at the Eurovision Song Contest one day. After the death of his parents, he started searching for the meaning of life (and relief of his pain) by traveling, but never actually found it there. He gave people money (psychologists?) to help him, but it didn't work. Until he realized that he still had time and therefore still had options to realize his dreams. After all, the world has no borders right? And so he did. The burning house represents losing but also moving on, in a positive way. Burning your bridges: no longer controlled by pain and sadness, but focused on your dreams. Without limitations/borders.

Stole the meaning of this song from another dutchee but:
Eurovision is an emotional affair for Joost. As a child, he watched it together with his parents. "Parents, one day I'm going to be on Eurovision stage" and he made it. Unfortunately, his parents died when he was a child. This song is dedicated to his late father. That's why it's called EUROPAPA. The part in the song “I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone. I'm in Italy, but I still feel the pain, etc.", I feel it's directed at his parents... Joost loved his parents and still does. His lyrics are mostly very deep, but the melody is happy, danceable and the clips of his song are presented in a fun way. Joost himself said that his musical style is diverse. When Joost was asked what song they should listen to in order to understand you. He answered Florida 2009 (it's about his parents) and Wachtmuziek (it's about mental health). I recommend listening to them. You have to translate it, because he sings in Dutch.

The song is a tribute to his parents who both died at a young age. The lyrics are about living life as an orphan, which Joost is himself. That’s why he says ‘Euro-papa’, ‘being alone in Germany’ and ‘Papaoutai’ (dad where are u?) and ends with this sad ending. His dad told him that there are no boundaries in the world, both in personal achievements and between countries.

If you really listen to the lyrics, it is clearly an ode to his parents who passed away when he was a child and talking about him running away from his pain without success. Europapa means 'Euro daddy' of course, but also:
'fortunately I don't need a visa to be with you'
    'I've lost everything except time'
'I'm in Germany but I'm so alone' (in German)
'I'm in Italy but it still hurts'
'I'm running from myself, crying for help all day long. I even give money to people but there is no one to help me'
'Turn on the radio, hear Stromae with Papaoutai ( which means Daddy, where are you? in French)
'My father once told me: it is a world without borders. I miss you every day is what I secretly whisper. See, dad, I listened to you'
So basically: wherever he goes, the sadness goes with him. And then that burning house at the end symbolizes the message to oneself of having to let go of that sadness and old memories in order to move on

  • @weetjijwel050

The end is a bit sad, but can be seen as a reality check. Happy hardcore is meant to go nutts. Empty the brain and let it all out, go mentaI. hope during this song on Eurovision, the world will forget about all problems and go mad completely (in a good way). When the end of the song comes, its back to normal life again with all the problems and sorrows. The day after we can all go back to work. Hardcore never dies, letsgooooo!

at 3.45 that is called "gabber" and then from that happy hardcore - it's the only music cult scene ever that was created in the Netherlands (nike air max - australian training suite - short hair or bald or half bald for the woman)
It's also a dedication to his dad who thought him borders are man made and he can have the whole world. When he was little he said to his parents one day he would be on that stage. His mom and dad did past a way years ago. But now he got this chance it's also an ode to his parents and a goodbye, saying it's time to move on although he will forever love them.

Research: Europapa = Eurodad. 12 points for The Netherlands. An ode to his father who passed away when he was 12 years and his mother who passed away when he was 13 years. His father told him that there are no borders / boundaries, no limits. Go, travel and discover Europe and the world. He promised his father that one day he will be singing at the Eurovision. They used to watch it together when he was a child. Now he made it, because he will be on stage this year.
Everywhere he travelled he carried the pain and grief with him.
The fire simbolise letting go of the pain of no having his parents and the start of a new chapter in his life.

When Joost talked about 'borders' he means limits. So it hasn't to do anything with country borders. Love❤

No, this is wrong. It is about literal borders. His father told him that borders are just imaginary things that are created by people, so people can change the world by imagining it differently. See also his interview by Arjen Lubach.

Such a boring, done before in the nineties thing....seriously wondering why people are so chuffed about it. We raved on this kind of stuff over 30 years ago...you have got to be kidding me...

it is the mix between a happy song and the hit in the stomach at the end, the song is dedicated to his parents who died , his dad died when he was 12 years old and his mother 1 year later. At first I disliked this song but I can not stop to listen to it because I also lost my dad, though I was an adult when he died. This song speaks to many people who lost somebody and know the story behind the song

    UBUNTU 💗
Joost Klein is pronounced as Joast Kline LOL
Dutch is hard to pronounce correctly which is why f.e. Breukelen became Brooklyn.
It is so cute to hear Dutch words being butchered by foreigners LOL
It is not political at all, read what @KopfSchmerz-ww8dm explained to know the backstory.
This is a work of art, there are so many hidden gems in this video this is actually a masterpiece.
I'm Dutch and very proud of Joost!
