They are lucky to have each other. I tried to restore a 1740 with my 4 young sons. I had learn to get over my fear of electric tools. Now the skill saw is my favorite tool.
His partner is incredibly creative and gifted. Her work is phenomenal.

That outbuilding could be lovely as a wedding reception location. Could be lovely with country/flowers. Storage upstairs for tables, linens (possible catering supplies). Have water, electric hook ups. Put in nice restrooms. I wouldn't use the upstairs as accessable to guests
I wouldn't make it a building exclusively for weddings, but just a venue that people can rent for birthdays, business meetings, functions etc. So that one is not responsible for food and decorations.
Yeah splitting the upstairs for a grooms suite and a bridal suite. Building a bar and food storage downstairs. It would be beautiful

Agree. There is a church. Get married there, your guests walk across the lane and voila....it is a celebration. Business meetings, reunions, training classes of all kinds. Wonderful venue.

I've got an idea. Since you have decided to divide into 3 apartments, you can name them based on the age of the building in which they are located. It would be a nice idea to decorate them according to their age of origin. The apartment which will be in the 17th century part, will be decorated in the style of the 17th century. The same in the 18th and 19th century parts of the building.
What do you think about that?

Can I just say I loved hearing the architect. He brought so much knowledge, not only functional but also historical. He seems excited about the work you guys are doing.
Such a treat to see the old outbuildings! As heirs, cousins, we still keep the old family homestead from the early 18th century in the family. The barn is unsafe and locked but we are reroofing it now. We also have a collapsed building under a linden tree on the other side of the road, away from the main buildings. It was the old stone baking oven. I remember it so well! Once a month my grandmother and aunts would bake many big loafs of sourdough country bread at high temperatures, fueled with wood. Meanwhile several big sheet pans of yeast dough were covered with fresh fruits from the garden, cherries, plums, apples, butter crumble. These went in when the oven had cooled down a bit. In the root cellar under the house, wide planks were tied with rope to the ceiling as storage for the bread and cakes, so rodents couldn’t get to them.
The oven is now gone but the linden tree and memories are still there. Above all you do so carefully and lovingly, the greatest gift to yourself is a lovely family life and precious memories. Your girls are so lucky!

I hope they've gotten to do some exploring around the grounds with a metal detector. I can't even begin to imagine what they'd find.
What a surprise find , there’s a good chance the other hinge is in that pile too . That building will make charming gites .
The hinge is a marvelous find! Perhaps it can simply be used on another door. I’m sure it is still usable considering how things were made. Then it can be enjoyed by all. 🥰 Hugs from the US!
A reliable blacksmith could duplicate that hinge for you exactly as it is.
@@ruthcarter8895 My Danish grandfather was that kind of blacksmith, working about 1875 to 1910. The fancy work, decorative pieces, and reproductions. It is almost impossible to find people who are able to do that today. If you could find someone competent, be sure to document and showcase their work and it's beauty and value.

We removed the concrete and made wood inserts for the rotted away wood. Lime mortar, wood oil, new inserts where needed, new beams too, carpenters for the mending that is really necessary and cleaning the beams with carbon dioxide, great tip, and so relatively fast and non harming to the wood. I wonder if you have reclaim yards for flooring, doors, windows. It is lovely and will be beautiful when rescued!!!! Good luck!!!

He befriended a French,family.We remain
friends for many years.I remember visiting Thier lovely timbered house.
He had a lovely time thier.So I'm fond of the area.
I love the aerial shots of the two outbuildings. With the drone you can see the vegetation growing out of their roofs. The buildings are amazing. X
Beautiful! I think if you make three apartments, you should have interior doors that connect them that can be locked (like in hotels that have two rooms with an ajoining door if there are families.) That way if a large family or a company does rent the whole building for reunions or retreats or whatever, they can choose to open the doors and connect the three units.
The best time to look for the building site in the weeds is after a hard frost.

The long outbuilding has so many possibilities. And the flooring looks great.
All that underbrush hiding a potential trove of more treasures in the collapsed building...don't you need a donkey to clear it? Love that you're able to begin work on the outbuildings since they are so vulnerable. Chilling that only 10 years ago that lost building was still standing.

External timber on outbuildings painted with a protective mix of ox blood and lime. Never met an ox with green blood and would not fancy mixing ox bile with lime to give your Normandie green. Bon courage from somebody who travelled the same adventure 30 years ago with two young daughters in a Cistercien abbaye in the Limousin.

What a great find when you guys went exploring… Not only to find the walls of the outbuilding and then defined the building itself but also to find that piece of original ironwork to your door that matches what’s in the house. You should just slightly clean it up but not much so you don’t takeoff the original look and maybe shadowbox it if you don’t end up using it anywhere so you can have a historical comment somewhere in the house. I know I would appreciate seeing that and knowing the history in the age of it and the story behind it. Like they do in museums. It is so amazing. You could even hang it out in that lovely hallway.

Was Fired for being overzealous with the chemo medication. She didn’t stop when she was supposed to and she thought she knew more than everybody else and consequently many of her patients are paying a result all these years later. It is affecting my heart to where I cannot have heart surgery and I suffer with edema issues which make me look like I’m 11 months pregnant from one day to the next and because of my heart it is hard to walk in breeze and sometimes sit and breeze and talk. I tell you this not to feel sorry for me but because I want you to know the
JOY YOUR VIDEOS HAVE BROUGHT INTO MY LIFE…. I’ve mentioned before that I even architect draftsperson and a Licensed Interior Designer &Artist after going to college three different times. The most recent time I was diagnosed with my cancer 2 weeks after graduation & going thru a terrible divorce from an abusive person who my doctors would not let me out of the hospital until he was out of the house. For years I said he saved my life but the truth is he saved my life in two ways: he helped me to fight back physically as I had not been able to do that until that point and secondly he gave me the courage to believe in myself and go back to college at the age of 47 and start a new career and dreams of a new Life.
No my dream through your videos I didn’t joy the beautiful work you were doing on your château and outbuildings and the yard. Up until two years ago I had gotten well enough to do landscaping and I was doing architectural gardening and landscaping for a large complex with a three-year plan and then my heart got too sick… again back to watching your videos another’s and painting and writing and making cards whenever I have a chance. I am grateful for my life and I’m grateful for people like you who share your life and your videos for all of us to see. God bless you and thank you for the joy you bring my life❣️❣️❣️❣️

I love that you are looking to preserve the outbuildings. I remember watching a TH-cam “Incredible Tiny Homes” and he put thatched roof on several homes to make them look like a Snow White House. The artificial thatch had been used in a Caribbean resort for many years, I believe, with great success and longevity. I don’t know if you want to check on this for those buildings or not but Randy Jones is the person who built those wonderful little homes and used the artificial thatch.
thatch is actualy one of the most iconic feature of normandy houses. It's pretty common down there.
I doubt that artificial thatch would be permitted on an historic building.

Maybe 2/3 for your dwelling. I third for two bedroom guesthouse. Workers cottage. The chatue for guests. It would be like going to work every day. Important to seperate work from family with the girls growing up aswell. The rising and setting sun so important and so beautiful.

Just a couple of suggestions... please get some PEACOCKS to roam the lovely grounds, annnd... try an industrial METAL DETECTOR by all means. Who knows what treasures are hidden there from centuries past darlings... every chateau restoration should have one of these! 🍀✨🍀

Truly AMAZING to find that original hinge! I know it's a lot of work, but I would replace it on the original door. And for the last hinge that doesn't match, I would have a different blacksmith make a hinge that perfectly matches the old hinges.

Should you find the second door hinge, I think you absolutely should put them both back on. It's where they belong. Who knows how long they have been on there and how long they have been missing. Maybe not right away. But at one point all the large projects on the Chateau grounds will be done and I think that would be a nice finishing touch for when that time comes.

I've done a lot of renovations in my day, you guys didn't do a bad job at all. If you're interested in a new challenge buy an old plantation in Lousisiana, USA. You'd love it. Imagine French cooking with a spicy seafood flair.

How exciting for you both to be starting a new project with the outbuildings. What an amazing discovery finding the remnants of an old building and finding the hinges to the back doors to the Chateau. That's history in that piece alone. Who knows what else you will uncover when you clear the area where you found the hinge!! You should preserve that hinge or frame it and hang it near that door as a reminder of what once was!! xx

Those outbuildings are such a wonderful resource! I have a homestead in the US that had three outbuildings and one large barn. We are renovating the barn as an entertainment venue, and it's also where my office currently is. The other buildings are more, shall we say, rustic, and support the homestead activities: One is a brooder and storage for our birds and the other is a garden shed that houses our tractor, potting shed, and other bits for the gardens.

Didn’t realise how big it was until you walked out the door wow ! Ps. I would put in underfloor heating then your feet will be toasty warm. Rather than radiators which results in having to heat the ceilings before the warmth hits you plus the slight;y warmer blood in your feet acts as radiator fluid inside your body and warms you from the inside.

Lovely find! You guys should look into 3D laser scanning!! Much more accurate for measurements and create as built conditions. Its very popular for heritage buildings. Could even commission a universities laser scanning research teams local in france to help out!

The subtle jokes are lovely. Always wanted to do the same, discover a neglected estate and bring it back to life. Too distracted by mundane stuff to take the plunge. (Restoring two Austin Healey Sprites, raising 4 kids, pets, home maintenance, work, yawn) someday though. I'll settle with watching your videos. If you offered an apartment for rent to tourists, I would absolutely rent one when we visit next spring.

An interesting thing I wanted to note about the red paint on the beams. Historically, red paint was used often because the ferrous oxide used to get the red pigmentation actually has preservative properties and inhibits the growth of fungus, mold and moss that lead to rot. This is partially why you see so many red painted buildings in Sweden and Scandinavia or on barns. Obviously, I support you painting the beams whichever color you like, but I just thought it was interesting considering all of the ways, some successful and some not, it seems that people have tried to preserve the building.

Love the out buildings too. As to the one building totally in the ground in the field where your happy Bull is. I think that old piece of metal just might be an canon. I remember seeing the likes of them in Quebec Canada at the various forts we visited with my father in our teens.
