- Most people immediately think of the 1692 witch trials when they think of Salem, Massachusetts. But the town has a rich history far beyond those events, from its maritime and literary roots to some of the birth of the National Guard and the first urban planning in North America.

I'm preparing to take my Salem Tour Guide License test, which requires a lot of dense historical reading. I just wanted to say thank you for this video, as it really helped me put a lot of my dates and names into context that is much easier to remember!
This video is wonderful. Love Salem, especially the maritime history ! 🚢 🌊
Thank you for posting these, my hometown. The first long distance phone call was demonstrated by A.E. Bell at the Lyceum on Church St, now a restaurant. He called Boston, and reported the local weather.
My family the Barney's came to Salem in 1664 . Left to found Swansea, Massachusetts shortly after the Witch trials for a more religious tolerant area.
Salem is a wonderful place to visit on many different occasions. Whether you go in warmer months and can do more around the water. Or, during Haunted Happenings; which I went to annually...you'll find friendly people who have found a way to balance the historical and modern parts of their town.
I also recommend touristy things, just for fun. The House of the Seven Gables has a different tour for regular days, and then the fictional one with actors on Halloween.
Buongiorno singora's. I wanted to say ? I use to live on Bridge street. In Salem back in the early 80's. I also use to walk on Essex street many times. I currently live in Albuquerque N.M. and i am a native born Bronx New Yorker and plan to one day move back to either Salem Mass or ? To my native born Bronx New York area. But my first choice is Salem and i can always hop on a train and travel down to N.Y.C. and go to the real little Italy of New York. Arthur ave. In the Bronx. Anyway grazie mille i enjoyed the video. Salem to me is a very beautiful little community in the cape Ann region. Ciao. 😎
I've been to Salem a number of times. Salem is very, very touristy. Heavy accent of the witch history. There are some very nice historical/architectural spots in the city and the Peabody museum has an excellent example of a large Chinese family home from 200 year ago. It was brought over to the US and reconstructed. You can go in it and see what life was like. Overall, the witch history is the thing, but a lot of related stuff like pirates, modern witchcraft shops, horror movie themed museums are a staple in the city. They also have a very large comic shop called Harrisons Comics. Some nice restaurants. It can be fun trip with things to do outside of the witch tourist thing. I suggest staying in a colonial B&B in the sleepy town of Marblehead, 10 minutes away. Its waterfront is entirely under the historical preservation society and is a great place for colonial historical architecture that people still live and work in.
