    Staying alive, perfect song choice. If I ever have to perform CPR I'm going to thinking about the Bee gees

    Thanks for the refresher course. I was briefly taught this back in high school when I was taught human cpr but forgot the details. Great video!

    Vet, you should mention checking and/or removing the collar as the collar may be restricting a dog or cat's breathing. Obviously you know this can happen if there is swelling (such as an allergic reaction or a bite from a venomous creature) or if some idiot human has made the collar too tight.

    Hi! Great Video! I hope i never have to apply this knowledge, but thank you for the great lesson.
    You mention another video about vital signs. I couldn't find it.
    Keep up the great work you do.
    Thank you again.

      You're welcome and thanks for watching! This video is an excerpt from my online course "Dog CPR, First Aid + Safety," so the lesson on vital signs I mentioned is from that course. If you'd like to learn more about it, here's a link with discount :) www.udemy.com/dog-cpr-first-aid-safety-for-pet-pros-dedicated-owners/?couponCode=TH-camVideo

    Can I practice doing cpr on a large stuffed dog even if the chest doesn’t rise and fall with the breaths

    • @GrandmaSezSo
      @GrandmaSezSo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any medical training props are ridiculously high priced. I don't know how they justify the cost. $3,179.00 for the dog she is using in video. I think I would improvise using a large stuffed dog to get steps down before spending that much.

    This is the video I watched, during a preliminary training vid, before actual hands on cpr(with a Jerry)training, for the pet care industry I work in.

    How do you know when to stop? After how many minutes you can declare them? 😔

    • @melaniemonteiro4261
      @melaniemonteiro4261 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The general rule is 20 minutes, or until a vet can take over. Ideally you are continuing CPR in the car (with someone else driving of course) until you reach a vet, but if that is not possible, you remain in place and perform CPR.

      He's from Rescue Critters in Van Nuys, CA. He's a pricey dude but has been performing faithfully for almost 10 years now. I believe they ship worldwide if you don't live in L.A. rescuecritters.com/product/jerry-k-9-cpr-mannikin/

    Never do a blind finger sweep, you’ll probably push whatever it is further back into the throat and if they regain consciousness they may bite your hand, it’s just like cpr on humans

    It seems doing compressions that deep would crack or break ribs. How do you keep that from happening and doing more damage?

    • @MelanieLMonteiro
      @MelanieLMonteiro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Hi Lynn, a pet's ribcage is naturally more pliable than a human's - but it's true that in order to give effective compressions, you do risk the potential for cracking ribs (just like in human CPR). However, in such a life-threatening emergency, a rescuer has no alternative but to try to save the pet's life in the manner recommended to us by the veterinary experts who created this protocol - compressing 1/3 - 1/2 the width of the chest. I have had one vet tell me that for small dogs, it's best to err on the side of 1/3 the width. But yeah, we're sort of forced to take this risk if we want any hope at all for saving the pet.

    does it matter which side you do the compressions on? Right or left? Great video, thank you!

    • @melaniemonteiro4261
      @melaniemonteiro4261 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lisa - the latest recommendations are that either side is acceptable, so you should choose the side the dog is already laying on in order to save time (by not having to move dog), allowing you to start compressions as fast as possible.

    She is going way too fast that is not 100-120 beats per minute. I am an emt and her pace would not allow the chest to recoil. Her
    If this were a real situation her chest compressions would be doing absolutely nothing. Too fast!!!
    Good video overall showed me how to do cpr on my dog.
