That was Ray Stevens at his best. He has so many hilarious songs. The man was hilarious. He also sang "straight" songs like "Everything is Beautiful", but he is best known for his hilariously comedic songs. If you need a laugh he's worth listening to.

Many people don't realize that Ray Stevens is a top notch musician and song writer. But like all us southern boys he loves to have fun. I'm small town southern and 70 years old so I can relate to his fun songs. For instance his song "Sitting Up With The Dead". I remember sitting up with the dead. The last time was at my late uncle's home when he passed away in 1967. Love Ray's work.
Ray Steven's loves people like you reacting to his songs. He's contacted some reactors to thank them for keeping his music alive. He's a sweet and talented man.He has other comedy songs such as, The streak, It's me Martha and Sitting up with the dead. He also sings. My favorite is Everything is beautiful. It just makes me feel good. Thank you ❤

@@astralnomadmy grandma’s name was Margaret, so my grandpa used to mimic that goofy voice at random times to mess with her, and usually got threatened with various objects for it (depended on what was in her hands at the time 😂).

Yes, Pascagoula, Mississippi is a real place. I have lived here all of my 70 years. We are on the Gulf of Mexico. As far south in Mississippi as you can go. We loved this when it was released. And we all had an opinion about which church he was pointing to.
I used to visit my great grandmother as a child there in the 90's. I remember her being right on the water. And I remember seeing the big ships they were building. Good times!
I, too, grew up in Pascagoula-Moss Point from '55 to '67. I am now 72 yrs old. I remember a school mate named Daniel Steven's telling me about a flying squirrel getting into a revival service at a church out in the Orange Grove community. Ray adjusted and embellished the story to make a song out of it. BUT, the event actually happened.
He is such a funny man...how he came up with all these crazy songs, he's just a genius!
He's still performing in his theater CABARAY in Nashville, Tennessee. He puts on a great show.

I love this song. Ray Stevens has a lot of hilarious songs. His first big hit was "The streak" you really need to check it out.
I would say that his big hit was either Ahab the Arab or Along Came Jones. Both were released in the early 1960s. My Daddy had an old bank in the shape of a dog that is named Jones after the song.
Most Rays songs are comedic. He’s a riot to listen to. Enjoy as many as you can.

Home Free’s video is a cartoon version and if you watch carefully the guys are drawn sitting in the pews. Many reactors didn’t catch that. They also added little fun lyrics in the song.

@@astralnomad I just watched them and they are way better than Santa is Watching You. Thanks for telling about them. The Annual Christmas Party is like the company I worked for before I retired. People at the corporate office started parting in their offices before the official party began. And I had a few co-workers who said some things they regretted the next day. 😂 Luckily there was a hotel nearby. A lot of people got a room because they were too drunk to drive home.

Ray Stevens is a fantastic piano player, a great writer, and a singer of songs such as Misty and had the first cut of Sunday Morning Coming Down that I heard. A comic genius and an all-around talent and star of Country Music.

The magnificent Mr. Ray Stevens, you really can't go wrong with this man. Although best known for his humourous song (It's Me Again Margaret. I'm My Own Grandpa. Sitting Up With The Dead), the gentleman also has an extensive catalogue of straight and beautiful song (Everything is Beautiful. Misty). Definitely a man worth taking a deeper look and listen to.
The Streak is another funny song by Ray Stevens. He is getting pretty old now, but he does record something occasionally. The first song that I ever heard by him was in the 1960s. It was Ahab the Arab.

I grew up through the 70s listening to Ray Stevens and he had so many funny songs. I think my favorite was the streak but he did have a song that was very beautiful which was called Everything Is Beautiful. This song talks about people of all skin color, races, hair length and it goes on.

The first time I heard Ray was in 1974 with his first major comedy hit song, "The Streak". He has had many, many hits since then and he's had a few regular songs as well. Others of his I'd suggest would be the original version of "The Shriner's Convention", "Harry, The Hairy Ape", "Gitarzan", "Ahab, The Arab", etc.
Many years ago, Johnny Mathis had a hit with a beautiful ballad "Misty". So, shortly after that, Ray Stevens did his own version of the same song. It was upbeat and country, but really good! You should listen to it.

I worked for the feds and was transferred to Texas. This fed from another part of the agency, who was an investigator and hispanic, with a Tex-Mex accent. He would call me up to ask questions about cases he was working on. Everytime I picked up the phone, he would say: 'It's me again Margaret' and do that Ray Stevens' snicker. Always made me laugh, this Tex-Mex accent doing Ray Stevens. Ray Stevens is a true artist!!

So glad you found the lighter side of country! For a speech class my freshman year of high school, we had to do a lip sync, and I chose Ray Stevens' version of "In The Mood", complete with a chicken costume. It was the hit of the class, and lives in the teacher's memory until this day!
