How to Shoot with a Red Dot Sight - Tips & Tricks

- Aaron and Sawyer revisit the topic of red dot sights on pistols and how to "find the dot" and keep it in the window through strings of fire. Check out our new practice target that we just came out with, designed specifically for practicing shooting with a red dot!

The top row of 2" circles can be used to practice the "80/20 rule" that we discussed. (Draw from the holster quickly and slow down for the last 20% as you acquire the dot and focus it on the target and send one round accurately in the circle. Repeat and gradually try to increase speed to a 90/10 ratio and even a 95/5.)
The second row of 2" circles can be used to practice tracking the dot through strings of fire. This will let you know if you need to work more on grip, recoil management, and cadence. Start slow and make sure you can keep all the shots inside the circle, then move to the next circle and pick up the cadence a little bit, keep tracking the dot and be accurate. Increase the speed and cadence until you notice you can't keep your rounds in the circle.
The bottom 2 rectangles (3"x5") can be used to "put it all together." From the draw, fire anywhere from 3-6 rounds accurately within the rectangle, keeping in mind all that we've worked on up to this point such as the "80/20 rule," seeing the dot drop in from 12 o'clock, cadence, etc. If successful, try to increase speed and cadence in the second rectangle.
Keep in mind these are just suggestions and things that we have found to help us, personally. None of this is new or original, simply just points that we have learned from instructors like Donovan Moore, Scott Jedlinski, Ernest Langdon, and others!

These tier 1 guys are showing the reason that red dots suck for most apps. Get use to it playing around and then go to irons for fighting and you're gonna wish you never used em. They make little sense.
@@JackBurton7130 I regret not going to red dots years ago on my pistols I am much faster from target to target and my accuracy has improved exponentially.
For me the biggest thing is really Focus on the target, letting the dot come in to picture naturally. If I find myself looking for the dot I don’t find it as fast.

My son sent me this video as soon as Aaron said right handed with left eye dominant. Most people have said CHANGE over to your right eye. I don't have the BUDGET to fix 50 plus years of eye coordination. I will be following your channel.

So you're instructor. What part did you gain from this that you weren't already teaching? In very curious.
@@JackBurton7130 I used the way you explain "consistent presentation" to give a different way to deliver the information on how I was taught presentation. I have learned they way I learned things don't always work for others. As an instructor I am always looking for different ways to explain the same fundamentals. I also incorporated shot timers to show students real data on progression.
This is a great video. After coming back to a red dot for the second time due to my aging eyes, the thing I found that helped me is when I figured out to stop ducking my head to the gun as it comes up. I have no issues finding the dot when I keep my head up and just bring the gun into my eyesight.
This video has been my lightbulb moment. Thank you guys so much for bringing all these tips and techniques into one video. I was dipping my head down to find the dot, bringing the gun and dot up to my eye level has fixed a lot of hunting for the dot. Also, having the muzzle aimed a little bit high and lowering the dot to the target has fixed SO MUCH! Thank you guys!!!

I’ve taken both the MSP and Sig Sauer instructor level classes, and been able to glean a ton of info from both to instruct my students. Your video reinforces what Scott teaches, upright posture, neutral head position.
On finding the dot, I find using the front sight very time consuming and confusing. What Justin Christopher suggested was, since we are mostly used to riding the front site until the rear comes up, treat the object you are aiming at, through the window, as your front site and as the pistol levels off, the red dot will appear. That resonated with me and helped, immensely.

Finally found what I was looking for ! Left eye dominant and right handed shooting and wasn’t sure if I’m doing it right or wrong
The easiest way for me to find the dot is ALWAYS target focus and ise that as your fr6int sight...and your rear sight is the dot as you bring it up level with your eyes both open.
It didnt take long doing it that way for me.

I think for some people finding the right spot on their prescription lenses can cause the head dropping. Some shooters have a “reading” or “sight” line at the top of the lens rather than the bottom, so the tendency to drop the chin is something they trained to do. My close vision is at the bottom, so that actually encourages me to keep my head back. I realize that once you adapt to the red dot, your main vision is on the target and so you don’t need the close up prescription.

I love your content. It’s really great. Thx u. Call me old school, but I prefer iron sights. Less gaff, less to worry about. I wonder if there have been studies on accuracy of red dot vs. iron sights?
Generally, using a red dot is faster getting off your shot. Another benefit is as the aging process comes into play and nearsightedness gets fuzzy, lining up sites quickly, becomes a challenge. The red dot excels here.

Im cross eye dominant also, but for archery i staeted shooting left handed and the helped. So started shooting guns left handed
Years later ive notice for precision left hand is the way to go right hand I can go for much faster but as always precise

It really just comes down to practice, like anything. Do a thousand sliw draws to get your grip and presentation mechanics down, then start to increase speed.

I'm about to buy my first pistol. If it makes any difference, I'm looking at the M&P 2.0 9mm compact that is optics ready with suppressor hight iron sights. I don't want to be one of those "tactical geeks" but I am thinking I should equip the pistol as I will shoot it. I'm also an older dude in my middle 60s that wears glasses for near vision. Does it make sense to go straight to red dots?
I don't think it would hurt! It's up to you though.

I have the MECANIK Optic on my Canik TP9 SA. The rear sight had to be removed. Dot does not co witness. Kinda of difficult finding that dot.

I use a Zen technique, where I practice drawing and shooting with my eyes closed. Start at 2 yards, then 3, 4, 5 etc. In pursuit of safety, I avoid doing this at public ranges…
Any tips on training out the micro movements when presenting the pistol?
Practice. Lots of reps focusing on efficiency. You'll never be able to hold the gun or dot perfectly still but you can learn to predict its movement very well.

Have you seen the Tier 1 msp (modern samurai project) holster? The retention is based off the light and will fit multiple handguns. They have one for modlite.

I found that I was hesitating on the front sight when waiting for the red dot to drop in from 12 o'clock so I removed the front sight and for me this works much better. I just could not not see the front sight.

Depends on your eyesight and preferences really. A lot of us like the 1moa or 2.5moa dots

No specifically, most of us prefer the SRO for the bigger window and clearer glass. RMR is still a great option though
How do you keep the red dot from jumping around like a bee? In other words, how do you steady the red dot once it’s on target?
there will always be movement there, nobody can hold it perfectly still. its about predictability and eliminating MOST of the movement

We call it " wobble area" took me years to accept the " wobble area" . As the gentleman said above it will never be totally still. Your trigger control plays the major role in reducing " wobble area"
Dry Firing has always helped me master my trigger.

It's up to you! 5-7 yards is usually a good range to start with
