Portuguese Sweet Bread Easter Folaro

  • PORTUGUESE SWEET BREAD (EASTER FOLAROS )
    5 lbs of all purpose flour (Five Roses )
    15 whole eggs
    4 cups sugar
    2 tbsp lemon zest
    2 tbsp lemon extract
    2 tbsp yeast
    4 cups warm milk
    1 ½ cups melted butter
    2 tbsp Crisco
    1 ½ tbsp salt
    Hard boil eggs. At your discretion
    2 eggs (egg wash )
    Step 1: Into a small bowl, add ½ cup warm water, 2 tbsp yeast,2 tbsp four, 1 tbsp sugar and mix well. In the mixer, add eggs,sugar, lemon zest and lemon extract. Mix everything for 5 minutes.
    Step 2: In a large bowl, add flour, salt, warm milk, melted butter and yeast. Mix everything until the dough leaves the bowl clean.
    Step 3:Cover bowl, let rest for 15 minutes and give some flips. After another 15 minutes give one more time flips. Let the dough rest until the pan doubles in size.
    Step 4: Grease your forms and put aside. Turn the oven to 400 degrees. Wet your hands in water and grab a piece of dough. Shape into a ball to the size of your baking pans. After all the dough is divided between the pans, add hard boil eggs by inserting them in the middle of the pan. Cover dough and let rest for 30 minutes. Beat the two eggs adding 1 tbsp water and brush over the dough before placing in the oven. Turn the oven to 375 degrees and bake bread for about 40 minutes. Cover with foil if it is getting too much color.
    PÃO DOCE PORTUGUÊS (PÁSCOA FOLAROS)

    2 colheres de sopa de extrato de limão
    2 colheres de sopa de fermento

    1 ½ colher de sopa de sal
    Ovos cozidos. Na sua discrição
    2 ovos (lavagem de ovo)
    Passo 1: Em uma tigela pequena, adicione ½ xícara de água morna, 2 colheres de sopa de fermento, 2 colheres de sopa de quatro, 1 colher de sopa de açúcar e misture bem. Na batedeira, coloque os ovos, o açúcar, as raspas de limão e o extrato de limão. Misture tudo por 5 minutos.
    Etapa 2: em uma tigela grande, adicione a farinha, o sal, o leite morno, a manteiga derretida e o fermento. Misture tudo até que a massa saia da tigela limpa.
    Passo 3: Tampe a tigela, deixe descansar por 15 minutos e dê algumas viradas. Depois de mais 15 minutos, dê mais uma virada de tempo. Deixe a massa descansar até que a forma dobre de tamanho.
    Etapa 4: Unte seus formulários e reserve. Ligue o forno a 400 graus. Molhe as mãos na água e pegue um pedaço de massa. Faça uma bola do tamanho de suas assadeiras. Depois que toda a massa estiver dividida entre as forminhas, acrescente os ovos para ferver, inserindo-os no meio da panela. Cubra a massa e deixe descansar por 30 minutos. Bata os dois ovos adicionando 1 colher de sopa de água e pincele a massa antes de levar ao forno. Ligue o forno a 375 graus e leve ao forno o pão por cerca de 40 minutos. Cubra com papel alumínio se estiver ficando muito colorido.

    Lol... here in Toronto Ontario 5-Roses flower RULES....to this day, I get told 'if there is no "Rosa flour" do not bring that other garbage or do not bring anything "...🤣🤣😍😂😂😂😂🙂
    Its its like the Rose tea🍵🍵☕, its that or nothing...!
    The other one,that has to be, is "Unico oil".
    Got to love our Portuguese🇵🇹 uniqueness🤗🙂😎

    Great job Angela 👍🏼I just made some too 😀 I made 5lbs last week and 5lbs this past Saturday 😬 we are 8 kids so I wanted to give to all my brothers and sisters like my Mom use to 😊 she passed away last year so I made it in her memory 😢I made a folar for my netinho; he’s only 8 months but I wanted to keep the tradition. Oh and I still use the lemon in the cachaça, I actually still have the jar from my Mom😊😢 I love keeping our Portuguese traditions going 😊👍🏼🇵🇹

    I always have 5 Roses flour in the house. It is my go to flour for things like sweet bread and any cakes that do not require cake flour. I like either that or King Arthur. I honestly think that it makes a difference in the final product. I will be making sweet bread this week but only half of what you make. I keep one loaf for us and give the rest away. My recipe is pretty much the same as yours except I do not use lemon. My mom never used it. I proof mine in the electric oven. I turn on the light and it warms it up slightly.

    My moms recipe is the same The only difference is we add liquor to it. My mom always used both five roses or Robin Hood flour and it could not be old. Mine always turns out light and fluffy. Thanks for showing your method.

    Angela, I had to laugh when I heard you say that everyone is talking about Five Roses flour. I had no idea that people were talking about it. It was my mother's favourite (here in Canada). I remember her sending me to buy it and she would say, only get the Five Roses if they don't have it get the Robin Hood. I too use Five Roses, she always said that it was the whitest and lightest flour she has ever used. Anyway, as always thank you for the great recipe and the memories that come with it. I will be making it this week too for Easter. I want to wish you and your family a Blessed and Happy Easter.🙏😊

    Great recipe. I have been wanting to make sweetbread for so long. Use to get it from Cornerstone Bakery in Fall River MA. Now that I moved I can't find good sweatbread and to have it shipped costs a fortune. I attempted one recipe and totally left out the sugar. What a disaster. All those ingredients. I will try again, will not give up. Could you tell me where you got your pans? I have smaller cake pans and I don't think they will work. Thanks

      I have use any kind of flour and had results with any of them. But King Arthur is what I would recommend because we do have it around here.

    Hi Angela I made the Massa but first I would like to share my experience with everyone I went to the store to purchase the five roses flour but I went to Walmart they didn’t have it was poring rain I didn’t feel like driving to the other stores so came home use the flour I had which was Robin Hood flour I googled the conversion in to cups well instead of pounds I did kilograms therefore the conversion was 40 cups of flour as I was mixing the flour with the wet ingredients my husband walks in and ask me what r you making I said I’m trying to bake some Massa but I’m having a problem Angela didn’t have this problem she did with one hand well he looks at the recipe and said Wanda it’s not klg it’s pounds I was ready to throw everything out but he said Wanda just add more wet ingredients & yeast we did it came out pretty good I shared with my daughter her in-laws my nineteen year old grandson took one to share with friends my Canadians neighbors loved it !!! Now have a good laugh everyone 😊 thanks again Angela for you delicious recipes ❤️

      OMG Wanda I am sorry you had to experience this mishap. It happens to all of us. I am glad you listen to your husband but that how we learn from ours mistakes. 40 cups is about 10 lbs of flour if you double everything you would been fine. Now you know you can handle a big batch.       I tried different flours and I came to conclusion it made no difference. I would use a bread flour instead of just all purpose flour. Thank you for watching my videos.

    Will cutting the recipe in half be okay. I just made a different recipe and my dough didn't rise. Yeast was bubbly so I don't know what happened.

      Make sure the yeast is good. Also don’t use hot milk it will kill the yeast.

      @kathycadile6421 did you put the right amount of sugar if it has to much sugar it weight down on the doughy and it won’t rise. I have had that happen to me too. Just don’t give up keep trying with different flours.

      @kathycadile6421 also keep the dough in warm place and leave it longer to rise. If it is cold it takes double the amount of time. I remember my mom putting the dough at the end of her bed because it was to cold.
