The Komagata Maru incident is a significant event in Canadian and Indian history that took place in 1914. It involved a Japanese steamship named Komagata Maru, which sailed from Hong Kong to Vancouver, British Columbia, carrying 376 passengers from British India, mostly Sikhs, with a few Muslims and Hindus. The passengers were seeking to immigrate to Canada, but upon arrival, they were denied entry due to restrictive immigration policies.
The Komagata Maru departed from Hong Kong on April 4, 1914, stopping in Shanghai, China, and Yokohama, Japan, before reaching Vancouver on May 23, 1914. The passengers intended to challenge the Continuous Journey Regulation, which required immigrants to come to Canada directly from their country of origin on a single, continuous journey-a regulation that effectively barred Indian immigrants, as there were no direct steamship routes from India to Canada.
The Komagata Maru incident is remembered as a symbol of the struggle against colonial and racial discrimination. It has been commemorated in various ways, including memorials, educational programs, and apologies from the Canadian government. In 2008, Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a formal apology for the incident.
May 18, 2016 Ottawa, Ontario The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today delivered a formal statement of apology in the House of Commons for the Komagata Maru incident.
