Richard is a real honest to goodness basso profundo. You can hear it in his resonance and how he absolutely hits the low notes comfortably without straining like the others you mentioned.
Richard Sterban is the bass singer. He said he sang in chorus in high school and left 10th grade as a soprano and came back in the fall as a bass. LOL!
"Hi Ho Silver, away", for you younger folks, was the famous phrase in the opening scene of the Lone Ranger TV western in the '50's with the Lone Ranger (Clayton Moore) rearing up on his white horse "Silver". It became a classic scene and phrase.
My son was 3or 4 when this song came out. He knew it from beginning to end in no time. He sang it from the top of his lungs all day long. Now he has a son the same age. My son gets embarrassed when I talk about it. So I think it's time to teach my Grandson this song 😏
My son who is now 42 and getting married in just a few days; use to love to sing this song when he was about 4 years old. Especially, the hook. It was adorable. I think I am going to play it for him at his wedding. Thanks for the memories!!
Tammy here - They came to my high school in the early 1970s and the concert was only 25 CENTS to attend. I was not a country music fan in those days (early teens, as my school was junior high and high school -6th-12th grades) so I didn’t attend! Duh! If I had only realized how famous they would become!!
To put the names with the faces, look at the pic @4:51. From left to right are: Duane Allen (lead singer), Joe Bonsall (tenor), Richard Sterban (bass), and William Lee Golden (baritone). Edit: If I’m not mistaken, I believe Joe sings the lead on this song
Richard Sterban (bass singer) was a member of J. D. Sumner and The Stamps Quartet from 1970-1973. The quartet opened for or sang as backup to Elvis Presley from 1971-1977. The quartet sang gospel and Elvis loved gospel music. There used to be a video showing Richard and other band members singing gospel music with Elvis. Loved your reaction❤ Thank you!
One thing I truly appreciate about bassist Richard Sterban's vocal quality and that is; his chest resonance, strength & power. He might not have used his lowest recordable note of 1Eb very often, but he showcased often enough his "considerable" range and talent....to THIS DAY !! (listening to 2021\CountryRebel). I've never heard him miss a pitch, no matter what the circumstances were. Sadly he his the only living, old fashioned gospel bass singer left. I my book...
Anyone else not heard this song in over 20 years and still sang every word, note and Bow Wow?!! Just me? Excuse me while I add this to my "My Music" folder. THANK YOU for reminding me about this song that my Mom used to blast on our huge speakers on Saturday mornings while cleaning the house. ♥
I don't listen to country music these days, but I grew up with these guys. Saw them in concert a couple of times and met them in person. This song takes me back to my childhood for sure. The bass singer is Richard Sterban. Listen to Dream On. You will enjoy that one.
I was pregnant with my youngest in 1981 when this was popular. I was sure he would be born knowing it. Alas, he wasn't. This is so much better than any new collaboration with Home Free.
The original was written and performed by Dallas Frazier in 1966. The Oak Ridge Boys 1981 cover is the most known version and has become one of their signature songs.
This song came out in 1981 when I was 12 years old and it was a major hit for The Oak Ridge Boys. I grew up listening to this group and I particularly love their earlier songs. My favorite ORB song is "Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight." Love that song!!
My favorite’Oak Ridge Boys’ story is that when former President George H.W. Bush was in hospital dying, they would call into his room and sing to him over the speaker phone. He was a big fan.
What a great reaction. I was 10 years old when this came out and instantly fell in love with it - I am now 50 years old. I will always like the Oak Ridge Boys.
Bass singer Richard Sterbin. He use to sing bass back up for Elvis in his concerts in the early 70s. Living in Nashville, I have run into Richard and talked to him a couple of times. Super nice guy.
I love this version & grew up with Oak Ridge Boys who are named for Oak Ridge, TN about an hour away from where I live, BUT the version with them AND Home Free was absolutely magically! So many talented guys together was simply amazing & so much fun! 😊
Love this! Memories of the light hearted catchy tunes- just so easy to listen too. As a you g tern even my grandma liked them and she pretty much only listened to gispel and a few country artists. She tapped slong with this tho- I remember it vividly. 😊
This is a good one. Glad you liked it. Some other greats by them are: • Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight • I Wish You Could Have Turned My Head (and Left My Heart Alone) • You’re the One
Glad you are checking out this great country band. You did the collaboration with Home Free for this song "Elvira". So now you can see how it was originally done. It is done at a slower pace. The Oak Ridge Boys had a lot of hits. Check out their fun song called "Bobbie Sue".
Had to hide my love for this song, while trying to be a cool Hippie. Harmonies to blow your mind. Sung from their boots 👢 👢. Just a laugh waiting for your mind to be blown Craig. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Your wish is my command! Favorites: “Fancy Free”, “It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes”, “It Takes a Little Rain (to Make Love Grow)”. Awesome reaction as always, btw!
Awesome reaction!! I am so glad you loved them! Richard, the Bass, had so much depth and richness in his voice, still does, but it was so much stronger back then.
What a great reaction!! I remember listening to the 78 of this , while laying on the shag carpeting. You should definitely check out The Statler Brothers "Do You Know?", it's very similar!
My favorite by the originals. It certainly took me back to hearing them when they were being played on Country music radio stations. Gosh I miss those times of turning up the music and rolling down the car windows thoroughly enjoying the ride and the music.
Don’t miss the song Bobbie Sue!! It’s a lot of fun to listen to. Joe Bonsall of the group is quite an author and he wrote the story of his father’s troubles with PSTD after a terrible battle in World War II. It’s a good book to readHis mother said oh Joe you’ve written our story I think it’s G.I. Joe and Lily!! He’s LW rotten 4 Other books as well! This is truly a good group of men!! Great reaction
They were at the top here, to bad you couldn't find a tape of it. They did a sensational stage show. Richard Sturbon bass dream love of millions of women.
Try Dream On to hear the bass(Richard Sterban) take the lead. Y'all Come Back Saloon, I'll be true to you, Leaving Louisiana in the broad daylight, trying to love two women, American Made. It's all great.
Bobby Sue, Freckles, the Ya’ll Comeback Saloon, Didn’t She Really Thrill Them Back in 1924. Some of my favorites by them along with this one. I have seen them in concert several times!
American Made would be my suggestion for your next Oak Ridge Boys. Each verse of the song has 4 lines, sung individually, by the 4 members. Then they all sing the chorus together. The Statler Brothers were a similar group. They started their career as the backup singers for Johnny Cash. Their most famous song was Flowers On The Walls. But, my favorite was their remake of Ricky Nelson's Hello Mary Lou.
I love your reaction to this song! I love the Oak Ridge Boys and have for years! THERE are so many great songs, but I am going to recommend Thank God for Kids. ALSO, as a poster below recommended The Statler Brothers, and I second that. They are another amazing group. Oh, and the bass singer for the Oak Ridge Boys is the skinny guy with no facial hair, watch them singing a song as a performance, and you will be doubly impressed. Keep diving into the Country/Folk stuff, and I Will follow you around, with opinions! Keep loving the music!
This song is very special to me. My middle name is Almira after my great grandma. When this song came out everyone I knew would sing Almira instead of Elvira. To this day they still do. I love it❤😂😅😊
I never want to get into a head boppin contest with you. You’d win because I’d come undone with the cutest competitor based on the smile you’d disarm me with that first bop!
The picture at 4:29 shows left to right Richard Sterben (bass) Joe Bonsall (tenor) William Lee Golden (Baritone) and Duane Allen (Lead Vocals). Obviously, the Oom Poppa Oom Poppa Oom Poppa Mow Mow that little kids ran around singing at the top of their lungs back when this song first came out, was performed by Richard Sterben. I am a huge fan of Home Free but I prefer Elvira in this original cut by the Oaks. I think my two favorite songs by the Oak Ridge Boys are "Thank God for Kids" and "Y'all Come Back Saloon". I'd love to see you react to these songs.
Mr Craig, I grew when the Oak Ridge Boys music was everywhere. I still don’t know their names. I think I knew a couple of them, back then. But now, if I can remember my own name, it’s a good day 😁😁
Such a great reaction. I've always loved the Oak Ridge boys. Not to upset any homefree fans but I love the original verse with just the Oak Ridge Boys way better. Check out Bobbie Sue or Fancy free
With you here... Home Free is too... smooth... is the only word I can think. I'm sure most people won't consider the Oak Ridge Boys as edgy, but their voices don't go for "perfect" like Home Free seems to do... so more personality...
You now to check out the Statler Brothers “Class of 57”, or “Pictures”. Also you need to listen to anything by Tom T. Hall and “Lord it’s hard to be humble” by Mac Davis.
I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of this song before, but one you should really check out it’s a very touching song is called the letter by Wayne Newton based off of a letter he read that Elvis wrote near the end of his life
You should check out the Bellamy Brothers. They gained popularity in the 70s and 80s with quite a few hits. If I Said You Have A Beautiful Body, Redneck Girl, Dancing Cowboys, Lovers Live Longer and many more
Joe Bonsall died July 9th 2024 from complications from ALS. He was the tenor with a big mustache. Richard Sturben was the bass and William Lee Golden has the long hair and beard. I can’t remember the 4th member’s name.
Richard is a real honest to goodness basso profundo. You can hear it in his resonance and how he absolutely hits the low notes comfortably without straining like the others you mentioned.

It is...fabulous. This was big, big, big 40 years ago
My son was 3or 4 when this song came out. He knew it from beginning to end in no time. He sang it from the top of his lungs all day long. Now he has a son the same age. My son gets embarrassed when I talk about it. So I think it's time to teach my Grandson this song 😏

YESSSSSSSSSSSS
Love these guys, and that bass voice really made the song

the clean shaven guy is the one with the deep voice
Anyone else not heard this song in over 20 years and still sang every word, note and Bow Wow?!! Just me? Excuse me while I add this to my "My Music" folder. THANK YOU for reminding me about this song that my Mom used to blast on our huge speakers on Saturday mornings while cleaning the house. ♥
Giddy Up... Ooom Pappa Ooom Pappa MowMow. Giddy Up... Ooom Pappa Ooom Pappa MowMow lol 👍✌️🇨🇦

Oak Ridge Boys "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight". Love it!
I don't listen to country music these days, but I grew up with these guys. Saw them in concert a couple of times and met them in person. This song takes me back to my childhood for sure. The bass singer is Richard Sterban. Listen to Dream On. You will enjoy that one.
Every time I hear this I can see my dad dancing and singing it. He did the bass part amazingly
These guys were great. Before the Oak Ridge Boys, there were the Statler Brothers. "Bed of Rose's" is a favorite along with "Flowers on the wall"
Love the Statlers
That's my favorite too! Haven't got it played yet! Flowers!! If we get that one played, it'll be a miracle! lol
I like the Gatin Brothers...Broken Lady!!
@@jewls9697 That's a damn good one, my favorite of theirs👍✌️
He done flowers right after I posted it. Look it up. My favorite too!!
I was pregnant with my youngest in 1981 when this was popular. I was sure he would be born knowing it. Alas, he wasn't. This is so much better than any new collaboration with Home Free.

Have always loved these guys ... Richard Sterban , the bass , also sang with Elvis before he joined the Oaks !
Great reaction! I remember being a small child listening to this with my dad. ❤️

You listen to music the same way I do...with a big daft grin on your face. Good music is so good for the soul...
My favorite’Oak Ridge Boys’ story is that when former President George H.W. Bush was in hospital dying, they would call into his room and sing to him over the speaker phone. He was a big fan.
I still have this song on a 45 record! Still listen to it!❤
What a great reaction. I was 10 years old when this came out and instantly fell in love with it - I am now 50 years old. I will always like the Oak Ridge Boys.

I am not a country fan but this song is incredible!!
Fabulous rendition. These guys are fabulous.
I saw them at The Grand Ol' Opry about five years ago. They still sound amazing! 💗😎
No one else sounds like the Oak Ridge Boys....
The man with the bass voice, Richard Sterban, also used to sing backup for Elvis Presley
This is a good one. Glad you liked it.
Some other greats by them are:
• Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight
• I Wish You Could Have Turned My Head (and Left My Heart Alone)

Great song. Great reaction. Home Free is ok...but The Oak Ridge Boys...come on.🔥🔥
I’m a huge fan of Richard Sternberg. Because I’m an even bigger Elvis fan. Love that he was his bass singer for many years
Had to hide my love for this song, while trying to be a cool Hippie. Harmonies to blow your mind. Sung from their boots 👢 👢. Just a laugh waiting for your mind to be blown Craig. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

That's a superior rabbit hole to jump in. Looking forward more. Thank you!
The one at the end with the long beard and mustache and long hair is my cousin his name is William Lee Golden
What a great reaction!! I remember listening to the 78 of this , while laying on the shag carpeting. You should definitely check out The Statler Brothers "Do You Know?", it's very similar!

A good show case for Richard is also "You're the One", with one of his great scale down (for a lack of a better word, lol). (shiverssss...)
My favorite of theirs is "Setting Fancy Free" !
I love listening to the music I grew up with and seeing ur reactions to them
The Oak Ridge Boys “The Baptism of Jesse Taylor”(Live).
Bobby Sue, Freckles, the Ya’ll Comeback Saloon, Didn’t She Really Thrill Them Back in 1924. Some of my favorites by them along with this one. I have seen them in concert several times!
I used to sing around the house to this and I loved this and the Homefree cover with them - so enjoyed both.
American Made would be my suggestion for your next Oak Ridge Boys. Each verse of the song has 4 lines, sung individually, by the 4 members. Then they all sing the chorus together. These guys were huge back in the day.
American Made is another classic song from the Oak Ridge Boys

They are from about 20 miles from my house (Oak Ridge Tennessee)
Josh Turner’s song “Long Black Train” is also a great one
I love watching your facial expressions. Great videos.
I loved them when I was a kid
This song is very special to me. My middle name is Almira after my great grandma. When this song came out everyone I knew would sing Almira instead of Elvira. To this day they still do. I love it❤😂😅😊
I picked this video to watch because I knew the drop in his voice. So I knew you would react with "ahh-ooo " then a giggle 😂😂
Try the Statler brothers..."flowers on the wall"...
I never want to get into a head boppin contest with you. You’d win because I’d come undone with the cutest competitor based on the smile you’d disarm me with that first bop!

Except Joe is singing lead on this.
And this isn’t the original the original was recorded and released in 1966 by Dallas Frazier who wrote the song.
My Wife's favorite group...and I live close to where The Statler Brothers live in Virginia. Love them both
There's no telling how much money this song made for Dallas Frazier. You should watch Dallas singing this. It's on TH-cam
awesome
Mr Craig, I grew when the Oak Ridge Boys music was everywhere. I still don’t know their names. I think I knew a couple of them, back then. But now, if I can remember my own name, it’s a good day 😁😁
I’d love to see you react to the late Darryl Singletary - I ain’t Never Had Too Much Fun.
Dream On is a song that Richard sings lead on that was a hit for the Righteous Bros in the 60's... Give that one a listen
Such a great reaction. I've always loved the Oak Ridge boys. Not to upset any homefree fans but I love the original verse with just the Oak Ridge Boys way better. Check out Bobbie Sue or Fancy free

Elvira is my favorite song and the y’all come back saloon
Great singers for sure, please do a reaction to " American Made."
If you like the bass voice listen to Dream On by them. Richard took the lead on it.
I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of this song before, but one you should really check out it’s a very touching song is called the letter by Wayne Newton based off of a letter he read that Elvis wrote near the end of his life
Next one for them American Made.
Low voice singer was part of Elvis back up singers.
Still play my "Boys" on the ol scratchy vinyl 😀
You should check out the Bellamy Brothers. They gained popularity in the 70s and 80s with quite a few hits. If I Said You Have A Beautiful Body, Redneck Girl, Dancing Cowboys, Lovers Live Longer and many more
Joe Bonsall died July 9th 2024 from complications from ALS. He was the tenor with a big mustache. Richard Sturben was the bass and William Lee Golden has the long hair and beard. I can’t remember the 4th member’s name.
You should take a look at their gospel songs as well..."Have a Little Talk with Jesus" is one of their best which they still sing today.
Listen to I'll be True to you. One of their best on my opinion.
Richard is an exceptional bass singer
Richard Sterban the bassist is the one that never has any facial hair.
