The memory must and will remain, but the pain cannot carry on forever (it's an impossible burden). So he used this song to put an end the processing of enduring pain. Fantastic symbolics in here, great artist. And very interesting to see how this 'Dutch phenomenon' also works for people outside the Netherlands. 3 facts: 1. Joost told in an interview that his father passed away when he was just 12 years old. And one year later his mother passed away aswell. 2. He promised his father to perform on the Eurovision Songcontest when he was a kid. 3. The title 'Europapa' had a deeper meaning aswell. Europa means 'Europe' and Papa means 'dad/father'. Just one sentence in this song: 'I lost everything, except time. I'm traveling every day cause the world is mine'.... Meaning: I lost everything what's important to me (his parents) the only thing that remains is the time he needs to fill up. He's running, searching, trying to find something. Every day over and over and again in a world where he feels lonely. All sung and performed in a 'happy hardcore' style. As a contrast, as a mask.
im seeing a lot of covers/ripoffs' but im waiting for an singer song writer version. then the lyrics can come over different. like Coldplay witch did Fight for your righti of the beasty boys
''i lost everything, except time'' is probably a reference to the fact that Europe is almost completely within the same time zone. In the same way that he mentioned the other benefits of the europe like it being virtually borderless.
Joost had already a number one hit in Germany last year. He made a rap- techno- cover song „Friesenjung“ with the German rapper Ski Aggu. It‘s a cover of „Englishman in NY“ that was already covered by the German comedian Otto in the 80‘s. The video is absolutely crazy, too. The end of „Europapa“ ist the typical Dutch techno style „Gabber“ that is also popular in Germany. Because of that I think he gets 12 points from us (Germans). I love the song because of the mix between happy rave style (I like very much) and its deep content (lost his parents, the European unity).
Can you beleive they send him away before the finals because some woman with a camera filmed him backstage, after there was an agreement not to film him? He asked her twice to stop, she didnt and he pushed the phone away (without touching her!), the phone fell and because of this he was disqualified!! Outreagous!! All of his fans around the world are furious because he could have won! It was his biggest wish to perform at the eurovision and make his parents proud. Even though they are gone. So extremely sad... Love your comments on the clip 💙

USian here, we saw what EBU did to Joost and were heartbroken for him. They stole from him a beautiful moment. So upset about the abuse he and other delegations suffered. I used to love streaming ESC but 2024 was an absolute shambles. EBU even tainted Nemo's win. Joost is getting airplay in several states! US social media lifting him up too. 💖

I've become addicted to watching all the video reactions to this song: the smiling, happy faces and people close to tears when finding out about the touching story behind the song. Your reaction is one of the best so far, dank je wel!! 😄
You instantly get this guy dude! Not only his vibe and style, but his story as well! It's not often that i see Dutch artists getting dissected this accurately, you've got a great sharp mind.
The fact that you recognised a lot of the deeper meanings behind the fun before your analysis says ALL about Joost' artisthood. He has thought it through so well!! He is a genius. As someone who disliked this genre back in the nineties, I have such respect for his entry and I absolutely love it!! Joost should win ESC but he has already won in my opinion. I totally agree with you. I hated hardcore when I was a teenager, but Joost gave it new meaning. Now it brings back memories of al those teens in Ausie tracksuits jumping around on the dancefloor
Hahaha, I never hated house, back when I was 13-14, I listened to both black metal and hardcore house! I just wanted the heaviest of them all. I didn’t care about genres. So things like Atari Teenage Riot and The Prodigy were completely my thing. It was to me like a combination of both manual and digital…
Hi , Joost used to watch Eurovision with his parents, and he told his dad one day I’ll will be on that stage, unfortunately he lost his dad when he was 12 due cancer and a year later his mom so he mention them in the end an also reffering his pain , traveling in lots off European country’s , the end he wants to tell his dad , you see dad you told me I can.Accomplish everything I want, now I move on with my life , the music is happy hardcore , it’s so Dutch , you can see DJ Paul Elstak in the car in the clip , so listen again and feel his message please .
That is awesome, and he amde it!! Made it to the grand stage and I think he will be on top of the finals! You know his parents are watching from above. Trust me, I am watching and listening over and over again, especially since I am learning so much more.
This song is so much more than a personal tribute to his father,. It containes an important (polarisation) message to the world......One world, one people..... long way to go. Hope you win Joost Klein, even for trying, love your song, speciaal....Welkom in Europa jonghu...............En dan barst de bom los...dus ......
Great reaction. I usually don’t like this kind of music, but I saw him live at a festival in January and he has an incredible stage presence. Besides being goofy he’s also very smart. He is in control of everything he does and knows very well how to market himself while staying authentic. I’m sure he’s going to surprise everybody with the staging at Eurovision. It’s been his longtime dream to perform at that stage so he will make sure it’s going to be impactful. I even have the feeling he will win! Btw he did post a live performance video yesterday.

Pretty sharp analysis for a first hearing ! The thing with his dad is that both his father and mother died within a year when he was 12. He was left orphan with his then 26 yr old brother ( who is his manager btw). This both scarred and fuelled him. His motto is Joost Klein, Droom Groot (litt. Joost "little', dream big' ). Halfway is the mentioning of belgian singer Stromae song 'Papaoutai' which is a song about an absent father ('papa ou etais ' 'papa where were you' . His father was killed in Rwanda genocide ..😔) . Stromae is da bomb. Every song of him is hearbreakingly good ! th-cam.com/video/oiKj0Z_Xnjc/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=StromaeVEVO

As happy as this song sounds, it's a sad song. Actually, he describes his life in a few minutes; In the first verse, he talks about losing everything. An important part is the death of his parents when he was 12/13 years old. In the second verse, he talks about how alone and lonely he is. He also says that he needed help because of depression and being homeless and apparently insufficiently helped I don't understand the reference to stromai (bad in french). The leonardi da vinci (The Last Supper) scene may refer to one of his songs in which he sings that he is god. If I remember correctly, his father once told him that he should keep writing poetry. The house with the mill is the place in which he grew up (with all the shit) and possibly burning it down, taking a new step into a new world without borders in which he can do whatever he wants
The references in this song is about grief and running away (via the traveling between countries that is shown) from the pain and struggles of passings of his parents (at age 12 and age 13).
I feel like I "should" hate it, but I absolutely LOVE this song! It's an earworm I don't mind having 😁. It reminds me of the songs by "party Piet Pablo" and the likes my kids used to listen too. PS I'm Belgian 🇧🇪
Why do you feel like you “should” you hate it? Omdat we noorderburen zijn of omdat je het niet zo op Europa hebt? Of hou je niet van deze muziek? Ik vroeg het me even af.
Very nice review of Europapa! I’m in love with the great song and I’m 56 years old, apparently I’m too old to like Happy hardcore. Thank you for taking this emotional rollercoaster thank you for your review. Recap you can travel freely in a Europe w/o borders but the pain of the loss of loved ones travels with you. Follow your dreams and make the ones you love proud. Carry the memories with you but also their lessons. Joost is no joke he is a survivor right through the pain to party on the eurovision stage. Joost lost both his parents at a young age that last message "for my parents" punches you in the gut after that wild hardstyle EDM that is typically dutch.
Thank you for the comment and support! I agree, Joost is no joke, and I am a fan. Great song, great message, wonderful person.....I support him dearly.
Thanks for this great video! I'm from the Netherlands but live in Texas and I love to hear American views on Dutch culture. Joost is indeed pronounced more like 'toast' so you'd say 'Joast' maybe.
There's always a national discussion what singer or song to compete at the ESF.. but this one feels so right at the right moment. Joost created a continental anthem for us europeans 😂❤ altough there's very strong competition this year, this song will stick and stand out with a hilarious performance 😅 netherlands, 840 points
Een wereld zonder grenzen is translated to a world without borders and while it is fitting and might mean that it also could mean a world without limit. I think in this context een wereld zonder grenzen means both a world without borders and a world without limits.
Hiii, wonderful reaction sir. 😊❤. You, at the end of the video, got that it was him as a kid (played by a little boy from my city (so proud😊)) and his dad. The whole song got to me so much. Dutch opinion: I love how you mention his expressions, because I was skeptical before watching it the first time. Although he’s big already in several countries, I didn’t know him before. But oh my, his facial expressions are so much fun to watch. On top of that, it’s similar to music from from my teens, so another reason to love it. On top of his background. I really hope they can put together a performance that reflects the energy of his clip.
The best reaction! Thank You! 12 points to The Netherlands. The winner of the Eurovision Songcontest 2024. Nostalgia from the 90's. 9 millions views in 8 days, no1 trending on TH-cam, loved from Asia to South America. No1 on Spotify in many countries. A hit on TikTok. Joost said that he will bring a huge surprise on stage in the finals that will shock the world. This is a masterpiece. Euro papa= Euro dad, because papa is dad in Dutch. A sad song with lyrics with a meaning, with a message, in a happy hardcore melody. A letter to his father who died when he was a 12 year old child. His mother past away a year later. He promised his father that he will be someday on the Eurovision Songcontest stage. His father told him that it is possible because there are no borders between the countries, and no limits to follow his dream. Borders and limitations are made by human. In every country he went, he felt the pain and grief of no having his parents. The fire symbolise letting go of the grief and pain, and the start of a new chapter in his live.
Wow, and Thank You!! This song is getting around for sure! Something to be proud of and I am so excited to see how the live show goes! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! Cheers.
What I really like is the incorporation of a very Dutch dance style 'Hakken' as you see near the end. It's so typically Dutch, I love that it's incorporated in the video.
That's Europe burning... actually. Very deep message, everyth. Old guy lifting weights - well, sort of aging population, hopeless. Everyth Has meaning there... My absolute no ONE ❤ Hug from Poland 🇵🇱
Pretty good pronunciations. Joost is a ghost who eats the most toast on the coast. The EDM is Eurobeat mixed with true old school Dutch happy hardcore. The later segment is old school Hardcore from around 1994/'95. The dancing to this is called Hakken (back then) and is now more known as Gabber. The song is a tribute to his father and mum who passed away at respectively 12 and 13. The song is about an orhan traveling the continent and beyond to escape from his grief and pain. Yet no matter where he goes the void follows him. The end is a message saying he found the strength of letting go. His fathers words that it is a world without "grenzen" which is a Dutch word that means both borders and boundries. A deep poetic song to happy hardcore beats and a goosebumps inducing conclusion where he delivers the whole context of the song. A brilliant lil masterpiece imo. One of the best Eurovision entries to date. Love from an old school Gabber from The Netherlands ❤🇳🇱

This will be the new standard! AMAZING song.
and it's great. much love from Belgium. 12 punten/douze points. Also kudos to Dane who grasps the song perfectly.
disclaimer: all the references are great but the rhyming thing about Stromae's Papouatai/doet ie goed ej is GENIUS.
Arcade by Duncan Lorance: *COUGH* COUGH*
As long time last place germany i think most of us would definetly be last again if it meant for the 1st place to go to NL
This man immediately understands what the song is about, great. His name is small and his dreams are big!!😁
Thank you!
Edit: it's better to translate as Joost 'little' instead of small.
So sad they (EBU) took his dream and promises away from him 😭😭
Of course his dreams are big. He loves himself like a sociopath always does.
Just one sentence in this song:
'I lost everything, except time.
I don't think so@@heinzfpv4787. This is not just a song about Europe, it's a story of depression, feeling lost and a cry for help.
This is a great review. You understood the meaning of this song, it’s not only funny. A lot of Dutch culture, it’s a big artwork❤
Thank You!!
I heard about that. His story is incredible. Love this song.
woah i didnt know friesenjung was a cover, ill have to listen to the other one. friesenjung is so good
Can you beleive they send him away before the finals because some woman with a camera filmed him backstage, after there was an agreement not to film him? He asked her twice to stop, she didnt and he pushed the phone away (without touching her!), the phone fell and because of this he was disqualified!! Outreagous!! All of his fans around the world are furious because he could have won! It was his biggest wish to perform at the eurovision and make his parents proud. Even though they are gone. So extremely sad...
Love your comments on the clip 💙
That is ridiculous and not a good excuse to kick him out. There were other rules broken by other performers but they did not kicked out. Not ok.
Joost klein is disqualified yesterday for the Europian Songcontest!! It's so sad. We need the american poeple to support him on sociale media😢😢greetings from Belgium Sandra Brouns xx
I just read about that. That is so sad and I still wonder what happened?!
@@ninglorithiel That is great to hear that he is getting airplay. The fans are supporting him through streaming so this is great.
Nobody, Only Joost Klein did it, he is the first person on this planet who did this. EuroVision 2024! 1000 points goes to the Netherlands. We all Love Joost Klein.
Let's hope this investigation clears and he can perform
I've become addicted to watching all the video reactions to this song: the smiling, happy faces and people close to tears when finding out about the touching story behind the song. Your reaction is one of the best so far, dank je wel!! 😄
I've exactly the same 😁

Wow, thank you. I am honored!

Oh, heel herkenbaar. Ben verslaafd aan 't raken!❤ Wat een kanjer, Joost Klein.
You instantly get this guy dude! Not only his vibe and style, but his story as well! It's not often that i see Dutch artists getting dissected this accurately, you've got a great sharp mind.
Thank you so much!! Cheers.
In these days where the youth is being tought life should always be Instagram perfect, he is a pure and refreshing inspiration for them. We need more Joosts in the world!!
Yeah this was brilliant and I love this song and this guy! Sad story but his delivery is amazing. Much respect! We need more Joost, you are right! Cheers.
He nailed it live ❤
Absolutely
Btw he did post a live performance video yesterday.
thank you so much. I think that's why I liked this so much, because of how unique and fun and all the detail. When you know what you're seeing and hearing, it's hard not to love.
The reason it's euro-pa-pa is because 'papa' is dad in Dutch.

Everbody at the 'last supper' table is famous. S10 was NL's entry in 2022. The outfits the musicians have on in front of the windmill, the Dutch flag coloured shirts they wear on scooters... It all hits a ton of marks. DJ Paul Elstak in the car, Max Verstappen... it's a lot for us here in NL!
Yeah I had a feeling there was a lot of little nuances in there, thanks so much for pointing all those out!! The more I learn, the more I love it!
@@DaneBramageROCKS there was also a new kids reference, for the non-dutch: beavis and butthead are thirty years old and live in the Netherlands, then you have an idea...

The hardcore bit is also known as "gabber". As Dutch as stroopwafels.

The dance is called "hakke"

As happy as this song sounds, it's a sad song.
Actually, he describes his life in a few minutes;
In the first verse, he talks about losing everything.

Cheers.

Dutch is a complicated language with words that have no equivalent translation. Gezellig is an example. It means warming cozy atmosphere. Welcoming, friendly and inviting. 😊
One thing many miss is Stomae and Papaoutai. This is French and literally translates to "dad where are you".
The building with windmill is a mashup of build types. Probably a visual representation of childhood memories mixed with the emotional burden.

There is a deeper meaning in his words and I really appreciate it. The end always give me a tear. Thank you for the analysing, very good!
