Remember that those larger trees can be milled and used for some of your renovations coming up like the two out buildings. This will save you some money for lumber and you will be able to reuse those trees with a new story. I bet there,s a lot of good lumber there. I think I heard hickory, walnut, etc. They don’t have to leave the property.

it costs money to do that by the way. And that also takes much time. Those trees need to dry out and age before milling in most cases. But good idea.

    • @florentinalily
      @florentinalily 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@InsideKarensHead yep. We did the figures for milling or buying off the shelf/ from a scierie as opposed to paying our tree surgeon to mill. Timber is so expensive; it was much cheaper for us to pay him to Mill the timber (fresh incidentally) for the floorboards and joists in our barns - than it was to buy. And the timber is being kept on the property. There is something quite special about that.

A good wind storm takes out the weakest trees and strengthens the rest, new roots develop after a good shaking. I've had older trees that had been in decline revive after storms, the roots began to reach out again and now they're putting on new branches on where they had been bare for decades.

Of course, some windstorms take out even the healthiest trees. I lost a half dozen 70 year old trees from an E1 tornado about two months ago. $13K to clean them up. They were beautiful, but they don’t last forever. Some planted at the same time are still fine, tho.

It’s always sad and a shock when a storm rearranges the woods so radically, but I agree with Philip: this might just make looking after the woodlands properly easier, and it’s clear it’s currently far too dense. Could you perhaps try to use some of those straight hardwood timbers for construction or flooring? Beech wood is a beautiful hardwood for furniture and construction, for example. So maybe this can turn into another silver lining. Maybe to be used for restoring the various barns.

Tar/pitch is a natural insecticide, antibacterial, and antifungal.

It is sad to lose so many trees, but it does give you the chance to reasses the wooded areas and their planting. Perhaps sooner than you would care to do it, but nature has reminded you of the need of good woodsmanship and management.

So happy the chateau survived. Keeping trees trimmed so the wind can flow through makes more sense now. It’s such a shame to have trees fall because the wind beat against a wall of branches heavily laden with leaves with no way for the wind to pass through.

Anna those trees are huge. When you were standing beside the fallen tree, it made you look so tiny....that tree is massive. I am so sorry to see this.....but thank God, no one was hurt and there was no damage to any buildings the bench or the Judas tree!! Like you said, the good news it you have lots of firewood.

What an incredible night … you are so courageous ~ on just going on… I know I’m about 3 months behind… but I won’t allow myself to jump ahead. I don’t want to miss anything along the way or get mixed up. Yup 👍 you just gotta pick up the pieces and go on. Bye 👋🏻 😘

I'm so sorry - I really feel for you. Thank God you and the chateau are all ok. There will be a silver lining, I'm sure - in time the woodland will regenerate. But it's heartbreaking to see such big trees come down. I remember walking through London after the hurricane, and seeing all the plane trees uprooted. Just awful. Bon courage dear Philipp and Anna.

So sorry to see the damage caused by the storm. Hopefully you can save large sections of the trees and after they've aged, have them milled into lumber and create something beautiful for the grounds. I had a beautiful walnut box made out of a felled walnut tree in a client's yard. I think of them every time I see it.

I'm really glad your family is alright and am relieved that there wasn't any deaths in your region. The way some of those trees fell looks like a twist pattern to them, at least on camara. 170km winds are the equivalent to a EF 1 tornado here in the states. I'm sorry about the loss of your trees. Especially the one your girls played in.

WOW! So sorry about the tree loss and the damage to the rest. You’ll have quite a clean up. The fact is the trees may have had weakness in them and nature has done its due. Let the clean up begin. The horse chestnut tree is gorgeous.
Maybe a part of that very old tree can have a part made into a bench for your property. How very sad at the loss of all the trees.
Prayers to all and so glad no one was hurt in the region and the home is standing without damage 🥰❤️✨🙏💕

The hydrangeas will come back. Plunge the broken branches into the soil and water well. They may actually develop roots and survive. If you peg their branches to the ground they root on their own. But, you need an arborist to assess damaged trees and remove those suspended branches and trees to large for you to remove yourselves.

Our storm hit at 3:40pm in Westminster, MD USA on July 19, 2022. 77 acre farm with maples, hickory, black walnut, cedar, and locust. Many trees uprooted others sheered off 10 ft above ground. What a mess! 3 days without power and roads blocked. It hurts again to watch. Hope you recover soon.
You sound so hopeful. A 2ft diameter sycamore tree fell on a spring house also. It was dead but very dangerous.

Of course there is plenty of good to come from this - no injuries or damage to the chateau or outbuildings, and that the forest has been "thinned". Still, I totally understand your shock. Harvest as much of the lumber as you can to use on future projects and stay safe!!! Love your vlogs.

If i didnt live so far away ,id lend a hand. It is a godsend that your buildings were not crushed . Out of the ruins... Like you said ,natures way of clearing the danger. Be safe around the trees while you clear. Maybe you could sell the wood ,or have it dried and use it in renovating jobs? . Make some outdoor log stools/ chairs . You got this!

The house I live in here in Northern NJ backs up to a state park. I love the trees immensely, but it is scary during storms because you never know when one could fall and hit the house. Many trees fell in the woods not long ago from a storm and it always saddens me. But I am glad your family and home is safe, along with the rest of the beautiful buildings on your property.
