- In 1989 Toaplan converted to the Megadrive their shooting game, and added a anime cut scene intro. It was later released in the west, however, the staff member who translated the intro wasn't very versed in the English language... and so, many years later was born one of the biggest Internet memes ever: All Your Base Are Belong To Us! There are still some people out there who don't know that its from a Megadrive game!
Just a friendly reminder that we are only 79 years away from this game's setting. All our base will soon belong to them.

The bombastic bad translation work because it legitimately better suited for the opening.

...I just looked up full-game playthroughs of both the Genesis/Megadrive version and the Arcade version of Zero Wing, skimmed the videos, but couldn't find any of the "top down" segments. _(While Mii Force switches from side-scroller to vertical as early as the middle of the second level...)_

The proper translation didn't work for this reason. OG Japanese script was somber and desperate, as if the federation is letting the last breath out in the face of destruction. The Engrish instead went full ham showing that CATS ain't shit.

The best part about this intro is that they’re on the brink of destruction and then the ‘zigs’ canonically destroy the entirety of a much more powerful force. The captain’s the best tactician of the 2100’s, hands down.
My girlfriend named our ferrets Cats and Captain after this, and it hit me when I watched this again, Dook in peace Team Veasel.

The developer name Toaplan makes me smile because in Swedish: Toa = shortened form of toalett = toilet and plan = shortened form of flygplan = airplane/aeroplane. So Toaplan ~= Toilet Plane. :P ...probably not something they were aware of when they named themselves though. Also I now can't stop picturing a plane with a giant toilet on the roof, lol.

As it turns out, I didn't think of the fact "toaplan" can in fact also be read as toa = toilet + plan = plan (as in e.g. "I've got a plan") in Swedish, as a Toaplan/Zero Wing fansite said, and apparently that's Swedish slang for a plan that was thrown together quickly, e.g. while on the can. I still think my interpretation is funnier though.

He was probably a genius and didn't even realize it. I heard the translation work was done by one lone guy who took English lessons at night classes.

I knew about "all your base" for years before I watched this intro and for all those years I just thought it was one bad line from some game. Then I watched the intro and was blown away by the fact that every single line is in broken English.
This intro is pretty epic if you look past the hilarious dialogue. If it wasn’t broken it would be remembered a completely different way

Most versions end right after 'make your time'. I'm so happy you posted the full intro. My favorite line is 'for great justice', and it's good to see it given the credit it deserves.

Anyone got any gameplay footage? I'd like to see the game, itself. I know it was a side-scrolling shooter, but that's about it. And 16-bit side-scrolling shooters were a dime a dozen. Couldn't swing a dead beaver without hitting one. Loved R-Type and EDF, myself.

Z.I.G. is an acronym for some kind of space craft. when the game actually starts up, you exit the ship that the Captain was on and it blows to bits. you then set out to destroy the forces that caused your ship to blow up. so what the Captain was trying to say was "All Z.I.G.'s must take off." or something to that effect.
